The story behind Amigos de Hoy’s closure & what’s next!

When Amigos de Hoy launched around eight years ago, it was the more affordable, bohemian little sister to the much-loved Art Hide brand. With sisters Kura Perkins and Bree Hay-Hendry at the helm, the brand amassed a cult following who were drawn to its unique rug and homewares designs. But as with many small businesses, things became stressful behind the scenes due to a changing retail environment and the effects of the pandemic.

Some of Amigos de Hoy’s iconic wares

“Even when thriving, Amigos de Hoy is a business of tight margins and it has a high-cost base that’s unavoidable; staff, storage and the cost of holding stock. Plus, it’s difficult for a smaller boutique player to play in what has become a very competitive space in the past four years with big business coming in,” says Kura Perkins referencing the move by many mass-market brands into the homewares arena.

“It’s bittersweet and it was hard to make the call to close as there is a sense of failure. Everyone says that retail is ok, but I know for a fact that it’s very tough out there and for us we’re just being honest. When you’re talking about tight margins and employing staff it’s very stressful for a ‘mum and dad’ family business,” says Kura.

Central to the decision to close the brand was the growing and continued success of sister brands Art Hide and Ground Control. Both rug brands are made to order which means the duo can avoid holding large amounts of stock. And in a world where people are drawn to bespoke solutions, both brands can offer their customers a custom design service. Where Art Hide offers fully customisable hide rugs, the Ground Control range is made from wool, cotton, jute and silk.

“Art Hide was already established, and we have built up Ground Control now to the point where we really don’t need Amigos de Hoy anymore. There’s something to be said for focussing on what you’re good at an what’s yielding us the most benefit,” says Kura who says that both businesses are thriving here and in the US.

While both businesses have in-stock products, potential customers can use the ‘Try it at home’ room service where you can upload a picture of your space and receive a render of your preferred rug in situ. In addition, for just $5, you can order a sample box online to see the fabrics in real life before making a purchase. The custom turnaround is 4-6 weeks for Art Hide and 6-8 weeks for Ground Control.

“In addition to residential work, we’re doing lots of commercial work too. Those two businesses offer a much more sustainable business model and they’re going really well.”

Customisable, ethical, textured rugs from Amigos de Hoy

A fully customisable and ethical rug range, ‘Ground Control’ is the latest offering from the talented duo behind Amigos de Hoy and Art Hide. Packed with rich natural fibres and raw materials including jute, hemp, cotton and pure wool (many with metallic touches), each rug is handmade to order within six-to-eight weeks.

“The collection embodies open air, sun drenched days, bare feet and timelessness, but with a spirited, fun edge,” says the brand’s co-founder Kura Perkins.

And with custom rugs representing over 60 percent of the annual revenue for Art Hide, it made sense to extend the bespoke option to the Amigos de Hoy brand. “Art Hide has seen consistent and substantial year on year growth for our design service and the custom rugs category in general. The types of large and complex rugs we are now doing in Australia, the USA and UAE, in particular, have convinced us of the need to extend our custom design service,” says Kura.

Teeming with texture, the neutral, classic range has been designed to complement virtually any style of décor and the rugs start from $920. “We really wanted to do beautiful timeless patterns in rich natural fibres. We wanted to design styles that would create a focal point for a room, but also be subtle enough to blend seamlessly with pieces you may already own,” says Bree Hay-Hendry, the brand’s designer.

As for the rugs themselves, the pictures don’t really do them justice – having seen and felt them in real life, the textures are beautiful, and l particularly love the way some of them have combined natural fibres with metallic thread. “We wanted to really push the construction and weave forward and do something new in the rug world. You’ll see beautiful metallic threads blended with jutes, and plaited hemps mixed with wools and cotton in the range,” says Bree of the range that is accredited by GoodWeave International ensuring no child labour was involved in the manufacturing process.

Whether your lounge room is an odd shape, or you need something oversized, the bespoke option is ideal for when standard rug sizes won’t fit. And to help make the purchasing process a seamless one, the brand also offers a free in-house design service called Room Service. “Room Service involves us working with our client on their design, developing overhead specs and images of the proposed design and we also show what the design will look like in any space. We can also assist more widely with overall room design and colour palettes too,” says Kura.

“Anyone who is working with us will be personally working with Bree or myself. It isn’t cold augmented reality, but rather a tailored, free, individual service, with real conversations where we look at each client’s exact requirements.”

Ethical homewares brands: Amy’s top six!

In the context of Marie Kondo, the unbridled purchasing of cheap, mass-produced homewares seems a little out of step at present and just as people started to think harder about ‘fast’ fashion, many people are turning to more ethical options for their homes. From woven baskets to rugs and cushions, here are our picks of the most stylish yet ethical homewares.

Oon: Working with a team of Nepalese artisans, Sydney based homewares label Oon is committed to fair working conditions for its makers while contributing to the social and economic wellbeing of their communities. From rugs to cushions, baskets and throws, the brand’s products are made from natural, eco-friendly, renewable materials.

Klaylife: We’ve sung the praises of Klaylife before and it’s definitely one of our favourite ethical homewares brands. Initially, the clay beaded chandeliers were crafted exclusively by a community of South African artisans whose lives had been impacted by HIV but over time, as the brand’s popularity has grown, more and more women with differing circumstances have joined the team.

Amigos de Hoy: Gorgeous designs aside, the Amigos de Hoy rug and cushion line-up is also accredited by Good Weave International which gives customers peace of mind that no child labour was used in the making of the range. And by purchasing the brand’s homewares you are supporting programs that educate children while ensuring decent work for adults too.

One Another: With backgrounds in graphic design, photography and fashion, Rick and Annette Carter combined their love of design with artisanal techniques to create their homewares label One Another three years ago. Since launching, the duo have expanded to working with collectives located in India, Nepal, South Africa, Uganda and Central America, helping provide safe, stable employment with fair pay to over 60 artisans.

Oh Happy Home! “Ethical trading has always been at the forefront of my mind. I’m conscious of fast fashion and fast homewares and I always want to do whatever I can to support the maker and the weaver,” says Amy Eaton of the decision to launch her ethical rug label Oh Happy Home in 2017. On-trend designs aside, we love Amy’s commitment to fair trade – something that sets it apart from many of its competitors. The company is partnered with Good Weave International too.

70s glam vibe from Art Hide and Amigos de Hoy sisters

The 70s had it all – from boho chic to retro glam – and its influence on fashion and interiors has transcended generations like few eras, before or since. Australian interiors brands Art Hide and Amigos de Hoy have selected the best elements of the iconic decade and infused them throughout their decadent new homewares collections.

Offering a fresh take on 70s opulence, the newest ethically sourced leather rugs and accessories from Art Hide feature rich jewel tones, reminiscent of the colours seen in the era’s best five-star hotels and with a hint of rock-star glam. New styles Largo and Optico are inspired by bold wallpaper prints of the time in stunning teal and rich forest green hues. And some classic pieces get a modern update, such as the Estrella rug which boasts gold accents injected throughout its herringbone pattern in an ode to 70s glam.

Likewise, Amigos de Hoy brings elevated bohemian glamour to interiors with a new collection of small batch, handmade and traditional artisan crafted pieces. From vintage floral-inspired prints and patterns to Moroccan influences and other 70s references, the collection’s textile pieces deliver on both quality and style.

And of course no 70s-inspired collection would be complete without a scattering of gold. New Tom Tom drums pick up where the brand’s popular Joanie and Stevie tambourines left off, and are a continuation of musical references seen throughout the range.

Immerse yourself in relaxed opulence and evoke classic glamour with the stunning new pieces from these leading Australian interior brands.

Art Hide and Amigos de Hoy are creative collaborations between Australian sisters Kura Perkins and Bree Hay-Hendry. Both brands are inspired by the pair’s world travels and the talented artisans they encounter along the way. They are committed to creating unique homewares that are both fun and fabulous, while retaining a timeless style.

Trending: Our favourite lilac homewares

A rather divisive hue, purple is suddenly all the rage on the interior scene which is not surprising given Pantone named ‘Ultra Violet’ the colour of 2018. And while there are plenty of purple iterations doing the rounds (deep plum, royal purple, mauve and lavender to name a few), it’s lilac that we’re rather taken with.

Kip & Co: The Melbourne brand can always be relied upon to bring the colour. The velvet is particularly lush. Kip & Co Orchid linen frill pillowcase, $49 & Orchid velvet pea cushion, $89.

Adairs Kids Jax side table white & lilac: I love this two-toned bedside for a little girl’s room. $139.99.

Linen House Nimes elderberry linen quilt cover set: Pre-shrunk and stone-washed, this linen bedding has a gorgeous vintage feel. From $179.95.

Taubmans ‘Lavendula’ paint: Julia and Sasha used a gorgeous paint shade on the front door of their most recent renovation (pictured below). It’s a stunning pastel neon (an oxymoron I know!), it really pops agains the brass hardware.

Exclusive: Art Hide and Amigos de Hoy’s Spring ranges

With five little girls between them, sisters Kura Perkins and Bree Hay-Hendry are experts when it comes to designing products that can handle the demands of grubby feet and sticky hands!

Kura, Bree and the kids

The brains behind cowhide rug label Art Hide and homewares brand Amigos de Hoy, their designs aim to be beautiful, high-quality and most importantly sturdy. “We like to design products that we’d have at home,” explains Bree. “Something we would love to wake up to every day and that can also survive inevitable mishaps!”

While Art Hide predominately specialise in high-end, made-to-measure rugs, this Spring they have expanded their ready-made collection to include innovative hide finishes. “The new release sees more intricate techniques employed,” says Kura. “For example, the Sueno rug, which is our take on a traditional Persian rug with decorative tiling, laser burning and hand painting with gold. It’s strikingly beautiful. We’ve also launched our new Alta by Art Hide range, which combines smaller tiles and tessellation’s with pops of colour, delivering on style but saving on price.” How we like the sound of that!

Over at Amigos de Hoy, the offering is hugely diverse; think everything from rugs, cushions and wall decor to tabletop products and fashion. With high-quality, handmade and high impact designs, the ready-made homewares pack a punch when it comes to value. “This Spring we have included a much wider range of rag rugs and an extension on our best-selling dhurrie rugs,” explains Kura. “We believe the unique designs and fun accents offer real value for our customers. In addition we’ve designed more wall decor, such as Wes the Lion and the fabulous new oversized Liberty Tassel. They really add personality to any room.”

Designed from both ends of the country (Kura resides in Perth, while Bree is in Sydney), the sisters manage to make it work thanks to 10-plus calls a day and a very complementary skill set. “Bree is really strong in certain areas that I wouldn’t have a clue about such as the technical skills of putting together detailed designs, renders and graphics,” explains Kura. “Meanwhile I am the marketing person, risk-taker and very business development focused. I have no problems picking up the phone. Bree can be a little shyer in that regard, although she has no problems being direct with me!” Oh, sisters!
