The creation of husband and wife team, Rebecca and Damo Leijer, the Leÿer timber furniture company produces beautiful yet functional pieces inspired by their hometown of Victoria’s Torquay. With an emphasis on smooth lines, gentle curves and light timber, the duo’s first collection is small but beautifully formed and includes seven bedroom and living room pieces.
Half-moon bedhead
A carpenter by trade, the business was born after Damo made a few pieces for his home and friends started commissioning pieces. “We realised there was a gap in the market for simply designed, locally made, and reasonably priced furniture for the home,” says Damo, who designs and hand makes the beautiful pieces to order in Victorian Ash hardwood. “I get constant inspiration from the beauty around me as well as my passions – surfing, skating and my two young daughters.”
Stall side table
The surf town Torquay figures heavily in the design process. The Beater coffee table was inspired by the gentle lines of their daughter’s first surfboard and, like all their pieces, it underwent real-life testing in their home before being added to the range. “The Stall side table is also inspired by surfing — when you need to just stall and wait for the best line to take. The design of these tables was no different as it took a few attempts but we got there in the end!”

“We still have more pieces to add to this range. We have had a lot of requests for a dining table so that will be included very soon as well as some other pieces including a TV unit and another coffee table. Our Stall tables have been an early big hit and so we will look to expand on their popularity in the next range,” says Rebecca.
Versatile boxes
The brand’s launch campaign saw them join forces with Kip & Co to help realise the beauty of their oiled timber pieces in a real life home. “I wanted to show how our furniture pieces could look in a normal home setting, not a studio or a heavily styled photoshoot. This is key to our design aesthetic and the very heart of our brand mission at Leÿer as simplicity is our thing,” says Rebecca.
