Designer profile: Celebrated UK creative Bethan Gray

A recipient of four Elle Decoration British Design Awards including the coveted ‘Best British Designer’ and ‘Best British Tableware Designer,’ Bethan Gray is one of the UK’s most celebrated furniture and homewares designers. In Australia recently to launch her Shamsian collection, available locally through Living Edge, we caught up Bethan to gain insight into her career trajectory, her approach to design and how her ethnic roots inform her creativity.

Inspired by her ancestors, a nomadic and artistic Rajasthani clan who migrated across Arabia and Persia before settling in Wales, creativity is literally in Bethan’s DNA. “With that kind of background my parents always encouraged me to be creative, which I’m grateful for,” says Bethan who studied three-dimensional design at De De MontFort University in Leicester before winning a prestigious design award, which set her career in motion.

The award was granted by Tom Dixon, the then head of British furniture and homewares giant Habitat. “The prize included an internship and I stayed there for ten years,” says Bethan who found the experience gave her a fabulous grounding in the commercial world, while indulging her love of travel. “I went all over the world to small craft workshops and large fabric makers. I loved the travel and meeting people,” says Bethan.

In 2008, Bethan set up her own studio, with a desire to explore her own creative direction. “I have always been very passionate about working with natural materials, and there wasn’t much of that at the time. I really wanted to push the boundaries with natural materials, technology and traditional craft,” says Bethan. Since launching, her pieces are now stocked in prestigious UK retailers including Harrods and Liberty.

Describing her aesthetic as ‘calm,’ the designer combines natural materials with a modern aesthetic, in unique ways. “I love highlighting natural materials. I also like my collections to have a cultural link to where the product is being made, or to the people making it,” says Bethan whose latest collection uses marble, hand-stained maple wood and brass.

The collection, Shamsian, takes its name from the master craftsman that produces it in Oman. Inspired by the historic Nizwa fort, in Muscat, the range contains some of Bethan’s personal favourites.

“I love the green Nizwa cabinet as I remember how excited I was when I first saw it. We went to a trade fair soon after and we got such a positive reaction which was very satisfying,” says Bethan. The design features an ombre effect that mirrors the sun setting on the walls of the famous castle.

The billowing sails of Oman’s distinctive Dhow boats are another point of inspiration in the Shamsian collection. “The sails are made from sateen strips sewn together and I wanted to recreate the overlapping, billowing effect of the wind,” says Bethan. The elegant pattern work, something of a Bethan Gray design signature, features across furniture and tableware designs.

“Even the most complex pattern becomes harmonious when you get it just right. I think my instinct for geometry comes from my family’s middle eastern heritage.”

A new take on modular furniture for today’s Millennials

Something of a design classic, modular furniture first came to prominence in the 50’s and 60’s but it’s a style that has endured – no doubt due to the flexibility it affords and its space efficiency (something that is of increasing importance). And the latest iteration of the style, designed by Australian designer Alexander Lotersztain, impressed us when it hit our inbox this week. Its clean, sharp lines and technology concessions are particularly noteworthy.

Les Basic

Called ‘Les Basic,’ the range launches at New York Design Week later this month, and is set to be released in Australia in June. It’s been designed with Millennials in mind who favour flexibility and functionality and includes modular furniture, lighting and accessories that can be completely customised for the home or office, depending on the way that you live.

An aerial shot – note the desk attachment behind the sofa. Genius!

The seats feature table attachments and power outlets and the range boasts shelving units, wall and door hooks, lighting and clocks too. The chairs are suitable for alfresco use also, which only adds to their flexibility of use.

We love the in-built power supply!

“Locally designed by an Australian company for the Australian lifestyle, Les Basic can be adapted and customised for commercial and residential settings as well
as being perfect for the new apartment developments in our major cities,” says Jo Mawhinney, head of retail at Living Edge, the exclusive distributor of the range.

Functional storage details abound

Born in Argentina, the collection’s designer Alexander is a celebrated furniture and lighting designer based in Brisbane. His work can be found in the Centre Pompidou in Paris and in 2010 he was bestowed the inaugural Queensland Premier’s Smart State Designer of the Year fellowship award.

Herman Miller’s new multi-purpose dining table is a stunner

Utilitarian yet totally sleek, Herman Miller’s new Carafe table is a gorgeous piece of design. Created by Australian Charles Wilson, it transforms seamlessly from a work desk to a dining table making it ideal for compact, inner-city spaces.

unnamed

“In my inner-city apartment, the dining table is the most utilised piece of furniture. It’s the centre around which all activity revolves,” says Charles, who named the table after the vessel used for sharing beverages – a nod to just how communal the dining table is.

Sporting hidden drawers to store your household essentials, they slide out from either side of the table and are ideal for tucking away cables or cutlery. Similarly, cantilevered shelves at each end allow for paperwork or linen storage and the table also has discreet slots for cable connections.

“A dining table should be able to seque from from functional work top to elegant entertaining surface, and back again. It should look as good laden with documents or dinner as it does sparse and bare,” says Charles, whose award-winning designs are notable for their use of natural materials.

7 common replicas and what the real deal will cost you

Replicas are absolutely everywhere, and when you’re under the impression that the real thing costs an arm and a leg… well I don’t exactly blame some of you for going with the cheap option. However, sometimes the real deal isn’t actually that exy and when they last a lifetime (versus a year or two) and support the actual mastermind who created the design, it may just be worth investing. Below we fill you in on how much seven commonly copied pieces of furniture actually cost. And some are less than you’d think!

At $220, the familiar Componibili 3 Round (front left in the image below) available through Space Furniture, is surprisingly affordable. Coming in many colours and configurations, the 30-year-old design from Kartell is flexible, functional and practical. Slotting into any home setting, be it the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen or living room, it is also displayed at The Museum of Modern Art in New York and at the George Pompidou Centre in Paris.

Componibili 3 Round

Originally designed for Carl Hansen & Son in 1949, the CH24 Wishbone Chair (Jen’s favourite) is a light, sculptural dining chair that is also suitable for relaxed sitting away from the table. The seat is hand-woven in paper cord (unbleached/natural or black) and the frame is available in a variety of hardwoods and coloured finishes. Prices start at $1,100 per chair, and can be purchased through Cult Design.

CH24 Wishbone

Not convinced it’s worth it? See how much work goes into one chair in this video and you may change your mind!

The Adnet Mirror by Gubi is the epitome of luxury. Designed in the ’50s, the distinctive, round leather mirror with equestrian-inspired detailing comes in three sizes and three strap colours (black, olive or brown). Available from Cult Design, prices start at $1,020.

cult adnet mirror

Originally designed for exterior use in French bistros, the Tolix Stool 65cm is perfect for breakfast bars (though we’re a little sick of seeing replicas everywhere on account of how mass produced and cheap they’ve become). With a rigid stackable design, lending itself to a variety of applications, it comes in a large range of finishes and colours. Available through Thonet, prices start at $390. And the real deal is so much nicer and less disposable!

tolix stool

A classic piece of mid-century furniture, the Eames Moulded Plastic Side Chair with Eiffel Base DSR ($615) from Living Edge is as stylish and useful today as when it was designed in 1950. The organic shape and sophisticated lines of the chair, with the streamlined Eiffel Tower wire base, work anywhere in the home. The shell seat has a high, flexible back, a deep seat pocket and a waterfall front edge, so you can sit comfortably even for extended periods. A multitude of colour choices can be paired with a chrome, black or white base. Beware the cheap replicas whose screws fall out. Many are actually quite dangerous!

eames-dsr-lifestyle

Widely considered one of the most significant designs of the 20th century, the Eames Classic Lounge & Ottoman also comes with a significant price tag, $7,990 to be exact! That said, this is a substantial piece of furniture. In continuous production since its introduction in 1956, this timeless design is constructed to last lifetimes. Entirely hand-assembled, the seat is balanced on a five-star, die-cast aluminum base with adjustable stainless steel glides for uneven floors. It is available in a range of finishes from Living Edge.

eames99

Noguchi himself described his Coffee Table as his best furniture design, no doubt because it is extremely reminiscent of his bronze and marble sculptures of the time. Designed for Vitra, it has a glass tabletop that rests on two identical wooden elements placed at right angles. Available in three finishes from Space Furniture, prices start at $3,470.

Top interior stylist Steve Cordony shares his new home office

Switching from full-time interior design editor for Belle magazine to freelance stylist a year ago, Steve Cordony found himself working from home. Having recently purchased the apartment he had rented for years, it was the perfect opportunity to renovate and decorate the perfect creative space! And of course, it is as stylish and beautiful as you’d expect.

stevecordony-2

“The flexibility of working on different projects and collaborating with different clients was the most exciting part about going freelance,” Steve says. “I had been freelance prior to being Belle’s interior design editor and being a creative and unable to sit still for more than five minutes, freelance-land suits my frenetic nature!”

stevecordony-extra

He’s not had much chance to sit still, working on interiors for Mirvac’s new Bondi and Green Square projects, styling for Belle as their style director at-large and working with Myer, Sheridan and advertising clients as well as styling some spectacular events for clients including Sephora, Stoneleigh and L’Oreal. “I have also been working with Waterford as a style contributor and most excitingly, I am working on a couple of product ranges as we speak with some great companies.” We can’t wait to see them!

Now based out of home in Sydney, Steve’s office space is very important to him as he spends so much time there. “I had to make it a space that had a great feel to it with good light. Luckily, we were renovating the rest of the home around the same time so I was able to design the space as a whole and it was much easier logistically with trades etc. I know there’ll come a point soon where I will have to move to a bigger office space, but I’m staying at home for as long as I can!”

stevecordony-6

[contextly_sidebar id=”aLzFVvScwv2EnjFaXccsgs9XfnU7ZBeS”]After renting the space for 3.5 years, when the opportunity to buy it came up, it was a dream come true, especially as Steve had already redesigned the space in his head countless times over! “It was such a blessing not having to move!” He wanted the office space to feel like another room in the home, not even vaguely corporate. “The French panelling and sisal carpet are throughout the rest of the apartment. I am lucky there is great built-in storage so all the boring stuff is hidden and I basically have my double-sided desk and the bar cart from Bowerhouse to ‘style’!”

Not surprisingly, the wallpaper was his the starting point. “Weirdly, it gives the room such a sense of calm and I feel like I’m working in a jungle. It was actually (partner) Michael’s idea as he has loved it ever since we saw it in LA. It’s bold, but also classic at the same time — which sounds odd, but I think it’s because it’s such an iconic print that I hopefully won’t get over in years to come!”

stevecordony-5

The Oluce ‘Atollo’ lamp from Euroluce was last year’s birthday present. “I had coveted this piece ever since I used it in my first assignment while studying at Enmore. Every home has to have a Ficus Lyrata (mine’s from Garden Life) and this adds to the ‘jungle fever’. The re-worked antique art deco desk is from MCM House and I have one ergonomic Herman Miller Aeron chair from Living Edge and one not so ergonomic Gebrüder Thonet 210R chair! I constantly change the accessories and books and have fresh flowers and candles burning 24/7.”

stevecordony-3

stevecordony-7

Aesthetics aside, what else does Steve think is important about a home office from a practical perspective? “Storage! It’s the most important aspect. My desk and the space itself look styled and together but behind the great wall of doors is a whole world of pain! Ok it’s not that bad, but I have drawers filled with fabric samples, kikki.K boxes with documents and shelving for samples and catalogues. And definitely good lighting. In terms of comfort, I’m so glad I invested in the Aeron desk chair as I spend so much time on it! And music — my Sonos system is my friend as I would go crazy working most days by myself in silence!”

stevecordony-9

So, being one of Australia’s top stylists, does partner Michael have much say in the interiors of their home? “We have a rule where Michael looks after the terrace/outside and I am in charge of the interior. But let’s just say that rule is sometimes blurred, mainly from me being a control freak! But I did let him choose the wallpaper after all…”

Steve adds: “I would describe our home style as modern luxe. I like having contemporary and ‘designy’ pieces but most importantly, I want it to have a soul. I love incorporating items from our travels and I am always moving things around from week to week to constantly keep it interesting.”

stevecordony-8

Steve’s tips for creating a home office space you actually want to spend time in

  • Don’t think of the space as an office. Think of it as another beautiful room in the home.
  • Create a mood board using any interior shots or styles you love and work from there.
  • Storage is the most important but it doesn’t have to be the ugly elephant in the room. If you don’t have built-in storage, invest in some functional storage that looks great which you can style and incorporate into the space.

Jacinta & Sonia, Sydney’s Designers in the City

Stylish, sophisticated and fun: just some of the words that come to mind when flipping through the portfolio of Sydney design duo Designers in the City. Co-director Jacinta Woods says their aim is to bring something new to every project, using colour, patterns and textures in new and different ways.

Sonia and Jacinta of Designers in the City
Sonia and Jacinta of Designers in the City

“Each home is different and special in its own way, we strive to create a new look each time we design,” Jacinta says. “We don’t like to box ourselves into a certain look or trend.”

Designers in the City began in 2007 as the brainchild of Jacinta and co-director Sonia Warner. They met while working in the styling department at high end furniture store Living Edge.“I had always wanted to become an interior designer from an early age, constantly changing my room around and advising friends on their bedrooms,” Jacinta says. Sonia worked as a hairdresser for close to 20 years before her study of design and decoration took her on a new career path. Already knowing they enjoyed working together, Jacinta and Sonia decided to start their own business.

Designers in the City lounge

Although their individual styles are quite different–Jacinta describes hers as “subdued, classic and defined” while Sonia’s is “quirky, fun and alive”–they find this helps them in their work: “We always seem to meet somewhere in between.” Jacinta says they draw inspiration from places like Instagram through to designers like American Kelly Wearstler, and Brit Abigail Ahern.
