Stylist secrets for warming up your home this winter

If there’s one thing that’s certain, layers of texture are essential when creating a cosy winter interior. From faux fur throws to velvet bed linen and heavy weight curtains, we caught up with the stylists at west elm and Pottery Barn Australia recently for their take on how to warm up your home this chilly season.

The living room
“Winter is about getting cosy on the couch and sleep-ins on rainy days. In the living room, adding cushions and throws with lots of texture creates warmth,” says west elm’s lead visual manager Rhys Duggan who loves using the brand’s Candlewick cushions and faux fur throws to achieve this look.

Pottery Barn Australia’s lead visual manager Ebony Quaid uses plenty of texture in winter too. “I like to load up on textiles in the living room. Add extra throws on the sofa and extra blankets on the beds – not only does it add warmth, but the layering creates a sense of visual warmth. Perfect for snuggling on the couch, I always opt for our faux fur,” says Ebony.

And layering can also mean literally laying things on top of one another as Ebony likes to do with rugs in her home. “It provides extra warmth underfoot and looks cool if you get the right combination,” says Ebony who believes you should never underestimate the power of window coverings in creating warm spaces either. “You can lock in a lot of warmth by hanging long, heavy curtains to cosy up large open areas.”

It’s not something that many people do on a regular basis but another way to warm up your home this winter is by shifting your furniture around to capture the season’s light. “My failsafe winter tip is – never be afraid of rearranging your furniture. You can shift key pieces away from draughty spots in the house to lap up the warm winter sun,” says Ebony.

The bedroom
When it comes to bedroom winter styling, changing the bedding is not only a practical necessity but it’s a good chance to change mix things up from an aesthetic perspective too.

“In the bedroom, layer like a stylist and use warm, soft fabrics like organic cotton and Belgian linen – both of which improve with age. Combine one of our lush velvet coverlets and blankets with your quilt cover to add extra layers of warmth and weight,” says Rhys who also recommends rugs made from natural fibres to inject warmth underfoot and lock heat into the home.

From lamps to candles Rhys also suggests using lights to create mood this winter. “It is a visual trick but having a few sources of light in the bedroom can switch your mindset from cold to gold. A bedside lamp is standard, but add some candles and it creates a cosy, luxe feel. Just don’t forget to blow them out before sleep!”

Real home: Stylist Briar Stanley overhauls lounge room

Online crystal purveyor Rachel Crethar, of Rock & Co, has been friends with stylist Briar Stanley since high school so when they teamed up with Pottery Barn to overhaul Rachel’s lounge room recently, it came together seamlessly. “I have known Briar since I was 13 years old, she is one of my best friends and I have always loved the eye she has for things. She also really gets my style, so I actually just gave her free reign! I wouldn’t have done this with anyone else, but it goes to show how much I trust her,” says Rachel.

“Working with such a good friend, who I know really well, was really nice. I like to think I ‘get’ her tastes and know her likes and dislikes, so pulling the look together for the room was relatively easy,” says Briar who brought more of Rachel’s luscious outdoor area into her everyday life.

Pottery Barn

Located in the inner-west Sydney suburb of Marrickville, Rachel and her husband purchased their home 11 years ago and now live in it with their two children and family cat. “When we bought the place, it needed to be completely gutted. I think we were a little naïve as to just how intense it would be. It took us a year in total, with six months of planning and spending weekends steaming off wallpaper and then the builders came in and finished it,” says Rachel who confesses there was very little left to spend on styling the house after the renovation.

Pottery Barn

“We hadn’t really updated the furniture from when we first moved in. With all the money being syphoned into the renovation, most of the pieces were hand-me downs from parents – it was definitely in need of an update! Now we are in our thirties I was looking for something that felt fresh and modern, but a bit more grown up than our twenty-something space. I love the way Pottery Barn felt a bit more sophisticated but also suited our inner-west Sydney home,” says Rachel.

Briar kept the renovation front of mind when styling the space and brought the outside in with a lovely mix of house plants and Pottery Barn wares. “The space had to be comfortable and practical, while being sympathetic to the colours and the finishes of the gorgeous renovation the family completed a few years ago. The house has a lovely flow out to a very sweet backyard, so I kept that in mind when selecting the furniture and decorative items from Pottery Barn, which have a definite ‘elegant’ vibe about them – a word I’d use to describe Rachel herself!’ says Briar.

After a busy career in media strategy, Rachel took time off to have two children before launching her business Rock & Co three years ago. “We sell crystals, books, essential oils and crystal infused beauty products, and we also run crystal introduction classes around Australia,” says Rachel whose favourite part of the lounge room makeover has synergy with her business. “My favourite piece is the coffee table because it displays some of my favourite books and crystals. I always love homes where you can walk in and see a person’s personality through their art and treasures,” says Rachel.

Before & after: Pottery Barn revamps tired lounge room

As the owner of Botanica Real Food, Brisbane’s wildly popular boutique salad shop, Alison Hutley’s days are long so when the weekend comes she loves nothing more than relaxing at home with her family. Thus, when Pottery Barn offered to make over her lounge room recently, she jumped at the chance. “We were given the opportunity to choose from the entire Pottery Barn store which was a dream come true!” says Alison.

“I wanted something relaxing, fresh and family oriented. I wanted the space to be calm and comfortable and to allow a seamless passage from the outdoors to the indoors, particularly given our lifestyle in Brisbane. We wanted to maximise the sunshine in our space!”

AFTER lounge room

Working with stylist Hayley Jenkin, the room was overhauled using a combination of old and new pieces. “Hayley combined our personal items with our favourite Pottery Barn choices to create a look and feel that’s uniquely ours and is a celebration of our family. It really is a collection of loved and new pieces,” says Alison.

AFTER lounge room

One of the most notable changes is the addition of a fresh new white couch. “The old dark leather couches made the room feel tired. Now the natural light just bounces off the sofa creating the illusion of more space. We get beautiful light in that space, but we didn’t seem to spend much time down there during the day before. It needed some love,” says Alison.

Artwork
New artwork and greenery lift the space

Some new artwork added a fresh new look too. “The main artwork is called ‘Garden Tales’ and is an original piece on paper by Jayfeather Art, an Australian artist. It was the perfect piece to bring the outside in and it worked brilliantly with the greenery that we added throughout the room. I loved how it worked with the blues in the rug and accessories, and how the frame worked with the terracotta tones in the room too,” says Hayley.

Hayley, a published creative director and stylist (and owner of the Sunshine Coast based Wholehearted Studio), relished the opportunity to transform the space. “My favourite part was seeing the Hutleys’ reaction to their new look living room. That was the best! Their positive feedback afterwards made the day such a highlight for me. As far as the styling went, I loved how the room took into consideration their personal style and tastes and included details that had meaning too,” says Hayley.

There’s still time to buy gifts to impress! We’ll help!

Sponsored by Williams Sonoma Australia

Not everyone smugly finished their Christmas shopping two weeks ago. Yes, I have those friends! The ones with the colour co-ordinated, tastefully understated wrapping… I always start off with the best intentions but life gets in the way. And this year, with newborn Charlie in tow, well, I had no chance did I?! Last weekend I could be found buying toys for Sebastian, pushing the pram (piled high because who has a spare hand for the basket?!) with one hand and jigging a crying baby in the other. I spent about five seconds choosing wrapping materials, grabbing whatever was closest and would fit in the aforementioned pram basket. Lucky Santa’s coming too, right?

So, because I know that there are other people out there with the best intentions, I’ve put together this handy guide of what to buy for all the usual suspects in your world. And the best news? You have until Friday to place your order for any of these and receive them by Christmas*! Plus, fill your one online basket from four stores: Pottery Barn, Pottery Barns Kids, west elm and Williams Sonoma! Don’t assume you’ve left it too late and you have to buy people those generic wine, chocolate and undies gifts and ruin your reputation for having great taste and being thoughtful. We won’t hear of it! Clearly, I will be following my own advice for my remaining gifts because that Saturday toy shopping trip? Ugh…

So, here we go, with presents picked by person. And while we have stated the RRP, almost all of these choices were on sale when we put together this list, so be quick and see if you can still grab the saving before the weekend!

That female friend with the excellent taste who has everything

Brass inlay marble tray, $59: I just don’t believe anyone wouldn’t love this elegant and useful gift! It also looks more expensive than it is in my opinion!

Martini side table, metallic, $199: There’s a reason this west elm classic is a bestseller. I truly believe you could find the perfect place for this in any home and I for one would kiss the person who bought me this for Christmas! Hint hint, Santa!

Colour pop crystal bookends (set of two), $69: These come in pink or blue and are so unique. They’re colourful but not too colourful, so they’d work in most homes, and who doesn’t love books? Weird people, that’s who!

Brass word object: cheers, $49: This gift is festive without being tacky, made of heavy solid brass, it’s a cute decor piece and a bit of fun.

The man in your life who’s too cool for socks and jocks

Oil spotted lacquer tray, $64: Masculine and stylish, this lightweight tray is the perfect size for coffee table, bedside or hallway console. We know plenty of girls who’d love it too!

Tristan bar cart, $534: Frankly, is there anyone who wouldn’t love to receive this stunning bar cart?! We can see a lot of men having this at the top of their bachelor pad wishlist!

Stainless steel mixing pitcher and strainer, $49: A simple, heavy, quality piece of barware for the modern man!

Kirkwood trunk side table, $664: Is it a side table? Is it a bedside? Is it just handy storage? Let them decide. Spoil someone with this unique, vintage looking furniture piece.

Your/their dad

Elliot armchair, $2299: Could this leather armchair BE anymore Dad-appropriate?! A real timeless investment piece. One to club together with the siblings for?

Saddle chocolate leather desk accessories, from $24: Keeping with the leather theme, these desk accessories are another classic, quality choice.

Sneaker cleaning kit, $39: This is a great little gift for a younger dad!

Moscow Mule mug, $34: If Dad’s going to have a cocktail it’s more likely in this copper mug than a martini glass, right?!

The new baby in the family

Gold star sherpa blanket, $69: Made of machine washable cotton and expertly stitched by hand, this pram blanket looks super special.

west elm x pbk metallic print muslin swaddle set, $59:  Trendy swaddles are totally a thing these days and we love this gorgeous set of three! A gift that’s sure to be well received by mum and dad!

Star Wars heirloom patchwork knit baby blanket, $89.50: If you’re friends with the baby’s dad, this is probably the blanket to buy! And if anyone makes licensed merchandise look classy, it’s Pottery Barn Kids!

Harry Potter snitch mobile, $79: Again, you’re buying for the parents really, but how cool is this mobile?! We love it!

Secret Santa under $20

Pineapple scented candle mini, $14: The gold makes it festive but this can sit pretty all year round. And despite what pineapple snobs keep saying, our love for this spiky fruit is going nowhere!

Mulling Spices, $18: I once got told off by Customs for trying to import this kind of thing from the UK. Ridiculous! Anyway, these are great to make mulled wine or cider and might be especially welcomed by those from cooler climates, i.e. Poms!

Cambria mug, $10: Handmade from glazed stoneware and coming in a choice of colours, this could soon become the recipient’s favourite mug!

Peppermint Bark Quick Bread Mix, $20: Suitable for even novice bakers, they’ll love whipping up this festive cake over the holidays with all the festive flavours of Williams Sonoma’s legendary sweet treat.

The kids whose mum doesn’t want anymore garish plastic with primary colours!

Aaron metal play table, $329: Seriously, could this kid size table be anymore stylish? And it’ll certainly not look out of place in the most stylish or minimalist home!

Anywhere Chair and cover, from $159: We are onto our second of these for Seb, having started with the smaller size and graduated to the bigger size. And you can bet the small one will be passed onto Charlie. I love that you can change the covers too if you get bored or change your home decor. They’re lightweight, easy to move around and kids LOVE them! You can choose a cover that’s understated like this or more kid-friendly with many patterns and colours available.

Chelsea all in one kitchen, $599: I mean seriously! Have you ever?! This is better than most of our real, grown up kitchens! Not the cheapest play kitchen out there clearly, but the quality is amazing and this will get years of use in your family.

Play gyms, from $149: A serial offender in the crimes against decor stakes, Pottery Barn Kids’ baby play gyms will not stick out like a sore thumb in your living room!

So, remember, order cutoff for Christmas is this Friday 21 December! What are you waiting for?

* Order by midday 21 December for small parcel delivery to Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane metro areas.

Shop Sibella Court’s bedroom look with Pottery Barn

Photos by Sam McAdam-Cooper

Legendary Australian stylist and bowerbird Sibella Court, recently collaborated with Pottery Barn to create this divine bedroom look. It’s both sublimely Sibella and perfectly Pottery Barn! As ever, she makes this aesthetic look easy, but if you’ve ever tried it yourself, you’ll know it really isn’t!

Since Pottery Barn entered the Australian market five years ago, the global retailer has gained new fans fast. In a nod to the almost chameleon style of Pottery Barn, Sibella was invited to bring her vision to life in a series of original images depicting Australian living.

“Imagine yourself sleeping the summer nights away in a repurposed boatshed,” Sibella says of the look. “Cover the floors with layers of natural and striped rugs, paint the walls in a soft grey and surround yourself with books and games. Maintain the boatshed’s original appeal by using exposed hardware, workmens’ lights and simple joinery and then pile the bed high with blue and white and natural weaves.”

Like to recreate this gorgeous look in your home? We’ve made it easy for you to shop the look below!

“Sibella Court has a quintessentially Australian style – intelligent, artful and classically comfortable. We knew she’d bring a fresh new perspective to what Pottery Barn is. Enduring quality, timeless pieces that continue to improve with age, infused with her bowerbird instincts. Sibella’s vision is a very Australian re-imagining of a classic American aesthetic, an homage to curated living spaces that tell a story of family, space and time,” said Lexi Kentmann, Director – PR and Brand Marketing, Pottery Barn Australia.

Top 8 picks from Pottery Barn’s 2018 spring collection

Pottery Barn’s new season collection is all about chic, Parisian-inspired interiors and I could not be more obsessed!

I have always admired romantic, European decorating but never seemed to understand how to incorporate this style into my own home. It always seemed to feel too soft and girl-ish, and not particularly liveable. But Pottery Barn’s spring range nails a mix of romantic and industrial pieces to create a very modern balance (that also happens to be super affordable).

There are more than 150 new arrivals at Pottery Barn, but here are a few of my personal favourites.

Tallulah Upholstered Sofa

The Tallulah Upholstered Sofa combines the straight lines of European styling with romantic details like side pillows, turned legs and nailheads. It’s a classic piece that will remain the centrepiece of your living room for years to come. $1,599

Luella Media Console

Geometric fretwork and a washed finish gives the Luella Media Console the look of a vintage antique. $1,339

Preston Metal Cart

A multi-tasker with stylish industrial character, the Preston Cart is a go-anywhere piece with a tempered-glass top, two magazine racks and a slatted bottom shelf. It’s set on four castors so moving it from room to room is a breeze. $534

Reeves Desk Chair

This may be one of the most luxe desk chairs I’ve seen to date. With a fully upholstered seat, decorative nailheads and oak legs, the Reeves Desk Chair will no doubt make your time spent desk-bound more comfortable. $854

Delaney Round Coffee Table

With its white Carrara marble top and antique-brass-finished base, the Delaney Round Coffee Table is an on-trend yet affordable piece. $399

Dachshund Bookends

A must-have for the home office, these Dachshund Bookends landed in my shopping cart quicker than you can say “too cute”. $79

Lenore Embroidered Cushion Cover

A romantic interior wouldn’t be complete without an excess of beautiful cushions. The Lenore Embroidered Cushion Covers with their intricate floral patterns and textural embroidery will effortlessly elevate your cushion mix. $79

Preston Task Accent Lamp

The Preston Task Accent Lamp appeals with its rustic charm. The high-gloss enamel hood contrasts beautifully with the bronze-finished base, and is perfect for adding some industrial-edge into the mix. $154

The Pottery Barn spring collection will arrive online and instore from August 2018

1 room, 2 looks: at home with MasterChef’s Hayden Quinn

When you’re a busy couple juggling two demanding careers it can be challenging to find the time to make your home look its best. Such was the case for model turned cook, Jax Raynor and her partner, MasterChef favourite Hayden Quinn. Their beachside apartment had good bones and was full of natural light but it lacked the cosiness they craved at the end of a long day.

BEFORE

The solution? They called in Pottery Barn interior designer Rhys Duggan to help make the most of their sunny space. “We both love to cook and entertain so we asked Rhys to somehow open up the space, yet make it warm and inviting too,” says Jax.

The couple’s enthusiasm for the project was infectious so Rhys put together two looks for them to choose from: one, global oasis, to reflect their love of travel, and the other, island chic, that referenced the sand and surf not far from their front door.

AFTER Island chic
AFTER Global oasis

For both looks, Jax and Hayden’s existing large red vintage rug was kept and a smaller, lighter rug placed on top to introduce some brightness and add a luxe note of layering.

“We replaced their heavy, dark coffee table with glass-topped coffee and side tables with light metal frames to give an airy feel, and because they’re transparent they help to visually open up the space,” says Rhys.

Some plump, generously sized cushions were added to the sofa and as both Hayden and Jax had a healthy collection of indoor plants, Rhys decided to use them to create a focal point.

“We decorated a mantel in front of their living area, which moved the focus away from the TV and provided a space to display their favourite travel souvenirs,” he says. “Creating a focal point helps when you’re arranging a room layout as you use it as your central point of reference and then work everything else around it.”

BEFORE mantel
AFTER mantel

With a small space it helps to use pieces that do double duty, like bar carts. The bulk of the time they can be used for storage – just pop some great looking baskets underneath – and then wheel them into place when entertaining.

Working to a colour palette that’s repeated in all areas of Jax and Hayden’s living space helped to unify the room making it look larger than it really is. For instance, Rhys replaced the couple’s timber dining chairs with upholstered chairs in a fabric that matched the sofa. The result being that your eye floats across the white sofa, walls and visually connect to the chairs.

AFTER dining

“The drinks trolley has to be one of my favourite touches,” says Hayden. “That and how the place just looks a whole lot bigger!”

AFTER Hayden’s new favourite, the bar cart, is great double duty furniture

“Now when I’m at home, I really feel at home,” says Jax. “It just feels more us.”

How to choose the perfect rug this Winter

When Autumn begins to slide into Winter and we start thinking warm thoughts about hot chocolate, hibernation and hygge (remember that?), it’s time to get serious about getting cosy. Let’s face it, we’re going to be spending a lot of hours inside so it’s time to rug up – quite literally.

“A rug is a great place to start when adding layers to your home to make it all nice and cosy for winter,” says Jodi Hall, west elm‘s national visual manager. “It’s also an easy reference when deciding on other pieces, like cushions and throws. Just work with the colours of your rug and you can’t go wrong.”

Choosing a rug can feel a bit daunting, but it needn’t. Start by deciding what floor plan is best for your space. For instance, if you’re looking for a living room rug there are two tried-and-tested layouts. The first is referred to as the ‘classic’, and it’s where you have a sofa or armchairs against a wall. Here, you want the  rug to be big enough to fit under the front legs of the furniture, but not stretch as far as the wall. The second is known as the ‘floating’ layout, where your furniture is in the centre of the room. For this, choose a rug large enough to fit under all four legs of each piece of furniture.

“Both these layouts work because the furniture is connected to the rug in the right proportions to the room,” explains Jodi. “So everything is visually anchored and balanced. Bedrooms often stump people, but I like to use a large rug under the bottom two thirds of the bed. It always looks good.”

Next things to consider are colour and pattern. If the room already has lots going on, a solid colour or neutral rug will bring things down to earth. But if your sofa and other pieces are quite simple, a patterned rug will make them pop. “For foolproof colour coordination, match the secondary colour in the rug to your sofa or other key pieces of furniture,” says Jodi.

At west elm, a couple of great neutral choices are the bestselling Vines Wool Rug, made of 100 percent wool and handcrafted in India, which has a subtle but sophisticated colour variation; and the Hand-Loomed Shine Rug that has a subtle shimmer. While both are neutral, they have another element of interest so never look flat or dull.

But if you’re set on something rich and sumptuous that will withstand the test of time, west elm’s Souk Wool Rug is a winner. A modern interpretation of a traditional Moroccan Berber, the classic charcoal and white colourway easily fits into any decorating style. It’s an all-round box ticker.

Whatever style, size, colour or pattern you lean towards, think of a rug as more than just a beautifully textured and insulating home warmer, but a piece of art for your floor. Each tuft, knot and loop are like paintbrush strokes coming together to form a rich masterpiece – but a masterpiece you can sink your toes into while binging on Netflix until Spring rolls around again!

Pottery Barn is back with a versatile collection just in time for the warmer weather (it’s coming, apparently!). With over 150 new arrivals, it’s hard to nail it down to just a few, but here are my personal favourites.

Pittsburgh Crank Sit-Stand Desk

I am a huge advocate for healthy and comfortable workstations. Unfortunately, ergonomic and stylish generally do not mix. Pottery Barn fills the gap with a height-adjustable desk that exudes industrial-era functionality and style. $1,424.

Hastings Home Office Collection

Complete the look of the vintage sit-stand desk with some grey-washed caddies. With their sturdy craftsmanship and light grey wash, keeping things stylish and neat will be a breeze. $39-to-$79.

Galvanized Hourglass

Enclosed in a simple galvanised frame, this large hourglass is both a sculptural art object and a functional and fun way to mark time. A beautiful finishing touch to a farmhouse industrial look. $159.

Ornate Carved Wood Mirror

This mirror is probably my most coveted piece from the new collection. The intricate hand-carved fir wood frame gives it a charming vintage look – perfect for pairing with a few embroidered pillows. $299.

Rico Media Console

With a reclaimed pine frame, bold red finish and custom iron hardware, the Rico Media Console certainly fits the farmhouse industrial vibe. Each console is distressed by hand, making for one-of-a-kind pieces. $1,599.

Euclid Accent Table

I love metallic accents in a home! The slightly textured cast metal and an antique-brass finish give this lustrous handcrafted table an artisanal feel. The top is enhanced with hammered details and is bordered with a raised lip. $199.

Natalia Silk Jacquard Cushion Cover

I am a sucker for cushions. A ribbon-embroidery technique brings dimension to this 100% cotton cushion cover. My personal favourite is the rich fig. $64.

Vintage Floral Salad Plate

To be completely honest, I have never been a fan of floral dinnerware. However, the new soft florals of this collection have an almost watercolour look to them that I like. Each piece is kiln-fired with a white crackle glaze that adds to its authentic look and feel. $12 each.

Isadora Oversized Throw

Hand woven from 100% cotton, this giant throw is big enough to snuggle up with your favourites. The calming blue tones are yarn dyed with fringed ends for a boho, textured look. $104.

The spring collection will land in stores mid-August. Or shop online here.

Stylist tips to make your next dinner party a hit!

We all love the idea of hosting friends and family for lavish dinner parties – but how often do we actually do it? It can feel too difficult, and quickly spiral into becoming a stressful affair that you don’t get to enjoy because you’re stuck in the kitchen cooking.

Rhys Duggan, national visual merchandise manager for Pottery Barn, shares his tips on creating a dinner party that’s as memorable for guests as it is for you the host (for all the right reasons!). “I think there are four key elements to any good dinner party – nail these and you’re on your way to having a great time, and so will your guests!’

Guests – this can make or break a good party. First decide how many guests you can have; then find a good connection between them – maybe they have a similar interest, maybe they like art, or maybe they’ve been to the same holiday destination. This can mean they’ve all got something in common to chat about – and will instantly mean there’s a relaxed feeling at your soiree. Plus – my top tip – if any guests arrive early, set them to work. Ask them to finish setting the table, toss the salad, or pop the first bottle of bubbly – that diffuses any nerves and creates a collaborative feel amongst your party of friends.

Food – this is a big one, and one that requires lots of thought. Try and choose a menu that means you’re not slaving away in the kitchen while everyone’s relaxing around the table, that you can pre-prepare and then plate up. Share plates are also great running down  the centre of a table  – because it creates a communal feeling and conversation will flow! And make sure you consider your guests eating requirements – nothing worse than a vegetarian turning up to a menu centred around meat!

Music – we all know how music sets the tone; choose a playlist that evokes the theme you’re aiming for – but that won’t impede lively conversation. Or even better – before your dinner party, invite guests to share their favourite song – so they’re part of the playlist too.

The setting – this is the fun part! Pick a theme and stick to it – this plays a big role in creating a dinner party to remember. I love theming my parties heavily – adding drama, and making the table the centre piece – the stage of the dinner party. It makes guests feel really special too.

“So to get to my favourite part – the setting. Think big and cater to your audience.

“Hens party, baby shower, birthday or even a ladies lunch – the setting below is going to get your guests talking. We started off with a white linen tablecloth – and found this great wrapping paper to use as a unique runner! That’s when the fun starts with layering and adding in elements to amp up the luxe factor.

“Well it looks luxe – but it’s actually quite simple, some ribbon to group the cutlery – tying back to the pink in the runner, gold flatware – elevates the table settings, some faux botanicals – which guests can take home as a keepsake after your party, and candles. Plus your menu can riff off your setting too – generous glasses of rose and meringues sprinkled with pistachios and rose petals – you’ll have your friends talking for weeks!”

“Next up, dramatic impact is key here – but the setting itself is actually very simple and perfect for a quick Friday dinner with friends. I am a big fan of moody table linen – and I always think a tablecloth creates the illusion of formality and acts as the perfect base, while the striped napkins add a more casual element.

“We’ve chosen some foliage and flowers to run down the centre of the table to contrast with the inky blue, and the use of lemons as place card holders, bringing everyday objects to the table, keeps the feeling relaxed and is a quirky twist.”

“Finally, thinking of gathering the family for a Sunday roast? You can’t beat going classic – white, blue and taupe, perfect! Fresh white table linen – and for a modern take – run a roll of brown paper down the middle and add some succulents to the setting.

“I love bundling up the cutlery with a little ribbon as a simple feature to each setting. Candles always elevate a setting – and create a sense of ambience, plus they add height to a tablescape.”

Influencer Abbie Mellé’s bedroom makeover with Pottery Barn

An experienced lifestyle photographer, Abbie Mellé has built an Instagram following of over 100k people who check in for her earthy, light-filled, chic country vibe. Having just made the move back from London to the photogenic New South Wales Southern Highlands, the Bowral-based influencer celebrated by giving her bedroom a makeover with some gorgeous Pottery Barn furniture and homewares.

“When envisaging styling my bedroom, I wanted to have items that gave a quiet peaceful feel to the space, without being too loud or showy. These pieces are perfect for creating such a room. I picked these particular pieces for their elegant simplicity and beautiful design, ” says Abbie whose stylish bucolic aesthetic makes her a perfect fit for the brand.

Natural fibres and muted tones are key to the look

As for her number one decorating tip, Abbie is a fan of keeping things simple and pared back while incorporating muted tones and plenty of soft texture. “I like to do this by adding in items I love, and then taking some away, regularly switching around elements to keep things interesting and varied.” A prominent feature in her Instagram feed, fresh foliage is a hallmark of the photographer’s work. “I always, always bring in fresh flowers and a beautiful pot plant,” says Abbie.

Abbie always features a pop of greenery

“I love how versatile Pottery Barn is, with the ability to search and buy from such a large variety of beautiful items, ranging from furniture to linens to kitchen utensils. And with so many pieces complementing each other as well, it makes decisions for room styling so much simpler,” says Abbie.

Jen’s Lust List 23.05.17

How beautiful are these pieces by small Melbourne studio Felix Furniture? Cork and plywood never looked so good. The young couple behind the brand make everything by hand themselves  and are big on sustainability. It’s no wondered they’ve amassed a large following in just three years.

I’ve been getting a bit wallpaper obsessed lately as I really want some in the office. I love what’s on offer at Quercus & Co. as well as Greg Natale and Anna Spiro’s ranges (both really different!) from Porter’s Paints. And you may remember I’ve used the gorgeous Publisher Textiles’ Bugsey design in my last two homes, I loved it so much! But I think it’s time for something different. Any other great Aussie wallpaper brands out there I don’t know about? Please share with me in the comments!

Anna Spiro for Porter’s Paints wallpaper

Also, speaking of home offices, I’ve just bought this storage combo from Pottery Barn. I hate when office furniture looks too, well, officey! There’s nothing corporate about these lovely grey pieces and I think the price point is really good too. Windsor door cabinet, Windsor bookshelf and Windsor storage unit (at the time of writing, these are all on sale). There’s a matching desk too but I already have a timber one.

We featured these yesterday, but I’m really loving Mr Jason Grant’s new tile range with Di Lorenzo. So much so I’m reconsidering my stone splashback in my future kitchen in favour of the mini bricks in deep sea. Yes, we’re talking navy, you got me!

I’m so pleased with these pendants we recently installed in our living room. They were a brave choice and they definitely make a statement but they’re working so well in the big space. Everyone has loved them and even better, they take LED bulbs so they’re really energy efficient as well as beautiful! I’ll be sharing some more photos of the full room soon. Lancette 9 Light CTC in Brushed Brass, $299 from Beacon Lighting

I’m also loving these cool, all-natural handmade baskets from new brand J’Jute. From $149. Many other designs available. Toys, shoes, towels: I see endless potential uses!

And last but not least, I’m loving Georgia MacMillan’s third textile range, especially this gingham-look Farglioni Blue Check. Isn’t it divine?! Available in Australia via Nicola Lawrence Textiles and Papers, $189 per metre.

I’ll be back with more favourite finds next Tuesday!

Pottery Barn’s new size-conscious range ideal for apartments

Multi-functional and size-conscious, Pottery Barn’s new Small Spaces range stopped us in our tracks recently with its clever balance of form and function. Featuring sofas with in-built storage, extendable tables and a moveable clothes rack to name just a few pieces, the new collection is not only super clever but it’s affordable too.

“Customers love Pottery Barn’s comfortable, relaxed style and focus on timeless design and that hasn’t changed with our latest collection. We just saw an opportunity to offer more diversity in size, functionality and value. The Small Spaces collection focuses on size-conscious, multi-functional pieces that work in any home, big or small,” says Pottery Barn’s vice president and divisional merchandise manager Michelle Hummel.

Shelf ledge with hooks

But while this collection is designed for use anywhere, we predict it will be a massive hit for Australian apartment dwellers – a rapidly expanding demographic. “In this collection we thought a lot about creating furniture and decor that could serve multiple purposes: a coffee table that becomes a side table, or a kitchen cart that easily transforms into a book shelf. It’s beautiful, thoughtfully designed furniture at great value that captures the relaxed, classic style for which Pottery Barn is known,” says Michelle.

The Alice Gatelag table doubles as a compact dining table and storage unit too

One of my favourite pieces from the range is the Dublin Stackable Shelving Unit – mostly for its versatility but its industrial lines certainly help. “Up to four units can be stacked to meet the exact storage needs of any room,” says Michelle.

Dublin stackable shelving unit – add as many as you need

The Alice Gatelag Table is a great one for apartment dwellers with its drop-leaf sides and shelving underneath. “It transforms from a compact dining table into a handy storage unit in an instant while the Rainier Galvanised Storage Cart is a three-tiered rolling trolley that will come in handy almost anywhere from the bathroom to study,” says Michelle.

The Rainier galvanised storage cart has myriad uses

Another clever design is the compact Bryant upholstered sectional sofa – it comes with a clever storage chaise and the cushion lifts to reveal a spacious compartment for storing cushions, blankets or anything else.

The Modular clothes rack will no doubt prove popular too with its simple styling and versatility. “It offers chic and compact open storage for clothing and shoes,” says Michelle.

The collection launches in Australia next Tuesday 14 February.

Jen’s Christmas gift picks from west elm, Pottery Barn & more

Sponsored by Williams Sonoma Australia

You know who does Christmas well? Americans, that’s who! Having grown up in the UK, Christmas for me is all about roaring fires, mulled wine, huge roast dinners and plenty of baked goods. Here in Australia, while many people’s Christmas is more about the beach, great weather and seafood, I know plenty of us can’t resist the charm of a more traditional white Christmas vibe. Step into the US mega brands Pottery Barn, west elm, Williams Sonoma or Pottery Barn Kids right now and you’re sure to get your fix!

On top of that, the four stores are brilliant places to pick up Christmas gifts. So I’ve curated my favourites from each brand for you.

WEST ELM

Metallic + Pastel Glass Candle Holders, from $16

Combining this year’s trends for pastels and metallics, these would make a gorgeous gift! Great price point too.

Crewel Diamond Linework Cushion, $54

west elm do cushions SO well in my opinion and most of you readers would agree you can never have too many! I’m coveting this one and its monochrome palette makes it a safe bet to buy for someone else. As if you needed more reasons to love it, this cushion is made by hand in India and 100% cotton. I feel a gift-to-self coming on…

Cafe Scented Candle — Honey and Tobacco, $22

Trust me when I tell you this candle smells DIVINE. In fact, I’d go as far as to say this is my favourite candle discovery of 2016; on high rotation at my place. The packaging’s fab too. It would look gorgeous in anyone’s home.

copper-bar-flask-zWaffle Weave Resort Robe, $159

WILLIAMS SONOMA

The Original Peppermint Bark $42

Seriously, they need to make this stuff all year round, but then I guess it wouldn’t be such a festive treat. Creamy chocolate, white chocolate, peppermint oil and smashed up candy canes. What’s not to like, people? This stuff is so Christmassy and so moreish! The beautiful tin makes it perfect for gifting. You could even get away with skipping the gift wrap. There’s actually a whole Peppermint Bark range these days, with genius creations like Peppermint Bark Pretzels. Does it get more American or more festive?!

Cosy Cocktail Mixer, Mulled Pear $24

I once, innocently, asked my friend in the UK to Airmail me some mulled wine spice mix for Christmas. It did not end well. Customs didn’t like it for whatever reason! Another time, my in laws’ Christmas guests looked at me like I was a crazy lady for serving them hot mulled wine on a 30-plus day! I think this cosy cocktail mixer would go down well with the Aussies this Christmas though!

Nordic Ware Small Anniversary Bundt Cake Pan, $40

Buying for a baker? Who could resist this beautiful cake tin? Not only will it help you create seriously impressive looking cakes without all the effort (a dusting of powdered sugar or a drizzle of icing and you’re away!), it would also looking stunning hanging on a kitchen wall or displayed on open shelving. Gorgeous in gold! This is a smaller version of the original Nordic Ware bundt cake pan introduced in the mid 20th Century. Round out this gift with a packet of Bundt Cake Mix.

POTTERY BARN KIDS

Anywhere Chair, from $114 complete with cover. Monogramming available in store for an extra cost

The bestselling Anywhere Chair is a winner for kids. We bought Seb one for his first birthday and he loves it. Not only is it sturdier than some of the cheaper ones out there on the market, it also looks so much more stylish in your lounge room and you won’t want to hide it away! As an added bonus the cover is machine washable and you can buy a spare cover too (there’s a variety of colours and patterns to choose from) if your child, for example, tends to cover his in Weetbix kisses and touch it with yoghurt hands…

Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch & Max sheet set, $109

You’ve heard the concept of new PJs for Christmas, now what about new sheets?! I absolutely love these festive Grinch sheets! One flat and one fitted sheet and a pillowcase included.

Madeline Play Vanity, $399

What little girl wouldn’t love this pint-sized dressing table? So gorgeous! The extremely high quality will hopefully help you justify the price tag of this investment piece which could one day become a family heirloom! Tuffet stool ($109) sold separately.

New Star Wars

The Pottery Barn Kids Star Wars range has always been amazing and the latest pieces don’t disappoint! I’m loving the Play Chairs ($179) in Darth Vader or R2-D2 and the Decorative Cushions ($59).

You can also pick up some really special Christmas decorations from the stores. I’m loving the Merry and Bright Stockings from Pottery Barn Kids (even better if you personalise them) for $49, the Blowfish Ornament from Pottery Barn for $17.50 (and so many more of their tree decs) and the Felt Ball Sparkle Wreath from west elm for $69.
