Why I chose Quick-Step Impressive Ultra for our new floors

Sponsored by Quick-Step

There has been a lot of interest in our new floors and as choosing which option to go with can sometimes be a bit overwhelming, I thought I’d share what we learned from the experience and how we came up with our final choice. I hope it helps others facing the same dilemma!

I always knew I wanted an engineered floor rather than solid timber for practical reasons: easy to clean and water and scratch resistant. Although I love real timber and it looks beautiful, it doesn’t mix well with water and I knew I wanted this flooring in our kitchen (and potentially our future renovated bathrooms too). I also know, with a small and boisterous child riding trikes and goodness knows what else around the house, I couldn’t be precious about our new floors so they needed to be able to cop a lot of wear (not to mention any potential dishwasher leaks, dropped drinks and toilet, well, accidents!).

The next big decision was whether to go for premium vinyl plank (which seemed to be increasingly on my radar) or quality laminate. What’s the difference you may ask? I’ll try and explain it in layman’s terms!

From a look perspective, there is not a huge difference and if you’re comparing quality examples of each, you may not find one. You’ll also find lots of design and colour options which convincingly resemble real timber. Both are easy to clean (yay!). On price, there’s not a big difference between good quality versions of both.

Laminate is typically more scratch-resistant and made from HFD or high-density fiberboard (made up of recycled hardwood, which for obvious reasons, doesn’t tend to be waterproof). Vinyl is a flexible, waterproof material. However, the new generation of quality laminate floors (like Quick-Step’s Impressive Ultra which we chose, and their latest, Majestic) come with a waterproof surface and are therefore suitable for use even in bathrooms.

Laminate is harder and noisier to walk on, but with the right underlay, you get a quieter and more cushioned feel. And you may prefer a harder feel underfoot, more like the real thing.

Impressive Ultra floors are extra durable and have a superior authentic colour, design and structure – including a super realistic bevel that mimics a genuine timber floor finish.

For me, a lot of the choice came down to aesthetics, as well as quality and brand confidence. I am across all the major flooring brands and suppliers as part of my job and had always heard great things about Quick-Step and been impressed with their innovation. I also loved the samples I saw in showrooms and was hugely reassured by the 25-year guarantee. There is no way I’m going to live in this house that long, but it’s great to know the floors are covered for that period, as well as 10 years for water resistance.

I borrowed multiple samples from the local showroom and I’d advise you to do the same as they’ll look really different under normal residential lighting and in natural light, as well as in different parts of your home. At the end of the day, the look of Impressive Ultra in Classic Oak Beige was just perfect for us. I had no hesitation in picking it, even though it is a really big decision and one you don’t want to get wrong and regret later!

On that note, all flooring is not created equal, and having had other brands’ samples in my home for comparison, I would just say that this in one area in your home where you should spend as much as you can afford. Having floors laid is a major hassle. You have to move everything and there’s a certain amount of upheaval. It’s also an investment, and you really don’t want to have to make it twice if you buy something which doesn’t wear well. And nothing gets wear and tear like floors!

We absolutely wanted something light to brighten up our home, which doesn’t have great natural light everywhere. We did consider Quick-Step’s Majestic product too, which has the same waterproof qualities and some amazing designs, but we felt the extra-long planks were just too long for some of the smaller rooms in our place.

Although you can DIY the click system, we fully admit we are not handy, and because our subfloor needed a lot of levelling, we used the professionals recommended by Floating Floors Direct in Hornsby. Owner Bill Grogan was also great for expert advice, with many years’ experience, and he helped us decide Majestic wouldn’t work for us.

We are over the moon with our floors! I mean, just look at these picture! The floors and the kitchen have changed our home so much and I’m still pinching myself it’s the same “Nanna house” to be honest! Months of trike-riding later and it’s as good as new.

If you have any other questions about choosing your floor, please write them in the comments and I’ll try and help!

Can you use a steam mop on your new floors? Trying to figure out what flooring system is the best to clean (and I don’t want tiles again) is pretty tricky!

Hi Jen, Happy New Year to you and your family and may I say your house looks beautiful!
I am not up on all this modern flooring , so please excuse my ignorance! Did your skirting boards have to come up to lay your flooring and do they put something around your existing kitchen cabinets?

Thanks Maria for your kind comments! Not silly questions at all. Yes, all the skirting had to come off (I didn’t like it anyway) and was replaced with new afterwards. With the kitchen, it went in not long before the floors, so we left the kickboards off and lay the floor to just under the cabinets and then fit the kickboards afterwards. If you have an existing kitchen they’d either remove the kicks, run the floor under, then cut down the kicks and replace them over the top (preferable), or it would probably be possible to run the flooring right up to the kickboards and then put a matching scotia (like a small edging the same colour as the floor) around the edges. If you have a look at the post about my kitchen you can see this Scotia around my breakfast bar: https://staging.theinteriorsaddict.com/big-kitchen-reveal Hope that helps! Jen

Thanks heaps Jen and I see what you mean about the scotia (I wondered what this was called). I think I would use this instead of taking off the skirtings.
Thank you for your time and knowledge and I might be pinching some of your ideas from your renovation too! (hope you don’t mind!)

Hi,
I am debating with myself what kind of flooring would be best. I have pulled up the carpets and there is a pine floor. I have some pine already and it has been estapoled and is very dark. I heard there are ways to varnish to floor and it comes up a light beachy color? Do you know about this? Thanks.

I’m no expert but there are many ways you can sand back and stain, varnish or whitewash. Perhaps start by having a chat with someone at your local Bunnings about the different treatments available for sanded back pine? It’s great to save them if you can!

Hi I work in a paint shop if you use a water based flooring estapol this will keep your pine a light colour and not go golden / yellow as it’s the turps in the oil based products which yellows over time

l have new laminated floors installed just find out that one end from the plank has nonot reach the other end and shows a darker line diferent from the rest they are kind of white what should l do.

Hi Jen, I’m looking to install this product on your recommendation, but I’m reading lots of reviews indicating that Quickstep is difficult to clean and leaves visible “footprints” everywhere? How have you found cleaning? I note that you mentioned using a damp mop as recommended? Do you see visible footprints (kids hand prints) on your gorgeous floors? Thanks for your articles, they’ve helped narrow down my flooring choices.

Hand on heart I have NEVER experienced that, Nicola! We use a damp mop with Method floor cleaner which I LOVE the smell of and it I non toxic. I probably mop them once or twice a fortnight because I find they don’t show dirt.

Thank you for your blog and recommendation. It made us decide to go with Quick Step Laminate for all our carpeted areas. We chose Impressive Ultra in Spotted Gum which was installed a week ago today.
We are thrilled with it so far, and with two dogs running around, have found no scratches at all in the week it’s been laid. Keeping it clean is a breeze compared to dragging out a vacuum cleaner each day to vacuum up the dog hair! Pretty impressed with it.

Hi Raine,

We are considering Impressive Ultra in Spotted Gum as well.

Any chance you can share some pictures of your flooring please? And any feedback since you’ve probably been using them for about a year.

Cheers

Hi Jen, I am impressed by your review and photos (gorgeous), however, I am very concerned by the external reviews I have read online. A lot of people claim the Quick Step product has declined dramatically recently, and that it’s not waterproof and dents extremely easily; have you found this to be the case at all? Our builder recommended the product when we were all set to go with an AC3 laminate. We want it laid in our kitchen and to be dog and child (also adult) proof!!

Hi Rebecca! We have not been precious with our floor at all and it has seen plenty of spills and trike-riding and kids running around and I haven’t noticed a single scuff or scratch. I am still completely in love with it, find it a dream to clean and EVERYONE who comes here wants to know what it is!

Hi Jen, I love the look of this floor but I am worried that it will collect dirt/grime along the bevels. Have you found this to be a problem?

Love this flooring! I had the same issue with old fashioned parquetry flooring which made the room so dark We chose the pale grey colour with acoustic underlay. So easy to clean and dog proof! My only regret is that there wasnt anything waterproof when we were looking so my kitchen is in tiles and I would have liked it to flow through. Wish I could afford to have it all done again Lol!

Hi Jasmine, You will need Quite Step Combilay (5 stars rating) if you live in a unit or apartment.

Hi, your floors are gorgeous – I’m thinking of getting the exact same! Before I purchase I’m a little unsure of the undertones. What undertones would say the classic oak beige has? Thank you, it’s a great post!

Great review. I was going to go for sandblasted Oak which I love but I think I may do a u-turn and choose something like Classic Oak Natural or Natural Varnished Oak as I think it may contrast better with some of the oak furniture I already own. The Classic Oak Natural in particular, has a varied colour which will hopefully contrast well with a variety of different wood and furniture. Nothing set in stone though until the samples arrive.

Definitely a great idea to get decent sized samples and move them around the house. If you have a lot of timber furniture you really want to get the colour right. Good luck!

Thank you and thanks for taking the time to write this article. It has really helped me make up my mind up about what I want and what is practical, especially with dogs running around the place.

Hi there,

Please can you tell me if your floor was completely level and did any levelling need done?

I have dips and cracks in my floor and have been advised that the underlay will be sufficient to level it though I’m not sure myself…

Many thanks

HI jen
Would you say your images reflect the right colour it throws back in real life? In full sun does it still have alittle warmth? I was going to go a deeper tone..but they start to throw yellow back..hense why beige may be the go. I have had a sample but still struggling to choose!

Hi Jen,
We are looking at having the majestic range of this flooring installed in our home next week and I was wondering if you have had any issues with fading?
We have one section of our home that is in direct sunlight for quite a few hours during the day and this was our main concern.
Any help would be great!
Thank you

That’s great news! – not the dent, that it hasn’t faded 🙂 Thanks Jen for taking the time to reply.
I can’t wait to have it installed!

Wow, how great to come across your post. We are deciding on a flooring and at my feet is a sample of Impressive Ultra Classic Oak Beige!!
Great to see your photos. So much better than a sample.
Did you proceed with flooring the bathroom?
What caused the dent? All flooring will dent of course.
Thanks Jen

We went tiles in the bathroom because we needed to create a fall for the open shower. But we had ice leak from our fridge during recent power outage and didn’t affect the floor at all while the bottom of a cabinet was ruined. It’s tough stuff! not sure about the dent but I’ve already forgotten where it is and it was about 2mm long! Go for it, it’s great!

Hi!
I just find this article. Thank you for it!
I’m just checking to see how you are getting on with the floor now (January 2021). All good still?

We are seriously considering installing the Impressive Ultra and there are so many reviews that conflict it is hard to make a decision!

Hi there! Absolutely love the floor still and it’s one of the best things we have ever put into the house! Looks like new despite heavy use my two young boys and their trikes!

Hi Jen. Thank you for answering all these questions so long after you put your floor down. We are thinking Impressive, are you still happy with it?
Although you didnt put in your bathroom, would you? What about your laundry. Many thanks Therese

I’m so delighted with it. Hand on heart it looks as good as the day it went in. Not in laundry or bathroom, no, but I had a leak from melted ice in the fridge during a 5-day power outage which ruined the bottom of the kitchen cabinet next to it (had to be replaced due to water damage), and the floor was perfectly fine!

Hi Jen, thank you for your post on Quick Step Ultra. We have had the same installed in our home and we are really happy. Can I ask which Method product you use to clean the floor? And which type of microfiber mop? As I am scared to damage the floor with too much water.
Many thanks,
Robyn

Absolutely! It’s the almond floor cleaner and I use the Koh mop but I squirt the cleaner straight onto the floor rather than fill up the mop bottle. I think any microfibre kind of mop would work just as well. My cleaner uses the same product with a different microfibre mop.
