Table linen: The latest looks & our favourite new finds

It’s no coincidence that the tablescape trend coincided with people spending more time at home. A fabulous way to transcend the every day, there’s something so lovely and nostalgic about properly dressing a dining table. And from wavy details to multicoloured check designs there’s nothing stuffy about the latest round of table linen.

Little Tienda: Based on the Gold Coast, fashion and homewares brand Little Tienda has just launched two new tablecloth designs – there’s a pink and melon green iteration as well as a zesty check. “I love to entertain and setting the table is a big part of creating a special night for guests. Lovingly hand-blocked by our team in India, each tablecloth is a work of art in vibrant and refreshing hues,” says Little Tienda founder Emily Dezentje. From $90.

In the Roundhouse: We are massive fans of this brand’s ever-expanding dinner plate line-up but its napery is next level too. And while the brand makes simple two-toned, multi-coloured linen napkin sets it’s the scalloped edged placemats and napkins that are really something special – they are available in a variety of hues. From $70.

Kip & Co x Jessica Nguyen: This collaboration is a match made in heaven. Created with Insta-famous cook Jessica Nguyen, the latest table linen from Kip & Co features two designs; a very fun chilli/tomato/vongole design as well as a bold check print. This collab has us longing for la dolce vita. From $29.

Aura Home: If plain table linen is more your thing you can’t go past the Aura Home collection of 100 per cent linen table cloths and napkins. There’s standard black and white options as well as seasonal hues including tobacco, clay, khaki and limestone. From $59.95.

L&M Home: From plain linen to stripes and hand block printed cotton designs, L&M home has a gorgeous line-up of pieces to dress your table. Most of it can be mixed and matched for a truly bespoke feel. From $75.

Everything’s on sale at Designers Guild: my top picks

Sponsored by Designers Guild

You know what they say about buying well and buying once? That’s why I always prefer, if possible, to buy great quality brands on sale rather than buy a lot of cheaper full price stuff which will show its cheapness and disposability in a few months’ time. So the good news is that Designers Guild, which I’d call a classic investment homewares brand, is currently on sale. ALL OF IT!

If you’d always wanted some bed linen, cushions, towels or other textiles from Tricia Guild’s iconic British (I’m not biased!) brand, there’s currently 25% off across the entire Australian online store. There’s a lot to choose from though, so I’ve tried to make it easier for you with a few of my sale highlights to get you inspired.

I’m crushing hard on the Hand Painted Pink Stripe table linen. I find I always have more dinner parties this chilly time of year and it’s nice to make a special effort. This also comes in less feminine blue and green colourways but you know me and pink! Just look at the perfect light crumple of the organic linen! From $52.50.

If you prefer plain linen, these mint Lario placements and napkins come in nine different colours. From $45 for four.

Speaking of pink and crumped (and my aversion to ironing!), check out this Biella linen in Peony and Camellia. I love how it’s reversible.  I’m a plain bed linen kind of girl but that doesn’t mean you have to stick to greys or white. This linen also comes in shades of green, blue, grey, red, purple and of course, white.

I have a cushion from this range and the linen is thick and gorgeous. From $37.50.

Next up, and still in the bedroom, I’m coveting this silk Chenevard silver and slate quilt. A quilt is a great investment as you can use it on its own in the hotter months and as an extra, good-looking layer on the bed in winter. This also comes in other colours and Designer’s Guild have many beautiful quilts to peruse.

Onto some more typically Designer’s Guild looks, there’ll be no denying where this statement Tulipa Stellata Fuchsia cushion ($157.50) or moodier floral Delft Flower Noir rug ($4260) were from!

Moving onto the Moselle Bath Robe, I personally always find it really hard to find a robe which is neither too skimpy or too big and fluffy. Waffle is the answer, and this one’s the perfect length and comes in loads of colours. I think it would be $176.25 well spent when you consider you’d  probably wear it every day. In 100% linen this will add a fun pop of colour to your bathroom too.

Even if you don’t need anything yourself, this is a great time to buy gifts for loved ones at a bargain price!

The sale won’t last forever so make sure you check it out now!

The history of decorating with Marimekko

By Julie-Ann Bigava

The name Marimekko has been synonymous with striking fabrics since 1949. Viljo Ratia and his wife Armi Ratia founded Printex, a small textile printing company in Helsinki, Finland. A woman of vision, Armi saw a big future for quality textiles and bold designs. She commissioned promising young artists to produce bold, colourful and hard-wearing fabrics for Printex.

In the 1950s, the bold prints were much admired but people did not quite know how to use them. They were too ‘out there’. The colours and designs were quite radical for the times but Armi was undaunted: the company staged a fashion show, with clothes designed by a well-known designer using the unusual fabrics.

Everything sold. On the day. And that was the start of Marimekko.

Be bold!

Marimekko fabrics are perfect for soft furnishings, particularly curtains. Made from natural fibres such as cotton and linen, they are hard-wearing and easy to launder with a little care.

We love the story of how the Lokki design came about as the artist observed the broad folds in a curtain drawn across a sunlit window, with the shadow-lines resembling waves on the water. This has become one of Marimekko’s best-known designs. Below is an example of curtains made out of Lokki fabric.

Scandinavian design is known for its clean, fresh, minimal lines. It is often abstract but always warm and inviting, never cold. The bright colours inspired by the outdoors and nature make any room feel homely and welcoming. Table linen, bed linen and big soft cushions of all sizes can transform the look and feel of any room with a minimum of effort.

Continuing Collection Home 8_72260_13

Marimekko designs don’t stop at fabrics. There is also a range of crockery and tableware with typically vivid designs. The Siirtolapuutarha print is used here on mugs and bowls as well as on fabrics. It depicts the abundance of an urban garden.

Marimekko fabrics are famous for their durability and extra wide widths, hence the fabrics functionality can be extended to home decor projects for your home that are prone to wear and tear. For example, have a look the irresistible bunch below…

The top cover is in the well known Unikko red. This classic was created in 1964, after Marimekko founder Armi publicly proclaimed a ban on flowers in Marimekko prints. Artist Maija Isola defied the order and designed a whole collection of floral patterns that were so fresh and unique that Armi ended up taking eight of them (thank goodness Maija was a rebel!). One of those Armi accepted was Unikko, the future icon of icons, now in several delightful, new shades.

Creations are not limited to curtains, cushions and table linen. Let your imagination run!

Homewares that bring the magic of travelling home + 20% off!

While trekking through the Sahara Desert on her gap year nine years ago, Harriet McMicking had an idea. One day, she told herself, she would start a homewares business that would bring the magic of travelling home. So seven years later she did just that.

“I thought about this dream day in and day out to the point I realised I had to take the punt,” explains Harriet. “It has taken me a long time to get the business up and running, but it’s the most rewarding thing I have achieved in my life.”

Forming TIPI interiors, the travel-inspired homewares range aims to encourage people to create an environment that reflects their travels, personal style and life story. “The furnishings I am developing are all inspired by travel. Just like those moments on the road that stay with you forever, the TIPI pieces will remind you of places you have once visited, places that you aspire to discover and the captivating beauty of artisanal work.”

With her debut collection including director chairs, deck chairs, stoneware, cushion covers, rugs and table linen (tablecloths, napkins and tea towels), all the pieces were inspired by the beauty of India. “We currently have two production teams in India. The table linen is blockprinted by hand in Sanganer and the furniture and rugs are all hand-made in Jodhpur. I love India but my aim is to expand the collection to cover other regions of the globe.”

Made for those who want to know the stories behind the stylish, artisan-crafted pieces, TIPI’s wares are designed and developed with a strong focus on heritage and craftsmanship. Through close connections with the artisan producers, TIPI is creating timeless boutique pieces for everyday living.

Walter G: two friends turning their grief into beautiful textiles

After experiencing the sad passing of their grandfathers at the same time, Genevieve Fennel and Lauren Bennett decided to leave the jobs they hated and start following their passion.

Both adoring textiles and with a stint in India under their belts, the best friends decided to launch textile business Walter G, a nod to their late grandfathers, Walter and George.

EN4A8724_NikkiTo

Fusing together the traditional art of hand block printing and natural dying with contemporary designs, Walter G offers a range of fabrics, cushions, table linen, lighting, aprons and tea towels that are timeless and relaxed. “Walter G’s range of artisanal textiles channel the relaxed vibe of coastal living, through pattern, fresh colour, texture and nostalgia. Timeless in both design and palette, they are designed to be mixed and matched to elevate an interior with both style and comfort.”

EN4A8749_NikkiTo

Using a majority of natural fabrics like linens and hand-woven cottons, all their products are 100% hand block printed, using either natural or environmentally friendly dyes and pigments; something the girls are very passionate about. “This is the kind of stuff that we love to put in our own homes – rustic, cosy, natural and pattern packed. There is just something about things that are made by hand, once you get accustomed to them, you can never go back to factory made.”

EN4A8870_NikkiTo
EN4A8686_NikkiTo

Their latest range Made in Japan, which is being launched during today’s Life Instyle, takes the rustic, cosy and natural feel the girls love so much and injects into it a Japanese-inspired edge. “We took a lot of inspiration from traditional Japanese kimono designs that we found in old Japanese woodblock paintings as well as old pieces of kimono fabrics that we have collected over the years. We have used a really rustic, neutral palette with a few hints of fresh citrus for summer. We are a little obsessed with citrus and grey/taupe at the moment. And of course our staple, indigo — the king of all colours. We have specifically made our table linen range quite indigo-heavy as they just wash out so beautifully, like an old pair of jeans!”
