100 year old ship timber reborn as eco-friendly, mosaic tiles

Bella Lujo has announced the release of Renaza, a range of mosaic timber tiles crafted from 100 year-old hardwood, sustainably sourced from decommissioned boats. I can’t tell you how much I love this concept!

The Renaza (Spanish for ‘reborn’) timber tile range offers an affordable and ecologically sound way to bring the warmth and spirit of timber to any interior. Seasoned by the elements after a lifetime at sea, the timber used in each tile is up to a century old, possessing an incredible resilience and rich character. This, combined with the finite quantity of reclaimed hardwood available, adds to the range’s exclusivity.

Lovingly crafted into mosaic form, the tiles can be used internally — on walls and ceilings — and for some external applications.

They come in 2 sizes — 300mm x 300 mm and 600mm x 300mm – and 2 distinct finishes, suited to a diverse range of interior styles. Rustico is a naturally finished, minimally tooled range, which allows the honest, natural spirit of the timber to shine through. It’s perfect for relaxed interiors, where an organic aesthetic is favoured. Silva is a polished, refined treatment of the same hardwood, oozing understated elegance and perfect for high end projects where sleek lines and premium finishes reign supreme.

Renaza’s Matthew Gooding, says the response to the recycled timber tiles has been overwhelming: “Our first shipment sold out within 2 weeks, simply from word of mouth and having visited a few architectural practices. Everyone from interior designers, to architects and home renovators love them because they’re a sustainable, very high quality product and there’s nothing else like them in Australia. Feedback has been that their eco-friendliness is a key selling point too, as people want to enjoy the beauty of timber, but not at the cost of the environment.”

The tiles can be installed onto any solid surface (e.g. gyprock, fibrous cement sheeting, brick, render) using a flexible construction adhesive. Applications are versatile and include ceilings and walls in bedrooms, lounge rooms, entrance ways, kitchens, living rooms, commercial offices, boardrooms, cafes, restaurants, hotels, showrooms, bars and lobbies.

Starting from $249 per square metre and available from selected retailers nationwide. More information.

I just love the vintage feel of these tiles. Its so hard to get wood that had that ‘old’ feel for when you’re doing interiors that have more of a bo-ho look. Most of all it’s great to see products coming out that are GREEN! Beauty that’s not at the expense of the environment. Love it.
