Home renovation features unique kitchen for family of foodies

Located in the inner north Melbourne suburb of Brunswick East, this double-fronted weatherboard house is home to a family of four who engaged Dan Gayfer Design to renovate it in a stylish yet understated way.

“The design brief was predominantly concerned with curating an arrangement of spaces and elements that reflected a distinct family lifestyle. As opposed to packing as much as possible into the space available, importance was placed upon facilitating the congregation of family and friends,” says Dan.

Kitchen and dining
Kitchen and dining

The design focuses on this coming together of people in a comfortable and interactive manner, encouraging both verbal interaction and activities between one another such as games, drawing and cooking. And interestingly, reflecting the idea that big doesn’t always mean better, the family decided against adding a second-story addition. “Refreshingly, the owners were not concerned about spaces that were not relevant to their day-to-day lifestyle such as a TV room, home office, WIR or ensuite; another level simply wasn’t required nor warranted,” says Dan.

Bathroom

A key challenge of the project for Dan, and his colleagues, was ensuring that the renovation wasn’t ‘over-designed’ as the family desired a functional yet simple solution. And although requiring significant refurbishment, the existing front four rooms of the home were retained whilst a fifth room (a bathroom) was also left in its original location. The remaining structure of the building was then removed leaving significant area to play with. “In like situations, one is often inclined to pack everything they can into such a generous area – including a second storey. In response, the addition is single-storied and modest in size with a distinct sloping roof and generous verandah area at the rear; this humble structure embodies the characteristics of mid-century Australian bungalows,” says Dan.

Dining
Dining

Central to the design is the kitchen which is genuinely multi-purpose and acts as a family room, living room and dining counter. It’s a space where family and friends can gather at any time of the day, even outside mealtimes, but the design also reflects the habits of the home’s occupants who are bona fide foodies. “That this family’s lifestyle is so kitchen-centric is no surprise, they are passionate cooks who are happy to cook every meal of the day if time permits,” says Dan.

Kitchen
Kitchen

The kitchen cabinetry was finished in cost-effective laminate – a mix of Laminex ‘Raw Birchply’ and ‘French Cream’ which are integral in giving the home that soft Scandinavian inspired feel. “The faux timber colour, ‘Raw Birchply’, is realistic and is difficult to distinguish from real timber veneer. As such, it could somewhat be viewed as a bargain considering the cost of real timber veneer,” says Dan. In contrast, given their enthusiasm for cooking, the home’s owners splurged on the kitchen’s appliances; a commercial grade rangehood, commercial sized fridge/freezer and heavy-duty double sink with drainer round out the mix.

Kitchen
Kitchen

The kitchen island is an interesting design that promotes conversation – it’s more of a communal table and features a ceramic tile surface, steel edging and custom steel legs. “We are particularly pleased with the outcome for the kitchen, pantry and communal table. The kitchen design reflects not only how the family prepare, cook and serve food but also its tendency to gather and interact during these times.”

New homewares brand Gigi&Tom like jewellery for the home + win!

After a 25-year career as a retail buyer for David Jones and TK Maxx, Sydney’s Abbie Evans thought the time was right for a career pivot – she was ready to leave corporate life behind and work for herself on a business/passion project. “Home is where my heart has always been, but I felt there was a gap in the market. We’re all about dressing your home with those fabulous final touches,” says Abbie who launched the homewares brand Gigi&Tom at the end of 2021.

Gigi+Tom
Gigi&Tom’s pumpkin chair has been a top seller on the site

Promising to bring your space to life with ‘unique home fashion without the designer price tag,’ the Gigi&Tom collection is comprised of an affordable array of fun pieces that are not essentially functional but more the cherry on the top. “I approach the home as I would a great outfit. At the core you have beautiful timeless basics but you freshen that up each season with trend-driven accessories and that’s where we come in,” says Abbie.

Gigi and Tom
The Hellenistic range has been a huge hit with customers

Their target customer is often in their first home (rented or purchased), has a keen eye for fashion but doesn’t know how to bring that sense of style into their home. “Our customer is very aesthetically driven. We launched online because our customer lives on Instagram. Our customers have a really strong sense of their own aesthetic and style but often need help translating that at home,” says Abbie who has designed the range around four key trends making it easy for customers to create their own cohesive interior looks.

Maximalist
The brand’s Maximalist look

The current categories are MaximalistMiami DecoBiophilic and So Cal and you can purchase via category or trend which makes pulling the looks together seamless. Maximalist is all about embracing excess and features lots of jewel tones, layers and luxe textures as well as show stopping furniture while Miami Deco is described as ‘Art Deco with a gelato twist’ and combines beachy chic with retro glam and features a lot of pastel colour pops and bold shapes.

Miami Deco
The Miami Deco look

Biophilic features organic shapes and is very nature inspired whereas So Cal is inspired by Southern Californian cool which is much more laidback, effortless and eclectic with lots of muted colours and woven textures.

With overflowing Pinterest boards, Abbie is constantly researching the latest in interior trends and she also attends major trade fairs like Maison & Objet for inspiration too. The design process starts with an array of mood boards that are created by Abbie and then handed over to her purchasing team who work with manufacturers to design and source products in relatively limited runs. “We don’t buy huge numbers of things because our customers want to be unique and they want things that are different to what their friends have,” says Abbie.

So Cal
The So Cal look
In no surprise to us, the brand has captured colour lovers in a major way.

And with prices starting from just $10, the range is very accessible. “We think everyone should be able to have beautiful things without having to pay a designer price.”

And who are Gigi and Tom anyway? Her fur babies, of course!

Marimekko’s latest 2023 home range sets a new mood

For Summer 2023, Finnish design house Marimekko sets a completely new mood. The collection interprets better living through the lens of optimistic futurism, which is seen in the simplified and mono-material aesthetics of the season.

The new collection plays with dynamics between different shapes and the dialogue between positive and negative space.

The kitchen selection presents new essential items designed for casual, family style dining. Items in the Oiva tableware assortment come in a new brown base, which combines beautifully with white base ceramics from previous seasons. The collection also introduces new additions for tea lovers – brown base Oiva tea mugs and teapot in Seireeni (siren) print by Maja Isola from 1964.

In textiles there’s a new crewel embroidered Seireeni cushion cover, which is made from unbleached cotton linen blend and the quilted Seireeni bedspread made from unbleached cotton and recycled polyester filling.

The season’s colours play with the dialogue between nature’s own shaded and industrially manufactured colours. Natural shades, such as sand, burnt red and sky blue are mixed with artificial tones of spearmint green and joyful yellow. The overall aesthetic sets a hopeful atmosphere that yarns for those perfect summer days ahead.

The season’s prints offer futuristic interpretations of some Marimekko classics. Fresh colourways and simplified prints bring a breath of something new, yet familiar at the same time into the season.

The prints come in monochromatic shades and simplified aesthetics. Minimal icons, such as Tilliskivi (brick) by Armi Ratia, Seireeni (siren) and Unikko (poppy) by Maija Louekari and Pyykki (laundry) by Jenni Tuominen, which both showcase a hand-painted aesthetic.

Greg Natale debuts new lifestyle collection at Maison&Objet Paris

Held biannually in Paris, Maison&Objet is one of the world’s most esteemed interior design trade fairs and this year’s event saw the celebrated Aussie interior designer Greg Natale debut his new collections with a major exhibition titled Fantaisie. Drawing on art, fashion, architecture and music, Greg’s gorgeous new lifestyle range spans tabletop, accessories and objets d’art and is finished in the designer’s signature mix of luxe materials including exotic marble and travertine, ceramic, crystal and brass.

“I was inspired by the incredible intersection of art, fashion and music that emerged from the underground club scenes of the 1970s and 80s. Many of my new ceramics are named after the New Wave superstars of that era,” says Greg Natale.

Paying homage to Blondie frontwoman Deborah Harry, Debbie is a collection of vases, bowls and planters that layer punk rock inspired gold spikes or silver studs over elegant forms while Visage draws on London’s 1980s Blitz Kids and features shades of Bowie, Cocteau, Matisse and Picasso. The stylised silhouettes that zigzag across the collection recall the theatrical makeup worn by Steve Strange, the leader of the New Wave synth-pop group Visage.

The Billy Idol inspired Billy bowl is raised on geometric platforms and features a perforated finish punctuated by gold or silver embellishments. The clean design is also a nod to the work of Swiss architect Mario Botta.

Onda is a series of sculptural accessories carved from jewel-toned marble and a sand and red travertine – the series of elegant bowls and vases feature gentle undulating wave-like profiles. The Jackie vase, Aristotle candle holders (available with Bianco or Nero Marquina marble accents) and Boule bowl are brass pieces inspired by ancient Greek columns and torcheries.

The Blitz bookends reflect Greg’s obsession with 1980’s postmodernism and the underground music scenes of the same era whiel the complementary Blitz candle holders feature stacked geometric shapes in black and clear crystal – they can be flipped up or down to create different looks. Finally, Greg has added his first wineglass to his signature tabletop collection – the stemless design joins the Studio 54-inspired Rubell family of tumblers and highballs.

Make rug shopping enjoyable with the Miss Amara difference

More than just a decorative piece, a well placed rug can warm a room, dampen noise and bring a scheme together. Unfortunately, shopping for a rug can be tedious and intimidating. However, Miss Amara, a design-led Australian-owned rug brand, is modernising the business of rugs with sustainability, exclusive designs and customer experience.

Miss Amara elevates the usually daunting experience, offering free styling services by in-house interior experts, a virtual rug styling tool that uses augmented reality to help customers visualise what a rug will look like in their space and a risk-free returns service.

With collections built on versatility, the Miss Amara rugs are designed by an in-house creative team, showcasing abstract concepts and patterns that are inspired from far flung destinations around the world and timeless design style. From Scandinavian, Tribal, Contemporary, Traditional and Mid-Century, the Miss Amara rugs are made from the highest-grade materials with an extensive range of sizes perfect for finishing lounge and living spaces, bedrooms, kids rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, hallways and outdoors.

Founded in 2014 by husband-and-wife duo Aaron Weller and Alex Tanya Weller, Miss Amara now has more than 70 staff operating online stores across Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand and USA.

Miss Amara founders, Aaron Weller and Alex Tanya Weller

“The inspiration behind Miss Amara came after I had tried and failed to purchase a rug online. After asking family and friends, I realised it was a common occurrence – people would get really inspired, go on Pinterest, find amazing photos and then reality would hit – the experience of actually buying a rug online at the time was terrible.

“Our competitors had thousands of rugs in their ranges, but they were all product photos. There were no inspiring photos of rugs in beautiful spaces, no interior design advice or customer service – just a sea of sameness and endless clicks,” said Alex.

The Miss Amara range includes soft, stain-resistant rugs that can be machine washed, high pile rugs designed to sink your feet into, pet-friendly rugs and sustainable rugs made with recyclable fibres, such as PET (recycled bottles) and recycled leather.

Caesarstone branches out into new porcelain surface range

Caesarstone have unveiled their first ever porcelain collection. Leveraging their 35-year legacy of craftsmanship and innovation – they introduced the first quartz surface in 1987 – they’re now attempting to master the porcelain surface for both interior and exterior use.

Caesarstone Porcelain Striata used in a project by Studio Minosa

The three pillars of this new advanced technology comprise a fortified frame (providing an extremely hard surface that is exceptionally resistant to scratches, pressure and rupture), a high heat structure, that will withstand extremely high temperatures (hot objects can be placed directly on it), and great design in the striking colour schemes, bolder veins, palpable textures, and magnified patterns.

Caesarstone Porcelain Beige Ciment and Sleet used in a design by Studio Minosa.

The company’s design team, together with Li Edelkoort, one of the world’s leading trend forecasters, have created the Light Collection and designs range from a virtual pure white (Whitena) through warm white stone effects to dramatically striated stones (Archetti and Striata), plus a polished concrete finish (Concrita).

Each slab is produced from natural materials, such as clay, feldspar, quartz and natural oxides. The slabs, with a 12mm profile, provide a far greater opportunity for creativity than many other surfaces. Their 1600 x 3200m size means larger, sweeping expanses of joint-free surfaces can be achieved.

Caesarstone Porcelain in Striata

In keeping with Caesarstone’s environmental sustainability commitment, porcelain carries the Greenguard, HPD (Health Product Declaration), LBC (Living Building Challenge) Red List Compliance, CE (European Conformity) and Kosher certificates of approval.

Caesarstone Porcelain can be used both inside and outside the home – its surface is resistant to UV rays as well as chemicals, food spills (like red wine and beetroot) and extreme heat.

Caesarstone Porcelain Beige Ciment and Sleet. Design by Studio Minosa.

There’s a deluxe range for $800 per sqm, supernatural range from $1,050 per sqm and the supernatural ultra range from $1,200 per sqm.

Colourful locker business Mustard Made expands to Europe

After launching just four years ago, the upwards trajectory of homewares start-up Mustard Made continues apace with the brand having officially launched into Europe, its fourth global market. The creation of sisters Becca Stern and Jess Grey, Mustard Made has grown into a multi-million dollar global brand since its inception, and the brand has now sold lockers in over 35 countries, and employs a team of 21 people.

“Initially, Brexit put our European expansion plans on hold as it became too hard to ship from the UK to our European customers, so it’s great to finally be in that market,” says Mustard Made creative director Becca Stern of the brand’s new European website and Slovakian warehouse which allows it to ship from Europe to Europe. “We can now offer our customers much faster, more predictable delivery and great customer service,” says Becca who explains that, so far, their best-selling European region is Germany.

Mustard Made
Mustard Made sisters Becca Stern and Jessica Grey

The Mustard Made business idea emerged after Becca became obsessed with vintage lockers – she would salvage them from the roadside and began customising them with shelving and more. “Our first colours were based off a pink and green vintage locker that I found,” says Becca who launched the brand with six colours and now offers 11 fabulous hues.

Mustard Made
The six Mustard Made locker styles

And while the brand started with just two locker styles, they now offer five different iterations including ‘The Twinny’ which is wardrobe sized. “Going up to that size was a big step for us. The Twinny is great for kids’ rooms as its fits absolutely everything a child needs with space for bedding too. It been our most popular style in the US, perhaps because the houses are bigger,” says Becca who reveals that the brand’s sales have just surpassed $1.5 million dollars in the US market where most orders are shipped to New York, LA and Texas.

The Twinny
‘The Twinny’ in the brand’s newest ‘poppy’ colour way

Not bad for a small, family run business that now employs Becca and Jess’ husbands too. “Having our husbands on board has been profoundly game changing. Jess and I wouldn’t have necessarily been able to take the business this far with just the two us,” says Becca who explains that the sisters juggle the demands of the business while taking care of their children (Becca has three children and Jess has one) alongside their respective partners.

Interestingly, Becca is based here in Australia (Newcastle) and Jess lives in the girls’ hometown of London. “I look after the creative side as well as Australia and New Zealand whereas the European and US markets are managed from the UK,” says Becca.

Mustard Made

‘The Midi’ is another popular style

When launching the business, Becca never imagined its incredible success having incorrectly assumed that most customers would be make a one-time purchase. “One of the most pleasant surprises is that the product is addictive. We thought we wouldn’t have repeat customers, but we were so wrong. When you buy a locker and realise how practical they are, how much you can fit in them and how cool they look, you will buy another one.”

Cadrys celebrates 70 years in the rug business

When Jacques Cadry emigrated from Iran to Australia in 1951, and started his eponymous rug company Cadrys, he wasn’t to know that it would endure for generations. “I don’t think my father would have dreamt that he would be establishing a business that has been held for three generations and is now celebrating its 70thanniversary,” says Cadrys’ managing director Bob Cadry who now runs the business alongside his sons.

Bob Cadry

When Jacques set up the business in 1951 there was little awareness or exposure as to the quality or value of using Persian or oriental rugs in Australian homes. “He really had to pioneer the education and appreciation of hand knotted rugs to an audience that was unexposed. He was a man of great knowledge, integrity and patience and he made a lifelong commitment to educating Australians as to the value of these sorts of textiles,” says Bob.

A Cadrys rug ties the room together in this Mosman home

Over time, the business grew, and Jacques and his sons worked for many years with Australia’s leading department stores including Beard Watson & Co, Anthony Hordern & Sons, Georges and David Jones. The family would travel around the country to different department stores hosting exhibitions and events that would give the rugs context.

“My father developed strong relationships with people that allowed the business to grow. He would be proud that it’s now the oldest family business still trading in the Woollahra municipal council,” says Bob. And contrary to what you may think, while Cadrys rugs can fetch up to $250,000 per piece, the range starts at a very affordable $500. “A lot of people think that we are unaffordable but it’s one of the biggest misconceptions about our brand,” says Bob.

Cadrys’ contemporary rug range is one of its most popular

Originally, the Cadrys offering was comprised of beautiful, hand knotted, one-of-a-kind, rare and collectible rugs from Iran, Afghanistan, Turkey and Morocco. A rug connoisseur, Jacques would source them through his extensive travels to far flung places and they fit into three broad types of weaving – ‘nomadic/tribal,’ ‘village’ and ‘city’ rugs. “The nomadic or tribal rugs are made using materials from their own flocks using portable looms. The designs are often folkloric, talismanic and feature simply symbols and no symmetry,” says Bob.

By contrast, ‘village’ rugs are created by people settled in villages who have access to a wider diversity of dye lots and yarns. “The patterns take on more symmetry though they are still angular and geometric,” says Bob. The ‘city’ style rugs are made on more sophisticated looms and while still hand-knotted, feature more intricate, floral patterns.

Around 20 years ago, the business expanded into the contemporary and custom rug market – a move that was triggered by a shift in taste by architects and designers who wanted specific colour palettes and sizes. “We looked into doing it for a long time but until we were able to produce them with no child labour and quality materials, we didn’t want to sell modern rugs,” says Bob. The Cadrys contemporary range is crafted using more expedient, hand-crafted methods and thus a more affordable price tag. The company also blind label produces a contemporary range for a wholesale company called Colourscope that develops product for retailers including Freedom and MCM house.

And as for many interiors businesses, COVID had a surprisingly positive impact on Cadrys. “People were captive in their homes and wanted to feather their nest and create a feeling of comfort, warmth and security. Rugs do that. They also had more more disposable income that they would have spent travelling,” says Bob. The brand’s busy online store and click and collect business was buttressed by a large stock holding. “We carry a lot of stock and that was helpful because people wanted instant gratification. We found everything to be popular from inexpensive jute rugs to elaborate antique rugs. From the decorative to the collectable,” says Bob.

As for the value in an investment rug, Bob is resolute. “A hand-knotted rug will last for a very long time. Even though the initial outlay may be more than a cheaper rug, they endure and will not end up in landfill. We see that with vintage rugs as we sell ones that are up to 70 years old. Once upon a time, everyone wanted things to look new but today, people have come to admire the well-worn. It creates a less precious feel as well; somewhat more mellow and understated.”

Cadrys is celebrating its 70-year anniversary with two major exhibitions; one at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum and one at the Sydney Jewish Museum.

New ceramics collection from Kip&Co x Robert Gordon

Kip&Co has launched its first ceramics collection in collaboration with the iconic Australian ceramicists Robert Gordon. The connection between the brands spans decades with the Kip&Co team having attended school with the Gordon children; the friendship was forged in a bushy country Victoria schoolyard in the 1990’s and has continued ever since.

“It was an idyllic upbringing in Berwick – surrounded by amazing Aussie bush and a truly creative close-knit community away from the rat race. It was a special, formative period for us all and I think if you look at where we’ve all ended up in our careers you can see the imprint of that way of life. We’ve continued to admire everything the Gordon’s have done and it’s a bloody delight to be working together now,” says Kip&Co’s Kate Heppell.

The Kip&Co x Robert Gordon features lots of fabulous tableware options

The range came about because, like all of us, the Kip&Co crew are rather obsessed with ceramics at the moment. Kate herself has dabbled in making them over the years and says that those experiences have given her serious respect for the craftmanship and skill required in the pursuit.

“But, as is often the way, the bulk of ceramic tableware plays in the safe neutrals space so, naturally we were excited to bring a little bit of our signature playful prints to the category,” says Kate. And when it came to choosing a partner to help the brand realise its dream, Robert Gordon was a natural fit.

The everyday dining collection includes stoneware plates, bowls, jugs and mugs; all of which are emblazoned with a series of maximalist inspired signature Kip&Co prints. “I’m mad on the plates and am very excited to get myself a big set. I can’t wait to use them during long lunches with friends where I can cook up a feast!” says Kate.

The bespoke vase collection is rather special too with only ten of each design available. “Each vase is designed by Kip&Co and hand painted by Kate Gordon, who has been been glazing pottery in her family business for over 30 years. The pouring process alone for these incredible vases takes an entire day and is done by hand at the Robert Gordon studio in Melbourne,” says Kate of the vases that are signed and numbered.

“We’ve continued to admire everything the Gordon’s have done and it’s a bloody delight to be working together now!”

The bedding line-up is rather gorgeous

Standouts from the range include a stunning bed linen offering as well as timber serving ware, throws, cushions and bed linen. “I’m excited to be the first collaborating artist to use Adairs’ glorious 100% linen for the quilts and I think my artwork translates so well on this fabrication. I am so happy with the products – I want all of them in my house,” says Kimmy.

The Geelong based trained graphic designer is known for her love of illustration, art and interiors making the collaboration a very natural one. Kimmy works with illustrations and sketches to create her initial compositions before each of them are redrawn by ‘hand’ using digital tools. The fresh, botanically themed designs certainly do lend themselves to the homewares space.

Echoing Kimmy’s physical artworks, the Adairs x Kimmy Hogan collection is crafted with botanic landscapes and florals – all of which feature a pop of colour layered on a neutral base. “I’m getting better at following my heart rather than overthinking what people might be wanting or expecting. All my artworks hold a special meaning to me; they are created with huge consideration, thought and feeling,” says Kimmy.
