My bedroom makeover + win a $1,000 west elm voucher for yours!

We recently bought our first home in Sydney and have been slowly but surely adding our touches to it. The biggest job is a full bathroom reno and we’ve just locked that down so you can follow its progress in the new few months! Onto less involved projects, and I was keen to make the most of our beautiful master bedroom. It’s spacious and light-filled with two windows, and is definitely the largest bedroom Damian and I have ever had.

When we moved from our last place, I got ruthless at chucking out what I didn’t need or love. Bed, drawers and desk aside, it was a pretty blank canvas in the bedroom. We had it painted (Resene’s Black White) before we moved in, and installed new floors (natural oak laminate from Darren Palmer’s Provincial Lane range for Carpet Court) and it was just crying out for those extra layers of warmth, texture, colour and interest. I couldn’t think of a store I’d rather team up with to transform it than west elm as I pretty much love everything they do, so when they asked me, I leapt at the chance to work with them to turn my bedroom into a grown-up sanctuary (and the one place we try and keep the baby’s toys out of)! I’ve also recently moved a secretaire desk into the bedroom and when our part-time nanny starts, I plan on sometimes hiding in there to work!

Their Design Services stylist, Brendan Nash, asked me what sort of look I was after before providing a mood board. I immediately loved almost everything on it, so after making a few tweaks, I left it all in his capable hands until makeover day! It was so exciting to have a professional style my bedroom; what a treat!

Regular readers will know my favourite colour is navy, which is convenient for a couple’s room because it’s nice and unisex! I also love gold accents and have them throughout our home, from my sofa legs to cabinet handles, accessories and so on. I wanted the room to feel calm and cosy, conducive to both relaxing and sleeping and focusing to write at my desk.

I think you’ll agree, he nailed it! I absolutely love our new room and have found myself going to bed early a lot because I’m so keen to hang out in there! I also swear my bed is more confortable thanks to its new linen, although I’m not sure if this is in my head or the reality?! I’m also a definite convert to the top sheet, something I have never seen the point of having before with a doona! With winter drawing in, it was the perfect time to transform this space into a warm and inviting boudoir!

I love the layered rug look (something I wouldn’t have been brave enough to try myself) and while I don’t think I’d have picked the bedsides myself, they’re a surprise hit! I love the texture and warmth added by the reclaimed timber, but the white lacquer is modern and light and easily wipe clean. I love the roomy drawer to hide away all those essentials, and the space underneath for books and mags.

It was a real luxury to have my bed made to look like one out of a magazine spread and I watched Brendan and his colleague Naomi Young carefully, making mental notes. I absolutely love the feel and laid back luxe look of linen but had never thought of choosing it in navy before, always playing it safe with white. I really love the colour injection in this room. Cleverly, the only touches of pink are in the one cushion and the flowers, so if I want to change the pink to a different accent colour down the track it’ll be really easy (and let’s face it, everything goes with navy!).

If you have a little bedroom envy (and frankly, I couldn’t blame you!), then listen up, because west elm are giving you the chance to win a $1,000 voucher to spend on goodies for your own home. Simply enter using the form below by midnight Sydney time on 25 May 2016.

Thanks for the opportunity to win this amazing prize. Love West Elm and totally dont have the $$ avail for a revamp that we need, so thanks!!. P.s I have fingers and toes crossed. 😀

My house is on the market right now so a newly west elmed room in my new home would be brilliant……. once I find my new home of course ;0) !!

What a beautiful makeover – I personally think custom made curtains will look beautiful and really complete the look.

Hi Jen I would love to know where your valance is from? Trying to find something other than a white quilted

Hi Meg. It’s not a valance, it’s actually the bed itself, which is from Forty Winks. I know what you mean about struggling to find other than white though as I recently tried for our spare bed!

Looks incredible. We are about to revamp our master and I have been thinking of getting a similiar bedhead and look. Love the double rug, what a fabulous idea that I would never have thought of. Enjoy this lovely room x

This is beautiful, so serene. My bedroom is almost the exact opposite of yours, Jen – I had the walls painted navy and use mainly white linen and accents of gold, charcoal and blush. I am a firm believer that our bedrooms are our sanctuaries and I’m fairly sure I could drop a grand in West Elm in under 15 minutes – so much beautiful stuff!

Can you tell me how much the total package cost to update? The look is great but I suspect the cost is huge. Thx.

Hi Sam, the cost of every single thing from west elm comes to around $4000 which is a lot, but in reality I don’t think most people would need to replace everything to get a new look. I hope you’ll enter our comp for a chance to do your own $1000 makeover! Jen

I think curtains would keep it soft and welcoming in the bedroom – also help retain warmth in the room during winter.

hi Jen, your bedroom looks fantastic. Gorgeous and interesting. I love seeing my painted desk in there also. Always a thrill to see where my painted furniture ends up in people’s homes. thanks for your purchase once again.
Fiona

Hi! I bought the desk from the very clever Fiona at Lilyfield Life. http://www.lilyfieldlife.com/
I had asked her to keep an eye out for something like it and when she found this, it was perfect! She painted it too. The chair is a west elm dining chair but I’m not sure they still do this colour.

We just had an offer accepted on buying our first home in Australia yesterday (yay!) so would love the West Elm voucher and specialist help from them too, to pull our currently disjointed bedroom together!

I am new to this site and feel so lucky to have found it; wonderful articles, inspirational styling and much more, a place that feels like a community. I was first captivated by the harmonious enlightenment and genuine passion/love you share for all things on this website, such a fantastic privilege. Thank you for your kind generosity with the chance to a $1000 bedroom makeover compliments of West Elm and good luck to all those who enter this great promotion.

Hi Jen
I’m ‘addicted’ to your blog and also ‘addicted’ to Westelm..we just finished building our dream home and have been ‘lusting’ over the largest size Souk Rug for our living room from there for years.. It’s been on special for a few weeks now and that cheeky grand would almost buy it… We have stone & timber accents in there.??????????????????????????

I love the look and atmosphere of plantation shutters. For me, they are worth the investment. Love the way they allow light and air flow to be controlled.

Hi Jen, looks amazing! Where is the photo shelf above your bed from? And is your bed a Queen or a King? Thanks x

The bedroom looks fabulous! Love the layered look and think that extra long drapes would look awesome in that space. Was the shelf above the bed an added addition? I am after something similar. Thanks!

Hi Jen, I’ve just recently found your site through lilyfieldlife.com and I’m really glad I did! Great articles and ideas. We are currently building a house after travelling and working our way around Australia in a van for the past nearly 11 years so I have lots of plans and am madly making lists of things to buy for a house 🙂 Seeing your bedroom with the navy is great as that is the colour I am planning on using in our bedroom – and those linen sheets look amazing. Thanks very much for the opportunity to enter the West Elm competition, their products are gorgeous, so good luck to everyone 🙂

LOVE this room! Our bedroom is in dire need of a makeover! The bed is old and needs replacing urgently. Would love a nice bed head exactly like this one. Maybe would make me want to actually go to bed earlier and have a much better sleep 🙂

looks fantastic! I especially love the navy linen quilt cover and am looking at similar for my new bedroom decor

Congrats Jen on your new place and large gorgeous restful bedroom retreat! May the wonderful force you have continue.
(And may a little be sent my way with this competition as we really really need a break from the health challenges we’re fighting for years).
Maybe for your curtains follow the layering mantra; one light and one heavier layer for a modern luxe look using neutral colours in tones slightly darker than wall colour. I can literally see it so please forgive my detailed enthusiasm.
Use light gauzy transparent s-fold ceiling to slight floor puddle curtains for the light layer as it frames and widens the windows, keeps a light gauzy look, doesn’t need much horizontal space when open, and keeps it looking luxe. Use brass or black thin rods just below the ceiling cornice. These curtains would be mainly open as decoration (if not needed for daytime privacy), think like a scarf draped open. You could edge the inner vertical and floor hem in a strip of navy linen (which also helps stop these bits from getting dirty).
And use a blind as the heavier part to keep it warm for look and actual winter warmth. For the blind maybe a linen-textured mid-coloured blackout roller blind (with the top roller hidden under the existing pelmet). Or remove the pelmet and add a roman blind as the heavier under layer, starting from behind the curtain rod and ending just over the window glass when open. And ending over the bottom of the window when closed. And edge the bottom of the blind in navy trim.

LOVE to let a stylist loose in my home! Original fireplaces, high ceilings, white on white walls, ceilings & white plantations .. BUT I’m missing the styling gene. Why doesn’t my bedroom look like this aagghhh thanks for lovely ideas x

You know you’ve great styling when you make it look effortless – which you always do. I would like to manifest the beautiful styling to make my studio unit – part of a homeless womens’ accommodation scheme – an inviting and comfortable space which negates the stigma of my current circumstances.

Hi, love the look. However I can’t find that navy quilt at west elm site is it from somewhere else?
Thanks

I found so much inspiration in this piece for our master bedroom in the house we are building. 3 long years of home building and we are finally ready to start looking at soft furnishings 🙂
Could you tell me where the white chest of drawers is from please? I love it!

Hi Gemma, glad you liked it! The chest of drawers is from IKEA and hacked using a product called Overlays which sadly doesn’t seem to be available in Oz now but I’m sure you could get sent from the States as doesn’t weigh much at all.

Your room is beautiful, I move into a new home in the next few weeks and will slowly decorate my bedroom too. I love plantation shutters (but so pricy too) , but curtains are also a beautiful look – I can’t decide between the two either! Once you do your windows I hope you will show us a pic

Beautiful bedroom! Personally I’d go for sheers on the windows. I love the little secretaire desk, think I may just pinch that idea 😉

Loving your bedroom makeover Jen.
Personally I love a Luxe drape and sheer curtain.
Your bedroom has lots of natural light coming through and the positioning and styling of the chest of draws look great. It would be a shame to interrupt this with drapes, so for me I’d be installing a good quality blind.

Hi Jen, could you please tell me what the greenery on your bedside and chest is? I love it. You’re bedroom is lovely, Brendan has done such a good job 🙂 xx

This is a silly question I’m sure- but I’m in LOVE with all things that are this bed. So pretty. But I cannot seem to find the link to the bedding itself? Would you mind sharing where you got the bedding? Also, is the main bedding (comforter) gray or navy? Thanks so much! So beautiful!

I think the Navy one would be gorgeous. I’m so in love with this bedroom :). Thank you for getting back to me!!!

So my bedroom is last on my renovation list because simply… I’ve run out of cash! There’s peeling paint, aluminium windows, an old noisy fan, old blinds – generally it’s a disaster compared to the rest of the old Queenslander I’ve been renovating (check out #myoldqueenslander on insta) I WOULD LOVE some funds to kick start some passion for completing this project because I seriously think I’ll rest more peacefully in a peaceful bedroom 😉 Your room is stunning, and making me think I’ll need to be introducing some navy into my bedroom too….

Hi Jen,

I just found this post on pinterest and it is amazing! May I ask where you got your bed from? The frame? I am looking for something similar.
Thanks!
