Bright new design talent at next week’s Furnitex

Some of Australia’s boldest and brightest young designers will unveil the furniture of the future when the VIVID (Vibrant Visions in Design) competition returns to FURNITEX next week.

Held from 18-21 July and co-located with DECORATION + DESIGN at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre, VIVID will see almost 50 of our most promising emerging furniture designers compete for awards in Student, Concept, Commercial and Green categories.

Lighting continues to be the most popular focus for submissions in 2013. I’m loving Duncan Meerding’s Cracked Log Lamps (above), embracing the naturally occurring cracks in salvaged refuse logs. And as a fan of both shoes and storage, I also like Marcel Bennington’s self titled Bennington shoe storage solution, made to fit 20 pairs of shoes (where do the rest go though?!).

This year VIVID celebrate its 11th year, continuing to provide a coveted industry platform for new design talent from across the country. Curator Scott Lewis says: “To date VIVID has assisted over 400 designers with more than 700 products to kickstart their careers. The quality of product submissions for 2013 is world class and truly demonstrates the current high level of Australian design talent.”
