Mind boggling Airbnb ideas to become reality in Australia

From tens of thousands of entries from around the world, 100 aspiring designers, architects, and DIYers from 23 countries have been chosen to bring their crazy ideas to life and share in the US$10million OMG! Fund from Airbnb. And four of them are in Australia!

Sitemap for bubble on top of a mountain

The winning ideas stood out for their unique and inspiring design, sustainable consideration, and novel ways of offering immersive guest experiences. Recipients will each receive up to US$100,000 to make their fantastical creations possible.

Four Australians have won a share in the ‘OMG Fund’ and over the course of the next 10 months, will design, construct and outfit their dreams to be guest-ready by next summer. And here they are…

Eco-Igloo by Catherine W

The Eco-Igloo dome home will be built using 6,000 handmade aircrete bricks. Made up of four large domes which blend seamlessly into nature, the property is perfect for Aussie climates and it is a game changer to help more people achieve beautiful and affordable builds.

Luxury bubble on top of a mountain by Timothy H

Inspired by a sky full of stars and the power of reconnecting with nature, a stay in this luxury bubble will make you feel like you are floating on top of the world. Located a stone’s throw from the world-famous Wilsons Promontory National Park in Gippsland, Victoria, the bubble is also eco-friendly and sustainable, with the deck made out of recycled timber, and equipped with energy-saving appliances, low-flush toilets and low-flow showers using tank water.

Model of luxury bubble on top of a mountain

“My inspiration came after sleeping under the stars in a small tent when I was in France last year,” said Timothy. “The idea was to create an out of the ordinary, yet unique and accessible experience for guests. The result is a transparent bubble high up on a mountain top with 360-degree views of the night sky, fields and oceans below.”

Kangaroom floating pod by Matt D

“We want to provide guests with a unique Aussie experience, to deliver a genuine connection to the landscape, and at the same time, inspire sustainable living and make eco-tourism mainstream,” said Matt from Melbourne on his Kangaroom floating pod idea.

Model of Kangaroom

Utilising almost 80% glass to seamlessly connect guests with their natural surroundings, Kangaroom will be designed using modular pods to create a floating Airbnb stay situated on a kangaroo playground in Daylesford, Victoria. The property hosts an abundance of wildlife and will act as a ‘reverse zoo’ where guests reside in a comfortable and luxurious space, while being close to nature. The multi-level structure will levitate over panoramic views of the kangaroo habitat, leaving guests transformed with a new appreciation for the environment and empowered to make changes in their own lives for a sustainable future.

Ultimate Airbnb on plane at an airfield by Mary C

After saving two Boeing 737 aircrafts from being scrapped, OMG! Fund recipient Mary dismantled and transported them to York, WA. Guests will be able to stay in one of these aircrafts at an airfield, while the other will be used as a tour experience. The aircraft will come with two en suites and can accommodate up to six guests.

Concept of Ultimate Airbnb on Plane at an Airfield

Guests may find these unique homes available as part of Airbnb’s OMG! category in summer 2023.

Win a top of the range robot vacuum and mop!

As you may have heard me mention a number of times, I couldn’t live without my own robot vacuum, Bertie, which I affectionately refer to as my third child. So I want everyone else to know the joy of robot ownership too!

Thanks to Robot My Life, we have one of their latest HOBOT LEGEE D7s to give away, an all-in-one vacuum and mop!

As an improved version of its younger counterpart, the HOBOT LEGEE, the HOBOT LEGEE D7 takes it one step further with far superior suction, movement, obstacle navigation and auto recognition mapping. And you can of course control everything from an app on your phone.

When it comes to living with pets, this device is the ultimate must-have. The new patented tangless vacuum suction design from HOBOT creates a clever formula that not only helps reduce hair getting tangled in the motor but it ensures your suction force is not disrupted by a brush roller full of hair. The tangless suction port removes 80% of the hair before it reaches the brush roller.

Navigation is made easy when it comes to mopping and vacuuming. The device will automatically recognise carpet and raise the mopping pad by 6mm. It also automatically raises itself when the unit docks, which helps ensure your mopping pad gets ventilation to extend the life of the pads.

Glenn Yee, managing director of Robot My Life, said that in the past 12 months, the demand for home robots has continued to grow. “Consumer confidence in the home robotics sector is increasing every day when we see more products become smarter.

“Every new product on the market is becoming more advanced than the previous version. Our industry is focused on listening to their consumers, and because of this, we’ve been able to create products that meet a unique demand.”

The HOBOT LEGEE D7 currently retails for $699 and can be purchased online.

Win the robot vacuum that even empties itself with iRobot!

If you’ve followed me for a while, you’ll know about my longstanding love affair with Bertie, my iRobot Roomba robot vacuum. If there’s one thing I recommend over and over again to busy mums, it’s one of these. I mean, that smug feeling of someone (ok, thing) else doing the vacuuming while you work/go out/do something fun is hard to beat.

My new BFF Ernie hard at work in my kitchen

It’s no secret I’m a bit of a neat freak, which can be challenging in a house with two young boys. The sand! The crumbs! The dirt! Shame robot vacuums can’t do anything about the random rocks that appear everywhere but that’s another story…

But I’m afraid I’ve started cheating on Bert with my new friend, Ernie! You see iRobot let me try one of their newer models. I’ve had Bertie (the iRobot 980) for about four years and he still does a cracking job and several times a week. But Ernie! Well, Ernie goes one further by emptying himself! I KNOW! It’s a dream.

And I have one to give away (worth $1,899) to one of you lucky lot so keep reading until the end.

Ernie (I’m not weird because everyone names their robot) is the iRobot Roomba i7+ model. No more emptying the machine’s bin into the rubbish yourself (which always makes a bit of a mess). This model can empty its own bin for up to 60 days into an AllergenLock bag. This also means a lot less of what might happen before, where I’d be out and the robot would stop because the bin was full and take itself back to the docking station.

Handles under the couches, and from rug to hard floor and back again, with ease!

And while we’re talking about efficiency, Roomba i7+ runs continuously for up to 90 minutes, then automatically recharges and resumes cleaning to complete the entire job. When it has a low battery, the robot will intelligently recharge for the amount of time needed to continue cleaning and get the job done. Gosh, how I love this! No wasted time!

The app is very easy to use

The only downside of this (and it’s small) is that the docking station is much bigger (that dirt has to be emptied into something, right?!) which may just mean you have to think a little harder about where to position it (near a good WiFi signal) if you’re fussy about things being out of sight!

Ernie at his docking station, which he empties his own bin into! It tells you when it’s full and needs emptying.

Everything else about Ernie is so much better though (sorry Bert!). There’a a lot more tech in the iRobot HOME app and from a user experience perspective this just means it’s even easier to get it to go exactly where you want it to!

Imprint Smart Mapping allows you to control which rooms are cleaned and when, for vacuuming that works around you and your schedule. Plus, you can tell your robot to stay away from certain areas or objects with customisable Keep Out Zones. Patented iAdapt 3.0 Navigation with vSLAM technology allows the robot to map its surroundings to seamlessly clean an entire level of your home. The robot creates visual landmarks to keep track of where it’s been and where it has yet to clean. So clever, right? But super easy to control yourself from your smartphone.

Our playroom, for example, needs vacuuming most days, so I love being able to tell Ernie to do just that. The back of our house, where the bedrooms are, tends to get less dirty than the communal living, kitchen and dining areas at the front, so when Seb goes back to school, I’ll be putting the robot on a schedule to automatically clean those areas when I’m doing pick-up every other day. The best feeling!

Ernie even goes up and down the fall in the tiled floor where the open shower is (obviously only when the floor is dry!)

While we don’t have pets (unless you call two small boys animals), the i7+ is a great choice if you do, or if you suffer with allergies. Its premium three-stage cleaning system cleans the dirt and pet hair you see, and the allergens and dust you don’t.

I also find this model a lot quieter so I don’t mind having it on even if I’m home working.

If like me, you have the iRobot Braava jet m6 mop as well (or are thinking about investing, especially if you win the vacuum in our competition!), the Roomba i7+ even tells it to start mopping when vacuuming is complete. Now that’s what we call teamwork! I will definitely be setting up this function!

After a week of trialing the i7+ I am super impressed. It is quieter, has a longer battery life, more smart features, and (my favourite) the self-emptying function is THE BEST. I’d love you to have one too! Make sure you enter the competition by completing the below form. Open to Australian residents only.

If you’re not lucky enough to win, stay tuned for a generous discount code next week!

Disclosure: I was gifted the iRobot Roomba i7+ for the purposes of an honest review.

Would you like $100,000 USD to build your dream home?

With Airbnb searches for unusual spaces (think shepherds’ huts, windmills and tiny houses) having increased by nearly 70 per cent over the last year, people are clearly seeking unique holiday experiences. In response, and in great news for budding designers, Airbnb has just launched a $1 million USD search for the most unique home ideas.

The fund is the company’s first-ever $1 million USD ($1.5 million AUD) program and it’s designed to enable anyone with an extraordinary house idea to design and build it, and then share it with travellers all over the world.

So, if you’ve got a unique home idea that needs funding to take flight, now just might be the time. Submissions, which are open until mid-April 2020, will be judged against a set of criteria including creativity, feasibility, sustainability and social good.

The most obvious criteria, ‘creativity,’ asks that a successful entry be full of surprises, both inside and out. The ‘feasibility’ category asks you to demonstrate how you’d pull off the project with a budget of $100,000 USD. ‘Sustainability’ will be judged in terms of the project’s use of recycled materials, energy efficiency, smart irrigation, waste reduction and its overall environmental footprint, while ‘social good’ looks at the way the project would benefit guests, neighbours and the community at large.

“The only thing better than pushing the boundaries of style, is empowering others to do the same. I’m thrilled to join Airbnb in this global search for the most outrageous, spectacular home ideas ever. I can’t wait to see these concepts developed by design lovers from around the world first-hand,” says Billy Porter.

MVRDV partner Fokke Moerel is equally enthusiastic. “The Unique Airbnb Fund is a great initiative that makes hospitality exciting. It will empower people to create new spaces with daring, imaginative and fantastic architecture,” says Fokke.

Jen’s deck is summer ready + win my outdoor dining set

Sponsored by Early Settler

My excitement about using our deck this spring and summer is palpable. We had the deck installed while I was in hospital giving birth to Charlie almost a year ago now (I know, where does the time go?!) and really didn’t use it as much as we could have due to having a newborn, being too permanently tired to remember we even had an outdoor area, and keeping him out of the harsh summer sun! We’ve since had a retractable sun awning installed so we’re now all set to enjoy the good weather which keeps teasing us in Sydney lately, swapping between four seasons in one week at times!

When we did the deck we got rid of the old timber pergola, which means we now need furniture which can withstand the elements (as there’s no roof to protect from the rain), so we’ve added to our existing Early Settler lounges (no longer available) with the Blake table and benches. Made of powder coated aluminium, they’re perfect for outdoor use. I love the simple but sturdy design, based on a classic picnic table, and the way the white contrasts with the grey deck. At a generous 240cm long, they’re perfect for big family get-togethers.

As with indoor spaces, I love to give the outdoor space a little refresh with the seasons, so I chose some new outdoor cushions (mixed in with a few indoor ones because why not?! They’re easy enough to bring inside or throw in a storage box) and accessories. The deck’s looking picture perfect so I’m now planning all kinds of summer entertaining!

All the aluminium furniture out here is not only super hardy, it’s really not heavy at all, which means we can move it around to suit the way we are using the space, whether that’s a party, a big family sit down dinner or Seb hurtling around on his scooter. I’ve lost count of the different furniture configurations we have already tried, and the best thing about benches is they’re a lot easier to move than eight chairs!

Speaking of eight chairs, this table can comfortably fit 10 people with four on each bench and a Cate chair at either end if needed. I love the perforated look of the back of these chairs which adds some much needed texture. They’re also stackable, which makes them practical too, and they come in other colours if you feel like adding a pop of coral or slate blue to your al fresco.

Regardless of the fact that Early Settler are a partner of ours, I can honestly say I recommend their outdoor range all the time because you really can’t beat it for value, quality and having so much variety to suit all tastes. I’m also really impressed with their more contemporary designs which are really different and not at all what you’d expect for outdoor.

WIN MY DINING PACKAGE!

2019 VIVID Design Awards finalists & ticket giveaway!

Australia’s longest running and highly regarded design competition VIVID (Vibrant Visions in Design) is back again this year with a fresh crop of talented finalists. The program, currently in its 16th year, has helped kickstart many successful design careers and is an important part of the local and international design industry.

This year’s 53 successful finalists (the largest field ever) entered across four key categories including Furniture, Lighting, Concept and Object in the competition that runs alongside the Decor + Design show. Today we’re bringing you some of our favourites.

'Object' finalist Manuel Canestrini's 'Colonnade' is a metal stackable indoor planter box that is inspired by ancient roman aqueducts.

Inspired by Australia’s beautiful coastlines, Simon Haeser’s ‘Oceania’ is a stand-out piece from the Furniture category. The modern two-seat sofa boasts clean lines and curves and while sophisticated embraces comfort too.

Another notable Furniture finalist is a submission from a trio of designers (Rachel McGuigan, Kerri Hollingsworth and Zetta Kanta) who collaborated to create ‘form. fibre. furniture’ which is a collection of three textured, multi-purpose storage ottoman/coffee tables with reversible lids.

The Lighting finalists are also a bunch of gems but Pauline Tsolos’ ‘Brass Wall Sconce’ is notable for its beautiful, oyster-like appearance. Akin to jewellery, the piece of functional sculpture is hand-crafted in Melbourne.

The Concept category is always interesting, and this year is no different. We particularly like ‘Freka. The Chair’ by Ivana Dancova who based the piece upon the multiple ways that a human body twists and contorts in its physical environment, by inspiring physical interaction with what is essentially a statement-making bulbous latex inflatable. Fun! It reminds us of the iconic B&B Italia Gaetano Pesce Series.

The Object category produced many fabulous finalists including Marta Figueiredo’s colourful ‘TOTEMS.’ Made from wool, acrylic paint and pine, the tactile items are comprised of one ottoman and two sound absorbent sculptures that plays with human scale – the pieces are 2.5 metres, 2.1 metres and 0.5 metres respectively.

This year’s judges, and leading industry figures, include George Danos (JR Furniture), Hayley Beaden (Tait), Dan Treacy (Rakumba), Fil Bjazvic (Latitude), Jan Henderson (Inside Magazine) and Natalie Mortimer (Australian Design Review). The winners will be announced at a special awards ceremony on Thursday July 18.

Online platform Designbx proves its impact on interiors

Leading online interior design platform Designbx has been named a finalist in the 2018 NSW Telstra Business Awards in the ‘Emerging and Energising’ category. An industry disruptor, this very impressive hat tip recognises the impact that the company has had on the interior design industry.

Designbx client project
Designbx client project

Designbx was launched in 2016 by businesswomen Kerena Berry, Kylie Pratt and Emily Carding, connecting homeowners and small business with interior designers who compete to style their homes. Created to be affordable, flexible and fun, the egalitarian platform was designed to put interior design within everyone’s reach.

“We’ve built a 100 per cent online marketplace where you can collaborate with amazing designers and choose from a huge catalogue of furniture and homewares to create amazing spaces. From our online style quiz all the way through to our personal shopper service, we’ve made it an incredibly intuitive process to ensure every Australian can have access to professional design,” says co-founder Kerena Berry.

“By migrating all the best features of professional design to an online platform, Designbx brings design packages well within the budget of most Australians and our industry discounts mean our clients can save thousands on furniture and homewares,” says Kerena of the platform that also offers 60 day post-project support.

Designbx client project
Designbx client project

As for the company’s recent Telstra win, it’s certainly no mean feat – to be a finalist, Designbx had to be in the top 25 of 5,000 applications in New South Wales. “Although entering the awards took a lot of time, I would highly recommend it to any other business owner to have a go. No matter the outcome, we viewed entering the awards as a way of being able to stop and reflect upon what we’d achieved. When you’re building a new business, you seldom get a chance to do that so this kind of forced us but in a good way. We were able to reflect on our successes and celebrate our achievements, and this was an inspiring process. It made us so proud,” says Kerena.

“An aspect of the business the judges singled out was our commitment to innovation and customer experience improvements, as we reinvest 25 per cent of gross profit into product development. We are continuing to grow our partnerships with designers, manufacturers and other suppliers to grow our product catalogue of 50,000 products, to continue to offer clients a diverse range of bespoke and mainstream products. Our client base is continuing to expand geographically, with incredible projects being delivered by designers in all states of Australia.”

The company has a charitable focus too. “For every home that we transform, it allows us to give back to the community. We are currently committed to the Pledge 1% movement, and support organisations such as Bear Cottage who tirelessly provide respite to families facing terminal illness. We have a strong vision to expand this year on year, and it’s a very big personal driver for all three of us,” says Kerena.

Gourmet Traveller reveals 2018’s best Australian hotels

Currently in its fifth year, the 2018 Gourmet Traveller Hotel Guide Awards were handed down this month (seriously, it really is awards season!) and the winners have given me a serious case of wanderlust. From a new boutique inner-city Sydney hotel with its own cinema to a wharf side Hobart hotel boasting a deluxe mini-bar, the fabulously specific categories include ‘Best Bed’ and ‘Best Club Sandwich.’ How fun! What they all have in common is some seriously good design!

The new it rugs are all about texture!

There’s a very distinct new trend coming through in rugs lately and it’s texture. I for one am loving it! Rugs have always been a way to add much needed layers and warmth to your home, but now that layer is almost taking on a 3D look and feel. Flat rugs are no longer where it’s at. We’re talking extra texture!

Early Settler have run with this and their latest floor fashions are so beautiful. Whether you’re after something neutral or colourful, I’ve rounded up my favourites for you. Better still, if you’re quick, they’re currently on sale.

THE NEUTRALS

There’s a reason this Moroccan style rug has been in vogue for years now. It’s unusual for a rug design to stand the test of time but this one sure has and you’ll have seen similar in countless magazine shoots. It’s soft and fluffy underfoot, timeless and easy to work with black and white, with the boho look of the fringed edging. The Bohemia Luxe Diamond Head Knotted NZ Wool 150x240cm is currently $544 down from $699.

The stunning raised pattern on this Bohemia Peeko Hand Tufted Wool Cream and Grey 150x240cm rug is a standout for me. So special! It’s currently $374 down from $499.

With all the texture but a less obvious pattern, this Braided Diamond Hand Woven Grey and Cream rug 240x300cm is easy to work with and nice and large for a living room. Currently $749 down from $999.

It’s a traditional pattern but the raised design and touch of colour bring the Damask Motif Hand Tufted Pink and Cream Rug 150x240cm bang up to date. Currently $374 down from $499.

Another real favourite of mine, the large Nomad Diamond Hand Tufted Grey and White Rug 240x300cm is the perfect blend of modern and traditional. Currently $599 down from $799. And you know my feelings on the bigger the rug, the better!

MAKE A COLOUR STATEMENT

I’m a sucker for a pink rug. Not just for little girls’ rooms, this subtle rosy number would give a feminine feel to many different spaces. The Pearl Blush Handloom  Fringed Wool Pink Rug 150x240cm is currently a bargain $299 down from $399.

Let the pattern do the talking with this large Dreamtime Hand Tufted Wool Black and White Rug 240cmx300cm. Inspired by Aboriginal art, it’s made from a wool and cotton blend and the charcoal colour gives it a timeless and sophisticated feel that would work in many interiors. Currently $749 down from $999.

A fresh take on stripes, the Dunne Ripple Hand Woven Grey Rug 240cmx300cm is a little bit ethnic, a little bit industrial! The hardwearing wool blend and dark colours mean this is a forgiving rug which would work well under a dining table. Currently $749 down from $999.

Striking the perfect balance between 60’s geometric chic and contemporary sophistication, this large format wool blend rug is perfect for a bedroom or living space. Hand made in India using a timeless pattern and tonings, this an investment for your floor that will stand the test of time. The Geo Shaded Diamond Hand Tufted Blue and Cream 240cmx300cm is currently $599 down from $799.

Teal is definitely making a comeback this season so could be the perfect colour to lift an otherwise neutral room. The Marrakesh Peacock Hand Tufted Teal Rug 150cmx240cm is handmade in India from 80% wool and currently a snip at $299 down from $399.

Check out the Dulux Colour Awards 2018 winners

In its 32nd year, this year’s Dulux Colour Awards had a record number of entries (more than 300) from across Australia and New Zealand, many of which were pretty incredible. I’ve no doubt the judging panel (including industry luminaries Miriam Fanning, David Flack and David Hicks) had a tough time of it before the awards were handed down recently at a gala event at the National Gallery of Victoria.

Taking out the top award in the ‘Single Residential Interior’ category was the ‘Percy St’ residence by Bagnoli Architects. The original Victorian cottage was renovated and extended and features the most glorious pastel paint shades.

“Underpinned by an innovative approach to its philosophy and execution, this entry has a beautiful energy and innocence, which captures the essence of what the Dulux Colour Awards mean to us. The exploration of colour is soft and serene, yet commanding, and responds to the architectural form rather than being simply applied to a surface. With greys, blacks and splashes of colour, the interior scheme flows seamlessly to the exterior, demonstrating how the consideration of colour in a design concept can add light and depth to a home,” says judge David Flack.

Special commendation went to Fiona Lynch’s ‘Elsternwick House’ project which another grand Victorian restoration. “This classically beautiful and sophisticated residence has been pared back for all the right reasons, and the monochromatic palette fits the architecture: white and black highlight structural elements and openings, while a range of greys tint the walls,” says David.

Another special commendation went to Arent&Pyke’s ‘Amarelo Terrace’ project which is a glorious celebration of blue. “The considered delivery of the whole project, fully resolved in composition, style and design, is evident here. It wasn’t forced, and results in a timelessness that is heightened by clever layering, materiality of finishes and an intimacy in the design and use of colour,” says David.

The ‘Multi-residential Interior’ category was taken out by Perth architect Simon Pendal for his daring ‘North Perth Townhouse’ project. “A clear, concise concept at the heart of this entry separates it from the rest. With bold hues cutting through a base of white, the internal spaces are cleverly defined, while a play of gloss and matte paint finishes adds another dimension to the form. There is no subtlety here; instead there’s an unwavering commitment to the use of contrasting tones to delineate the interior,” says David.

House Rules 2018 homeowners’ reveal: SA’s Jared & Jess

It’s House Rules time again folks and the first reveal to take place was in Adelaide where former AFL star Jared had his bachelor pad transformed into a New York inspired home for him and his partner Jess. “You guys just blew us out of the water. You don’t know how much it means that you created a life for Jared and I,” said Jess of the seven day renovation that has increased the property’s value by $160,000 according to local property experts.

With its new look, the beachside home now features exposed brick walls, raw timber and an industrial feel. The harder features are softened with plush furnishings including textured rugs, velvet chairs and cushions, floral prints and hints of turquoise and blush – much of which was sourced from Early Settler.

Master bedroom
Designed by Chiara and David, the master bedroom saw the dated glass bricks removed and exposed brick put in its place. While the couple loved the exposed brick and bed recess, they weren’t impressed with the paint work. “I think maybe just the finishes around the bed is probably what got you guys. But besides that, we thought it was great,” says says Jess of the space that features a gorgeous Early Settler pink velvet occasional chair.

Bathroom
Designed by Mel and Dave, Jess was blown away by the new bathroom. “This is next level. It’s not our bathroom! This is my favourite room in the whole house,” said Jess.

Josh and Brandon’s new industrial themed kitchen left Jared speechless. “I’m still lost for words. We were blown away,” said Jared.

Toad and Mandy designed the new dining space and the couple are enthralled with it – particularly the fake beam on the ceiling. “We walked in and we were just blown away – it hit the ‘New York warehouse’ rule perfectly,” said Jared.

Queensland team Mel and Dave received the highest score of the night with 9/10 points for their efforts in the couple’s bathroom but it was fellow Queensland carpenter brothers Josh and Brandon that won overall this week with a combined total of 28/30 points.

Brisbane designer wins top international design award

In an impressive coup, Brisbane-based interior designer and architect Renee Popovic beat stiff international competition recently to take out the top prize in the Victoria + Albert 2018 International Design Award, for a bathroom she designed.

Renee’s winning design

Entrants were asked to create a 3m x 3m boutique hotel bathroom that ‘inspires, relaxes and reinvigorates the guest’ and Renee beat over 140 other international interior designers and architects in the process.

The bathroom combines honed marble, lime wash render, terrazzo and brushed brass and the judges were particularly impressed with Renee’s use of curves within a square space. “My design approach is based on formal principles, but with a modern twist,” says Renee who was sent on an all-expenses-paid trip to see her winning bathroom recreated (using imitation materials) at the recent Salone del Mobile in Milan.

“I was faced with a relatively compact space, so felt it was important to utilise symmetry to create a coherent bathroom. I also chose to mix modern and traditional elements in the bathroom, opting for a modern bath with more traditional basins. Adding the Stone Grey exterior paint finish to the products was also an important detail,” says Renee who relished the opportunity to create a high-end experiential space.

“I was particularly inspired by the brief for boutique hotel design as it gives the designer the chance to create something truly unique that the guest wouldn’t usually experience at home. I was absolutely delighted to see my design come to life at Salone del Mobile,” says Renee.

“Renee’s design was truly original and it created a lot of conversations at Salone del Mobile about the nature of compact space design and how innovative interiors can shape a guest’s experience in a boutique hotel,” says Victoria + Albert’s marketing director Jonathan Carter.

Discover the amazing 2018 Dulux Colour Awards finalists

With a record-breaking 305 entries from Australia and New Zealand, this year’s Dulux Colour Awards is perhaps its best yet. From blue to yellow, green and pink the bold and inventive use of colour this year is next level – honestly, there are so many amazing finalists I found it hard to play favourites.

“We were thrilled to see such dynamic and inventive use of colour in this year’s entries. Architects and designers have really pushed the boundaries with colour application to create uplifting, engaging – and often thoroughly surprising – interior and exterior spaces,” says Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux colour planning and communications manager.

A celebration of the exceptional use of colour, this year’s 305 entries have been eliminated down to a list of 124 finalists (across commercial and residential spaces) with the final awards due to be presented at a gala event on May 10, 2018 at the National Gallery of Victoria. The judging panel includes design experts including David Hicks, Miriam Fanning and David Flack.

“Darker tones of black and charcoal continue to dominate in commercial and exterior spaces, but this year they’ve been punctuated with fun, vibrant accents of red, yellow and lime green in the form of panelling, door and window trims. There’s an unmistakable sense of 80’s nostalgia creeping in,” says Andrea.

“At the other end of the spectrum, we’re seeing a trend towards softer, warmer palettes in commercial interiors – chalky grey-greens, diluted pinks and earthy terracotta that add character and a cocooning vibe,” says Andrea.

“Blue is emerging as a popular choice in residential interiors – warm denim tones are adding a relaxed elegance to bedrooms and kitchens, while funky turquoise is being used to energise and excite. Impactful tones of yellow are also making an appearance, often in unexpected places, such as ceilings and interior trims, adding a sense of unbridled joy into interior spaces,” says Andrea.

“Grey has lost none of its appeal, particularly in residential exteriors, but rather than opting for a single shade, designers and architects are layering up multiple shades of the one colour for a more sophisticated and interesting, tonal look,” says Andrea.

You’ll never believe this stuff is from Early Settler!

Sponsored by Early Settler

While Early Settler have been impressing me with their latest collections for some time now, their limited edition pieces released this week just took things to a whole new level. So I’m here to highlight the best bits and urge you to get shopping ASAP, because stock (as the name suggests) is limited and once they’re gone, they’re gone! No just that, but one lucky reader will get to win a beautiful luxe velvet sofa. Keep reading…

The best thing about these new limited pieces is there’s not just one look, there’s something for all tastes: the ever-popular industrial, French and vintage looks, on-trend luxe (hello velvet!) and (moody) floral and last but not least, storage. Can you ever have too much storage?!

There’s loads to see in store and online, but these are my top picks.

There are several velvet sofas (gosh, I love velvet sofas) and I couldn’t pick just one. First up, the Lisette 3.5-seater (shown in peacock green velvet) which also comes in dusty pink, purple and indigo velvet). And the price? $1299! Yes, velvet, 3.5 seater and just $1299 for a limited time (full price $1699)! I know! I love its classic shape and proportions and comfy cushions.

If you’re looking to go all out with your statement sofa, look no further than this beauty, the Juel 3.5-seater Chesterfield at $1499. Shown in vintage indigo and vintage gold below, it also comes in vintage peacock, vintage duck egg and vintage plush rose. You can coordinate (or contrast) with the Juel occasional chairs too.

I’m so in love with this ultra luxe, bold, jewel-toned look.

Early Settler have always had great vanities and this 2-door Nico French Vanity with Bluestone Top is no exception. It’s also just $899. Say what?! You can completely change the look of your bathroom by replacing the vanity (without the need for more expensive renos) and I am a big believer in going for something other than the standard white gloss. This piece would add some warmth and character to your bathroom and the stone top is both practical and luxurious. I love how it looks more like a freestanding vintage furniture piece than a bathroom cabinet.

While we’re talking about storage, I absolutely love this Monde Shelving Unit for $1299. It would look amazing in a living room full of books and/or decor items, in a dining room filled with your favourite ceramics or even in a kids or teenager’s room (secured safely to the wall, of course), filled with toys and treasures. This is a great, affordable way to add a great display option to your home.

We’ve seen a growing trend for moody florals and this Louisa 2 Drawer Bedside Table is an unexpected way to add the trend to your bedroom for $399.

Do you have a buffet in your home? Let me tell you, they are so useful! Every home should have one and they can work in your living room, hallway, dining room or even kitchen! They’re not just for storage, they’re the perfect place to display and style up some beautiful vignettes, perhaps with a great lamp, and they can be the perfect item to ground some artwork or a gallery wall of family photos above. The vintage-look Coralie 3 Drawer Buffet comes in indigo (I know, such a surprise for me choose the navy version of something!) as well as turquoise and an easy-to-work-with light cloud. It’s $1299.

I bet you never knew you needed this Juan Bench either. And now you’re trying to work out how you can incorporate it into your home. It’s $499, also comes in white, and looks like you shipped it home from your last overseas holiday. Love it!

If you’re a fan of a luxe gold accent in your home, you’ll easily find a place for this elegant Exford Marble Side Table, which looks a lot more expensive than its $299 price tag.

If you have a bedroom without built-ins, storage can be a real challenge and  wardrobes don’t come cheap. I love the clean lines and industrial look of the Sleek Hanging Cabinet. At $499, I think it would be perfect in a guest bedroom.

So, what do you think of my picks? Which is your favourite? Would you agree that Early Settler have seriously upped their game in the last year?

Like I said, don’t hang around, and visit your nearest store or shop online today so you don’t miss out.

Kip & Co newness + win a $500 voucher!

The 12th collection from Melbourne bedding brand Kip & Co, ‘First Light’ launches today and as usual it’s bursting with colour – think sorbet tones and plenty of 70’s hues including a splash of the 2018 Pantone colour of the year. There are also bundles of fun prints with gemstones, kittens, unicorns and pretty florals that all make for an eclectic mix indeed!

“The collection was inspired by the pastel skies of dawn and the vibrancy of a new day with feminine florals and an array of beautiful colours,” says Kip & Co’s Hayley Pannekoecke. Cinnamon, tobacco, petrol blue, vanilla, strawberry and peach all feature in the range that is sure to please Kip & Co diehards.

The popular tassel throws are back in a variety of new shades

A couple of highlights for us include the oversized knitted ‘chunkie’ throws, the quilted heart print bedding and the frilled linen (ideal for a little girl’s room). And we were also excited to hear that the brand is reviving its cult favourite print, the Croc, which will be available again in bedding for adults, kids and babies.

The ever-popular Croc print

The range also features that popular 70’s textile – satin. And before making a snap judgement, it is one of the more beautiful executions of the fabric that we’ve seen in a long time and it’s gotten Hayley excited too.

Floral quilted satin – who would have thought?

“My favourite pieces would have to be the beautiful new satin quilted bedding range which includes four gorgeous colours with detailed embroidery. They are super soft and feminine and they will add a really vibrant and almost Mediterranean feel to your bedroom.”

I’m loving this oversized knitted ‘chunkie’ throw

There are also waffle bath mats, travel accessories, tableware, towels and some fabulous floor cushions. “I am also in love with our new GIANT floor beanbag – it’s the bomb!” says Hayley.

The child and baby ranges are also a lot of fun, and as per usual feature plenty of playful prints – kittens, gem stones, magical unicorns, cheeky dinosaurs and retro ball games are some of the standouts.

This kitten print is especially fun

In addition to the regular line-up of baby bedding, blankets, bags, beanbags, play mats and bamboo swaddles, there are some fabulous sweat tops and track pants for the little ones also.

“We shot the new collection in the most amazing Moroccan bohemian style home. The home was completely white and filled with the most glorious light. The natural light of the home in the tropics was amazing and suited our collection perfectly,” says Hayley.

Gem stones abound!

To celebrate the ‘First Light’ collection launch, Kip & Co is giving away a $500 voucher to one lucky Interiors Addict reader. For your chance of winning, complete the form below by 5pm AEST on 12 March 2018. Open to Australian residents only.

The top of the range iRobot Roomba 980 could change your life!

I know, I know, life-changing is a bit over the top, but no less true, if you ask me! I was just lucky enough to get my hands on the latest iRobot Roomba 980 vacuum cleaner and this is one smart home gadget I can definitely a) appreciate, b) understand and c) get a LOT of use out of. You all know I’m a neatfreak, so I am so excited! While you could say I sometimes get a kick out of cleaning, I’m also thrilled to have one less job to do while maintaining a tidy home! And with a toddler around, there is always always something to be vacuumed up, be it crumbs, grass, mud or, my absolute favourite, sand!

iRobot have released two new Roomba models, 890 and 690, which are more affordable and are also Wi-Fi connected like the top of the range Roomba 980. “Expanding the benefits of connectivity from our top-of-the-line Roomba 900 series through our popular Roomba 800 and 600 Series robots gives more of our customers the opportunity to experience the added functionality and control our connected app gives our robots,” said Colin Angle, chairman and CEO of iRobot. “This is an important next step in making the benefits of smart home technology available to everyone.”

This is where it gets really impressive and useful if you ask me. Using the iRobot HOME App, the vacuuming robots are ready to clean on demand from anywhere, any time. Each model can be scheduled to clean up to seven times a week from the familiar mobile device interface, which is available for Android and iOS devices. The app also provides information about cleaning status, customised tips and direct access to customer support. I’ll highlight some of the important features of the two new products!

Got pets? The new Roomba® 890 features dual, counter-rotating Tangle-Free Extractors like my Roomba 980. These extractors are made of durable rubber tread that grabs dirt and hair from any floor type, while reducing hair tangles and brush maintenance (I feel like this could be useful in our non-pet household too, where there always seems to be way too much black and blonde hair on the bathroom floor!).

A full suite of sensors and low profile design enables the Roomba 890 to navigate under furniture and around clutter. A Gen 2 motor produces five times the air power over previous generation Roombas , while the patented AeroForce 3-Stage Cleaning System uses a combination of agitation, extraction and suction to efficiently move dirt and debris from the floor to the dustbin. I have to say, this robot isn’t quiet, which reassures me, because it sounds like it’s doing a proper job!

Roomba heading under my toddler’s bed. Rather him than me!

At the end of its cleaning job, Roomba 890 returns to its charging station to recharge. The Roomba® 690 allows customers to experience the luxury of automated cleaning at a more affordable price. Valued at $849, the Roomba 690 gets to work, seamlessly navigating around clutter and under furniture. As with the Roomba 800 and 900 Series, the Roomba 690 uses a patented 3-Stage Cleaning System to efficiently clean carpet, rugs and hard floors. At just 9.3cm tall, the Roomba 690 fits under most furniture and kickboards, so dirt has no place to hide.

Although you can of course set Roomba to clean while you’re out of the house (thank goodness, because Seb is terrified of it!), I work from home and am often here, but I’m actually loving hearing the robot doing the housework in the background! The best! Not to mention emptying all that dust out is so satisfying! Evidence!!

The Roomba® 690 is available for purchase immediately in major electrical retail stores ($849 RRP). The Roomba® 637 ($599 RRP) and Roomba® 890 ($1099 RRP) will be available soon in major electrical retail stores.  My Roomba 980 is available for purchase at major electrical retail stores as well as online.

Can you believe iRobot created the home robot cleaning category with the introduction of its Roomba® Vacuuming Robot 15 years ago in 2002?!

Follow iRobot Australia on Instagram for the latest tips and inspiration.

Disclosure: I was gifted an iRobot Roomba to try it for myself. I have not been paid for this post and, as ever, my thoughts on this product are honest and my own.
