Dalani claims to be the first, the biggest and with the best online magazine

Yesterday we talked about the three new Australian homewares sales sites offering you massive discounts on great brands. First up we spoke to Temple & Webster and today we share our interview with Dalani. Tomorrow you can read all about the third option, Home Culture.

What’s the story behind you setting up this business in Australia?

Dalani was founded by Delia Fischer, former editor of Germany’s Elle Decoration – the world’s best-selling interiors magazine. Delia’s objective was to create a sophisticated, inspirational shopping environment with a carefully curated selection of products. The result was Dalani, which has evolved into a portal to inspirational shopping across many continents. Dalani Australia is bringing this concept of enjoyable event shopping to the Australian market, with a website and magazine completely tailored to the Australian homemaker’s unique tastes. Our mission here is to make decorating a joyful experience.

How would you sum up your site and its offering?

Dalani offers a members-only shopping club and inspirational home and living magazine. We offer high-end homewares at 35-70% off. We sell everything from established, premium labels, to up-and-coming boutique brands. There is no limit to the diversity of products we offer – the only prerequisites are style, quality and taste. We offer everything from linen and tableware, to furniture, gourmet foods and designer baby shoes. Our online magazine provides inspiration and guidance on design and decoration. It has all the benefits of a print magazine and more, with interactive content, interviews and behind-the-scenes exclusives.

There are now three similar players in the market. Why are you the best/different?

In comparison to our competitors, we have a far greater volume of sales and products to choose from, we have an experienced team with a proven track record, we have staff dedicated to excellent customer service, and we have a beautiful, free online magazine for our members.

One major point of difference is that we were the first to open shop on Australian shores. Our first day live was Oct 24, with many months of planning and preparation beforehand. Dalani has been tried and tested overseas, and proven to be vastly popular with consumers – we are a professional operation meaning there are no hiccups for consumers.

As we are backed by a large, innovative company, we have strong buying power. Unlike other websites, we have many different sales running concurrently. While today (9 December 2011) Temple & Webster currently has four sales live and Home Culture three, we have 12 (a number set to grow). This means a wider range of options for consumers. With a constant flow of varied sales, our members can rely on us as their premium home and lifestyle resource.

Our magazine is unique. While other platforms offer blogs and forums, what we’re doing takes it to the next level; bringing the shopping environment together with an inspiring, quality publication. It’s not just an online store. We have an experienced editorial team, and a high-profile creative director. While the other platforms upload one or two posts per week, we have a minimum of five. We offer expert advice, book reviews, designer tips and exclusive features for our readers. We have a steady flow of expert contributors on board with Dalani, from designers, to authors, stylists and celebrity chefs. We are delivering high quality, creative content.

We also offer customers fantastic after-sales service, including beautiful packaging and easy returns. For Dalani, it’s about making shopping easy, fun and inspiring, saving consumers time, energy and money.

Do you think there is space in the market for three websites like this?

Absolutely. The fact that three new sites have launched just reinforces the fact that there was a hole in the Australian market. Dalani’s success overseas proves that event shopping is the way of the future, and Australia is latching on fast. While online shopping has become the norm for fashion and electronics, the format of a shopping club is brand new to the lifestyle arena. It’s the next logical step in retail, as we move away from the traditional experience of shopping, towards something more diverse, practical and convenient.

Besides, there’s no harm in healthy competition. Each website will evolve differently.

Do you think this is something the Australian consumer has been waiting for?

It is! Australian consumers have grown tired of trawling through hundreds, and often thousands of products, on traditional shopping websites. While sites like Asos have been a revolution for retail, the ‘shopping club’ takes the work out of shopping. Dalani is clean, simple and easy to navigate, with products that have been specially curated for our target market. With print media trending down and magazine readerships dwindling, the online magazine is welcome news to consumers. By pairing the two platforms together we are working in synergy with the Australian consumer’s changing needs.

What are your plans for the site in the next 6 months?

In six months’ time we will have more market-leading brands on board. Our magazine will be a well established style guide for consumers. We will have regular exclusives with unique designers, chefs, and other dominant personalities from the lifestyle world. We are also looking to increase member interactivity and make the whole experience a lot of fun for Dalani members.

Can anyone help me get hold of anyone @ Dalani, I have sent numerous emails, after not receiving my order…weeks have gone by, and nothing…have paid for goods that have not arrived? cannot get a response from any of them?
D

Formerly known as Dalani Home. I paid $150 for what I thought was towel sets and bath mat sets. Received two toilet cleaners…. Initially I was chasing them to see where my order was at and didn’t receive a response until I put a complaint through paypal.

I found their number on the paypal contact but it was DISCONNECTED!

Paypal would not refund me the moneys as it was out of the 45 day period which I thus responded that that is ridiculous. You pay for the goods up front, the sale ends two weeks later and they say you’ll get the goods 3 weeks after the sale. What hope do you have to get a refund when the actual timing from paying to receiving goods is in excess of 45 days.

Proceeded to ask DALANI where my goods were and still no response. Finally I received a post ticket and picked up a small box with the friggin toilet cleaners. Contacted Dalani… no response…. then they have the audacity to say I have signed for a parcel and would not receive a refund. I am bombarding them with emails saying I have the box and will send back once my correct order is received. Still won’t ring me!!! So frustrating. I have been an online shopper for years and this is my first bad experience. You suck Dalani/Home whatever you are called.

Hi,

Yes, I have had the exact same experience of being ripped off by Dalani aka “The Home”. Made quite an expensive purchase and only received one part of the product (useless without the other parts). I have sent them two emails regarding this problem and have received no reply. I will never be buying from them again! I too, have done a lot of on-line shopping over the years and have never experience a seller behaving in this fashion. It’s theft!

Dear Jen,
you might need to warn your readers about buying from the Dalani website. There are many unhappy customers http://www.productreview.com.au/p/dalani.html and I am another, am experiencing exactly the same problems, no delivery, (I ordered in July) no email replies, no phone number to contact them. Makes me wonder why they are changing their website name??? It’s sad that there are companies out there who don’t care. Readers please take care! Regards.

Hi Jen,
Sorry, but these people can not be contacted, new ownership or not. This company is a COMPLETE scam. I have just reported them for fraud to my credit card company and the CRS. I purchased a rather expensive Christmas present in November and still have not received it, They have been avoiding my emails, and being evasive buying time by telling me that the courier has tried to deliver it several times but my apartment building has no door. BS. I assured them that my apartment building certainly has a door and is not some magical mystery building. Since then they have said they sent it out, and still nothing, that was a month ago. Now a week ago I asked for a full refund and they have not replied. I hope they reply now that they see that they have been reported. Even if they don’t reply, hopefully now they will be shut down.

Its no good. You can only email then and no one ever replies. I found another email for an employee [email protected] but she doesnt respond either. I purchased on 5th Septemeber and still havent receieved my order 2 months later. I ordered Murchison Hume products. I contacted Murchison Hume direct and they got me the email for the Lexi Mills but she wont respond to me, only to the lady (their client) from Murchison Hume. I will be contacting Murchison Hume again to advise them that their customer still wont return my email. Maybe if we all let the companies know to not deal with Dalani/The Home then they will have no one let to work with.

i to placed an order on 18th september of significant cost. no product received no response to my emails, this organisation is a complete disgrace. not happy at all and no one should recommend them

I have been waiting for a delivery from this company for months. Every way I try to keep in touch with them is blocked and just goes back to their sales page. BUYER BEWARE. Don’t buy from this company.

My sister and I have had similar problems. I previously ordered a number of things and their service was terrific (albeit their delivery times were always terrible – 3 weeks after a sale closes) and my last August order was never filled and despite calls and emails I haven’t had a refund. They claim it’s PayPal’s fault because once something’s been processed on a credit card, they can’t reverse it. What rubbish. Try [email protected] or phone 1300 650 549 – I’ve been dealing with someone called Samantha.

Hi Avril,
They can. Even a long time after the transaction date. Contact your credit cards fraud department. I have had to do this once in the past and Paypal put the refund through immediately once the bank contacted them.

Dalani/The Home are a scam and should not be promoted anywhere. I purchased products from them to the value of $380 and I never received anything!!! It took 6 months of emails to finally get them to give me a refund. The money you might save with The Home is not worth the heartache of dealing with such terrible customer service. There a so many people in the same situation, I am definitely not an isolated case. I wish I had read reviews before I shopped there. STAY AWAY FROM THIS WEBSITE!!

Well it appears that you have opened a hornets nest regarding Dalani. or The Home as they now call themselves. I am a frustrated customer who paid $150.00 in November 2012. It is now February and I have not received the goods or any information to enlighten me. I will be contacting The Department of Fair Trading to request their assistance in this matter without delay.

I am another victim in the UK. I purchased from Dalani.co.uk aka The Home last year, and it took 4 months to get delivered, and the product was damaged (no refund!) I sent Emails but they never replied to me.

Back then, they had a facebook page (now removed… no wonder!). There were tons of frustrating customers complaints… I also put the complaints in the wall, then finally they contacted me via Facebook!
They explained that the items were shipped outside of the UK, so it took time to deliver. I asked them why Dalani/ The Home didn’t put this information on their website because If I knew it beforehand, I wouldn’t be frustrated. Especially the product I ordered was rarely discounted. But, they just ignore me.

I wish I had read reviews before I placed an order. And, i really hope there are no more victims like us. The company should be banned! I cannot imagine they still exist!!!!

I would also like to add my experience to all of the others, I purchased something at the beginning of November, the INCORRECT item was received at the beginning of December & despite me wasting a lot of the month attempting to chase it up I still have this HUGE box sitting here & NOT my original order & although pick up was promised AGAIN a week ago, it wasnt picked up of course & I cannot get a response from The Home at all …

ALSO, I have just spoken to PayPal & even though we are unable to get our money back if it is after 45 days, now that they are aware of how many people have been ripped-off by thehome.com.au, if enough of us contact Paypal Protection Services they will look into it, possibly ban them & we may be able to get our money back, PLEASE CONTACT PAYPAL if you used it.
