Tri-level Melbourne terrace transformed with eclectic touches

From Morrocan patterned floor tiles to Chinese antiques and Italian and industrial accents, this tri-level Melbourne townhouse was transformed recently by interior designer Tommaso Spinzi of Spinzi Design. “I like a bit of quirkiness and the owner of this home is Italian so I wanted to keep that feeling and play a bit with old and new,” says Tommaso of his eclectic aesthetic.

Lounge

“My favourite part of the renovation is the new entry. I like the bold green neon artwork from Kazari that I paired with an emerald green, original antique Chinese table. I like the playfulness, the expression in the girl’s eyes and the bit of movement there.” The former four-bedroom home has been reconfigured into a three-bedroom plus sitting room abode.

As for a design brief, the owners favour clean lines and interesting pieces. “They like to keep things quite simple and modern and they don’t like too many things. I didn’t have much of a budget to play with but they still wanted some interesting pieces. The main focus was to reconfigure the space,” says Tommaso.

Multi-purpose room: Sitting, TV & study

The ground floor used to house a fourth bedroom but that is now a multi-purpose space that works as a sitting room, television room and study. “I’m not a fan of visible televisions. The bookcase looks smart and classic but the TV is hidden behind, as well as a pull-out desktop that enables the space to be used as an office too,” says Tommaso. This room also features a beautiful blue wool and silk hexagon rug from Hali, Matt Blatt black leather chairs and an abstract artwork by John Martono.

Kitchen

The room also features an interesting carpet/vinyl product on the floors called Bolon. “It’s very expensive but very nice and it allowed for a seamless join with the existing polished concrete floor. It’s washable – you can literally wipe it with a mop,” says Tommaso of the hygienic, hard-wearing flooring solution.

Dining

Moving up a level, the second floor houses a lounge and outdoor terrace, kitchen and dining room too –  the entire space was reconfigured. “The kitchen now has a fabulous walk-in pantry and a little bar for serving cocktails. The entire floor looks completely different.”

Outdoor room

The stunning Moroccan tile that features in the outdoor room caught our eye. “The tile is from Ceradomus and it’s in a Marrakech style. I wanted a Mediterranean look out there,” says Tommaso.

From weary to wonderful – check out this real apartment reno

When interior designer Tommaso Spinzi, of Spinzi Design, was called on to make a few small changes to this Melbourne bayside apartment, he didn’t expect the project to become so elaborate. “The original concept was to just renovate the kitchen but it ended up being almost the entire home!”

1

Owned by a couple in their sixties, the apartment’s interior hadn’t been touched since the 1980s. Not wanting to move, as they love the apartment’s location overlooking Melbourne’s Albert Park, they decided a contemporary overhaul was needed instead.

“They didn’t want to spend a lot so we tried hard to stick to a budget,” says Tommaso, who kept many of the existing furnishings and only replaced those that required it. “I didn’t change any of the curtains. Where I could, we kept what we had.”

The glossy, yellow-toned herringbone timber floor was sanded back and transformed with a limewash finish for a more contemporary feel.  The dining room suite was altered from a red-hued mahogany to a distressed black finish.

“It was sanded back and re-stained, first with grey and then black – we rubbed it back so that the grey came through to give it an aged look,” says Tommaso, who reupholstered the chairs in a French fabric from Ashcraft. “It’s a very interesting fabric as it feels like aged leather but it’s a textile.”

The kitchen was completely redesigned and a wall was removed to open out the space from the dining room to the kitchen and the bathroom was completely redesigned too. “We completely changed the configuration of the bathroom and all the finishes. The black tapware is from Elite tapware in Armadale,” says Tommaso.

Tommaso designed a number of bespoke pieces for the home: the joinery in the kitchen, the mirrored coffee tables, side tables, a console and mirrors. Existing artwork was modernised with new frames too.

Melbourne warehouse gets chic, industrial makeover

Under the direction of Italian interior designer Tommaso Spinzi, of Spinzi Design, this Fitzroy warehouse was transformed recently from a dated 80’s space to a stylish, contemporary abode.

“The property is housed inside an old warehouse in the Melbourne hipster suburb of Fitzroy,” says Tommaso who used custom joinery, Italian tiles and accents of black throughout the renovation.

“The owners were willing to put a bit of money into the project and were keen to respect the origins of the building,” says Tommaso who designed a concrete-look benchtop in the kitchen alongside matte black cabinetry for a masculine finish.

“Not everyone would want a black kitchen for example, but it’s unique and reflected the style of the warehouse surrounds. The subway tiles in the bathroom also go hand in hand with the industrial feel. For me it conjures the feel of a hip Chelsea apartment in New York,” says Tommaso.

Apart from the on-trend black Phoenix tapware, Italian marble hexagon floor tiles and blonde wood round feature towel hooks, the bathroom also had a skylight installed as part of the overhaul. “The owners wanted a lot of light so we cut the roof to bring light into the bathroom,” says Tommaso.

One of the bigger aspects of the renovation was the renovation of the existing timber floor. “The main floor covering was a yellow, gold timber. It was very 80’s and glossy so we stained the original floor with a black stain. It was difficult to kill the yellow,” says Tommaso.

“I like to look at people’s lifestyle as a whole,” says Italian-born Tommaso, who is hosting a group tour to Salon del Mobile in Milan in April.
