After years of custom designing for projects, it made sense for interior designer David Hicks to team up with Cadrys to design his own rug range.
Although they may not be officially launched until after Christmas, they’re already available and word is getting around, both here and in LA, where David’s practice has a studio. The ‘Sun’ design is already being showcased at Erin V Maison in West Hollywood.
“The inspiration for the rug designs has come from my love of vintage combined with luxury materials,” says David.
Shagreen is inspired by the random texture in stingray skins; Sun is inspired by by a sunburst and Moroccan is inspired by the patterns of 1960s Marakesh.
“I wanted every design to tell a story and again complement the textures and materials we use in our work. This range is a high end luxury range combining silk and wool using a hand knotted process,” he explains. “The colourways are based on silvers, pale greens, chocolates, charcoal and natural soft colours that best suit the nature of our design work.” They can however be custom made in any colour combination.
They’re handmade in Tibet using traditional methods. Silk is added to the wool to give a sheen and a luxurious look and feel.
David’s Rug Rules
- A rug anchors the furniture in a room. All furniture should sit on a rug within a space and on a hard floor, never wall to wall carpet.
- A rug can make a room. It is a very important accessory that can set the whole mood for a decorative scheme.
- Always opt for a large rug as small ones do not give the illusion of space and can make a room look smaller.
- Ensure all your furniture will sit comfortably on top of the rug, not half on and half off.
- Contrast the texture of the rug with the floor it is going on. Try adding, for example, a textured rug to a very shiny and smooth floor.
- A rug should never be boring but it doesn’t have to be too bold or over the top either. The more highly patterned and colourful, the cheaper it can look.
David specialises in providing bespoke design experiences for private residences, residential developments, hotels, restaurants, retail stores and corporate offices. He was judged one of the top three design practices in Australia at this year’s Belle/Coco Republic Interior Design Awards.
“The exciting thing about rug design and weaving is it really is art,” says David.
