Real home: Modern Italian inspired new build in Sydney

“The clients wanted their home to be edgy, ultra-modern and colourful. They love that Italian chic B&B Italia/Poliform look and they also love dark and moody tones but wanted pops of colour to create interest,” says interior designer Lauren Mahoney of Decoroom who worked on this family home in Sydney’s South Coogee recently.

Home to a family of four, the new abode was built by Starr Constructions before Decoroom was brought in for its interior design prowess. “We were engaged to create the hard finish specifications throughout the entire home. We were then engaged for our interior design services to fit out the entire home with custom made joinery, furniture, lighting and art,” says Lauren.

Chevron patterned wallpaper, concrete and black accents combine to create androgynous spaces that are softened by the addition of rugs, voluminous sheer curtains and wallpaper. “All of the rugs are custom made by TAPPETI and designed by us. The curtains were also custom made by our in-house workroom before being hung on a recessed ceiling track,” says Lauren.

“The blackened chevron flooring is from Tongue N Groove and the beautiful slumped glass tile behind the BBQ and kitchen splash back is from Di Lorenzo. The artworks were commissioned by Decoroom from Gabrielle Jones and Kate Clarkson,” says Lauren.

Special mention must be made of the home’s lighting – a series of statement pieces. “Most of the lighting is from a beautiful Italian brand Artemide who create contemporary architectural lighting. The bedroom lighting is from the English designer Lee Broom. The magnificent bell pendant lights in the front entrance are from Café Culture + Insitu and they engage you upon entry,” says Lauren.

The pendant lights in the stairwell are rather gorgeous too – they’re smoked, hand blown glass and are from District through the Homeware Gallery.

The master bedroom is a broody, sumptuous space that features Poliform bedsides and a unique Phillip Jefferies wallpaper. “The wallpaper is completely special and features a laser cut timber veneer applied onto a paper backing to create a stunning effect,” says Lauren.
