Family business thrives as natural stone’s more popular than ever

When Sandeep Rawal left India for Australia in 1995, he intended to study economics at university, but the universe had different plans. Alongside his studies he set up a company in Sydney called SNB Stone through which he started importing natural stone from India (a country renowned for the beauty of its granites).

Slabs of beautiful natural stone in the Sydney warehouse

Eventually Sandeep was so busy with the company that he began importing stone from Italy, Brazil, Greece and Turkey and gave up on his studies to pursue the business full time. This year SNB Stone celebrates an incredible 27 years in business.

“With the help of a great team and family support, SNB Stone is now renowned in the market as pioneers in offering unique and quality natural stone and engineered porcelain slabs to architects, interior designers, stonemasons, builders, developers and homeowners,” says Sandeep’s wife Amrita Rawal who is a director at SNB Stone as well as a qualified interior designer.

She is involved in the day to day running of the business alongside Sandeep, and while it started off in Sydney, it now has showrooms in Brisbane and Melbourne too. Much to their delight, their two sons have started to get involved in the business alongside their university studies, bringing a fresh perspective.

Long prized for its natural beauty, natural stone is timeless, durable and comes without the health concerns of its man-made counterparts. “Overall though, we’re finding stone is becoming more and more popular because people are attracted to its natural and long lasting qualities,” says Amrita who cites Carrara, Calacatta, Super White Dolomite and Chambord Grey as among the most popular stone choices.

Many of Australia’s top interior designers and architects choose their stone for impressive projects, meaning Sandeep and Amrita are often lucky enough to get to see the finished product in magazine spreads!

At $400-to-$2,000 per square metre, natural stone is obviously not within everyone’s reach which is why SNB Stone also sells a range of large porcelain slabs. “Strong and hard wearing, porcelain can look like natural stone but doesn’t carry the price tag. Porcelain slabs are a good option for people that want the look of marble with an affordable price range of $300 to $550 per square metre,” says Sandeep.

And after almost 30 years in business, Sandeep is keen to stress how integral their employees have been to the business’ success. “Some of our staff have been with us for 15 years now and many for more than 10. All of them have contributed so much.”

Exclusive interview: Andrew Winter’s bathroom makeovers

As the host of Foxtel’s Love it or List It Australia and Selling Houses Australia, it’s safe to say that Andrew Winter is a bona fide residential property expert. So, when the serial renovator reached out with pictures of his new bathrooms, inside his new house, we were keen to take a look and get some design advice at the same time.

Andrew loves looking at the sky from his bath while avoiding having to have frosted glass
Master en suite details

Andrew opted for a luxe freestanding bath in the master ensuite

“We wanted to achieve a classic but creative feel and tried to avoid the usual with a nod to our coastal location. Classic because too high fashion has very little longevity. And we tried to be creative and avoid the usual – whilst we are all influenced by what we see and like, pure plagiarism is dull,” says Andrew. The bathrooms, created with products sourced from Reece, are located inside Andrew’s new three-level coastal Queensland home.

Andrew in his new powder room

Aesthetics aside, Andrew put a lot of thought into space planning the four ensuites and powder room that he shares with his wife and two of his three daughters. “In any decent sized bathroom, the toilet should always be discreetly positioned or hidden,” says Andrew who made sure to do that in the home’s master ensuite. He also positioned the bathroom windows in a way that allows for privacy without frosting or screening. “It’s lovely to be able to soak in the bath and look at the clouds or sky if possible.

Andrew loves a bit of mood lighting in a bathroom

“And never forget lighting – we have bathrooms that are practically lit yet create mood,” he says.

Ensuite 1
Ensuite one

After many seasons on Selling Houses Australia, Andrew has seen his fair share of bathroom disasters with the worst offenders hailing from the 60s, 70s and 80s. “Oh my God, you haven’t got enough tape to record how many hideous bathrooms I’ve seen!” says Andrew who does concede that you do occasionally find a gem from those eras. “We had a house in this past season of Selling Houses with a very old-school wash basin and floor tiles that were this sort of soft grey and soft pink from the 1950s, like a little mosaic. We all said, ‘you can’t change those’ because they were beautiful,” says Andrew.

Ensuite 2
Ensuite two

When it comes to bathroom renovations, Andrew has lots of practical tips. “Bathrooms don’t date that quickly but what does tend to date are the bits that go around them, which is usually the tapware, the style of any cabinetry, and the tiles.”

For instance, it’s worth choosing taps that you truly like because you can change them easily when an update is required. By contrast, when it comes to tiles, Andrew recommends sticking to neutrals, rather than controversial or strong coloured tiles, simply because they are much harder to change. “If you go for fairly neutral tiling, then you can just add some candles and lovely coloured towels in colours of the moment.”

Ensuite three
Ensuite three

For those looking to renovate a tired bathroom for sale, without replacing it, here are Andrew’s top tips:

  • Taps can look worn, so just a tapware and a vanity swap could update a bathroom.
  • Even the most shocking tiles can look fantastic if professionally sprayed in white, a soft grey or a nice neutral colour. You could do that inexpensively and it would have a massive impact.
  • Change the light fittings to something modern – subtle downlights or a track light.
  • If the windows are ugly, go with a plantation shutter, louvred white blind or roller blind. They will cover up an ugly window and still let the light in.
  • Add nice towels and plants. Suddenly, it’ll feel a lot nicer and you won’t have spent a lot of money.

Bathroom store specialising in Australian made opens in Sydney

If there’s been a silver lining to the pandemic, it’s the increased focus on Australian made products. Suffice to say, the appetite for locally made product has never been greater and it’s what inspired the launch of Studio xox – a boutique bathroom ware store located in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs that has an online presence too.

studio xox
Studio xox

After a few years sourcing products from overseas, Studio xox founder Jonathan Tsoupis decided to look local when curating a line-up of bathroom products to sell through the studio and through the brand’s online store.

Recognising that manufacturing in Australia has some of the toughest conditions – wages, policies and materials – the business is hoping to shine some light on this by working exclusively with Australian suppliers, giving them a platform and a community focussing on quality craftsmanship, exclusivity and sustainability.

Studio xox
The store has a unique selection of bathroom wares

Leading the Australian made product line-up is Nood Co who is celebrated for its bright, bold and adventurous colour profiles. The store has a large display of Nood Co wares giving customers the opportunity to see the colours firsthand as well as feel the product.

Faucet Strommen is another locally made product stocked at the studio – its solar-powered factory in rural Victoria produces lead-free eco brass and is a leader in tapware. From utilising new materials like lead free eco™ brass to building superior products, Faucet Strommen is an industry leader for Australian tap ware according to Studio xox.

Melbourne’s Concrete Collective specialises in customisable glass-fibre reinforced concrete and its range is available at the store. Concrete Collective has perfected the formula for highly durable yet lightweight concrete benchtops and the range includes concrete pedestals, integrated vanity tops and wall hung vanities. It’s not available anywhere else outside the studio.

Lindsey Wherrett Ceramics are available too – handcrafted in Tasmania by Lindsey herself, each piece is highly sought after.

As for the studio itself, it was launched out of a desire to give customers an inspiring, immersive experience. Designed by Mia Lake Interiors, the gorgeous Sydney studio space is light and bright and inspired by the neutral and coastal influences of the Mediterranean.

To really understand a product, Studio xox feels that customers need to have the opportunity to experience it in-situ, where they can look, touch, and feel the product in its entirety. The range is inspired by a deep passion for what Australia can produce.

CIBO Design for Bunnings: Located on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, CIBO Design has been making affordable bathroom wares for Bunnings for the past seven years and the latest collection offers a rather stylish look.

The new ‘Freshwater’ range is inspired by a coastal aesthetic with the vanities featuring v-groove doors, ceramic tops and oversized round timber handles in black, white or oak. The vanity is available in wall hung and full height versions in 600, 900 and 1200mm wide.

The new ‘Mornington’ wall hung vanity is available in 900 or 1200mm and in either white or oak veneer cabinetry with half round black or white handles. Each vanity has a quartz stone top and ceramic counter-top basin in a choice of four on-trend colours including white, matt pale pink, matte grey and white and matte black and white.

Novas: One of Australia’s leading creators of design-led architectural products, Novas has just released its Frame range of designed-to-match tapware, door hardware and bathroom accessories. Taking the guess work out of finding fittings, fixtures and door hardware that match, the stylish range is available in chrome, matte black, satin nickel, gun metal, satin gold and satin bronze.

“Unity amongst fittings and fixtures like tap ware and door handles can give a home a truly premium feel, and Novas has taken the hassle out of this with its Frame collection,” says Melbourne interior stylist and Novas ambassador Aimee Tarulli of Archer Interiors.

The design takes inspiration from the elegance of a classic bag clasp and the mechanical detail of a timepiece and suits an array of interiors. “The flexibility of the Novas Frame collection’s hero bezel design allows it to look at home in limitless compositions, whether it be art deco, industrial, minimalist or modern,” says Novas Creative Director Nicholas Johnston, who designed the range.

Methven: Methven has added to the Maku range of taps and mixers, with the new Maku2 series featuring a handset, hand shower and rail shower designed to create a cohesive look across basins, baths and shower units. There are three new shower designs created in chrome with graphite finishes.

The new Maku MK2 handset features Satinjet technology that uses twin-jet technology to create optimum water droplet size and pressure, with over 300,000 droplets per second. In addition, the handset is easily screwed into existing hoses, avoiding plumbing fees and time spent waiting for an appointment.

Beaumont Tiles: Spacious Slabs is the new range of large-scale tiles from Beaumont Tiles and at 1200mm x 2700mm they sure are colossal. In fact, they form part of a select group of tiles known as ‘slab tiles’ due to their size. Made from high-quality 6mm thick glazed porcelain, the range comes in six stone designs, with matte or polished finishes. There’s Pietra Silver, Arabscato, Volkas, Pulpis, Statuario and Calcutta.

“Spacious Slabs are amongst the best priced in the market and a great option for renovators who are looking to take a luxe for less approach to their reno, and want to jump into the slab tile look,” says Christie Wood, Beaumont Tiles’ strategic designer.

The Block 2021 room reveals: master ensuite

This week on The Block, they revealed the master en suites. Read on for the scoring and to see the rooms.

FIRST: Ronnie & Georgia

Score: 29/30 (after using their gnome point)
Spent: $22,000

The Block 2021 House 1 Room 5 - Ronnie & Georgia

Welcome back to what Shaynna calls Ronnie and Georgia’s trademark sophistication – a calming and beautiful colour palette in a room that takes advantage of the sweeping ceilings and Velux skylights to create a large, but comfortable master ensuite that’s perfectly matched to the room it serves. From the Zuster cabinetry with cleverly separated basins to the perfectly placed plain white wall breaking up the tiled areas – and saving costs – it is a room Neale believes has massive buyer appeal.

LAST: Mark & Mitch

Score: 22/30
Spent: $26,790

The Block 2021 House 2 Room 5 - Mitch & Mark

In a rare mis-step from the planning kings, Mitch and Mark’s bathroom left the judges a little confused this week, with Darren pointing out the space between the basins and the shower screen was too tight, the screen itself too large. It was, he said: “a planning disaster!”. But not all was lost, with Shaynna loving the colour palette, the tile choice and styling that makes it “a jewellery box of a room”. And Neale agreed, saying there was much to love… if only the layout could be fixed.

FOURTH: Tanya & Vito

Score: 22.5/30
Spent: $17,458

The Block 2021 House 3 Room 5 - Tanya & Vito

From brown tiles to a black toilet, sensible planning and functionality throughout, Tanya and Vito’s bathroom grabbed Darren from the second he entered. And on the styling front, Shaynna agreed, with the bold colour choices stamping a unique style on the room that shows just how different the team’s aesthetic will be. But will that be too polarising come auction day, Neale wondered. Is it deco? 70s? Or something blending multiple influences? Will there be enough people who share the couple’s love of colour, retro chic and multiple hero pieces? Time will tell!

SECOND: Josh & Luke

Score: 28.5/30
Spent: $41,980

The Block 2021 House 4 Room 5 - Josh & Luke

Walking through the wardrobe to a hidden oasis, the judges were immediately impressed by Josh and Luke’s styling choices in a room that marries their master bedroom to a secluded garden creating something the judges were definitely not expecting – a master wing. “We’ve been transported from a wardrobe to something much better than Narnia!” Darren said as he took in the room Shaynna described as real estate gold! And at the centre of it all was the huge outdoor bathtub, a choice all agreed was controversial (especially with Melbourne winters) but managed to work so well.

THIRD: Kirsty & Jesse

Score: 26/30
Spent: $28,045

The Block 2021 House 5 Room 5 - Kirsty & Jesse

From the fresh indigo blue and gold colour choices to the refined tile choices, concrete basins set in a veined marble-look benchtop and Kirsty and Jesse’s Hamptons style blended with a touch of Colonial, this is a room, Shaynna says, that shows the team has definitely grown up. Some fixture placements gave the judges concern – the bath was always going to get wet, Shaynna warned – but overall this is, Neale says: “a damn good bathroom that feels fresh, glamorous – and is really fulfilling the brief!”

How to design your dream bathroom with less complications

Although the bathroom may be the smallest room in our house, it’s an important room that serves both a practical and an emotional function. It’s the place where we put ourselves together to face the day, and for many, it’s where we go to escape the world and relax as well.

However, it is also one of the more complicated rooms to create or remodel, but with the latest tips from leading design experts, the process to create your dream bathroom will be smoother and easier.

“Everyone has different needs, budgets, values, and personal styles they want reflected in their bathroom,” Andy Grigor, head of design and Innovation at Methven. “When choosing bathroom fixtures and fittings, we would like you to consider three simple rules, being feeling, function and form.”

Feeling

Methven’s Waipori Basin Mixer

“The feeling rule is considering how you want your finished bathroom to feel,” says Andy. “Relaxing, fresh and welcoming? Modern and minimalist, or with some Hamptons detailed charm? And how this will fit in with the rest of your home?”

The basin mixer is typically the hero of your tapware collection. Once you are happy with this choice, select your shower and bathroom accessories with complementary shapes to complete your bathroom and create a cohesive look.

Function

“You need to get specific on how your bathroom will function,” says Andy. “While this includes practicalities such as a bath or no bath, it’s also about the different functions your bathroom could perform during the course of a day – such as a place to move through quickly on your way to work in the morning, or the ability to become a relaxing zone when you take a soak in the tub.”

Form

Form is deciding on the materials and textures you like to create the style you are after. While sharp, geometric forms have ruled interior spaces in the past couple of years, design trends are now shifting toward soft curves, and rounded edges. This trend inspires the feeling of comfort and encompasses a sense of welcome.

“Bring your personal style to play within the functional framework you’ve developed,” says Andy.

To create a high-end bathroom look, choose classic styles and a simple colour pallet, particularly with tiles and elements which are more complex and therefore costly to change. Spend your time on getting the layout and functionality of your bathroom right, supported by quality fittings you can rely on for years.

Methven products are available through Bunnings Warehouse, Reece and plumbing stores and showrooms nationwide.

Peel & stick tiles: An affordable kitchen & bathroom reno solution

When Yiwen Ling bought her home recently, she loathed the kitchen’s green tiles, but her budget didn’t stretch to a complete renovation. And after exploring many reno options including spraying the tiles or retiling, Yiwen stumbled across the world of peel and stick 3D tiles and from there her business, Stick on Luxury, was born.

“The green splashback was a complete eyesore but having emptied our bank accounts buying the house, we had no more budget to do up the kitchen. A re-tile quote was $2,000 and I found that spray painting was going to cost thousands too.” She ended up revamping the space with peel and stick tiles for less than $300!

Heat-resistant and waterproof, the Stick on Luxury range is available in several formats – subway, hexagon, mosaic, herringbone, fish scale, penny round and a Moroccan lantern inspired design. “At the moment we’re simply importing them, but we’re slowly beginning to manufacture our own designs,” says Yiwen who explains that the business will be rolling out a kit kat design very soon too.

The product can be adhered to wooden surfaces, painted and smooth walls, glass, acrylic panelling, stainless steel, ceramic, aluminium and plastic. The range is also easy to install (all you need to do is clean the surface and stick the product on), making it perfect for DIY-ers. “The great thing is that anyone can do it themselves without paying for labour. I’m amazed at how easy they are to use,” says Yiwen.

Designer toilet brushes and bins the new must-haves for a stylish bathroom

While Australia’s homewares scene has continued to dramatically improve over the years, when it comes to bathrooms it can still be a little tricky to find stylish wares to put the icing on the cake. Oliver Thom, the exclusive bathroom accessory store launched in 2019, has well and truly filled that gap, which is probably why it’s been such a big success.

Oliver Thom's Woollahra bathroom emporium
Oliver Thom’s Sydney bathroom emporium

“Over the years of working in bathroom design, I noticed a real lack of high-end, well produced bathroom accessories that were easily accessible in Australia. We would fit out really beautiful luxe bathrooms and then struggle to style them and give them the finishing touches they deserved,” explains co-founder Kaety Thompson. She spent many years as a design consultant and buyer at high end bathroomware store Candana, before starting Oliver Thom with its owner Marc Reed.

Oliver Thom co-founders Marc Reed and Kaety Thompson

After combining Marc’s business savvy with Kaety’s interior design prowess, the pair decided on a business name that is both personal and clever. “Oliver is Marc’s middle name, and Thom is the beginning of my surname Thompson. Simple but effective, we thought Oliver Thom sounded like a stylish, design enthusiast and imagined a whole persona to fit the store,” says Kaety of the business that started as an online store in 2019, before becoming a physical one in Sydney’s Woollahra a year later.

The bricks and mortar store was developed in response to feedback from clients who really wanted to see the products in real life before specifying them. Opening the store proved to be the right move as it instantly improved brand exposure and boosted sales. “It’s probably a 60/40 percent split with in-store sales being the more profitable part of the business,” says Kaety.

Oliver Thom store

The store is located close to Candana which works well – customers who have just finished a renovation or new bathroom can pop down to the store and get everything they need style it. “Our shop corner on busy Edgecliff Road has been extremely beneficial in terms of exposure, so even if customers aren’t able to find parking (which is often the case in Sydney!) they can jump online and view the full range.”

As for which items are the most requested, predictably they are the ones that are usually the ugliest – toilet brushes and bins! “They are absolutely necessary in the bathroom, but they often end up being the least thought about, which doesn’t make sense if you’re designing a beautiful bathroom and then finish it off with ugly bins and toilet brushes,” says Kaety.

The Nova pedal bin by Zone Denmark is another popular style

She admits that finding stylish alternatives for those items hasn’t always been easy. Oliver Thom’s curation of bins are not only pleasing to look at but they won’t rust or look aged in a few years’ time.

Lotus toilet brush
The Mette Dimmer toilet range includes a rather attractive brush

Also popular is the Frama Apothecary range of soaps and lotions that come out of Copenhagen. “We’re one of only a handful of Australian retailers of this product, and they are becoming a design icon,” says Kaety.

The cult Frama range

Unsurprisingly, their own range of across-the-bath caddies are another top seller. Designed in collaboration with the San Francisco artist Tina Frey, they are hand cast and finished in black or white resin. They’re certainly the most stylish bath caddies we’ve seen. In addition, the Baina Josephine hand towels sell out every time they are restocked. “The simple check design and feel of organic cotton will always ensure they are a coveted item,” says Kaety.

And as with many furniture and homewares retailers, Oliver Thom has seen a boon in sales since the onset of COVID-19 in March 2020. “Just like I think the rest of the building and design industry, we were lucky that our customers were able to spend money that they would normally reserve for travel and hospitality on their homes, and making them beautiful.”

Kaety’s favourite three products under $100

Tradition beech wood bath brush by Andrée Jardin’s, $60: “Our Andrée Jardin brushes are made in France by third generation artisans. The entire range of brushes is under $100, but if I had to choose a favourite it would be the Tradition bath brush in Beech wood,” says Kaety.

The Raconteur Hamilton Island candle, $75: “It reminds me of holidaying on Whitehaven and the aromas of Australia’s natural beauty,” says Kaety.

Baina Josephine hand towel, $45: “These hand towels sell out every time we re-stock them, but the simple check design and feel of organic cotton will always ensure they are a coveted item,” says Kaety.

Earthy luxe: Concrete Nation’s stunning coloured basins and baths

Equal parts earthy and stylish, the Concrete Nation range of bespoke concrete baths and basins are some of the most beautiful we’ve come across. The creation of husband and wife team Jason and Kate Lett, who design and manufacture the range in Queensland’s Burleigh Heads, the brand is a favourite of upscale interior designers and architects both here and abroad. It’s not hard to see why!

Concrete Nation
The Pod collection

“The focus of our brand has always been to showcase the natural beauty of concrete. We don’t want perfection, but rather a perfectly imperfect finish that can only be achieved with handmade products. Our handcrafted products tell a story and are more than just a sink or a bath but rather a work of art,” says Kate, who hails from America and has a background in fashion design.

Kate met her New Zealander husband Jason when he was playing rugby and working for a builder in the US. In 2013, after the birth of their first daughter, the pair moved to Australia and combined talents to launch Concrete Nation together.

Concrete Nation
The gorgeous Valencia bath has put the brand in the international spotlight.

Eschewing trends, the brand believes the more earthy tones are the perfect complement to a natural product such as concrete. “Rather than creating products in the latest trendy designs or colours, our goal is to be innovative, push the boundaries and create designs that are unexpected,” says Kate who, with her fashion background, understands the unique ways that colour, texture and design intersect.

And while Kate brings design acumen to the business, it’s Jason that delivers on the technical front, having completed a course in fibreglass reinforced concrete when living in America. “He was so taken with the endless possibilities of concrete and began to dabble in it in the US,” says Kate of the time before launching the business.

Super strong and highly durable, the range is constructed from the aforementioned fibreglass reinforced concrete making it half the weight of pure concrete and 10 times stronger due to the addition of glass.

The Concrete Nation palette was developed through using different percentages of oxides that are mixed the whole way through the concrete, ensuring the colour runs through the whole product and isn’t just painted on top.

The company has solid sustainability credentials too with a commitment to offering ethical, high quality products that are safe for the consumer and the environment. “We use zero VOC concrete composition as well as zero VOC natural oxides. Almost all of our materials are sourced from within Australia, reducing transport emissions too,” says Kate.  Last year, the company made the decision to switch to renewable energy with its manufacturing facility and headquarters now operating solely on solar power. It also has a recycled filtration system that reuses wastewater and reduces waste.

Concrete Nation
The Tropez basin in snow white

In the beginning, the company offered custom bench tops, vanities and dining tables for local residential and commercial projects, but the duo always wanted to expand.

“We soon realised if we wanted to grow the business beyond the Gold Coast, we needed to create products that were easier to transport. We recognised that there was a void in the market for unique bathroom products. At the time, there was absolutely nothing like it in the market and the response was overwhelmingly positive,” says Kate.

Since opening, Concrete Nation has expanded its product offering and colour range and now has stockists and distributors all around the globe. “We are currently working with some of the best interior designers and architects for upscale residential, commercial, multi-residential, hospitality and retail projects. In a disposable society, our products are designed to stand the test of time.”

Bathroom ideas: The artist behind Merwe’s unique wares

Given that Australian bathroom brand Merwe’s distinctive bronze basins have an almost sculptural quality, it didn’t surprise me to find out that the company founder is a fine artist. And while Jacques van der Merwe’s artistic repertoire includes painting, drawing, sculpture and photography, today we’re focusing on how he came to create his gorgeous bathroom wares, out of a rainforest on Queensland’s Tamborine Mountain.

Originally from South Africa, Jacques emigrated to Australia 12 years ago, with his wife Madeleen. With 21 years’ experience in the bathroom ware design industry, manufacturing for the international market, the couple were stood in good stead to launch Merwe in 2017.

“After so long in the industry, we found that the market was looking for something different. Our aim is to produce products that are comfortable, practical and original in the bathroom environment,” says Jacques. And with designs crafted out of solid surface, bronze, copper, zinc and brass, the brand’s unique material palette certainly sets them apart.

Merwe works with several hand-picked manufacturers across the world but creates all of its bronze and zinc basins in Queensland. “They are made by hand and personally patinated here at the Merwe studio,” says Jacques of the items which are among the brand’s most popular.

And unique aesthetics aside, Merwe has an environmentally sustainable focus too; it uses 95 percent recycled bronze to create its bronze basins. “The copper is salvaged primarily from old cables and piping,” says Jacques.

From metal basins that are hand-finished by a professional artist, to solid surface bathtubs designed with ergonomics in mind, the range is is filled with thoughtful, interesting details. “For instance, we found that you cannot comfortably recline in a bathtub with a sharp edge as you need extra pillows to make yourself comfortable,” says Jacques who, in response, created a design with a curve to support the neck.

“Ergonomics and aesthetics are intrinsically tied together when developing iconic bathroom ware, ensuring longevity in quality and design.”

Victoria + Albert Baths’ 2020 bathroom predictions: From bold colours to the feature basin making a comeback, this year is shaping up to be an interesting one for bathrooms, if the latest trend predictions from Victoria + Albert Baths’ are anything to go by.

“As homeowners start to feel bolder and braver in their designs, we anticipate a rise in colour finishes, with a particular interest in colours that evoke emotion. In saying this, the colour scheme doesn’t have to be dark and moody with black and monochrome tones, which is commonly seen in bathroom interiors. This year’s colour trends are rumoured to be muted blue and green tones, which are perfect for calming bathroom environments,” says Victoria + Albert Baths’ brand manager, Emma Joyce.

“Basins are underrated within bathroom interiors, with many designers overlooking the impact a beautiful basin can have on a bathroom’s finish. We predict the interest in basins and vanities will rise this year, particularly with the assortment of options available to create a unique atmosphere,” says Emma.

Toilet tech latest: What’s new in loos?

While toilets aren’t the most exciting of topics, the latest technological advances have certainly piqued our interest. From washing functions to automatic seats, lights, remote controls and hygiene glazes, there’s seemingly more to the humble toilet than ever! And accordingly, rather than being an afterthought, when designing a bathroom, they’re increasingly front and centre.

“The toilet is a functional part of the bathroom and possibly not always considered a design object like some tapware or basins are, however with improved technology as well as different finishes available, it is more of a consideration than ever in the overall design of the space,” says Rene London of bathroom retailer Bathe.

Sensowash

And while ‘intelligent’ toilets are nothing new in places like Japan, Australia is finally embracing them – in large part due to their new slim-line designs. “Anyone who has travelled to Japan has seen or used an ‘electronic bidet toilet’ before and possibly considered them to be a novelty. But these types of toilets are gaining huge popularity around the world and in Australia,” says Rene.

Often called an ‘intelligent’ toilet, these designs typically have integrated remote-controlled washing technology for the ultimate in hygiene. And one of the latest innovations in the ‘shower-toilet’ sphere is Duravit’s Sensowash range; particularly the new Starck F model.

“The toilet functions are controlled by a slim remote control, or you can use the app on your phone. The seat technology is housed within the ceramic, which makes this model particularly innovative – these types of seats have previously been more cumbersome and in some brands, are quite bulky and large. This toilet could be mistaken for a standard wall hung toilet,” says Rene.

The model also features three washing functions, a heated and automatically opening seat, warm air dryer, night light and odour extraction.

Washing technology isn’t the only improvement on the germ front – innovative new hygiene glazes have upped the cleanliness factor in modern toilets too. Baked into the ceramic during firing, some 90-99 per cent of bacteria are killed within 24 hours on some models of toilet.

And as for trends, matte finishes (including black and white), are one to watch. “Also, rimless flushing is not so new, but it’s becoming the norm in toilets, creating an effective flush and great hygiene effects too.”

Bathroom ideas: How do you get a luxe look for less?

Our bathrooms play a vital role in our daily lives; they help invigorate us in the morning, and wind us down in the evening. This space should never be neglected and has so much more potential than just functioning as a practical place. What’s more, through small changes, it can be transformed into a refuge of relaxation and recuperation that doesn’t have to result in extortionate bills.

This bathroom was created by Catherine Heraghty of The Stables
This gorgeous bathroom was created by Catherine Heraghty of The Stables

In 2018, the average cost of a major bathroom renovation in Australia was $17, 522, however this cost is due to varying factors and can fluctuate depending on your circumstances and needs. While a renovated bathroom can add nearly $20,000 to the value of your home, a few cosmetic changes and DIY jobs are really all it takes to get the luxe bathroom you’ve been dreaming of. Today, Methven’s group head of design and innovation, Andy Grigor, explains how.

Update your shower and tapware
Showers and tapware can define the theme of your bathroom. Combined with functionality, choosing a shower and tapware that looks stunning will transform your bathroom into a room you can’t wait to use.

Firstly, gather options together, take your time and do your research. Create a mood board or a scrapbook of design ideas and products. Then go and find those (or similar) products on display so you can feel the quality and get a sense of how the product feels as you use it.

“By simply replacing your tapware and shower you will transform the feeling of your bathroom. Remove the old and replace with matte black, for instance, for a modern look,” says Andy.

A lick of paint never hurt anyone
If the budget is tight, there are some very simple aesthetic changes you can make to immediately upgrade your bathroom. Painting your tiles may sound strange but it is a very cost effective and simple way to completely and quickly refresh your bathroom. There are many tile paints available if you like to DIY, or you can hire a professional to do it for you.

“Opt for light colours such as tonal aqua to make the room feel bright or more spacious offering a serene and refreshing ambience, or select a deep colour such as emerald green for a dramatic and modern finish that encourages nurture and regeneration,” says Andy.

The Painted Hive used tile paint to overhaul this bathroom in an incredible way
This bathroom was overhauled for just $2000 by The Painted Hive and tile paint was key

Replace your vanity
Removing your old vanity and replacing it with a new one will instantly make your bathroom feel like it’s had a full renovation. A wall mounted floating vanity will also open up the feel of a small bathroom space by adding more floor area.

However, if your budget doesn’t allow for a purchase of a new vanity, then look for ways to repurpose your old one or even an existing piece of furniture. Keep in mind the size of the area and the plumbing needs.

Sometimes the simplest tasks are the most rewarding
“You can renew your bathroom and give a sense of a complete upgrade, just by re-grouting your tiles. If your tiles are still in good condition, they may simply need to be re-grouted in order to make them seem brand new again and brighten your bathroom, as discolouration can show the bathroom’s age,” says Andy.

Add a spa-like touch
Decluttering your bathroom and adding storage where possible is key. Once you have a fresh canvas, adding little accessories, a few baskets for towels, fancy soaps and decorative accents is a great way to add your personal touch. Incorporate plants and create your own indoor oasis, which will all contribute to the overall look of your ‘home spa’.

Australian bathroom trends: November 2019 edition

While we’re hurtling towards the end of the year, the bathroom scene continues to turn out plenty of interesting innovations. From 2020 tile trend predictions to a sleek integrated vanity, and plant-dyed hypo-allergenic towels, these are our top bathroom picks for November.

2020 tile trend predictions via Beaumont Tiles: Fresh from a visit to the world’s largest tile and ceramics trade show (Cersaie Trade Fair in Bologna, Italy), the team at Beaumont Tiles have identified key tile trends for 2020 – green, terrazzo, large slabs and natural stone, and Moroccan Zellige.

Green tiles

“The environment and the world around us are at the forefront of many people’s minds, and this in a design sense has translated into the colours and materials predicted to trend as we migrate into the new year,” says Christie Wood, Beaumont Tiles strategic designer.

Terrazzo
The terrazzo trend shows no signs of slowing down

“Zellige style tiles are the embodiment of this movement, celebrating their organic imperfections as opposed to covering them. They have tone-on-tone colour variation and structured glossy surfaces, all emulating their Moroccan birthplace and are a must watch for next year,” says Christie.

Roger Seller Catalano integrated vanities: Floor space is maximised with this space-saving, wall-mounted, integrated vanity range. The vanities feature ample storage, soft-close drawers and come in a choice of natural oak or walnut veneers. From $1499.
