Stylist tips: injecting city slicker style into coastal homes

Jason Granziera, in-house stylist at Lounge Lovers, shares his tips to inject some city clicker style into a relaxed, coastal home.

Sofia boucle 3 seat sofa

Chic, coastal and classic

A timeless and classic look can be attained with a pale and creamy colour palette. This palette has been centre stage for years, combining texture and occasionally the element of colour. Like the white sands and blue waves of Australia’s coast, subtle pops of colour and textural statement pieces can work beautifully together to create an inviting interior. For a neutral, think a boucle lounge which offers shape, style and a quality finish to seamlessly intertwine city and coast.

Ground, then amplify

Draw inspiration from our country’s mountainous terrain, pairing polished design with natural materials serves as the perfect base to stylistically balance your place. An oak coffee table will bring in some earthy energy while adding a deep green will make your environment appear sleek and bright.

Cafe dining chairs

Lean into differences

Much like the coast’s relaxed and beachy vibe with its bustling after dark scene, one of the best ways to combine styles is through contrast. Be even more bold by creating a clear distinction between aesthetics with one item. Dining chairs mixing rattan with various shades of oak represent a hybrid of coastal and Scandi style, playing off texture, and light and dark shades to blend these two styles together.

Kojo shelf

Contemporary by the sea

An old favourite for a reason, rattan is synonymous with coastal feels. Pairing it with contemporary pieces make for an interesting and stylish addition to any home. Start minimal with a bamboo style shelf as a base, then integrate the city with accessories like modern vases, coffee table books, greenery and candles to create the perfect blend.

A personal touch in Deborah Hutton’s new coastal homewares range

Former international model and beloved TV personality Deborah Hutton has launched her own coastal inspired homewares range.

“I have a huge crush on coastal but that doesn’t mean it’s a style exclusive to beachsiders. The laidback feel of this collection looks beautiful anywhere. It’s coastal meets modern, and works with beachside, country or city living,” says Deborah. “The collection is relaxed luxury, easy on the eye, and ideal for mixing and matching to suit your style.”

The stylish collection is a true reflection of Deborah’s personal style, with luxurious bed linen, coordinating throw rugs and cushions, as well as towels, décor items, and tableware.

“I’m a big fan of muted tones and neutral palettes; think crisp whites, navy, stone and duck egg blues,” she adds. “The range is a true reflection of the things I love and looks right at home in my own house. I’ve collected beautiful pieces over the years and have incorporated elements of these into the range.”

Deborah says COVID has led to changes in the way many of us are living. Whilst the home has become a vital place of comfort and sanctuary, affordability is a definite consideration during these unprecedented times.

“I’ve designed the collection to accommodate these new ways of living so that someone can fit out a new house, and make it look effortlessly stylish on a budget.”

She’s particularly proud of the bed linen and towels. “The bed linen is so relaxed and inviting and the towels are luscious, large and absorbent and both are such great value. I think people will love them.”

The collection has been released nationwide through MyHouse. “I’m thrilled to welcome HOME with Deborah Hutton to MyHouse.” says Steven Lew, founder and chairman of Global Retail Brands. “As a much loved media personality with some serious style and interiors creds, Deborah is the perfect addition to our existing offer of stylish and great value homewares.”

1 room, 2 looks: at home with MasterChef’s Hayden Quinn

When you’re a busy couple juggling two demanding careers it can be challenging to find the time to make your home look its best. Such was the case for model turned cook, Jax Raynor and her partner, MasterChef favourite Hayden Quinn. Their beachside apartment had good bones and was full of natural light but it lacked the cosiness they craved at the end of a long day.

BEFORE

The solution? They called in Pottery Barn interior designer Rhys Duggan to help make the most of their sunny space. “We both love to cook and entertain so we asked Rhys to somehow open up the space, yet make it warm and inviting too,” says Jax.

The couple’s enthusiasm for the project was infectious so Rhys put together two looks for them to choose from: one, global oasis, to reflect their love of travel, and the other, island chic, that referenced the sand and surf not far from their front door.

AFTER Island chic

AFTER Global oasis

For both looks, Jax and Hayden’s existing large red vintage rug was kept and a smaller, lighter rug placed on top to introduce some brightness and add a luxe note of layering.

“We replaced their heavy, dark coffee table with glass-topped coffee and side tables with light metal frames to give an airy feel, and because they’re transparent they help to visually open up the space,” says Rhys.

Some plump, generously sized cushions were added to the sofa and as both Hayden and Jax had a healthy collection of indoor plants, Rhys decided to use them to create a focal point.

“We decorated a mantel in front of their living area, which moved the focus away from the TV and provided a space to display their favourite travel souvenirs,” he says. “Creating a focal point helps when you’re arranging a room layout as you use it as your central point of reference and then work everything else around it.”

With a small space it helps to use pieces that do double duty, like bar carts. The bulk of the time they can be used for storage – just pop some great looking baskets underneath – and then wheel them into place when entertaining.

Working to a colour palette that’s repeated in all areas of Jax and Hayden’s living space helped to unify the room making it look larger than it really is. For instance, Rhys replaced the couple’s timber dining chairs with upholstered chairs in a fabric that matched the sofa. The result being that your eye floats across the white sofa, walls and visually connect to the chairs.

AFTER dining

“The drinks trolley has to be one of my favourite touches,” says Hayden. “That and how the place just looks a whole lot bigger!”

“Now when I’m at home, I really feel at home,” says Jax. “It just feels more us.”

Walter G: two friends turning their grief into beautiful textiles

After experiencing the sad passing of their grandfathers at the same time, Genevieve Fennel and Lauren Bennett decided to leave the jobs they hated and start following their passion.

Both adoring textiles and with a stint in India under their belts, the best friends decided to launch textile business Walter G, a nod to their late grandfathers, Walter and George.

Fusing together the traditional art of hand block printing and natural dying with contemporary designs, Walter G offers a range of fabrics, cushions, table linen, lighting, aprons and tea towels that are timeless and relaxed. “Walter G’s range of artisanal textiles channel the relaxed vibe of coastal living, through pattern, fresh colour, texture and nostalgia. Timeless in both design and palette, they are designed to be mixed and matched to elevate an interior with both style and comfort.”

Using a majority of natural fabrics like linens and hand-woven cottons, all their products are 100% hand block printed, using either natural or environmentally friendly dyes and pigments; something the girls are very passionate about. “This is the kind of stuff that we love to put in our own homes – rustic, cosy, natural and pattern packed. There is just something about things that are made by hand, once you get accustomed to them, you can never go back to factory made.”

Their latest range Made in Japan, which is being launched during today’s Life Instyle, takes the rustic, cosy and natural feel the girls love so much and injects into it a Japanese-inspired edge. “We took a lot of inspiration from traditional Japanese kimono designs that we found in old Japanese woodblock paintings as well as old pieces of kimono fabrics that we have collected over the years. We have used a really rustic, neutral palette with a few hints of fresh citrus for summer. We are a little obsessed with citrus and grey/taupe at the moment. And of course our staple, indigo — the king of all colours. We have specifically made our table linen range quite indigo-heavy as they just wash out so beautifully, like an old pair of jeans!”
