How to: Choose a kitchen splash back

There was a time when there were very few options when it came to kitchen splash backs. Thankfully we’re no longer living in that era and if anything, we’re absolutely spoilt with fabulous choice. From mirror, to stone, tiles, glass or even window, there are so many great splash back options that have the power to propel your kitchen from drab to fab.

Mirror

A mirrored splash back can look fabulous and it doesn’t have to be super shiny like bathroom mirrors. In fact, there are some lovely smoky grey ones that have a subtler, mirrored finish. But given that mirror doesn’t add texture, colour of movement to a space you have to have a good reason to use it.

One excellent justification is if you want to highlight a beautiful view. Your kitchen splash back may be opposite a beautiful garden or amazing ocean view, or something else that you want to reflect. Another reason to use a mirror is to maximise a feeling of space. If your kitchen is on the diminutive side, a mirrored splash back can really open it up.

Just remember to be mindful of checking Australian standards with respect to the type of mirror you need to install as not all mirror works behind a hot plate – some will crack and shatter when they get hot.

Window

Using a window as a splash back is such a beautiful idea as it’s such an amazing way of connecting the inside of our homes with nature. Obviously this only works if you have the back side of your kitchen running along an external wall of your home and you must make sure there’s something to look at. If, for instance, the view is simply that of a Colorbond fence, you might want to reconsider installing a window If you are set on it though you could mount external art or an artificial or real green wall onto the fence – both options will make it much more attractive to look at.

But, like mirror, it’s really important that you check the Australian standards when it comes to glass – it can also shatter when it overheats.

Stone

People often discount stone as a splash back option because they think it will be too expensive. But not only are there some very affordable stone varieties on the market, the installation cost is less than tiles as there is no grouting required and the process doesn’t take as long.

Furthermore, if you’ve selected a stone bench top you will have to purchase an entire slab meaning may have a leftover piece. Slab dimensions vary, but generally they are 2400mm x 1200mm which means you might be able to get your splash back out of just one slab, making it a really affordable option.

Aside from being super easy to clean and heat-proof, stone splash backs have no grout lines and thus provide a beautiful, seamless look.

Coloured glass

My least favourite splash back option, while there are some great colour choices I think it is a rather clinical look. But there are a couple of exceptions in my mind – a glass splash back can look fabulous inside an uber modern home and I don’t mind black glass in the right spot.

Tiles

My favourite splash back option, tiles can bring so much texture and life into a kitchen. From the lovely movement and texture of a little mosaic tile to a timber-look variant, large format tiles or an on-trend patterned option, tiles can be amazing in a kitchen.

There are some things to consider though. If you want a really clean-edged finish you need to select a rectified tile for a nice, square edge and talk to your tiler about having really thin, almost imperceptible, grout lines. Some tiles are so well made and straight that you can forget the traditional grout joint entirely and simply have the tiles butt up against one another with a very thin line of sealant between then. This is a more specialised option though and will depend on your tiles and tiler’s experience.

And if you’re concerned about grout and the absorption of food stains from cooking, there are some amazing grouts around that are minimally porous too.

Laminate

If you have a really tight budget and you don’t have a cooktop in front of your splash back (and thus no heat issues) you could consider an amazing laminate or board product – from timber-look to metallics, there are some ultra-cool finishes out there.

7 common replicas and what the real deal will cost you

Replicas are absolutely everywhere, and when you’re under the impression that the real thing costs an arm and a leg… well I don’t exactly blame some of you for going with the cheap option. However, sometimes the real deal isn’t actually that exy and when they last a lifetime (versus a year or two) and support the actual mastermind who created the design, it may just be worth investing. Below we fill you in on how much seven commonly copied pieces of furniture actually cost. And some are less than you’d think!

At $220, the familiar Componibili 3 Round (front left in the image below) available through Space Furniture, is surprisingly affordable. Coming in many colours and configurations, the 30-year-old design from Kartell is flexible, functional and practical. Slotting into any home setting, be it the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen or living room, it is also displayed at The Museum of Modern Art in New York and at the George Pompidou Centre in Paris.

Componibili 3 Round

Originally designed for Carl Hansen & Son in 1949, the CH24 Wishbone Chair (Jen’s favourite) is a light, sculptural dining chair that is also suitable for relaxed sitting away from the table. The seat is hand-woven in paper cord (unbleached/natural or black) and the frame is available in a variety of hardwoods and coloured finishes. Prices start at $1,100 per chair, and can be purchased through Cult Design.

The Adnet Mirror by Gubi is the epitome of luxury. Designed in the ’50s, the distinctive, round leather mirror with equestrian-inspired detailing comes in three sizes and three strap colours (black, olive or brown). Available from Cult Design, prices start at $1,020.

Originally designed for exterior use in French bistros, the Tolix Stool 65cm is perfect for breakfast bars (though we’re a little sick of seeing replicas everywhere on account of how mass produced and cheap they’ve become). With a rigid stackable design, lending itself to a variety of applications, it comes in a large range of finishes and colours. Available through Thonet, prices start at $390. And the real deal is so much nicer and less disposable!

A classic piece of mid-century furniture, the Eames Moulded Plastic Side Chair with Eiffel Base DSR ($615) from Living Edge is as stylish and useful today as when it was designed in 1950. The organic shape and sophisticated lines of the chair, with the streamlined Eiffel Tower wire base, work anywhere in the home. The shell seat has a high, flexible back, a deep seat pocket and a waterfall front edge, so you can sit comfortably even for extended periods. A multitude of colour choices can be paired with a chrome, black or white base. Beware the cheap replicas whose screws fall out. Many are actually quite dangerous!

eames-dsr-lifestyle

Widely considered one of the most significant designs of the 20th century, the Eames Classic Lounge & Ottoman also comes with a significant price tag, $7,990 to be exact! That said, this is a substantial piece of furniture. In continuous production since its introduction in 1956, this timeless design is constructed to last lifetimes. Entirely hand-assembled, the seat is balanced on a five-star, die-cast aluminum base with adjustable stainless steel glides for uneven floors. It is available in a range of finishes from Living Edge.

Noguchi himself described his Coffee Table as his best furniture design, no doubt because it is extremely reminiscent of his bronze and marble sculptures of the time. Designed for Vitra, it has a glass tabletop that rests on two identical wooden elements placed at right angles. Available in three finishes from Space Furniture, prices start at $3,470.

Urban Couture’s stunning marble mirror and shelves

Expanding on their existing Carrara marble range, Urban Couture’s new collection is stylish, practical and has me wanting everything!

marble-shelves+manly-styled

Featuring new rectangular and square marble trays, a steel and marble floor mirror (which I need, not want!), a black stained American Ash shelf and their favourite piece yet – the Carrara marble shelf; the range is all about giving customers design difference, a unique way of living and a complete sense of style.

marble-mirror-styled

To date our Carrara marble range has been focused mainly on furniture pieces — namely coffee and side tables, so we wanted to expand on this to incorporate some home decor accessories,” explains co-founder Thomas Towhidi. “Our favourites are the floor mirror, which was designed by my partner Katriarna as we found it hard to source and locate any mirrors we liked locally. And to be completely honest, we desperately wanted one for our own home! Also I can’t go passed the marble shelf. It is distinctive in that we’ve moved away from the whole plywood theme, as we believe it’s been a bit overdone in the Australian retail industry.”

marble-shelves-styled

As always, their inspirations are European based, in particular the Scandinavian and Italian design aesthetics and their affinity for all things natural, whether it be marble or timber. “We use only the highest quality of Carrara Italian marble quarried at the city of Carrara, the northernmost tip of modern-day Tuscany, Italy. Carrara marble is like a finger print. Being a natural stone there are no two pieces exactly the same, giving the customer an individual piece of invested design.”

The marble trays are available now, with the mirror and shelves available for pre-order (for October delivery).

Hallway decorating ideas with Alisa and Lysandra

Reader Natasha says: “I’d like Alisa and Lysandra to help me with a design question. We have a narrow hallway that is accessed as soon as you walk into the house. It’s only just a little wider than a standard single front door entrance and goes for about six metres. We painted it Dulux White on White and we have regular hardwood floorboards. What can we do to decorate the space so it doesn’t just look like a long white hallway?”

hallway alisa lsysandra

Lysandra says: “This hallway is screaming for some pieces of artwork. This is a great way to inject some colour into this rather lifeless space. If you can find a console (around 300mm wide) then that is going to help break up the length of your hallway. Above the console (which you’d obviously place on the lefthand side) you could place a mirror. This will make the space feel wider and will also reflect any natural light, giving the feeling of space.”
