Herman Miller’s new multi-purpose dining table is a stunner

Utilitarian yet totally sleek, Herman Miller’s new Carafe table is a gorgeous piece of design. Created by Australian Charles Wilson, it transforms seamlessly from a work desk to a dining table making it ideal for compact, inner-city spaces.

“In my inner-city apartment, the dining table is the most utilised piece of furniture. It’s the centre around which all activity revolves,” says Charles, who named the table after the vessel used for sharing beverages – a nod to just how communal the dining table is.

Sporting hidden drawers to store your household essentials, they slide out from either side of the table and are ideal for tucking away cables or cutlery. Similarly, cantilevered shelves at each end allow for paperwork or linen storage and the table also has discreet slots for cable connections.

“A dining table should be able to seque from from functional work top to elegant entertaining surface, and back again. It should look as good laden with documents or dinner as it does sparse and bare,” says Charles, whose award-winning designs are notable for their use of natural materials.
