Akira Isogawa for Designer Rugs

Designer Rugs has collaborated with celebrated Australian fashion designer Akira Isogowa for the third time on a stunning new collection and I’m excited to attend the launch tonight.

In this collaboration, HIRAMEKI (meaning inspiration), Akira’s striking rugs reference his current catwalk collections. They showcase his love of exploring the juxtaposition between his traditional Japanese heritage and Australia’s love of colour.

Akira Isogawa for Designer Rugs started as a limited edition collection in 2005, but public demand insisted on a second. More ornate and internationally inspired than his previous collections, Akira’s vision for Hirameki’s designs largely came from fabrics found during his travels. Bamboo has been introduced as a renewable material in the Ayame and Shibori designs, complementing the New Zealand wool.

Ayame and Kiku were the culmination of integrating silk block kimono fabric designs with traditional Japanese floral motifs of iris and chrysanthemums.

Shibori, meaning twist, is a unique tie-dye textile, originating from Japan, featuring a floral and wave motif.

Batik is exquisite yet playful, based on Bali’s traditional water resistance dying technique, whereby wax is used to hand paint on the cloth before it is dyed.

The craftsmanship of the latest Akira collection is unmistakable, with every rug meticulously handmade to the standard size of 200×300 cm with two rugs in a standard size of 250cm diameter. Additionally they can be custom coloured and sized to suit any interior space, whether commercial or residential.

The Akira rug collection can be found in residences globally and luxury commercial spaces including The Darling Hotel in Sydney’s Star Casino.
