Stylist Steve Cordony’s stunning Rosedale Farm is on Airbnb!

Hundreds of thousands follow stylish Australian stylist Steve Cordony on Instagram, drooling over his picture perfect country property Rosedale Farm (I’ll admit I’m one of them and I’ve also been lucky enough to visit in person). And now, after years of hard work and renovation by Steve and partner Michael Booth, it can finally be a reality to stay there, as it lists on Airbnb. And it’ll only cost you $25 a night. Say what?!

Steve Cordony in one of Rosedale’s farm stays

Design lovers will have the chance to enjoy the ultimate Easter holiday in style, with an exclusive Airbnb stay at the idyllic estate in Orange, NSW. Steve is inviting residents of Australia to his historic Rosedale Farm property for a four-night stay from Thursday 6 April to Monday 10 April, for just $25 AUD* per night as part of a special promotion.

Dating back to 1877, Rosedale Farm is a restored estate located just seven kilometres from Orange in the central tablelands of New South Wales. A country stay to be remembered, Rosedale Farm’s main homestead features six bedrooms, three bathrooms, a formal dining room, lounge, library and kitchen. The homestead and two farm stays are positioned amongst the estate’s lavish, lushly landscaped gardens.

Every guest room has been individually designed by Steve in his signature contemporary European style, layered with an Italian farmhouse sensibility, creating a uniquely luxurious accommodation in the heart of the countryside.

As one of Australia’s leading interior and lifestyle stylists, Steve is passionate about design as a means of bringing people together to create memories with loved ones. His renovation journey of Rosedale Farm amassed a significant following, with many Aussies inspired by the impeccable attention to detail, subtle nods to the property’s heritage, and mix of both contemporary and antique furnishings.

“I created Rosedale Farm with the goal of turning this incredible historic property into a one-of-a-kind destination for guests to connect and create memories in. I love the unique and personalised experiences Airbnb hosts offer their guests, whether it be fresh flowers throughout the home or a bottle of champagne to kick off the celebrations, and Rosedale Farm is filled with special touches. I am thrilled to partner with Airbnb on hosting an unforgettable four-night stay this Easter.”

Over the past two years, many Australians found comfort in exploring their own backyards and discovering the natural beauty found across Australia. Regional bookings now make up almost 30% of nights booked on Airbnb in Australia, and when comparing the second quarter of 2022 with the pre-pandemic second quarter of 2019, regional bookings are up about 60% in Australia.

With Orange a must-visit NSW destination, this Easter season is the perfect time to explore the region and the many attractions that make it so special including the wine and produce on offer and  support local hosts while injecting much needed tourism dollars to help support small businesses and local economies.

Susan Wheeldon, Airbnb’s country manager for Australia and New Zealand, said: “We are excited to partner with Steve to create something truly special at Rosedale Farm and highlight the benefits of rural tourism.”

The unforgettable Steve Cordony four-night Easter country getaway is open for bookings on 27 February at 9am AEDT from airbnb.com.au/stevecordony and can be booked on a first come first serve basis. Set a reminder now!

The two Rosedale farm stays will be available to book ongoing from airbnb.com.au/stevecordony from 27 February, 2023. We anticipate it will cost a lot more than $25 a night!

*Exclusive of fees including booking and service fees.

Mind boggling Airbnb ideas to become reality in Australia

From tens of thousands of entries from around the world, 100 aspiring designers, architects, and DIYers from 23 countries have been chosen to bring their crazy ideas to life and share in the US$10million OMG! Fund from Airbnb. And four of them are in Australia!

Sitemap for bubble on top of a mountain

The winning ideas stood out for their unique and inspiring design, sustainable consideration, and novel ways of offering immersive guest experiences. Recipients will each receive up to US$100,000 to make their fantastical creations possible.

Four Australians have won a share in the ‘OMG Fund’ and over the course of the next 10 months, will design, construct and outfit their dreams to be guest-ready by next summer. And here they are…

Eco-Igloo by Catherine W

The Eco-Igloo dome home will be built using 6,000 handmade aircrete bricks. Made up of four large domes which blend seamlessly into nature, the property is perfect for Aussie climates and it is a game changer to help more people achieve beautiful and affordable builds.

Luxury bubble on top of a mountain by Timothy H

Inspired by a sky full of stars and the power of reconnecting with nature, a stay in this luxury bubble will make you feel like you are floating on top of the world. Located a stone’s throw from the world-famous Wilsons Promontory National Park in Gippsland, Victoria, the bubble is also eco-friendly and sustainable, with the deck made out of recycled timber, and equipped with energy-saving appliances, low-flush toilets and low-flow showers using tank water.

Model of luxury bubble on top of a mountain

“My inspiration came after sleeping under the stars in a small tent when I was in France last year,” said Timothy. “The idea was to create an out of the ordinary, yet unique and accessible experience for guests. The result is a transparent bubble high up on a mountain top with 360-degree views of the night sky, fields and oceans below.”

Kangaroom floating pod by Matt D

“We want to provide guests with a unique Aussie experience, to deliver a genuine connection to the landscape, and at the same time, inspire sustainable living and make eco-tourism mainstream,” said Matt from Melbourne on his Kangaroom floating pod idea.

Model of Kangaroom

Utilising almost 80% glass to seamlessly connect guests with their natural surroundings, Kangaroom will be designed using modular pods to create a floating Airbnb stay situated on a kangaroo playground in Daylesford, Victoria. The property hosts an abundance of wildlife and will act as a ‘reverse zoo’ where guests reside in a comfortable and luxurious space, while being close to nature. The multi-level structure will levitate over panoramic views of the kangaroo habitat, leaving guests transformed with a new appreciation for the environment and empowered to make changes in their own lives for a sustainable future.

Parisian grit meets glamour in new Sydney hotel with rooftop bar

Bursting with character, Darlinghurst’s The Strand Hotel has completed the final phase of its multi-level restoration. The 99-year-old pub with the new rooftop bar and 17-bedroom hotel is now open. Creating a boutique refuge in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, The Strand offers sophistication with a mix of well curated French style.

The project was overseen by George Gorrow, co-founder of cult denim brand Ksubi, with principal architect Tom de Plater of Public Hospitality and Public Design Studio as creative director.

A contemporary blend of Parisian elegance and bohemian spirit, The Strand Rooftop is an idyllic open escape for both hotel guests and locals alike to soak up the afternoon sun underneath the kaleidoscope awning or watch the city at dusk, lit up with the glow of festoon lights. The rooftop offers a playful and vibrant mix of colourful textures, warm timber and lush verdant landscaping that encloses the intimate space.

“We’ve designed the rooftop to provide an unexpected and charming escape amongst the anonymity of William Street, with a deliberate strong contrast to the aesthetic experienced through the brooding texture and materials of the hotel rooms and bistro below” says Tom.

The bar serves its signature drinks, the French Ginger Mule and Thyme & Basil Daiquiri, alongside a menu of light dishes such as tuna tartare and fried shallot with sesame crackers, corn and gruyere croquettes, fried chicken with pickles and hot sauce and the Rooftop toastie with leg ham, mustard and pickles.

The rooftop will also host a series of live entertainment and weekly DJs each Friday and Saturday from 6pm to midnight and 4pm to 10pm on Sundays.

Describing The Strand Hotel as a drink, George wants the hotel to feel like a dirty martini; classic, with a twist. “The Strand has been designed with the intimacy and personal service of a boutique hotel, creating a community hub of likeminded people, that makes you want to return again and again. My purpose is for the character of the hotel to grow and continue to build over time, just as if you were building your own home.”

The Strand’s 17 boutique hotel rooms with refined, contemporary interiors feature crisp white linens, rattan bedheads, deep green finishings and contrasting dark floorboards. With five different guest rooms to choose from, starting at $199 a night for a king single through to $359 for a deluxe queen, each calm oasis is filled with considered essentials that will keep guests both pampered and plugged-in.

As guests enter from the bustling William Street, they will be welcomed through to a charismatic hotel house of Parisan sensibility where grit meets glamour and dark black surfaces paint a masculine edge to contrast the refined furnishings and warm cream textures of the walls, showcasing the history and character of the building.

The bistro

The architectural design has been born off the history of the site with a winding staircase taking guests up to a two-story labyrinth of winding halls, where George has hand selected Australian photographers such as Simon Lekius, Denniela Rache, Chris Searl and Domonic Rawl to adorn the walls.

Meanwhile on the ground floor, The Strand Bistro is bolstered by a playful sense of mischief, drawing cues from turn-of-the-century Paris, with a modern laidback interpretation of French cuisine. Spoons of beluga caviar sit proudly alongside humble steak frites and duck leg pie served with grilled broccolini, mash and gravy and baguettes with cultured butter. Culinary director Nick Mahlook has designed the Bistro menu to hero seasonal Australian produce while the extensive drinks list boasts an impressive line-up of French and Australian wines, aperitifs, cocktails and beers and a 49 strong whisky list.

The Strand Bistro, Hotel and Rooftop are now all open for bookings.

Australia’s best designed Airbnb was once a US barn

The annual Airbnb Host Awards have just been announced, shining a light on Australia’s top holiday home hosts. Several fabulous properties have been spotlighted but there are two that really piqued our interest – the ‘Best Designed Stay’ and ‘Best Unique Stay’ are giving us serious wanderlust.

“I was blown away by the finalists included in this year’s Airbnb’s Host Awards and the task of choosing a winner was incredibly difficult. It is clear these hosts put a lot of love and effort into their listings, and it certainly pays off,” says Airbnb Superhost Merrydith Callegari who sits on Airbnb’s global host advisory board.

Coombs Hill Barn, Australia’s ‘Best Designed Stay’ for 2022

The ‘Best Designed Stay’ was awarded to Coombs Hill Barn which is in the Victorian town of Merrijig. A 160-year-old barn from America, the home’s owners got the idea while travelling in the US where they found an old barn, had it dismantled and shipped to Australia where it was re-erected and restored on their family property in Victoria’s High Country. The process took three years and the gorgeous home takes cosy to another level with its beautiful rustic vibes and colour palette inspired by the surrounding landscape.

“Coombs Hill Barn is the most stunning barn conversion I have ever seen! Katherine and Wade designed the interior themselves and were influenced by the colours of the old timber beams of the barn itself. They describe the aesthetic as a perfect combination of traditional, rustic and industrial but I just call it perfect,” says Merrydith.

The ‘Best Designed Stay’ award was taken out by The Winged House in Tasmania’s Table Cape region. Designed by renowned Australian artist and architect Richard Goodwin, from the outside, the unique abode stretches over a cliff and looks like a bird or plane about to take off. But the real spoils are found inside where guests can enjoy a 180-degree perspective of the ocean, eagles above and the occasional seal.

“I think the location of this listing and its design as well as the attention to detail of the hosts makes this a very worthy winner. Guests have said that the photos don’t do it justice, and the experience of staying in this unique home is worth any sacrifice you have to make to experience this place. I have it on my bucket list now!” says Merrydith.

This year’s winning hosts were selected based on extensive Airbnb data, guest scores and reviews and with oversight from a panel of experienced judges.

New cruise ship interior inspired by Sydney pub scene

With international travel looking incredibly chaotic at present, and the cruise ship industry up and rolling again, sailing the high seas is looking like an attractive holiday option. And for interior lovers, P&O Cruises’ Pacific Encounter has put its COVID-induced downtime to good use in the form of renovations. Patterned carpet aside, there’s lots to enjoy about the redesign!

Encounter Hotel
Encounter Hotel

Arguably the ship’s number one attraction, the Encounter Hotel’s renovation drew inspiration from the Sydney pub scene – locally sourced art, banquette seating and a fresh colour scheme provide the perfect backdrop for banter and a tipple, oceanside.

Created in partnership with Archie Rose Distilling Co, the transformation of the ship’s Bonded Store cocktail bar is another highlight. Cosy furniture, vintage accessories, gingham and velvet make for quite the appealing late-night spot.

The Blue Room is yet another on-board bar option – reminiscent of a New Orleans speakeasy, the room has been overhauled with luxe brass furnishings paired with dramatic, moody lighting. The Blue Room has a reputation for showcasing some of Australia’s best live musicians with a particular focus on blues, RnB, funk, soul and jazz.

Fondly referred to as the ship’s living room,The Ocean Bar boasts a neutral palette of green and white as well as plenty of lounge chairs and sofas to recline on. And sitting atop the entire ship, the nautical inspired Altitude has fabulous ocean views by day before it turns into a high-energy club by night.

Hip new motel renovation on NSW South Coast

There’s something deliciously retro about staying at a motel but, let’s face it, most of them could do with an upgrade. And that’s just what a group of young Canberra professionals thought when they came across a run-down motel in Bateman’s Bay, on the NSW South Coast and decided to overhaul it.

Motel room

With Those Architects at the helm, the property has been transformed into The Isla – a stylishly sentimental, luxuriously designed motel that pays homage to the quintessential Australian beach holiday.

“We instantly fell in love with this property and saw the potential to create something truly special; it was an honour to be able to give it a new lease of life,” says The Isla co-founder Yanna Dascarolis of the property that has been given a sensitive restoration that plays fabulously on its retro roots. The motel is a stone’s throw from the beach and is a four-hour drive by car from Sydney making it an attractive local vacay option for many of our readers.

Each room is stocked with Leif organic bath products

With 18 rooms, the motel has been restored with modern design and amenities and each room features gorgeous bespoke oak furnishings, terrazzo, brushed brass accents and A.H Beard beds. In addition, each room is fitted with a contactless check-in feature that is accessed via mobile phone.

The motel’s old garage has been converted into a retro-styled pool lounge that flows into a communal dining area and surrounds a new pool. In addition, the motel has three suites; ‘Poco’ which sits above the pool and pool lounge, ‘Vista’ which has fabulous views of the ocean and ‘Grande’ which has its own private plunge pool and is the largest suite on offer.

Pool
Pool

And instead of a minibar, guests can visit the motel’s Cantina, a new concept where bespoke vending machines offer carefully curated and locally sourced artisan products, such as Dangerous Ales beer, cocktails from Poor Toms Gin and ST ALi espresso martinis.

Cantina

Those Architects took design cues from the unspoilt landscape and relaxed energy of the NSW South Coast, with 1970’s inspired sunset hues and natural textures featuring throughout the property. Australian designers are also featured, with furniture from Design by Them, lighting from Coco Flip Design Studio and artworks from Vynka Hallam and Tegan Franks.

“The challenges of the last few years have given us a new-found appreciation for what we have here – our beautiful Australian backyard. There is something so wonderfully nostalgic about the Australian motel; it feels like a home away from home.”

Live Like Bluey for the weekend: iconic Heeler home recreated by Airbnb

The iconic Heeler family home from hit Australian kids’ show, Bluey, has been recreated ‘for real life’ and is being listed on Airbnb in Brisbane. One lucky family will win the opportunity to live like the Heelers for the ultimate Bluey fan weekend.

Bluey is now a global phenomenon that follows the adventures of Bluey – a six-year-old Blue Heeler dog – who lives with her Mum (Chilli), Dad (Bandit) and little sister Bingo. The show screens in over 60 countries and is loved by both parents and kids for its heart, humour and relatable family moments.

Airbnb has partnered with BBC Studios, co-commissioner and global distributor of Bluey, on this one-of-a-kind experience.

Nestled on a quiet, tree-lined street in Brisbane – the city which has inspired the show’s colourful backdrop – the house has been entirely customised to bring the cartoon experience to life, featuring quirky details Bluey fans will recognise from the Heeler family home in the show.

From the moment guests step onto the front lawn, they’ll be transported to Bluey’s imaginative world as they spot familiar touches like the red letterbox, bone-shaped chimney, and charming bay window.

Inside, the interior has been re-imagined with a breezy Mid-Century aesthetic coupled with playful pops of colour. The girls’ playroom with its signature rainbow canopy, kiwi rug and numerous toys – including Bluey’s beloved Chattermax toy and magic xylophone – is the ultimate setting for creative play and make believe.

Kids can stay overnight in Bluey and Bingo’s bedroom, equipped with two single beds fitted with a custom stained-glass window feature, colourful hanging lanterns, cloud cushions and, of course, a hand-crafted watermelon rug.

Once the kids are snuggled down with Bingo’s Floppy and Grey Dancer toys, parents can retreat to Bandit and Chilli’s airy and plant-filled master bedroom – complete with queen-sized bed, rattan furnishings and neutral hues.

The backyard is a verdant oasis for family games – like Horsey Ride and Keepy Uppy – with a BBQ, trampoline, Grannies’ car, custom toadstool seats and bespoke dog garden gnomes. Yummy snacks can be found in the fully stocked fridge, including Bandit’s famous duck cake.

The weekend getaway includes:

  • An exclusive behind the scenes tour of the Ludo Studio, where Bluey is created
  • A Chinese takeaway feast in the lush backyard (don’t forget the spring rolls!)
  • An afternoon decorating the Heelers’ famous duck cake, where the whole family can test their culinary skills
  • A puppet-making craft session featuring Bluey’s famous Bob Bilby character.

This two-night stay*, sleeping two adults and two children, will take place from Friday 18 February to Sunday 20 February 2022 for only $20** (or $10 dollarbucks a night!). All guests must be residents of Australia. Bookings are available on a first come first serve basis. Bluey fans can request to book this stay on Tuesday 15 February at 8am AEDT at airbnb.com/bluey. To request to book, guests must have a verified Airbnb profile, a history of positive reviews and be aged 18+. Airbnb is committed to helping to ensure each stay is a positive experience for guests, hosts and local neighbourhood communities.

For those who miss out on the stay or are located outside Australia, an Online Experience hosted by one of the Bluey composers Jazz D’Arcy, part of the team behind the music in the series, along with Brisbane-based children’s choreographer, Cherie Lange, will be available for kids and their parents; 10 spots will be available to book in each of three distinct time zones (Australian, US and UK).

Hosted live from Bluey’s house, the whole family can participate in this fully interactive online workshop where guests will be dancing, singing and laughing as Jazz and Cherie recreate some of the most beloved songs and dance moves from the show. Bookings for the Online Experience sessions open on Tuesday 15 February 15 at 8am AEDT at airbnb.com/blueyexperience. Farming family diversifies with luxury dome accommodation

Located in the New South Wales region of Warialda (400 km south-west of Brisbane), Faraway Domes is one of the more unique travel destinations we’ve come across. Created to diversify one family’s farming operation during the drought, the luxury domes are located on a 9000-acre mixed farming operation, and they’ve proved incredibly popular over the last year. In fact, with capacity rates an all-time high, the owners Jaime and Belinda Munsie have just added a new five-star dome to the offering.

Faraway Domes

“It’s been so rewarding to see how many people want to travel to outback Australia and experience what we have to offer, while enjoying first class comfort,” says Belinda, who has entertained people from all over Australia as well as from Canada, the UK, China, USA and Switzerland since launching the business.

The deluxe eco-retreat was created with comfort and luxury in mind, with each dome featuring air conditioning, an ensuite, a fully functional kitchen and an elevated private deck. Guests can also book in an in-dome massage or beauty treatment during their stay too.

A fabulous new addition to the property, the new luxury geodesic dome features a fire pit, king size bed, private plunge pool and an outdoor bath that overlooks spectacular outback views. The additional dome is perfect for couples visiting with friends, with the option of renting out both domes at the same time.

“With occupancy rates currently at 86%, things are slowly getting back to normal after lockdowns, so we’re hoping more travellers can get out to experience why regional and rural Australia is so unique,” says Belinda.

With occupancy rates an all-time high, it seems that many Aussies want to explore rural Australia in style

“There really is nothing else like it. Our wildlife, birdlife, views, walking trails and the astonishing landscape draws guests back on repeat visits. What sort of house does $1 million Australian dollars buy you overseas?

It’s often been said that Australia has some of the highest property prices in the world and the global pandemic doesn’t seemed to have affected that. In fact, most Australian cities have seen price increases over the last 18 months with many Aussies returning from overseas to our relatively safe shores. And given the current market, Ray White chief economist Nerida Consibee began to wonder whether you could find better value buying a house in one of your favourite holiday destinations.

Purchasing issues aside (some countries won’t allow foreign ownership at all, but many will), Australian banks typically aren’t keen on providing finance to offshore purchases of residential property. But assuming you’ve got cash (ha!), just what sort of house does $1 million Australian dollars buy you overseas?

“It’s hard to compare pricing at a global level, particularly given within a capital city or country, there can be significant variance in properties available. On a square metre basis, Turkey is the cheapest country to buy in, while Switzerland and Luxembourg are the most expensive. But in the United Kingdom, cities like London would have precincts that are potentially far more expensive than Switzerland,” says Nerida.

Given the difficulty in comparing prices, Nerida decided to look at some well-known global spots to see what you could purchase, compared to what you would get for the same money in a comparable spot in Australia.

A one-bedroom apartment in a global city
The Australian dollar is currently rather weak – $AU1 million will only get you around $US715,000, £525,000 or €610,000. And while that exchange rate isn’t fabulous it is still enough to get you a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment in New York, London or Paris.

$AU1 million could buy you this New York apartment

Interestingly, this is similar to the median price for Australia’s most global city, Sydney, where $960,00 is the median value of an apartment. By contrast, a similar apartment in the Melbourne CBD is worth $460,000.

You could purchase this Sydney apartment for $AU1 million
You could purchase this Sydney apartment for around $AU1 million

A family home in one of the world’s most liveable cities
Every year The Economist releases a report on the world’s most liveable cities and Austin, Texas ranked highly this year. For $AU1 million, you can purchase a pretty nice house on a big block like the one pictured below. You can also buy a three-bedroom house in West End, one of Edinburgh’s best suburbs.

You could purchase this Austin, Texas home for around $AU1 million

In Australia, the same sort of money would buy you a house in a nice, beachside suburb in Adelaide – the Aussie spot that was recently ranked our most liveable city. You could also get a house in Footscray in Melbourne’s up and coming inner west.

This Adelaide home is in walking distance from the beach – it’s in Henley Beach which has just hit the $1 million dollar median price point

A beachside getaway
A beachside holiday home in Asia sounds rather lovely right now but you do need to look quite carefully at where you can buy – many Asian countries have strict conditions on foreign ownership. For example, Thailand will allow foreigners to own an apartment, but they are forbidden from owning freehold land. That said, AU$1 million would get you a luxury hillside villa in Thailand’s Phuket or something similar in Bali’s Canggu.

This Bali villa is currently listed for just over $AU1.1 million

The same money would get you into a beachside suburb in Australia, but you are unlikely to get a new luxury villa. For example, Pelican Waters on the Sunshine Coast recently hit that price point but you’re looking at something more akin to a beach shack.

A country mansion
Rural Europe represents very good value for money if you have a penchant for historic buildings. For $600,000 you could purchase a historic stone manor in the Auvergne region of France – complete with its own tower!

Incredibly, you could purchase this rural French home for $600,000 Australian dollars

By contrast, the same money will get you into the inland parts of northern New South Wales where Mullumbimby currently has a median price of $988,000. Close to Melbourne, Macedon recently just hit the $1 million median mark too.

This house is located in Mullumbimby which has just hit the the million dollar median mark

Armchair travel: Amy’s New York furniture & homewares picks

As old blue eyes said, New York really is the city that never sleeps. From the galleries and museums to the architecture, shopping and incredible food, it’s hard to get much rest in the city – especially as a tourist with limited time on ground. And while a Big Apple trip is off the cards for the foreseeable, here’s my selection of homewares that might just transport you there – even for just a New York minute.

MOMA Mondri vase: In a city brimming with incredible museums and galleries it’s tough to pick a favourite but MOMA will always have my heart. With all the New York art greats housed under one roof (think Pollock, Warhol, Basquiat and Haring), it is a must-see destination. The gallery houses a couple of Piet Mondrian pieces also and this fabulous vase takes me right back. $153.

Jonathan Adler: The New Jersey born designer got his big break in New York when his first pottery line was picked up by Barneys. The opening of his very first standalone store in Soho ensued and the rest is history. And while his brand now encompasses furniture, textiles and everything in between, it’s his ceramics that I still find most covetable.

West Elm staggered glass 3-Light adjustable floor lamp: A New York loft wouldn’t be complete without a statement floor lamp and this beauty is on my want list. $499.

West elm standard lamp

Anthropologie: A New York trip wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the eclectic homewares and fashion emporium Anthropologie. Thankfully Aussies are able to get our Anthro-fix online and these are my top two picks. The cotton throw is by Marcello Velho (the whole range is rather gorgeous) and the decorative chain link comes in on-trend terracotta too.

Chrysler Building art prints: When it comes to New York skyscrapers the Empire State Building gets a lot of attention but the Chrysler Building is my hands-down fave. It’s Art Deco styling is a sight to behold at close range (the sun-burst like detail and gargoyles in particular) and these prints do a good job of capturing the building’s magic.

Temple & Webster Odessa shelving unit: Another enduring classic that arose from the New York loft aesthetic, this industrial style shelving unit is the perfect spot to showcase your favourite books and trinkets. $469.

Armchair travel: an interior designer’s Amalfi Coast homewares picks

By Rory James Carter

Ever since I touched down in Italy’s world-renowned Amalfi Coast a couple of years ago, I knew it would be a destination I’d never forget. From the narrow, winding roads that seem to balance effortlessly atop plunging coastal cliffs, to the pastel-painted piazzas and rejuvenating aquamarine seas, this region of the world should feature on every person’s bucket list.

At every turn along the picturesque Amalfi coastline there’s endless design inspiration to be found. Tall boutique hotels and villas in shades from soft peach to deep terracotta hang freely from mountains, featuring repeating archways and terraces brimming with vibrant bougainvillea.

Striped umbrellas in electrifying cobalt blue and orange hues line the rocky shores and provide the perfect backdrop for an afternoon spritz in a place where the sun never seems to set. Since any return trips to Italy are off the cards for the time being, I’ve rounded up my favourite homewares that will transport you straight to the Amalfi Coast.

CLO Studios Vogue Urn: With a textured white paint finish and a very Roman form, this sculptural urn comes in three different sizes — perfect for displaying on a buffet or even on the floor to breathe life into an unused corner. From $85.

Freedom Soloman Table Lamp: This ceramic lamp is ideal as a bedside companion or as the finishing touch to a console table. With a textured matt white finish, it evokes memories of the plastered whitewash walls throughout the coast that contrast beautifully against the vibrant sunbeds and overgrown fauna. $249.

Maison Balzac 4 Goblets: When I think of the Amalfi Coast, I instantly conjure up images of coloured glassware. Each time I’d order myself a Hugo Spritz in bars along the coastline I noticed how it was served in a different glass, in varying sizes and colours. I believe that the simple act of sipping your favourite drink can become a special occasion, and this mixed sunset-toned set of tumblers will make it feel like summer all year round. From $79.

Lucy Montgomery Round Cushion: For a playful Amalfi-inspired addition to your bed or sofa, this bespoke striped cushion is right on the money. Featuring painterly vertical stripes in ochre tones, it’ll be easy to imagine you’re lounging at Spiaggi Grande in Positano in no time. $340.

Baina Roman Organic Pool Towel: Whether you use it as a daily bath towel or for when you’re drying off by the pool, the ecru and red checkerboard pattern (reminiscent of the iconic Le Sirenuse Hotel) will no doubt make any task feel like you’re on sunny Italian vacation. $110.

Assouline Capri Dolce Vita: I remember the day I spent at Capri’s La Canzone del Mare in 2019 like it was yesterday. From swimming in the crystal clear private beach water to basking in the glorious Mediterranean sun for hours, time seems to disappear when you’re on the island that’s famous for its carefree atmosphere and stylish guests. This vibrant coffee table book explores the paradise of Capri and all of its iconic history. $152.

Corey Ashford Glass Carafe Set: Nothing’s ever too rushed in Southern Italy’s most famous towns, and perfection is never the goal. From rustic cuisines to handmade ceramics, everything is done with spirit by the locals. This organic, wavy carafe set embodies the Mediterranean way of life, embracing natural forms and offering a chance to make a simple task a special moment in your day. $125.

Hugo Taemets One Fire Sun Print: Shot in laid-back Praiano, this vibrant print captures the eternal colour contrast of blue and orange found throughout the sparkling region. If you can’t be lounging under an umbrella on the Amalfi Coast, the next best thing is to have this hung on your wall so you can daydream. From $120.

Dinosaur Designs Medium Resin Rock Bowl: Made in Australia and with no two items identical, this vibrant resin bowl is perfect for displaying fruit and salads in the summertime, and the golden hues that run throughout the piece are reminiscent of the zesty lemon trees that grow freely along coast. $180.

Waukivory Estate room reveal: the kitchen!

You know we love a good before and after, and our weekly room reveals of Naomi Findlay’s Waukivory Estate holiday cottage project are giving us a regular dose of interiors inspo! What’s more, it’s all being achieved on a budget, so read on if you want tips for creating a kitchen that looks more expensive than it is!

This week, we have the kitchen (you can catch up on the bedrooms and bathrooms) and it definitely does not disappoint! It’s been opened up to an open plan living and dining area but we can’t show you that until next week! It was also turned into a galley style which helped with the budget among other things.

Without further ado, here’s a snapshot:

BEFORE: the 2013 magazine on the counter suggested that was the last time anyone cooked here.
AFTER

Naomi explains it was all done on a minimal budget. She had to make sure it was functional and also had the look and feel she was after to flow with the rest of the cottage, for as little spend as possible,

The open shelving is both practical and a great styling opportunity.

“I actually moved the location of the kitchen which was in a rear corner of the home to the middle of the house to make use of a large wall which is exactly what kitchens need. They need a wall for storage shelving and a wall for functionality. The original kitchen had no full height walls as it had old-fashioned small windows in front of everything.”

It was designed specifically as a holiday home kitchen rather than an everyday home kitchen. “You don’t need a large larder and there’s less need for long-term large storage in regard to food and other things. However on the flipside, the entertaining needs are just as much as a normal kitchen or a little bit more.”

The combination of a flatpack kitchen with an engineered stone bench and splash back, statement pendant lights and the finishing touches of the timber trims work together to give a really custom look.

“If you want to do similar with a flatpack kitchen, think about how you can add extra details like big skirts or how you can trim your shelf tops. Then get the look and feel that you want with your handles. Really luxe out on your handles! Naturally in this case the stone is a hero so putting amazing benchtops on your flatpack can completely change it. Then accessorise. Make sure that you don’t leave it as a plain kitchen. Use layers like you would in any other room.”

Her favourite things are the stone and the lighting. “I think they just bring a beautiful unique country charm to the space. I’ve also love the eclectic mix of plateware, utensils and chopping boards that I’ve collected from op shops all around the country.”

As always, there’s a lot more information in the video from Naomi and her business partner in the build, Josh Ferris of Ferris Building.

Two beautiful bathrooms on a serious budget: Waukivory Estate reveals

Last week, we introduced you to serial renovator Naomi Findlay’s new passion project, a NSW farm stay holiday accommodation called Waukivory Estate. It’s fair to say she’s poured a lot of heart and soul into the property!

Today, we’re revealing the two stylish bathrooms which were completed on a real shoestring budget!

AFTER: How good does the vinyl plank flooring look?

Are you ready for the before?!

BEFORE: It’s a bit of a horror show!

That was a bit scary, right?!

There was actually only one bathroom originally and Naomi knew she needed to squeeze in another if big families or groups were going to stay here comfortably. In true Naomi style, she got to work carving up her floorpan and made it look easy! Top tip: make sure everything you want to fit in will fit before you start pulling down and putting up walls!

Of course handy Naomi made this stool herself from a chopped down tree!
A clawfoot bath with a shower above absolutely fits with the age of the property while saving money too. And the 300mm high Intrim skirting makes a statement.

I’m so in love with the white and brass palette of the bathrooms with touches of timber to warm it up. Gorgeous!

And of course they’re styled to perfection!

Watch the latest video for all the details of what they did, why and how. Enjoy!

Dream farm renovation project creates unique holiday cottage

Creating her own unique farm stay has been a dream of reno queen Naomi Findlay’s for as long as she can remember and she’s finally done it! You won’t believe what she started with to create what is now a comfortable, stylish and peaceful country escape at Waukivory Estate! And we’re excited to exclusively bring you the first episode of a video series following the progress.

One of the transformed bedrooms

Naomi has done countless renos, but this one is special. It’s more than buildings; it’s about creating an experience for many other people to enjoy too. “This is my dream project because it’s creating a destination. As we move through the project, it’s about creating experiences. I want people to create memories when they come to stay, whether that be singing happy birthday on the deck overlooking the mountains, watching their dog playing in the creek or being able to bring their horses on a holiday with them. Or it might be getting to visit some of the amazing things I plan to build there or meet our beautiful donkeys.”

Waukivory Estate is in the midst of dairy and cattle country and 20 minutes from the heart of Gloucester, being the closest town to Barrington. Just three hours north of Sydney, at the same time if you head east, it is just over an hour to the popular Seal Rocks and Blueys Beach.

Ever since she was a little girl, Naomi dreamed of owning a B&B and baking scones for visitors! Then, 2.5 years ago, she decided to try and make it a reality. But the rundown farm buildings were certainly not picture perfect. “I’m a sucker for something that’s broken and for re-energising and reimagining things; anything that involves injecting positivity, personality and kindness into a space.”

BEFORE Bedroom 3

The previous owners had fled over a decade before as they were ageing and had discovered extensive termites. “Afterwards, the husband passed away and the wife was unable to sell it because it reminded her so much of their time together. To be shown this property and then to be entrusted with this property and the dreams and memories that it held for the previous owner was kind of an honour. All around the property you see evidence of the type of man husband was. You know he loved to tinker with cars and he was a farmer who loved fixing things.”

BEFORE Bedroom 2

Most people would have been overwhelmed by the scale of the restoration required, but not Naomi! “It was actually the structures and their state of disrepair and all the relics of the life people had had in them that was left there that inspired me! I imagined the bell on the back door being rung for lunch and the kids climbing the trees. Even though getting out all the old leftover belongings was a huge task, it truly helped me see that this was once a place of life and laughter.”

The surrounding landscape was a clincher too; the hills, the view of the valley, the rambling creek. “I remember the first time I saw the property (as she took some hard work to buy), standing in the long grass breathing in the silence thinking if I love her enough and give her all the energy I have, I know it will be amazing.”

The master bedroom at Waukivory Estate

She couldn’t do it alone though, teaming up with construction partner Josh Ferris of Ferris Building. “He loves to build and, deep down below his pro surfer façade, he is a full tilt farm boy! Our skill sets are directly opposite to one another so we are a perfect partnership but we both overlap in that we are very determined (that is the kind way of saying crazy stubborn when it comes to getting the outcome we want!), hands on and believe 100 percent in the vision.”

Finishing the project as lockdowns continue around the country has of course been disappointing, but Naomi is confident that once people can, they’ll be desperate to enjoy a domestic escape like this, especially as international borders will no doubt be closed for a while longer.

“Families, singles, groups of friends, dog owners and horse lovers (once the stables are done) will love this place,” she says. “From Christmas, we will be able to sleep 16, so it’s also ideal for retreats and events.”

More than anything, Naomi wants guests to feel like they are going back to a more simple time, with simple country comforts; a place that feels like home to them and hugs them when they walk in.”

We hope you enjoy the video below, which tells the full story of the first part of the transformation. And stay turned for next week’s reveals: two bathrooms completed on a serious budget!

CHAT TO NAOMI & JEN! We’re going live on Instagram for a chat at 7.30pm next Tuesday 24 August! Join us to ask Naomi any questions about Waukivory, renovating rundown buildings, renovating for holiday accommodation, bathrooms on a budget or anything else you fancy! Or send your questions in advance to [email protected]

A new luxury coastal getaway for design lovers just three hours from Sydney

Just three hours north of Sydney with direct access to Boomerang Beach, 88SOUTH is a new idyllic coastal retreat where modern minimalism meets luxury and comfort. A paradise for design enthusiasts, surfers, and those wishing to reconnect with nature, it’s a dream house for a group getaway accommodating up to 10 guests.

Owned by Kersti and Stuart Faulkner of the Peppertree Hill Accommodation Group, as long-time holidaymakers to the area, they’ve designed the house to fully epitomise “the carefree Australian summer” experience.

“Over the years my husband, Stuart and I have had the pleasure of bringing our own children to holiday in this tranquil part of the world,” said Kersti. “We treasure our holiday memories spent surfing, laying on the beach, enjoying local oysters or catching a sunrise.”

The beachfront property with five large bedrooms, boasts panoramic views of the Pacific Palms coastline thanks to careful planning by Collins and Turner architectural firm. Although it may seem ideal for the summer months, there’s also a firepit to snuggle around when it’s colder!

This architectural beauty with its multiple living spaces uses a striking blend of Carrara marble, American oak, formed and polished concrete. The minimal furnishings and oversized glass windows showcase the incredible ocean views while still providing spacious privacy. Outside, there’s a 13-metre lap pool, private garden and decks overlooking the ocean.

Booti Booti and Myall Lake National Parks are just a short drive away and the remoteness of the location will give you a chance to breathe away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

“While Boomerang Beach is a sentimental place, it’s also healing,” said  Kersti. “It doesn’t matter how long or short the stay, we always come back to reality feeling re-energised, re-inspired and reset. We love that we now get to share our own special space with others.”
