Ken Done stars in one of two fabulous new Aussie bedding ranges

With summer on its way, two fabulous new bedding ranges have landed, both inspired by Australia’s unique and beautiful landscape. And while the ranges feature very different aesthetics, they both celebrate the beauty of this great land.

Kip&Co x Ken Done

This collaboration is such a perfect alignment that I’m surprised it hasn’t happened before now. With their love of bright colours and clashing prints, it’s fitting to see Kip&Co collaborate with Australian icon Ken Done for their latest collection. “I think the shared stuff between us, and Kip&Co, is the love of colour, the love of decoration, the love sometimes of putting two kinds of patterns together to make something else,” says Ken Done of the collaboration.

With Ken’s art epitomising Australia and its luminous, vibrant colours as well as bright sunlight and ocean vistas, the bedding range showcases his signature enthusiasm for colour. Some of our most iconic subject matter features including the Great Barrier Reef, yachts on Sydney Harbour, sunbathers on the beach and plenty of flora and fauna. For many of us, the collection is a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

“When we grew up in the 80s, Ken’s art leapt off the walls and into our day-to-day lives, providing an incandescent backdrop to our most nostalgic, treasured childhood memories. This was the time when a Ken Done coaster set, t-shirt, or print became as ubiquitous with the Aussie home as the hills hoists that punctuated our back yards. We soaked it all in. His unabashed optimism and signature enthusiasm for colour has undoubtedly been one of our biggest influences,” says Kip&Co.’s Kate Kate Heppell.

The partnership that has been almost ten years in the making with Ken number one on the brand’s dream list of collaborators.

Greenhouse Interiors ‘Golden’ collection

By contrast, ‘Golden’ is the latest bedding collection from Greenhouse Interiors and it’s a much more muted affair. According to the brand, the range is inspired by gentle rays and lazy beach days, the sound of the ocean roaring with the crashing of waves, an optimistic sea breeze, gelato and salty hair.

The new Spring/Summer range celebrates nostalgic prints, pattern play and the brand’s signature ingredient – colour. Designed in Melbourne, the painterly collection features soft, textured European linens and a tranquil, pastel palette.

“The smell of coconut oil, the taste of watermelon, sticky fingers and sandy feet. Dreamy sunsets, balmy nights, summer soirees and palm trees on the horizon. We are finally out of hibernation, and entering the golden days of spring and summer,” says Greenhouse Interiors’ Julia Green.

Perfect for summer, the brand’s art bedcovers are back this season but you’d better hop to it as they usually sell out.

1980’s nostalgia: Ken Done and Sheridan collaborate for summer

As a child of the eighties, the work of Ken Done is indelibly stamped on my memory. One of our first artists to venture into the design realm, Ken’s work is quintessentially Australian and it’s being spotlighted once again as part of Sheridan’s 50 year celebrations.

‘Saturday Sailing’ bed linen

The artist has a solid history with the bedding company – his 1987 collaboration with Sheridan turned both brands into international household names and represented a trailblazing moment in the home and lifestyle space by bringing vibrant art and colour into the home.

“Wherever you are in the world, there’s always something about the Australian light. There’s something about the sharpness of it, something about the clarity of it, something about the colours of Australia,” says Ken. And the range is certainly colourful.

‘Sunday Sailing’ cushion

A contemporary take on Ken’s original collaboration with the brand, the new collection features a limited-edition series of quilt covers, cushions and a beach towel too. The pieces showcase Ken’s signature painterly brush strokes and use of vibrant colour and they’ll form part of Sheridan’s upcoming Spring/Summer 2017 collection.

‘Antarctica’ bed linen

The ‘Saturday Sailing’ quilt cover design conjures a glorious day on Sydney Harbour – think sail boats, and abstract lashings of colour. Digitally printed onto 100 per cent cotton sateen, the design is a replication of one of Ken’s most recent works.

‘Sunday Sailing’ beach towel

The ‘Antarctica’ quilt cover is Ken’s take on the glacial landscape complete with explorers and penguins side by side. It was inspired by a recent trip that he made to the world’s southernmost tip – after which he came home and painted ‘Penguins and People III, 2015’ which forms the basis of the print.

‘Aquarium’ cushion

The ‘Aquarium’ cushion draws on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef for inspiration with tropical fish depicted in the abstract. The print is a digitally printed replica of his original 1994 painting ‘Jade Sea II.’

The perfect antidote to monochrome interiors, the range practically sings summer.

14 designers reinterpret the work of Hans J. Wegner

The CH 33 chair by Hans J. Wegner for Carl Hansen & Sons has long been considered a design classic, and this year it’s being given a twist, with furniture provider Cult inviting 14 of Australia’s most creative icons to reinterpret, reinvent and most importantly make their own mark on this popular chair.

The Reinventing Design Icons exhibition brings together charity, creativity, iconic Danish design and reaffirms Australia and New Zealand as influential design destinations. The exhibition, which will be held on the evening of 12 November at the Cult Sydney showroom, will feature the work of artist Ken Done, architects Hecker Guthrie and stylist Megan Morton (to name a few).

Not just about the names and the designs, the Reinventing Design Icons project is an exhibition and online charity auction. Each designer has chosen a charity that is close to their heart and the exhibition opening will also launch the online auction.

The 14 designers taking part are celebrated in their respective industries, which is why they have been selected by Cult to reinterpret the work of design master Hans J. Wegner.

November can’t come quick enough, because I honestly cannot wait to see what all the designers come up with!
