Sibella’s Styling Tips

As promised, a few tips and words of wisdom from last night’s Emotive Interiors workshop with Sibella Court in Sydney.

What you should have in your styling toolkit:

  1. A staple gun
  2. Push pins
  3. Hot glue gun
  4. Spirit level
  5. 3M hooks of all sizes
  6. 3M Blue Painter’s Tape
  7. Blu Tack
  8. Paint brushes
  9. Tape measure
  10. A list of items and pieces of furniture you’re searching for but haven’t found yet!

Sibella says:

  • I can’t get enough of old rope. I buy it at auctions. I love how it doesn’t sit flat. I like it when things protrude out into the space and make you look at them. They might start a little conversation.
  • (On styling) It’s an ability but you can train yourself to be better at it.
  • I love flags. Bunting, pirate flags, all of it!
  • The great thing about a raw brick wall is it often already has holes in it then you can just get some rusty nails (my favourite things!) and start hanging things!
  • You can paint a wall in 15 minutes and change the whole feel of a room. If you’re renting you can paint (don’t necessarily tell the landlord, just paint it back to the boring beige colour before you leave!).
  • There are no rules. I particularly hate it when people say painting a room in a dark colour makes it smaller. There’s nothing wrong with making a space feel more intimate.
  • Collect things which have memories and make you happy. There’s no need for them to stay in a drawer, you can make them into your own wall art.
  • Colour palettes are a great way to give yourself boundaries when decorating so you don’t get overwhelmed by all the different options.
  • Use chalkboard paint on whatever you like. Try it on a fridge. (I’m so going to do this. IA)
  • I love to wrap a collection around the corner of a room.
  • I like everything not being at eye level.

So there you go, there are no rules! Have fun with it!
