Our guide to greeting cards you’ll selfishly want to keep

I could count on one hand how many greeting cards I’ve actually liked. For me, they normally go one of two ways: cringe or all cheese! But with many boutique Aussie brands popping up, it seems finally there are some beautiful alternatives on offer. So, have an anniversary, birthday or just a day where you want to say: ‘I’ve been thinking of you’ coming up? If yes, check out the list below.

PennedBlack: Providing unique and stylish paper goods from a boutique studio in Brisbane, their signature look is hand-drawn prints and foiled typography. Simple but oh so sweet.

Olivia York: With a passion for all things Australia, Melbourne-based illustrator Olivia York creates whimsical watercolours worthy of framing. On a side note, she also specialises in pet portraits… just saying!

As a designer and travel blogger, Emma Kate Codrington is the woman behind the brand, who designed her latest collection for people like herself, those who wander freely, adventure wildly and love with abandon. “Wild Hearts is for dream seekers and adventurers, and I wanted to capture the spirit of anyone who has wanderlust in their bones,” explains Emma. “After two years living and loving in London, I wanted to create something that reflects who I am today. A little more knowing, a little bit stronger and a lot more travelled.”

Beautiful illustrations for the Interiors Addict x The Envy Edit collaboration

A collection of daily drawings of all sorts of must haves, The Envy Edit is the brainchild of Sydney creative, Angelique Sloss.

[contextly_sidebar id=”3iN6EFUD8HiVSBBdTLtfpZJ1abtm0jI1″]With a background in the fashion industry, Angelique had always had a strong affinity for drawing, however she had never seen it as something more than a hobby, until now. “Designing, illustrating and trend forecasting have always been apart of my 5-9. I love to keep busy and make sure my creative juices keep flowing. So with my latest venture I wanted to do something different. I wanted to combine my love of drawing and my Instagram addiction.” And so, The Envy Edit was born!

Illustrating items that reflect what is currently trending, as well as some of her all-time favourite pieces, Angelique draws anything and everything from homewares to fashion to food. And as a special treat, she has created three Interiors Addict x The Envy Edit illustrations. We absolutely love them!

Showcasing all her artworks on her Instagram feed, @theenvyedit, she also sells a selection of them as prints and greeting cards via her online boutique. Creating the illustrations with either markers, watercolours or pencils, no illustration has the same design process. “Each project is different. I usually start by analysing the purpose of the artwork then go from there. Majority of the time I use images saved in my phone as reference for what I am drawing. Having that by my side, I begin sketching up the image with pencil. I then choose what materials are best for the artwork.”

No longer strictly working in fashion, when Angelique’s not busy drawing she’s freelancing for a variety of brands. “Being in the creative world I juggle a few different roles. I am a freelancer for a few brands — working on their marketing and design projects — and I also lecture at one of the design colleges in Sydney: Karl Von Busse Institute of Design.”

Quirky cards and bold prints from new brand, Pinata Press

While some people wait tables or work in the local mall through university, student Jono Foo owns Piñata Press, an e-commerce site that sells quirky cards and art prints.

rect3062-1

A self-taught illustrator and graphic designer (he studies law and economics at university!) he decided to start Pinata Press at the beginning of this year. “From a young age, I have had a passion for illustration and design but hadn’t had a chance to really go back to it since I finished high school in 2009,” explains Jono. “I decided to turn my passion into something real and very much enjoy what I do.”

Loving that he is able to do something creative and escape from the books, Jono’s biggest sellers are his handmade greetings cards, which are stocked through his website and in stores in Adelaide and Queensland. “I began designing handmade greetings cards because whenever I looked for cards in the past, I’d always find it difficult to get something that wasn’t generic and boring. From these experiences, I figured I’d have a go at designing my own line of quirky cards which drew from my own sense of humour.”

rect3062-48

All original, handmade designs printed in his hometown of Adelaide, they are perfect for anyone who hates clichéd birthday or soppy Valentine’s Day cards. His art prints also warrant attention, which thanks to their bold colours and geometric shapes will instantly brighten up any room. Professionally printed on 200gsm paper, they come unframed in standard A4 and A3 sizes and can easily fit into standard frames from IKEA or department stores.
