Self-taught Melbourne artist’s talent arose from grief

Proving beauty can arise from adversity, self-taught Melbourne artist Sabina Klein came to her new career after the passing of her beloved father.

“Once we had our two children, I took a break from work, did a short photography course and was studying interior design when my dad passed away and everything changed. It was a few months after that when I started painting, and I haven’t looked back,” says Sabina, who likens her art practice to a form of meditation.

Colourful, contemporary and abstract in style, she works primarily with acrylic paint to create her pieces. “I love the texture and movement that you can achieve with acrylics, the huge amount of colours available and the fact that they dry very quickly allowing me to layer my paintings without waiting too long,” says Sabina who has no official training.

“When I first started painting I did spend many hours online researching basic techniques, methods and mediums, but ultimately I have just let myself organically learn how to paint. I think if you are passionate about something then you should just do it and have a go.”

The artist enjoys working in colour palettes that reflect the seasons, and is inspired by the beachside location of her home. “I find inspiration among nature, flora and the sea. Living near the beach means I spend quite a bit of time there. It’s calming and clears my mind too,” says Sabina, who derives inspiration from social media also.

“I love interior design and styling and am very inspired by the hundreds of images that I am exposed to on social media daily. There is always a new beautiful product or brand popping in, a new styling trend, and it’s easy to be inspired.”
