Obus clothing brand’s studio transformed by west elm

The fashion studio of cult Melbourne fashion label Obus was transformed recently by the talented team at west elm. And what was formerly a basic white room is now a medley of terracotta and pink that much better reflects the brand known for its smart tailoring, vibrant colours and statement prints.

AFTER studio. A much more inspiring space!

The naturally bright room was repainted with Haymes Paint and a gorgeous burnt orange shade now adorns the fireplace. The centrepiece of the room, the meeting table remains but it’s been refreshed with a variety of different seating options including leather dining chairs and stools custom upholstered in Obus El Castillo print fabric. A terracotta rug helps to define the space and a statement pendant light adds a fabulous touch of drama.

“Our west elm design crew created a space that’s as vibrant and bold as the print and pattern play that Obus creates. The brief was to create a space that’s hardworking – yet inspiring, and to incorporate existing pieces into the design,” says Angus Whyte, west elm’s vice president of country merchandising.

And while a mirror is essential for a fashion brand, the west elm metal framed arched floor mirror looks amazing in the studio, complemented by a west elm Bishop pedestal planter in midnight blue and some much-needed indoor plants.

A multi-tasking piece, the west elm Fulton bar cart takes on different roles depending on what is happening in the studio. It acts as a moveable fitting station when the in-house model is in the studio on a Monday but once Friday rolls around it’s the perfect post-work cocktail station. “I love the idea of pieces serving double-duty, so we stayed focused on making smart, simple additions that complement what was already in play,” says west elm visual lead Rhys Duggan.

Before & after: Fun makeover for drag queen’s room!

“The art of drag is to elevate and express another side of yourself, to really highlight all the special things that make you stand out, but on a heightened level. To be able to do the same for an interior space was an absolute joy and an incredible way to celebrate PRIDE,” says stylist Jono Fleming who performed a magic makeover on Sydney-based drag queen Vybe’s lounge room recently, in celebration of PRIDE month.

Vybe's lounge room
BEFORE Angus Roberts (aka Vybe) in his former lounge room

“Giving a room a makeover is a pretty standard brief, but to give a room a drag makeover is something I would have never expected! The brief was to bring in colour, fun, all the things you’d expect from west elm, but with a camp twist,” says Jono who introduced splashes of colour with the west elm velvet Bradford sofa, Illusionary rug and decorative pieces.

AFTER
AFTER So much fun! The west elm blue velvet Bradford sofa is a modern take on the classic Chesterfield

“I focused on celebrating Vybe’s personality. She’s vibrant, bold and beautiful – the makeover was about creating joy, as well as being a mirror of Vybe’s strength, creativity – she’s a force,” says Jono.

Vybe is otherwise known as Angus Roberts and the rooms strikes a delicate balance that complements both sides of his personality. “The bold, squared off blue sofa serves a more masculine aesthetic but the velvet combined with the pinks in the rug softens the palette and adds a feminine touch. The goal was to marry two sides of a personality into one cohesive space,” says Jono.

Vybe is loving her new room!
Vybe in her new lounge room: The west elm Illusionary rug adds a perfect pop of colour

A celebration of inclusivity, diversity and equality, the iconic PRIDE rainbow is a recurring theme in the room – from the LED coffee table light to the overall colour palette and Vybe’s denim jacket. “We’re celebrating PRIDE so the key was to use every colour in the rainbow! Being bold with colour takes a bit of a push sometimes but set against a neutral backdrop, it can really help make the colours pop and let the furniture do the talking. A bit of brass always adds a touch of glam to a space but you don’t need to go overboard, just a hint will work it’s magic,” says Jono.

And as for Vybe herself, she is rather enamoured with the new space. “I am in LOVE with the result – the space is warm, inviting, stylish and as camp as I am! I can’t wait to kick off my heels and get on the couch at the end of the day!” says Vybe.

A Sydney blogger’s light-filled and lovely IKEA kitchen

Photography by Lucas Boyd

We recently checked out blogger Rebecca Lowrey Boyd’s kitchen and loved it so much, we persuaded her to share all the details with us. You can check out more of Rebecca’s writing at Wee Birdy.

I never thought I would renovate our kitchen. When we bought our ‘70s modernist pole house on Sydney’s upper North Shore three years ago, I was a staunch defender of its wood-panelled walls and ceiling. While everyone peered around in the gloom, I felt like I was living in a little wooden cabin in the the bush.

Why renovate?

After three months of living with our kitchen, the charm of the timber-lined space wore thin. The darkness of the kitchen was at odds with the rest of the house, which we’d since painted white and was bathed in light. More than anything, the clunkiness of the cabinetry was annoying. The drawers were heavy and frequently got stuck, and everything felt disorganised and messy. The overhead cabinets dividing the kitchen and living room made the room feel dark and closed in.

Why IKEA?

We knew a stone benchtop was out of the question because we have two poles going through the benchtop. The only option was timber so we could cut around the poles like a jigsaw. For a flatpack option, IKEA appealed because of the budget-friendly cabinetry and oak benchtops. We’ve got a Scandi-style home and it’s easy to get the Scandi look with IKEA. Finally I was drawn to the soft-closing, deep drawers that are so much more expensive in a custom-made kitchen.

Big changes

We removed the overhead cupboards that hung over the benchtop, which opened up the space and allowed the light from the living room to flood the kitchen. We also painted the dark timber panelling white in Dulux Natural White.

Benchtops

IKEA’s AKERBY worktop in oak (no longer available but there are similar).

Cabinetry

White IKEA FAKTUM cabinets (now called METOD).

Splashback

Hand-made ceramic subway tiles with black grout. We loved the organic look and the wavy surface imperfections. It gave our flatpack kitchen a more handcrafted, customised look.

Sink and tapware

The DOMSJÖ double bowl sink completed the relaxed Scandi-style look, which tied in with the rest of our house. We’d like a black kitchen tap but for now we’ve got an ELVERDAM tap (we love the pull-out spout for rinsing dishes).

Appliances

IKEA SVAVANDE ceiling-mounted extractor hood.

Lighting

We spray-painted IKEA’S white RANARP pendant lights black, and hung them over the working area of the benchtop. We also ran LED strip lighting under the bottom cupboards. It gives the space a soft glow at night, which is great when we have the TV on in the next room.

Mini vertical pole gardens

Our home is filled with plants and the kitchen wasn’t going to be the exception, so we painted the poles white and turned them into mini vertical gardens with Little Urban Farmers’ hanging gardens planters.

Worst thing we did

We orginally went with IKEA’s recommended tradesperson. We ended up having to rip out the benchtop and start again.

Best thing we did

Hire our builder, Matthew Blackmore. He carefully cut around our poles and joined the new IKEA oak benchtops seamlessly with a biscuit-joint, held together with benchtop clamps and wood glue. (The first tradie butt-jointed the benchtop together with Sikaflex and the finish was messy.

Our tradie dream team

Builder: Matthew Blackmore 0499 997 375

Painter: Joey Neukam 0435 162 240

Matt Blackmore’s top 3 IKEA timber benchtop tips

  1. If you’re joining together IKEA timber benchtops, ask your carpenter to make a biscuit joint and hold it together with benchtop clamps and wood glue.
  2. Use kitchen grade benchtop oil and give your benchtop three generous coats of oil with a second sand.
  3. It’s worth choosing the IKEA solid timber benchtops instead of the timber veneers, as the woodchip can disintegrate around the cut-outs to the sink and it can get black mould. If you do get a timber veneer, use the end strip to protect around the pieces which are exposed to the sink.

Shaynna Blaze’s top tips for your kitchen and bathroom update

With over 20 years’ design experience behind her, Shaynna Blaze needs little introduction. We asked the award-winning interior designer and The Block judge, to share some of her best tips for updating your kitchen and bathroom.

Know your reason

The kitchen is the heart of the home, but the bathroom is now an oasis. There has been a big movement towards having beautiful bathrooms and laundries. Upgrading these rooms can also get expensive very quickly, so it is important to know the reason behind your renovation.

“It’s not just about the kitchen anymore. When you’re spending a lot of money on fixtures such as stone and cabinetry in more than one room, you need think about why you are renovating,” says Shaynna. “Are you renovating to add value, or is this your forever home? Knowing the answer will mean the difference between adding a simple stone overlay and building from the ground up.”

Picture the space in use

We all know the importance of the working triangle in the kitchen, but what else do you use your kitchen for? If you love to cook with a whole bunch of different kitchen gadgets, then you need to allocate bench space and cabinetry for them. If your kitchen doubles as a home office space you could have drawers designated for paperwork.

“Everybody has their own lifestyle, and the kitchen has evolved beyond a simple room for preparing food. Is yours a social stop for people while you are cooking? Is this where your kids do their homework? You need to think about how the layout works with these other elements.”

Use lasting trends, not fads

When picking style trends, keep in mind that kitchens and bathrooms should last between five to 10 years. Look at the big picture, and go for trends that are long term and functional.

“Stone and marble benchtops are going to be around for years to come. When picking your cabinetry colours, make sure you are happy to live with them for the next 10 years. Otherwise, use overhead lighting to spruce up the space – it’s cheaper and easier to change later down the track.”

When it comes to bathrooms, don’t be afraid to go bold. “All white tiles are beautiful but boring. Think Moroccan, Art Deco, Art Nouveau – it’s all about capturing that ‘boutique hotel experience’.”

Shaynna also suggests staying away from the current (over)use of black and rose gold, as well as the industrial vintage trend. Opt for gunmetal or aged brass tapware instead. “Rose gold is one of those things that you wouldn’t put in unless you absolutely love it. If it’s your signature style then go for it. Very strong colours like green and navy will definitely be in for a while, but make sure you love them before using them in your kitchen or bathroom refresh.”

Stick to your budget

Whatever your budget, it is possible to upgrade your kitchen and bathroom in style. Shaynna suggests upgrading the look and the feel of a space when renovating on a budget. Changing the layout of the kitchen will push costs up, so be sure to keep plumbing and wiring in the same place.

“Focus on the things people touch the most. Overlay your benchtop with stone; change the position of the sink; repaint your doors; and choose good quality handles. These things will add instant value with minimum fuss.”

If you are working from the ground up, think carefully about your appliances. “People look at brands all the time and want everything to match. This can be a surefire way to blow your budget. Take a look at what you use the most and splurge on that, while opting for something a little down the budget line for the rest.”

The same thing applies to the bathroom; like the handles in the kitchen, tapware should be your priority. “A stone benchtop with a basic laminate underneath will work wonders. Have one feature tile wall and use budget tiles for the other areas. Or you could also just tile the wet area rather than all the walls to save money.”

Shaynna’s newest role sees her as a brand ambassador for Granite Transformations. Her favourite products include their unique tiles and the new Marble Collection which has all the beauty of marble with the added benefit of being heat resistant and non-porous. “Granite Transformations enable renovators to revamp their kitchen and bathroom by working with the existing surfaces and cabinets, for a proportion of the cost of a complete demolition and rebuild.”

Love kitchen and bathroom tips like this? There’s plenty more where that came from.

Real Reno: Monochrome bathroom makeover

Relaxing in the bath has never been more enjoyable for a Victorian family who for $12,000, have completely transformed their beige bathroom into a bold, industrial masterpiece.

“The main black tiles for the floor and bath have a rustic charm about them which adds some texture to the room. The larger tiles are paired with bold black and white marble mosaics in a chevron pattern which frames the window and adds so much personality to the little space,” said designer Fiona Parry-Jones whose brief was to transform the small bathroom into an interesting and bold space for guests and family to use.

“I then added some simple subway tiles to lighten the walls and compliment the feature tiles. The vanity is a gorgeous walnut veneer that adds warmth to the monochromatic room.”

Homeowner Anna Smith is thrilled with the cosmetic makeover which took six weeks and also included a new mirror, bath and tapware. “The new tile colour is really modern and makes the house feel much fresher and newer when walking past the bathroom.”

The black and white tiles are now her favourite feature, although they did prove a little tricky to lay. “The biggest challenge for the tiler was mitering an edge for the window reveal in the chevron tile,” said Anna.

After

The subway tiles were the biggest bargain along with the custom timber veneer vanity which according to Anna “wasn’t too expensive and came up really well.”

As for advice for other would-be renovators considering a bathroom makeover, Anna says “when using small tiles as a feature wall, make sure it’s a wall that doesn’t have any external corners – keeps things simple!” Anna also recommends finding “trades that you feel comfortable with rather than picking the cheapest and listen to what advice they offer. Also seek recommendations and referrals off friends, family and workmates.”

How to: Beautify your bathroom on a budget

Your dream bathroom renovation can quickly turn into a budget nightmare which is why it is often left at the bottom of the to-do list. The good news is that even if your bathroom does look tired and out of date, it can likely be easily salvaged with a quick cosmetic enhancement you can do yourself.

White Knight and Cherie Barber from Renovating for Profit, share three simple ways to beautify your bathroom on a budget:

Update your 70s bathroom tiles: “When your budget doesn’t extend to replacing tiles or professional resurfacing, roll up your sleeves and do it yourself,” says Cherie. “Tile paint is designed to give dated ceramic tiles, especially those colourful, embellished tiles from the 60s and 70s, a new lease of life.

“Look for one that’s been developed specially to adhere to tiles, such as White Knight Tile Paint, which also has built-in antibacterial properties that keep out mould and mildew. The high gloss finish can be tinted to 1000s of colours, so you can create virtually any colour for your bathroom. Be sure to use White Knight Tile & Laminate Primer and read the preparation instructions carefully.”

Rejuvenate your bathroom cabinets: “Dealing with a vanity that’s seen better days? The easiest fix, if they’re structurally in sound condition, is to paint the existing cabinets with White Knight Laminate Paint. It’s an easy DIY job and a great way to update a look for less than $100 in paint and sandpaper. Just replace your old cabinet hardware with stylish new handles to complete the look,” says Cherie.

White Knight Laminate Paint is a specialist paint designed to give dated laminate and melamine surfaces a new lease of life. It can also be tinted to 1000s of colours.

More quick hints & tips

  • Have fun with the colour and pick one that suits your individual style.
  • If you are going for a statement, create one wall of colour and paint the rest of the tiles a crisp white.
  • Use strong colours to replicate the look of a border or feature tile.
  • Don’t skimp on your brushes as they can make a big difference to the quality of the finish.
  • Use a brush to cut in around corners and fittings then use a high quality micro fibre roller over the remainder of the tiles. It is easy to manoeuvre and will deliver a great result.
  • Don’t skip the prep. It is needed for the paint to adhere to the tiles.
  • Use masking tape and a drop sheet to prevent paint from going on areas you don’t want it to.
  • Have lots of rags handy for cleaning.
  • Use White Knight Grout Pen to re-create fresh new grout lines on painted tiles.
  • Dirty taps make the bathroom feel grubby so make them sparkle with some white vinegar and a micro cleaning cloth.

My bedroom makeover + win a $1,000 west elm voucher for yours!

Sponsored by west elm

JenBishop_web_jacquiturk-1

We recently bought our first home in Sydney and have been slowly but surely adding our touches to it. The biggest job is a full bathroom reno and we’ve just locked that down so you can follow its progress in the new few months! Onto less involved projects, and I was keen to make the most of our beautiful master bedroom. It’s spacious and light-filled with two windows, and is definitely the largest bedroom Damian and I have ever had.

JenBishop_web_jacquiturk-4

When we moved from our last place, I got ruthless at chucking out what I didn’t need or love. Bed, drawers and desk aside, it was a pretty blank canvas in the bedroom. We had it painted (Resene’s Black White) before we moved in, and installed new floors (natural oak laminate from Darren Palmer’s Provincial Lane range for Carpet Court) and it was just crying out for those extra layers of warmth, texture, colour and interest. I couldn’t think of a store I’d rather team up with to transform it than west elm as I pretty much love everything they do, so when they asked me, I leapt at the chance to work with them to turn my bedroom into a grown-up sanctuary (and the one place we try and keep the baby’s toys out of)! I’ve also recently moved a secretaire desk into the bedroom and when our part-time nanny starts, I plan on sometimes hiding in there to work!

JenBishop_web_jacquiturk-12

Their Design Services stylist, Brendan Nash, asked me what sort of look I was after before providing a mood board. I immediately loved almost everything on it, so after making a few tweaks, I left it all in his capable hands until makeover day! It was so exciting to have a professional style my bedroom; what a treat!

Regular readers will know my favourite colour is navy, which is convenient for a couple’s room because it’s nice and unisex! I also love gold accents and have them throughout our home, from my sofa legs to cabinet handles, accessories and so on. I wanted the room to feel calm and cosy, conducive to both relaxing and sleeping and focusing to write at my desk.

JenBishop_web_jacquiturk-6

I think you’ll agree, he nailed it! I absolutely love our new room and have found myself going to bed early a lot because I’m so keen to hang out in there! I also swear my bed is more confortable thanks to its new linen, although I’m not sure if this is in my head or the reality?! I’m also a definite convert to the top sheet, something I have never seen the point of having before with a doona! With winter drawing in, it was the perfect time to transform this space into a warm and inviting boudoir!

JenBishop_web_jacquiturk-11

I love the layered rug look (something I wouldn’t have been brave enough to try myself) and while I don’t think I’d have picked the bedsides myself, they’re a surprise hit! I love the texture and warmth added by the reclaimed timber, but the white lacquer is modern and light and easily wipe clean. I love the roomy drawer to hide away all those essentials, and the space underneath for books and mags.

It was a real luxury to have my bed made to look like one out of a magazine spread and I watched Brendan and his colleague Naomi Young carefully, making mental notes. I absolutely love the feel and laid back luxe look of linen but had never thought of choosing it in navy before, always playing it safe with white. I really love the colour injection in this room. Cleverly, the only touches of pink are in the one cushion and the flowers, so if I want to change the pink to a different accent colour down the track it’ll be really easy (and let’s face it, everything goes with navy!).

If you have a little bedroom envy (and frankly, I couldn’t blame you!), then listen up, because west elm are giving you the chance to win a $1,000 voucher to spend on goodies for your own home. Simply enter using the form below by midnight Sydney time on 25 May 2016.

Bahar Etminan shares her home’s glamorous transformation

Photos by Susan Papazian

When Bahar Etminan viewed her Art Deco apartment in 2013, she immediately fell head over heels, and it’s a good job too, as it needed a lot of love! After consulting her friend and mentor, real estate agent John McGrath (it’s not what you know, right?), she made a full price offer. “I literally fell in love with my home.”

2Papazian_151113_1904

The glamorous but grounded working mother, who owns fashion, beauty and lifestyle site rescu.com.au, just published her first book. Rescu Me is subtitled ‘the makeover guide for a life more fabulous’ so it’s fitting there’s nothing ordinary about her chic Sydney home. But not before it had its own makeover!

9Papazian_151113_1933

The block of six 1930s units had been owned by one family since they were built and eventually sold off one by one over five years. “My apartment was nearly original 1930s condition and was being used as a group flat. It needed to be stripped out, rewired, re-plumbed, repainted, new floors, gas in the fireplace and a bathroom update.” Two months later, she and daughter Lilly moved in. “The transformation has been remarkable without losing its Art Deco charm. I wanted to leave the period features absolutely intact but make the apartment more comfortable for modern life.”

A lover of vintage, Bahar has collected her furniture over the years. “Each piece is special and has dazzled me at some point. Even modern pieces I have bought have a vintage vibe. I’m not a minimalist type of person so modern and new don’t suit my style. I also bought the apartment when my daughter was three, so I was looking for a family home; a place that was comfortable, livable and not too precious.”

1Papazian_151118_1880

Her favourite pieces are two cabinets she bought with the guidance of friend Jason Parlett from an antique shop in Glebe. “He had them totally restored and painted black for me. We go ‘trinkateering’, a term we coined for going shopping for trinkets! Some trinkets are bigger than others!” Other treasured possessions are her impressive bedhead and side tables from D’Cotta; new but with a vintage feel.

14Papazian_151116_1986

As Bahar works the eclectic look so very well, I couldn’t resist asking her for her tips: “I think colours and shapes have to work together even if periods and fabrics are not so matchy-matchy. I think where you place things can also really make a difference. I had the apartment feng shui’d by a master and she taught me a lot about the importance of where seats, beds and objects are placed. Luckily, I didn’t have to move much but I did tweak a few details and I think it made a difference to the flow and how we use each space.

“I like to mix up a few grown up pieces with things that feel feminine and fun. I also like to flip the rules on what should go where. I have a zebra print hide on the floor of my formal dining room and black wingback chairs in my sun room, which overlooks the harbour. I have a mix of cane, wood and velvet in the living room but the colours and the shapes all work.”

7Papazian_151113_1984

While Bahar doesn’t apologise for her home being feminine, she has been careful not to go overboard. “I decorated the home for my daughter but I like earthy tones, black and wood so there is nothing chintzy. My daughter’s favourite colour is blue and I never used to have anything blue at all, but now I have blue art, blue in my upholstery and blue decorative objects here and there. I think it’s wonderful to create an environment that reflects places you’ve been, people you love and how you see yourself.”

10Papazian_151113_1863

Vintage poster art is clearly a weakness, with Bahar loving the “vibrancy, joyfulness and instant glamour” it brings to a room. She also loves photography and recently bought two Slim Aarons photographs.

16Papazian_151113_1779

Lilly’s room goes to show that a child’s room doesn’t have to be full of plastic or garish colours to be fun and inviting. “I wanted her to have a beautiful room she’d enjoy playing in and felt fun and chic. Her room is actually quite dark so I’ve tried to lighten up the furnishings and added lots of colour.”

4Papazian_151113_1831

The rare deco chair was an eBay find, the ceramic wings a first birthday gift (which Bahar secretly wants on her own room) and the vintage poster, bought for herself years ago, then put it in Lilly’s nursery when she was born. “It’s a girl riding a motorbike. The decor will grow up with her. I never did have a traditional nursery of pink and white.”

5Papazian_151113_1817

On the subject of living with little people when you have lots of nice things, perhaps unsurprisingly, Bahar doesn’t believe in child-proofing your life. “Lilly understands what she can and can’t touch, which rooms are for play and which rooms are to keep tidy. I would say that if you can afford a play room where all the bright and crazy toys can go, I’d do that. The toys make me crazy!”

Living on the same street as the Prime Minister, Bahar and Lilly certainly feel very safe with bonus round the clock security! “We have a lovely little beach across the road, two beautiful parks, two yacht clubs and absolute peace and quiet. I do sometimes miss the buzz of cafes and shops at my doorstep. Having previously lived in The Elan, The Wharf at Woolloomooloo and Rockwall Apartments, I do also sometimes miss having concierge and the facilities of a modern apartment complex like a pool and lifts.”

While Bahar believes you should buy the best bed you can possibly afford and it’s worthwhile splurging on a beautifully made couch, decorative objects can be collected along the way and there’s nothing wrong with a few bargain buys in the mix.

3Papazian_151113_1891

Rescu Me is published by Harlequin and available from all good book stores and online. It’s full of practical insight and advice from the best experts in health, relationships and wellbeing, finances and career, fashion and beauty.

Super Amart for cute homewares: who knew?!

Sponsored by Super Amart

OK, who knew about this and has been keeping it from me? Super Amart has some cute and affordable homewares and I recently got to discover them. Armed with $200 to do a little bedroom refresh, I went shopping.

20150817_162530_HDR

I LOVE orchids but I always kill them within two weeks which is an expensive fail. There are some great fauxs out there including this beauty from Super Amart. At $69.95 I thought it was a great buy but please note they are currently on sale for just $39.95!

My favourite purchase however has to be the timber Raintree lamp, which looks a lot more expensive than its $64.95 price tag. This neutral number looks great in any room. I can’t decide whether or not to move mine to the kitchen as it seems to suit there really well too!

20150819_114042_HDR

One of my top tips for buying bargain homewares that look expensive is to choose simple shapes and lines, neutral colours and matt textures, like this linen-look lampshade. Avoid the shiny at all costs, my friends!

Likewise, you can’t go wrong with classic colours like those in the two cushions I picked for my bed, which were 24.95 and $29.95. I do love a bargain!

Super Amart have everything for your bedroom from the bed, mattress and rug to linen, lamps and finishing touches. You can shop online with Super Amart but you’ll find a much bigger range in store. Also, note you can’t get homewares items delivered but you can buy them online and pick them up at your nearest store for free.

Disclosure: As well as paying for this post, Super Amart gave me $200 to shop with them and write about my experience. All views are my own.

Interiors Addict at home: our new outdoor relaxing space

This post is sponsored by IKEA

SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES
My new look deck, complete with lounging AND dining areas

We recently moved into our first house in Sydney. While the huge deck that runs the length of said house seemed fantastic at first, having come from an apartment with a small, square balcony, we didn’t have much to fill it. Our Weber Baby Q still looks very lost and sorry for itself! We rushed out and bought a cheap and large dining solution (who has money when they’ve just moved, right?) at IKEA which gave us a taste of the range and value on offer. We opted for two lots of the ASKHOLMEN table and four chairs ($149 each) and put them together, which gave us a long, solid timber dining set for eight for less than $300! I know!

But our massive deck (first world problems) still looked empty and we really wanted a nice, cosy, outdoor-room type, relaxing space for morning coffees and lazy Sundays with friends. I wanted to be able to walk outside the back door and slump into something comfy on a nice afternoon. So when IKEA offered to help me out with some furniture, I couldn’t refuse.

I started by looking online for inspiration and quickly settled on the ARHOLMA modular lounges which have a million options, from a neat two-seater which would fit a balcony (and comes in two pieces so could actually get up stairs!) to something, well, as big as you like. You basically buy units of it, and corners, and make an L-shape, U-shape, or just a regular lounge shape from two seats and up. We went for a two-seater and a slightly larger four-seater L-shape to sit opposite it for a nice social setting. We mixed things up a bit by using a much treasured vintage, marble-topped coffee table bought on eBay years ago (which doesn’t work in our new lounge room indoors) and I really love how it looks. It cost me $60 so I’m not too precious about how it fares outside and it kind of adds to its character!

Now I love a spot of reading outside on a balmy evening!

There is a matching coffee table available for ARHOLMA however. Well, it’s actually a unit which can be the L part of an L-shape lounge or you can buy the glass top and make it a table. Again, flexibility wins!

I love neutrals outside. Let nature do the talking and make the colour, I say. How about you? If you’re the same as me, Into the Fold have some fab monochrome outdoor cushions.

When you think about it, it makes sense that IKEA, with their European heritage, design plenty of outdoor furniture for small spaces and balconies. Although we’re definitely a nation of outdoor entertainers in Australia, it can be hard to find solutions for tighter spaces and there are no shortage of apartment dwellers, alongside those lucky enough to have a spacious back yard. IKEA has both covered.

I really love this IKEA solution for small balconies

Amanda Grant, IKEA’s sales leader for outdoor furniture, says alongside its European background, one of the brand’s biggest advantages when it comes to outdoor furniture is its vast experience in indoor furniture. “We have an amazing range around different style preferences and price points, from basic modern to more traditional, to suit different lifestyles and wallets.” There are plenty of larger, more substantial dining and lounging solutions if that’s what you’re after.

IKEA has outdoor furniture for all tastes and budgets, from the smallest balcony to the largest yard!
IKEA has outdoor furniture for all tastes and budgets, from the smallest balcony to the largest yard!

There’s a core range of outdoor available at IKEA year-round and then extra things are introduced around summer time. But from this year, for the first time, there’ll be new ranges added in July/August as well as February, which makes sense considering Australians only really stay inside for about two or three months of the year!

Amanda says while their outdoor dining range is already well known, they hope customers will come to look at them as an option for great lounging options as well.

Personally, I think the ARHOLMA is great value ( a three-seater sofa is just $412 for example) and so flexible. It’s good to know we can change it around at a later date or add to it if we move house etc. I’ll be honest with you, it is not easy to put together and requires serious patience (lucky husband and brother-in-law got this job!) but it does all go together in the end, no missing parts, just fiddly! And that, in my opinion, is the price you pay for such good value. You can’t have it all! They do offer a paid for assembly service or I’d suggest trying Airtasker for someone to do the job for you as an alternative.

We also picked the cute timber ASKHOLMEN (tying in with our existing dining set) table ($39) and two chairs ($30 each) for a shady spot under a tree at the bottom of the garden beyond the deck.

And there are many other finishing touches available for your yard, deck or balcony too, from solar and LED lighting to hardy outdoor plants to sun shades (parasols and gazebos), planter boxes and lanterns.

Something you might want to check out is the great value instant flooring, perfect for disguising an ugly old concrete balcony floor in minutes!

We’re so happy with our new chillout area and feel we’ve gained a new outdoor room and some extra livable space. And while we still need a bigger barbecue, we’ll get there eventually!

Next stop: get tired-looking deck stained! The shame…

Until TOMORROW (22 January 2015) only, if you’re an IKEA Family member (it’s free to join) get a $50 voucher for every $250 you spend on outdoor lounging furniture. See website for terms and conditions.

A light and bright real kitchen reno

Homeowner: Jessie Harvey

Cost: $28,000

This family kitchen is the hub of the home and it’s hard to believe it was once dark, dingey, uninspiring and all kinds of brown! Homeowner and mum Jessie Harvey, tells us what they did.

201409Apr_6657

“We opted for a new kitchen as a makeover was not an option due to the condition of the old carcasses, which were literally falling apart! We installed Granite Transformations Trend Surfaces in Bianco Real on the main benchtop and Trend Surfaces in Venus Grey on the island benchtop. Gloss white doors opened up the space and a mirror splashback reflects the light and garden opposite the kitchen.” Add to the mix some IAG appliances and concrete effect wallpaper above the overhead cupboards to tie in with the grey island benchtop and create some texture, and the kitchen was given a whole new lease on life.

201409Apr_6653

“The space before was dark and closed in by walls so we wanted to open it up by removing two walls on either side of the kitchen,” Jessie explains. “It’s a much more open space now with the lounge and dining room opening to the kitchen. The removal of one of the walls also means there’s a view to the backyard, perfect for watching the kids outside while cooking.”

The family, including kids Bonnie-Willow (seven) and Banjo Lee (four), didn’t used to want to spend any time in the kitchen. “Now, I’m always in there,” Jessie says. “My kids are always doing homework, craft activities and anything messy really on the benchtops so it was essential to have surfaces that could allow them to do this without any staining or marking. The stone surfaces are amazing. The kitchen really is the centre of the house now.”

201409Apr_6663

Jessie is most happy with the amount of benchtop space she now has and loves the feeling of openness. “I can watch the kids in most spaces of the house from the kitchen now. I also love putting the pendant lights on over the island benchtop at night time as it creates such a relaxed and calm mood.”

And here are the before photos…

I don’t think I need to ask which you prefer!

Create your own unique upcyled furniture masterpiece

It’s an old and arguably tired adage, but the saying: ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ couldn’t be truer in the case of Feast Watson’s Re-Love Project. The initiative brought together eight designers who donated their time and expertise by ‘upcycling’ worn timber furniture items into unique, one-off designer pieces, all in the name of charity. For those new to upcycling, it involves turning used or useless furniture or other household items into something far more glamorous.

Simone Barter
Simone Barter

The project was an undeniable success, raising an admirable $5,000 for Salvos Stores Australia after Feast Watson agreed to match the funds raised from the eBay auction of the pieces earlier this month. James Fisher, brand manager at Feast Watson, notes that the success of the auction was a great reflection of both the strong support demonstrated by the public, and the delivery of such stunning products from the designers.

The project also shines some light on a craft form that, while popular, has yet to come into its own; with many seeing upcycling as a task best suited to smaller furniture pieces. Salvaging a larger item of furniture from the trash heap and showing it a little TLC, can in fact yield fantastic results and doesn’t require a lot of hard work.

According to Simone Barter (above), who fashioned a stylish chair and desk combination as part of Re-Love, it all starts with the search. And once you’ve purchased your piece, creating a masterpiece is as simple as planning, preparing and then achieving your vision.

Simone Barter before and after grouped image

Check out Simone’s step-by-step guide to achieving the look:

What you need:

  • Feast Watson Timber Primer
  • Feast Watson Stain & Varnish Black Japan Satin
  • Dulux Super Enamel in Tango Semi Gloss
  • Dulux Super Enamel in Malay Grey Semi Gloss

Planning:

Decide where the item will be placed in cohesion with the rest of the space and then choose a desk that will enable a large workspace. “Shop around and explore old and loved stores, you never know what you might find or what bargain you could stumble across!”

Preparation:

Prepare the wood by sanding it back, first with a coarse sand paper, followed by a finer one to smooth the timber. When selecting paint, “choose colours that will add a ‘wow’ factor – I chose Feast Watson Black Japan, Malay Grey and Pop of Tango from the Dulux range for a dramatic effect.”

Achieving your vision:

After applying the primer and allowing it to dry, remove all drawers and apply the first layer of stain and varnish, building up coats until the desired colour is achieved. For the chair, apply the Dulux Super Enamel in Tango Semi Gloss then allow to dry. When it comes time to paint, tape approximately 10cm from the bottom of each chair leg, evenly wrapped all the way around each leg. Then paint the bottom section of each chair leg. Remove the painters tape when the paint is completely dry.

Jen & Olivia’s Officeworks desk makeover

Brought to you by Officeworks

This is an interiors blog so when we hear the word makeover, we think: make something look nicer. So when Officeworks set us a makeover challenge for a workspace, what it would look like (colour scheme etc) were top of mind. That said, the neat freak in me knows that one of the keys to a tidy and good looking room is having a place for everything and everything in its place. So with this in mind, as I’m currently overseas in Europe, editorial assistant Olivia Shead (in Sydney) and I approached this as a team effort!

What better excuse than a new financial year to give your workspace a fresh new look and a declutter and organise? It’s like back when you were at school and you bought a new pencil case and notebook and vowed to only write it in your very best handwriting. And while even the prettiest desks will probably end up drowning in bits of paper eventually, it feels good to start with the best intentions!

For me personally, this time of year means scrabbling around for tax and super-related paperwork and wishing I had been more organised for the past 12 months. And being self-employed brings with it more responsibility for your own paperwork, like it or not! As well as keeping just about everything else together. There is no office cleaner (oh yeah, that’s me!) or in-house accountant.

I scoured the Officeworks website for pretty yet practical items to create a tidy, functional and good looking desk set up and Olivia set it up in her home workspace. Let’s face it, if you’re lucky enough (in our opinion) to work from home, being able to choose the less corporate items is a major bonus. While in my life as an employee and manager I often visited my local Officeworks to buy essentials, my boss would definitely have frowned if I’d returned with everything in hot pink. Well, now I’m my own boss, looky what happened!

I decided on a stylish scheme of hot pink and aqua with some white to stop it getting out of control. I already knew about the brand’s Philosophy range which is always full of on-trend stationery and desk items, but was delighted to discover the Martha Stewart range too. Who knew?! Officeworks are full of surprises. Their new furniture range contains some good looking, affordable finds such as the Kirby Heartwood Desk (very Scandinavian, no?) for just $163, and the retro-style Hummingbird Evoque Slide Out Desk for $167.

What we bought:

(*The cat is the journalist’s own).

While our makeover was very stationery, desk and fashion-focused, Officeworks has everything you need for a home office, whether it’s a corner of a student’s bedroom or something altogether larger and more functional. Need a new laptop, printer, laminator or whiteboard? Tick, tick, tick, tick! All of this and more is available at Officeworks, alongside their many services, such as printing, easy parcel delivery (saving you from queuing at the post office) and access to tech support. If you’re working from home we assume you don’t have the luxury of a meeting room for clients. Did you know many Officeworks stores offer this too? I had no idea!

If you like a bright and cheerful desk like ours, check out this video with tips on how to add colour to your workspace:

Of course, you want to see the less pretty before photo too, don’t you? Here you go…

WIN

If this has left you inspired to master your workspace and you’d like the chance to win a $100 Officeworks voucher to get you started, comment below, answering the question: how will you master your workspace? Entries close 5pm on Tuesday 12 August 2014. Terms & conditions.

Rent My Style: Laura Koomen’s balcony makeover

Here at Interiors Addict, we just don’t buy into the idea that rental homes have to look bland or lacking in style and personality. Rent My Style is dedicated to showcasing the best of our readers’ rental home decorating efforts.

Today, we’re sharing Laura Koomen’s cute balcony makeover in Melbourne. Her one-bedroom apartment has been home for three years. “One of the best things I did was put a floating wooden base covered in AstroTurf down on my balcony,” she explained. “The floating base was important as it is one of those old concrete tub style balconies that fill with puddles when it rains! Also, I had a wooden bar built that sits atop the balcony edge.

IMG_2404

“It’s been transformed from concrete box to my little oasis! The rest of my apartment is lovely too and I think the key for me has been about getting the right size furniture for the right space, not overcrowding and keeping a consistency to every room.”

We love how Laura’s inexpensive additions have made all the difference, and everything can be easily removed when she moves out (although we think her landlord should pay her to keep them!).

House Rules RENO ADDICT

Post House Rules reveal chat with winners Candy and Ryan

With the first House Rules elimination occurring earlier this week, the pressure was well and truly on! In just four days, the five remaining teams were tasked with what seemed like an impossible challenge: transforming an entire Sydney unit each, in just four days.

NSW
Candy and Ryan

Last night’s episode saw the conclusion of the challenge, with NSW team Candy and Ryan taking home the win. They managed to score their first elusive 10 from judge and Home Beautiful editor Wendy Moore and a nine from fellow judge and architect, Joe Snell.

“I can’t even put into words how it felt to get that 10,” says Ryan. “Candy and I tried for so long, one thing we really wanted to achieve in the competition was a perfect 10 and to be the second team to do it was awesome. We pushed so hard and it felt like for so long as well and to get it for Monica’s apartment… we’re rapt.”

Before: Kitchen

Assigned with the job of making over the home of single, insect-loving Monica, most of the house rules were easy to follow – bar the fact that she wanted an insect theme! “Candy and I got really lucky this week, the house rules Monica wanted were edgy and eclectic and that’s really similar to the style we like ourselves,” explains Ryan. “However, the insect component was the total opposite! We had no idea what direction we were going to go with that. We knew we had to get insects in somewhere and we thought the best way to introduce them was with some creative wallpaper which we think really looked good in the end.”

NSW' UNIT_KITCHEN AFTER
After: Kitchen

Used to spending a week on a renovation and just working on one zone, the change-up in the format was a lot of pressure. “It was crazy. We thought seven days was tough but then to do a whole apartment in four, we were just so under pressure,” says Candy. “I think you could really see how hard it was and how stressful it was, especially for me. When we finished I just broke down, I was so relived it was over. I was exhausted.”

Before: Bathroom
Before: Bathroom

However, because of both the time limit and the budget, the challenge was presented as a makeover challenge rather than a full-scale renovation. “Our budgets were so tight we couldn’t go crazy replacing everything,” explains Candy. “We spent most of our money on the bathroom and completely re-did that. Then the rest was more cosmetic, painting things, adding extra furniture, that type of thing.”

While the makeover was no doubt one of their toughest experiences thus far, Ryan believes it was all worth it for the chance to give back: “It definitely felt great to give something back, but then it was really challenging cause the last thing we wanted to do was to give Monica an apartment she wasn’t in love with. So we really threw ourselves into this week and I think you could tell.”

The unit makeover challenge saw Candy and Ryan come in first with a total score of 19; followed by Adam and Lisa with a score of 15; Carole and Russell with 14; Maddi and Lloyd with 12; and Bomber and Mel with eight. Luckily for Bomber and Mel, they were saved from the expected elimination and instead they, and all the other contestants scores, will be carried over into the next phase of the competition: the 24-hour fix-up challenge.

House Rules continues Sunday at 6.30pm with the 24-hour fix-up challenge, where the remaining teams must return to their renovated homes and choose one zone to change. The reveals will be on Monday at 7.30pm when another team will be eliminated.

8 smart tips for designing the perfect kid’s bedroom

A bedroom makeover can be tricky. You have to consider theming, colour selection and personal style, as well as available space and budget considerations.

forty winks 2
Forty Winks Saturn Bunk

And when the bedroom you’re making over is your child’s, everything gets a whole lot more complicated!

Here are some top tips on creating a child’s bedroom that is not only a good place for sleeping, but for entertaining and working as well:

  1. When preparing for a makeover or update, it’s important parents include their child in the planning process in order for them to fashion their own individual style to create a room they’ll love spending time in.
  2. Encourage your child to choose a theme or colour scheme that is reflective of their personality and that they’ll love for years to come.
  3. Regardless of room size or budget, there are clever ways to update the bedroom without spending a fortune. If restricted by space, consider furniture or bed suites that feature clever inbuilt storage solution for those tighter room dimensions.
  4. There are various bed options available that will sleep a child from their first ‘grown up’ bed through to their teens. This means that they can maintain the same bed as they grow and will save money over the course of their development.

  5. Bunk beds have become increasingly popular over the past 12-to-18 months with an even greater variety of styles and options available, including bunks with work stations and added storage.
  6. Innovative products such as King Koil Breathe Active and King Koil Breathe Energy mattresses, provide chiropractic support for your child. Endorsed by the National Asthma Council Australia, they also feature breathable technology for added protection.
  7. For those children that suffer from bed wetting, Protectabed is an easy to fit mattress protector. It’s ideal in any situation requiring waterproof protection including bed wetting and toilet training. It also features hygienic and anti-allergy technology that is absorbent and breathable.
