With temperatures cooling and more time spent indoors, interiors can be redefined to warm the home through colours and textures. The latest styling trends see minimalist clean settings foregone for an eclectic mix of darker hues, heavy-set fabrics and contrasting materials.
Metal features in accessories and larger furniture pieces. We’re seeing a return to steel as a dominant element, coupled with brass and bronze within single signature items or trailed over multiple elements within a room. The shimmer displayed through this medium commands attention, lifts a room and can be applied in both traditional and modern settings. Both high sheen to matt finishes are being utilised this season.
Natural mediums like marble, are being incorporated in unique ways. Traditionally reserved for bathrooms and kitchen design, this surface is now seen set within lamps, coasters and cabinetry facings. Like metal, marble offers a sturdy and elegant aesthetic – instantly adding sophistication and class to any living space.
The 70s are back with rattan featuring in occasional pieces like chairs and furniture panels. This natural fibre creates an earthy, comforting home feel, with shades of browns used to create a warming a look. Teaming it with weighty fabrics completes the winter look.
Heavy set velvet in darker hues like navy and green sofas or curtains provide signature styling in rooms. Fabric sofas are ideal for colder seasons, providing a cosy feel. For those with leather sofas, an alternative styling idea is to utilise velvet in decorative accessories like throws and cushions.
Apart from textures and colours, patterned fabrics are being added to create a point of interest to a space. These patterns are typically bold against a backdrop of plain linens and natural textures.
Adopting these winter styling cues can actually create the illusion of heat and bring a greater comfort and feel to your home this season.
