A yoga and meditation studio so nice, you’ll want to move in!

Gyms and fitness studios are rapidly changing. Gone are the days of dated colour schemes and broken machines. Now, they’re places that promise to revitalise the body and the mind.

W1LL Studio in Sydney’s Surry Hills, is a new yoga and meditation studio that delivers such an experience. Once home to Urban Yoga, the team behind the studio were keen for a rebrand and a redesign. So, with the help of white walls, wall to ceiling linen sheers and an impressive concrete wallpaper by White Mica, the space was transformed.

Designed by Studio 1 Interiors, their brief was to create an open, relaxed reception and lounge area where visitors could have some down time before and after class; a space where they could really feel at home. “I went big on comfort,” says Laura Downie, the founder of Studio 1 Interiors. “Three large armchairs from Uniqwa Furniture steal the show, and once you find yourself sitting in one you’ll find it very difficult to get up! They’re a meditation in their own right!”

Set in a huge light-filled space, the studio’s colour scheme is black and white, with accents of army green and copper. Various seating spaces are softened with the addition of subtle timber tones paired with soft velvet cushions and throws. And of course, no project is complete without greenery, and in this case, lots of it.

“This has absolutely been one of my favourite Studio 1 Interiors projects to date,” explains Laura. “The studio reports that their members and guests all want to move in, so I am deeming that a success!”

Classes are set to music, and there’s a huge screen projecting videos of vivid landscapes, wild animals, sunsets and glittering beaches. And if you’re not in Sydney, they’ve also launched an online yoga and meditation platform.

W1LL is a yoga and meditation studio with a difference. The 1 in W1LL stands for one human. So, every time you practice or purchase a product you are helping a human in need through The Human Kind Project – a non-profit foundation that funds projects in Africa and India.

This Sydney co-working space will have you longing for Monday

Woo! Social Club is a new co-working space in Sydney’s Surry Hills, designed by Studio 1 Interiors, and housed inside an expansive warehouse with an abundance of natural light. “Industrial meets green was the theme created for this space and with a lean start-up budget, and a tight deadline, many pieces were sourced secondhand,” says interior designer and stylist Laura Downie.

“It was a pleasure to work on a project where we could re-use, recycle or repurpose pieces of furniture from around Sydney – all of which I think contributed to the overall finished look of the space. And so much fun was had sourcing them too! It’s always nice to meet the previous owners and hear the history of a piece before bringing it into its new home,” says Laura. Secondhand cork floor tiles were repurposed into a huge cork board wall, old trestle tables became share desks and crates were fashioned into pot plant stands.

Other notable features include a cow hide rug and a secondhand Chesterfield sofa. “These items help zone different areas in what is a large open space,” says Laura, who introduced a pop of colour in the form of a painted feature brand wall too. “The sign writer is booked in but is yet to do the job!” says Laura.

Aside from natural textures, the space also features an abundance of plants – the perfect finishing touch. “All that natural light and timber called for plants and lots of them. I’m not sure I shall ever tire of plants,” says Laura who enjoyed the creation of the space so much that she has taken a desk for herself. “I love the opportunities and friendships that come from local collaborations between people who love what they do.”

Pops of black transform Bondi home for sale

When tasked with transforming a tired rental for sale, interior designer and stylist Laura Downie, of Studio 1 Interiors, used a combination of black accents, soft timbers and fresh linens to create a relaxed, contemporary coastal feel.

“The brief was all about getting the house market-ready for sale following the departure of the rental tenants. While renovated fairly recently, it was looking a little tired and worn in places,” says Laura who referenced the home’s Bondi locale by mounting a beautiful wooden surfboard on the wall. “The surfboard and several framed prints by a local photographer will help sell the lifestyle to the lucky new owners,” says Laura.

Of particular note, is the bold dark paint colour that was applied to the home’s exterior – a move that greatly increased the home’s kerb-side appeal. “Following a colour consultation with the client, we agreed to paint the exterior of the home in a bold but contemporary colour to create impact. Importantly, the colour matched the adjoining neighbours’ house and it really made those cedar slats a feature!” says Laura, whose advice paid off. “The owner had people knocking on the door making offers before the paint was even dry! So many people in the local area commented on it and the real estate agent feels the colour alone will add significant value to the sale price.”

The home was furnished with items from a range of suppliers including many local ones. “Sourcing locally is super important to me and I used several Sydney suppliers for the creation of a couple of bespoke furniture pieces and photography for this project. It created a unique, styled space that embraces the Bondi lifestyle.”

As for the sale of the home – prospective buyers will have to wait a while before snapping it up. “The owner loved the transformation so much that he has decided to live in the home for a while before selling,” says Laura.
