Styling tip 3: Colourise your life!

Colour is one of the most important aspects to a styling scheme and yet, ironically, it is what people are most hesitant to introduce. This aversion to embracing colour is amusing to me since the earth is, naturally, one of the greatest examples of how colour has an effect on its surroundings.

Tip

You can totally alter a room’s atmosphere, mood or function by simply painting the walls a new colour. When looking at different options, make sure you also consider the type of light in a room as this plays a major part in accenting a colour’s overall mood and feel. It can be overwhelming when faced with the immense selection of colours, tones and finishes out there, so don’t be afraid to ask for a professional opinion from an interior designer or colour consultant.

Task

Pinpoint a room to get started!

Again, it’s good to pick a smaller room that you don’t mind experimenting with – like the laundry room!

Shortlist some bold or bright colours that automatically appeal to you – it’s okay if they are on completely opposite ends of the spectrum.

If this is a DIY project, get sample pots of your top 3 choices and brush a few strokes onto the wall to compare.

• When painting there are a few factors to consider:

You might need to wash down previous layers.

Use even brushstrokes when painting so you won’t see them once the paint is dry.

Use quality paint and an even measure between coats.

The result? A splash of colour and energy that has infused an area that isn’t a central focal point. Now that you have made at least one bold colour choice for your home, you can approach the rest of your space with a more experienced eye.
