Bathroom store specialising in Australian made opens in Sydney

If there’s been a silver lining to the pandemic, it’s the increased focus on Australian made products. Suffice to say, the appetite for locally made product has never been greater and it’s what inspired the launch of Studio xox – a boutique bathroom ware store located in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs that has an online presence too.

After a few years sourcing products from overseas, Studio xox founder Jonathan Tsoupis decided to look local when curating a line-up of bathroom products to sell through the studio and through the brand’s online store.

Recognising that manufacturing in Australia has some of the toughest conditions – wages, policies and materials – the business is hoping to shine some light on this by working exclusively with Australian suppliers, giving them a platform and a community focussing on quality craftsmanship, exclusivity and sustainability.

Leading the Australian made product line-up is Nood Co who is celebrated for its bright, bold and adventurous colour profiles. The store has a large display of Nood Co wares giving customers the opportunity to see the colours firsthand as well as feel the product.

Faucet Strommen is another locally made product stocked at the studio – its solar-powered factory in rural Victoria produces lead-free eco brass and is a leader in tapware. From utilising new materials like lead free eco™ brass to building superior products, Faucet Strommen is an industry leader for Australian tap ware according to Studio xox.

Melbourne’s Concrete Collective specialises in customisable glass-fibre reinforced concrete and its range is available at the store. Concrete Collective has perfected the formula for highly durable yet lightweight concrete benchtops and the range includes concrete pedestals, integrated vanity tops and wall hung vanities. It’s not available anywhere else outside the studio.

Lindsey Wherrett Ceramics are available too – handcrafted in Tasmania by Lindsey herself, each piece is highly sought after.

As for the studio itself, it was launched out of a desire to give customers an inspiring, immersive experience. Designed by Mia Lake Interiors, the gorgeous Sydney studio space is light and bright and inspired by the neutral and coastal influences of the Mediterranean.

To really understand a product, Studio xox feels that customers need to have the opportunity to experience it in-situ, where they can look, touch, and feel the product in its entirety. The range is inspired by a deep passion for what Australia can produce.

The Aussie company taking colourful concrete basins to the world

“The concept with Nood Co was to create a contemporary product brand with duality. To take a masculine building material and present it as feminine as possible,” says Matt Di Costa, co-director of the stylish Perth-based concrete basin company Nood Co. Prior to launching the brand, Matt studied architecture, had a career as a polished plasterer and was a contestant on The Block too. “Given my background, concrete and design was a logical business,” he says.

And while many former Blockheads rely on the TV association when forging careers after the show, it’s something Matt has avoided with the brand that he founded with friend Chris Walker – preferring instead to let the product speak for itself. “We are very honoured to have been a part of The Block, and all they have done for us. I am, however, a believer in letting the product take centre stage,” says Matt.

Launching in 2017, with a furniture and basin range, Nood Co has since simplified its offering which now includes 65 basins that range from surface mount to wall hung, pedestal and freestanding designs. But what truly sets the brand apart is its use of colour – the Nood Co designs are available in 14 on-trend shades including blush pink, peach, mint, teal and more.

“When creating the range, the goal was to create pieces that complemented other pieces in the bathroom space so they had to be restrained and carefully coloured. Less is more kind of vibes,” says Matt of the brand’s minimal, contemporary aesthetic.

Good looks aside, Nood Co delivers on the quality front too – the brand’s concrete composition is strong and features a solid colouring system which results in basins that are 100% coloured throughout. “Nood Co concrete has admixtures in the composition that give it its natural water tolerance. This means that we only seal with a penetrative sealer in a very minimal way. The resulting effect is a basin that never has to be resealed, and will never delaminate, which is real breakthrough for concrete and makes us unique to all others.”

Nood Co also boasts solid eco-credentials – its concrete harbours zero chemicals, the Nood tint is chemical-free and the basins are waxed with 100% organic wax. Interestingly, the basins take 96% less embodied energy to make than their ceramic counterparts. “Our concrete is VOC-free also and we offer recycled packaging and donate to Carbon Neutral Australia to offset our carbon footprint,” says Matt.

The brand’s latest basin colour, lilac, was chosen by its design community

It’s certainly a winning formula given that the brand has countless overseas stockists, its products have sold in 42 countries and its site is visited annually by 112 countries. “We have more products in the works and a big showing at Denfair Sydney later in the year. We also have some other surprises coming, particularly for the design community. I can’t say too much but expect us to keep pushing the boundaries and to keep it fun!”

Bathroom ideas: The artist behind Merwe’s unique wares

Given that Australian bathroom brand Merwe’s distinctive bronze basins have an almost sculptural quality, it didn’t surprise me to find out that the company founder is a fine artist. And while Jacques van der Merwe’s artistic repertoire includes painting, drawing, sculpture and photography, today we’re focusing on how he came to create his gorgeous bathroom wares, out of a rainforest on Queensland’s Tamborine Mountain.

Originally from South Africa, Jacques emigrated to Australia 12 years ago, with his wife Madeleen. With 21 years’ experience in the bathroom ware design industry, manufacturing for the international market, the couple were stood in good stead to launch Merwe in 2017.

“After so long in the industry, we found that the market was looking for something different. Our aim is to produce products that are comfortable, practical and original in the bathroom environment,” says Jacques. And with designs crafted out of solid surface, bronze, copper, zinc and brass, the brand’s unique material palette certainly sets them apart.

Merwe works with several hand-picked manufacturers across the world but creates all of its bronze and zinc basins in Queensland. “They are made by hand and personally patinated here at the Merwe studio,” says Jacques of the items which are among the brand’s most popular.

And unique aesthetics aside, Merwe has an environmentally sustainable focus too; it uses 95 percent recycled bronze to create its bronze basins. “The copper is salvaged primarily from old cables and piping,” says Jacques.

From metal basins that are hand-finished by a professional artist, to solid surface bathtubs designed with ergonomics in mind, the range is is filled with thoughtful, interesting details. “For instance, we found that you cannot comfortably recline in a bathtub with a sharp edge as you need extra pillows to make yourself comfortable,” says Jacques who, in response, created a design with a curve to support the neck.

“Ergonomics and aesthetics are intrinsically tied together when developing iconic bathroom ware, ensuring longevity in quality and design.”

Australian bathroom trends: March 2018 edition

While it only seems like yesterday that we brought you our monthly bathroom wrap, it’s time to share our latest wet area finds yet again. From a rustic basin to a high-tech toilet, there’s plenty of fabulous new bathroom finds.

IB Rubinetterie Kelly Hoppen Zero 3 wall spout square: Featuring the celebrated American designer’s signature clean lines, this timeless chrome mixer that would complement just about any bathroom. The range features basin and shower fittings too. $990.

Merwe Arroyo Basin: A fabulous rustic basin alternative, this beauty has been pre-patinated to give it a weathered, one of a kind finish. The patina (or tarnish) process can take decades so this is perfect for those that cannot wait. As a bonus, the patina gets better with age. $2499.

Candana sink

Roca In-Wash Inspira smart toilet: For a technical product, this toilet looks very slick. You may have come across toilets like these in Japan (think all sorts of whizz bangery that you didn’t know you needed) and now you can get one for yourself at the relatively affordable price of $3500. My favourite feature is the in-built night light.

Beaumont Tiles Vulcanic Ash tile: It’s the large format (747mm x 747mm) and industrial aesthetic that impressed us with this rectified porcelain tile. Ideal for a large bathroom the finish is inspired by volcanic rust and rock.

Goccia basin mixer with spout: Inspired by the fluid shapes of water (the spout looks like a water droplet), this matte black mixer has gorgeous slim lines.
