Exclusive: Art Hide and Amigos de Hoy’s Spring ranges

With five little girls between them, sisters Kura Perkins and Bree Hay-Hendry are experts when it comes to designing products that can handle the demands of grubby feet and sticky hands!

The brains behind cowhide rug label Art Hide and homewares brand Amigos de Hoy, their designs aim to be beautiful, high-quality and most importantly sturdy. “We like to design products that we’d have at home,” explains Bree. “Something we would love to wake up to every day and that can also survive inevitable mishaps!”

While Art Hide predominately specialise in high-end, made-to-measure rugs, this Spring they have expanded their ready-made collection to include innovative hide finishes. “The new release sees more intricate techniques employed,” says Kura. “For example, the Sueno rug, which is our take on a traditional Persian rug with decorative tiling, laser burning and hand painting with gold. It’s strikingly beautiful. We’ve also launched our new Alta by Art Hide range, which combines smaller tiles and tessellation’s with pops of colour, delivering on style but saving on price.” How we like the sound of that!

Over at Amigos de Hoy, the offering is hugely diverse; think everything from rugs, cushions and wall decor to tabletop products and fashion. With high-quality, handmade and high impact designs, the ready-made homewares pack a punch when it comes to value. “This Spring we have included a much wider range of rag rugs and an extension on our best-selling dhurrie rugs,” explains Kura. “We believe the unique designs and fun accents offer real value for our customers. In addition we’ve designed more wall decor, such as Wes the Lion and the fabulous new oversized Liberty Tassel. They really add personality to any room.”

Designed from both ends of the country (Kura resides in Perth, while Bree is in Sydney), the sisters manage to make it work thanks to 10-plus calls a day and a very complementary skill set. “Bree is really strong in certain areas that I wouldn’t have a clue about such as the technical skills of putting together detailed designs, renders and graphics,” explains Kura. “Meanwhile I am the marketing person, risk-taker and very business development focused. I have no problems picking up the phone. Bree can be a little shyer in that regard, although she has no problems being direct with me!” Oh, sisters!
