Brisbane makeover: Amazing backyard resort in burbs

Originally built in 1967, and located in the Brisbane suburb of Mansfield, this five-bedroom, three-bathroom, two storey home underwent an incredible overhaul recently, courtesy of the team at Zou Build. “We wanted to pay homage to the original mid-century style of the home with a little bit of a coastal feel,” says Zou Build’s interior designer Christal Fysentzou, who used a palette of clean white, timber and brass in realising her vision.

“I love the simplicity of the final look. When flipping, you always need to keep the end buyer in mind, so it’s important to not put too much of your own personal style into design,” says Christal.

One of the main challenges with the property was its 1960’s ceiling heights; they were lower than the minimum 2.4 metres required today. “Buying the property was a huge gamble for us. We didn’t know if we could make the lower level legal height, which was essential to creating the open plan space. It was really going to make or break the project,” says Christal.

Thankfully the engineering approval came through, giving the Zou Build team permission to raise the ceiling height on both the ground, and upper floors.

The property was designed with a growing family in mind; it now has a large kitchen, two living areas, a home office, and garden with a large gated swimming pool. “It’s got a space for everyone. We gave a lot of thought to what we wanted as a family and translated that into this home,” says Christal.

The master bedroom, unrecognisable from before, features a deluxe, custom Stegbar Galleria wardrobe in Nataio Walnut finish. “Wardrobes can be so much more than just somewhere to store clothes. Our walk-in wardrobe includes its own HAFEL speaker system to add a bit of fun to getting ready,” says Christal.

The robe also features incorporated lighting that flows into the ensuite and a custom Stegbar curved backlit mirror completes the look. The lighting choices were the perfect solution for the spaces, which are low in natural light.

The ensuite’s curved mirror is the perfect foil for the angular cabinetry and tiles that feature elsewhere in the space. The simple, clean aesthetic is continued with custom made Stegbar frameless shower screens and Meir brass shower fittings.

But arguably the most show-stopping part of the renovation is the backyard – it’s a stylish urban oasis that is ideally suited to the outdoorsy Queensland lifestyle. “The outdoor area is really quite amazing and it’s a bit like having a resort in the burbs,” says Christal.

While it’s an older Brisbane suburb, Mansfield is proving increasingly popular for young families, something that drew Zou Build to the area. “The majority of the houses in the area are dated and need some love, so it is the perfect time to start a renovation trend, to generate a new wave of emerging home buyers.”

Cathedral ceiling hero of 1980’s seaside shack reno

Located on the Mornington Peninsula, this 1980’s rough diamond got the makeover treatment recently, courtesy of interior designer Tara Daniels of Seahaven Interiors. Nestled on a large bush block, 10 minutes from the ocean, the revamp highlights the home’s natural elements and features gorgeous pops of on-trend pink and green.

“About a year ago out clients asked us to transform their newly purchased 1980’s shack to a cosy coastal retreat. It was a pleasure to create the perfect holiday home for their extended family,” says Tara Daniels of the four-bedroom, two-bathroom, single-storey home.

The home was in need of a lot of love; much of it was rotting but there were a couple of original features that had a lot of potential. While both needed painting, the timber wall panels, were one highlight together with the cathedral ceilings which have arguably become the highlight of the home.

“The cathedral ceiling and beams are spectacular. One side of the house had the cathedral ceiling while the other was lower which felt quite claustrophobic,” says Tara who elected to paint the lower side and all the beams white (Taubmans ‘Miss Universe’), instantly opening up the space. “It focused attention on the gorgeous ceiling,” says Tara.

“The timber wall paneling was already there and it’s a real show-stopper,” says Tara who painted it in Taubmans ‘Flint Smoke,’ a lovely soft green that echoes the bush landscape outside. Green features in the home’s kitchen too; a unique choice, it was one of the first that the clients made.

“The colour that we chose for the kitchen cupboard was pointed out in our first consult. It jumped out at the clients as it’s very natural, earthy and reminds them of the bushland that surrounds the home,” says Tara of the cupboard fronts which are Laminex ‘Possum.’

A monumental transformation, Tara is understandably very proud of the entire project. “I loved transforming it to a warm, cosy and welcoming holiday home. The flooring, paint and window furnishings have given the space a new life.”

IKEA before and after: a family living room transformed

As part of its commitment to providing relevant interior design solutions, IKEA regularly ventures out into Australian communities to find out what people really need and want in their homes. “IKEA visits homes all around Australia to interview families in the local community, and find out what they dream about for their space and what frustrates them about their home. Our interior design teams sift through this information and use it as inspiration to design the unique and creative solutions you see in the showrooms in store,” says Christine Gough, interior design leader. Almost 500 homes are visited every year.

And for the first time, the IKEA interior designers have put their design solutions into practice in real living rooms including this one in Adelaide’s Hallet Cove. “Our interior designers worked with this family to find out what frustrated them about their space and how they could make their living room dreams a reality,” says Christine who shared her trade tricks with us too.

Create dedicated spaces for parents & kids
The young family of four aren’t fond of clutter but given the space is used for playing, office work, relaxing and getting the kids ready for the day, that is a challenge. “We created dedicated areas for kids and adults to help zone off the living room. Lauren and Josh now have their own customised wall mounted computer station using SVALNAS. It is incredibly compact and still fits in with the aesthetic of the room, so Lauren can watch the kids as they play while she gets on with her work,” says Christine.

In the opposite corner of the room, the kids’ area houses toys, nappies and blankets. “It is important to keep it low to the ground so the kids can reach their toys and have access to the storage so they can put their toys away!” says Christine.

Personalisation
“This family have started to create a lovely boho Scandinavian vibe in their house which is simple and neutral. This was a beautiful base to work with and allowed us to have fun with bursts of colour. From sea shells and sand in vases, to Buddha statues and macramé hangers, they have a well-established unique style. It’s important not to hide these things away, as your favourite trinkets and collectables add character and spirit to the space,” says Christine.

The designers further personalised the space, and created a cohesive feel, by using a palette of repeated textures and colours. “In this home, we framed beautiful pieces of fabric and added them to frame galleries to add interest and depth and popped them all around the room. The beauty in this solution is that not only is it super simple to do, but really affordable!”

Substitute shelves with hooks
The home’s owner, Lauren, makes a lot of handmade items and the IKEA team decided they’d be better presented using hooks instead of shelving. “We wanted to move away from the traditional wall shelf used to stack frames and find a way to really bring to life this fantastic brick wall. Instead we opted for wall hooks that allow us to show off Laurens amazing handmade items. The KUBBIS rack is only $19.99, so it’s a really affordable and easy way to transform the wall,” says Christine.

The wall hooks also incorporate greenery and hats and provide an ever-changing tableau. “The best thing about this solution is you can easily change up the look on the daily, weekly or seasonally – whenever you feel like it!”

DIY wall art
A favourite look for IKEA, the gallery wall gets a different treatment here with the family’s vinyl collection on display. “The gallery wall is incredibly sleek and stylish and allows you to create an ever-changing feature that shows off your personality,” says Christine who recommends putting your belongings into groups of like objects. “This will help create symmetry and balance within your space.”
