Are you a budding designer? Good Design Awards wants you!

For any budding designers out there, the 2016 Good Design Awards are now open for entries! The Awards welcome entries from anywhere in the world, with more than 400 expected.

Good Design Awards 4

Founded in 1958, the Awards are a prestigious celebration of the best up-and-coming products and services on the market. They’re designed to help designers of all ages and stages of their career.

The Young Australian Design Award, for example, is restricted to entrants under 30, while the new Design Entrepreneur Award is focussed on unearthing the best ideas yet to hit the market. More developed ideas are also welcome. 2015’s Good Design of the Year went to Tesla Motors for its Model S electric car.

Good Design Awards 3

All designs are welcome, says Good Design Australia CEO, Brandon Gien. “We’re looking at every aspect of design and innovation – from the design of a toothbrush to a high-rise building, and everything in between.” Winners gain not only publicity, but also valuable business assistance. All finalists get the chance to work with CtechBA, who are experts in commercialising products and ideas.

Good Design Awards 2

Even just entering has benefits – the audience is full of potential investors, so you never know where networking may take your idea! Excitingly, the Awards ceremony will coincide with the launch of Vivid Sydney. The open exhibition of finalists will be a great addition to the light and ideas festival.

Submissions close on 15 April. For more information: Good Design Awards, Young Design Awards, Design Entrepreneur Awards

Eames’ grandson to be a special guest at this year’s Sydney Film Festival and Vivid Sydney

With Sydney Film Festival and Vivid Sydney set to begin this June, Eames Demetrios — grandson of the legendary Charles and Ray Eames — has been announced as a special guest.

Eames

Eames himself (yes, that’s his first name and it gets a little confusing!) is best known for his work as director of the Eames Office, where he is spearheading the successful rediscovery, preservation and extension of his late grandparents’ design legacy. As part of the Sydney Film Festival, he will introduce a specially curated program of short films by Charles and Ray Eames at Event Cinemas, followed by a book signing in the Festival Hub, which will feature several key furniture pieces designed by Charles and Ray.

Eames will also be a keynote speaker as part of the Vivid Ideas program, a key component of Vivid Sydney. He will lead two signature workshop events, focusing on innovative thinking and creative design. This multi-talented man is also a writer, filmmaker and cinematographer in his own right. He has written eight books, including An Eames Primer — a thematic biography capturing the life, work, process and philosophy of his grandparents — and has made over 65 films and videos. Find more information here and here.

Join me at the launch of Blog Society as part of Vivid 2013

My talented friend Jaclyn Carlson (of the Little Paper Trees blog) is launching a cool new concept called Blog Society and I was flattered when she asked me to speak on a panel at its launch. Even more exciting, this is happening as part of  the fabulous Vivid Sydney festival (the one with the amazing light shows and fab events).

Jaclyn describes Blog Society as “a long awaited community for Australian bloggers, creatives and the endlessly curious to connect, collaborate and share.” The launch also includes an afternoon workshop, where you’re invited to join an ever growing community of Australian lifestyle/design bloggers to learn from and inspire one another.

BLOG_SOCIETYMyself and Vivian Mansour of Ish & Chi blog, will be sharing our blogging stories before breaking into smaller groups to explore the art of digital storytelling. Then there’s a hands-on, informal styling and photography workshop by Natalie Hayllar from Eat Read Love blog, photographer Madeline Johnson from Mr & Mrs Johnson and photographer Emma Scamell.
