Simple and chic: New marble and oak tables from Totem Road

Designed to last a lifetime, sustainable furniture brand Totem Road’s new range of white oak and Carrara marble tables have a timeless simplicity and more than a passing nod to Scandinavian and mid-century design principles. We think they’d complement just about any space which is no mean feat.

“I love Carrara for its pale grey veins which bring a rich and fluid humanity to this fiercely dense material. We chose marble because we thought it would make a great accent to the white oak. We also chose it for its pure white neutrality that blends well the natural fibres, animal hides, natural crystals and organic shapes,” says Totem Road designer Elaine Bellew.

Yet again marble proves the perfect complement to concrete, brass & wood.

Available in dining, coffee and side table sizes, the range is designed in Australia and manufactured in Vietnam and there is a clear intention behind its gorgeous, clean lines. “When we talk about visual sustainability, we are really talking about more than just the materiality of the product and the how long it lasts, we are talking about the overall design, the way it looks,” says Elaine who prides herself on creating enduring pieces – in both a design and durability sense.

Totem Road co-founder is at pains to point out the difference between ‘fast furniture’ (akin to ‘fast fashion’) and his ethically produced, high-quality wares. “Whilst the ticket price for this quality product might look high at first glance, both our marble topped dining tables, coffee table and side tables represent excellent value on a cost-per-wear or years-of-use basis,” says Totem Road co-founder Don Garvan.

11952823_816714855116346_633705104697295771_o“We love how our marble pieces allow us to romanticise the simplest things we use in our homes,” said Leonie. “Inspired by the female form; the curves, power and strength yet delicateness and sexiness of a woman is ultimately what sets off our vibe.”

Urban Couture’s stunning marble mirror and shelves

Expanding on their existing Carrara marble range, Urban Couture’s new collection is stylish, practical and has me wanting everything!

Featuring new rectangular and square marble trays, a steel and marble floor mirror (which I need, not want!), a black stained American Ash shelf and their favourite piece yet – the Carrara marble shelf; the range is all about giving customers design difference, a unique way of living and a complete sense of style.

To date our Carrara marble range has been focused mainly on furniture pieces — namely coffee and side tables, so we wanted to expand on this to incorporate some home decor accessories,” explains co-founder Thomas Towhidi. “Our favourites are the floor mirror, which was designed by my partner Katriarna as we found it hard to source and locate any mirrors we liked locally. And to be completely honest, we desperately wanted one for our own home! Also I can’t go passed the marble shelf. It is distinctive in that we’ve moved away from the whole plywood theme, as we believe it’s been a bit overdone in the Australian retail industry.”

As always, their inspirations are European based, in particular the Scandinavian and Italian design aesthetics and their affinity for all things natural, whether it be marble or timber. “We use only the highest quality of Carrara Italian marble quarried at the city of Carrara, the northernmost tip of modern-day Tuscany, Italy. Carrara marble is like a finger print. Being a natural stone there are no two pieces exactly the same, giving the customer an individual piece of invested design.”

The marble trays are available now, with the mirror and shelves available for pre-order (for October delivery).

Stone tile coasters: we’ve found the coolest ones online

Having worked at one of Australia’s largest sports betting agencies, it’s safe to say Leonie Psillis’ life took a huge change of pace when she had her daughter Elle, two and a half years ago. Becoming a stay at home mum, Leonie was on the hunt for a project to launch herself into, and so her business Stone Inspired, was born.

In the words of Leonie, Stone Inspired is, “basically artwork on marble.” Taking an image she sources from anywhere around the world, she uses a self-taught technique to transfer it onto the stone. The end result is art perfect for the table (be it decorative or as coasters) or the wall as tiles. Her latest addition are hexagonal tiles/coasters made of carrara marble.

Handcrafted in Sydney using the highest quality marble sourced predominantly from Italy, they are finished with Australian made eco-friendly products. “There are many mass-produced ceramic tiles on the market and my mission is to educate clients on the vast differences between my product and these substitutes. There are zero nasties in the materials I use and I’m very proud of that.”

As well as making individual marble tiles/coasters, Leonie is very excited about her latest project: marble murals. “I really haven’t seen them in the market before. I use rustic natural tumbled marble and the beauty in the stone’s texture really makes the finished piece a standout. You can run your hand along the surface of the artwork and feel every crack and crescent, giving it a truly authentic look and feel. I’m also working on murals with smoother marble for a more streamlined effect.”

Her latest large stone artwork saw Leonie partner with Australian photographer Louisa Seton, whose stunning African Turkana Girl photograph graces the finished piece (above). For 2015, Leonie hopes to partner with more artists and designers like Louisa, as well as get some more stockists, expand her portfolio and the big dream… hold her own exhibition.
