Buying a fridge guide: From size to design & more!

Easily one of the most important appliances in the home, a fridge is a significant purchase for any household which can make choosing one a rather overwhelming process.

Depending on your cooking and entertaining needs, the ideal model can range from a French door, a four door, a top or bottom mount, or a pigeon pair. And then there’s the extras like an external water dispenser that may be a non-negotiable? If you’re suffering with decision fatigue when it comes to a fridge purchase, you should know that you’re not alone. We caught up with e&s recently for the complete lowdown on all the things to consider when in the market for a fridge upgrade.

Household size
A young couple will have different household requirements from that of a growing family, and this is especially the case when it comes to the fridge. Every family arrangement will have different cooking, storage and entertaining habits and requirements.

Ideally, your fridge’s capacity should align with the number of people in your household which usually means that younger apartment dwellers can typically choose a smaller capacity fridge to that of a family and vice versa.

Available space
The emergence of apartment living has led to kitchens shrinking in size, with butler’s pantries giving way to a more open aesthetic that brings together living, dining and cooking areas into one cohesive space. As a result, a standard top or bottom mount fridge might not always be the right fit for the kitchen, with modular options better suited when space is at a premium.

Of course, French doors, pigeon pairs or traditional top or bottom mounts are ideal choices when the kitchen has ample space for the fridge.

Design direction
Form and function go hand in hand, and once the household’s needs have been considered, design should be next on the list. Freestanding fridges are usually the mainstay in classic kitchens, while their integrated counterparts are ideal for contemporary spaces, concealed behind cabinetry when not in use. Looking to infuse a pop of colour in the kitchen? Coloured fridges are the way to go.

Extra features to consider
Once considered a futuristic vision, modern technological innovations have ensured fridges are more efficient than ever before, with a slew of features simplifying use and enhancing convenience. External water dispensers and glass display doors are a great way to reduce how often a fridge is opened, while sliding shelves make it easier to store and access items.

Newer models also come with airflow systems that help maintain consistent temperatures no matter how often the fridge is opened. And those looking for a model that is easier to clean and maintain can choose from a range of black options too.

Laundry ideas: Small space design solutions

Kitchen aside, there’s no denying the laundry is one of the most integral parts of any home. And with space increasingly at a premium (apartment and townhouse living is becoming the norm in many cities), it really pays to make the laundry as smartly designed as possible. Not only will clever design and the right set of appliances make the space more efficient and enjoyable to use, but it will also reduce the time you spend doing laundry which sounds like a win in our books!

e&s laundry

From making the best use of vertical space to integrating appliances, here Victorian appliance retailer e&s shares its top five solutions for making the most out of a petite sized laundry.

Consider washer & dryer placement
Side by side washer and dryers are more accessible and generally larger, while stacking your appliances has great space saving capabilities. If you aren’t certain on your layout, opt for front loaders over top loaders, as they can be stacked or installed under an existing bench, making more room for a folding station.

Stacked washer & dryer

Maximise vertical space and use open shelving
Include overhead storage and a wall mounted ironing board so it’s out of the way when you don’t need it. A suspended drying rack utilises ceiling space that would otherwise go unused. Open shelving along with storage boxes and baskets make for an open, airy aesthetic. Cane or wicker baskets are durable, have great storage capacity, and can hide away cleaning products or dirty clothing from sight.

Use the back of the laundry door for storage
An over-the-door ironing board is an effective and practical solution when your laundry is lacking storage and floor space. Lighter and less fiddly than traditional ironing boards, over-the-door ironing boards are affordable, space-saving, and always conveniently hidden out of view when you aren’t using them. Mops and brooms can also be hung in over-the-door holders when space is tight.

Integrated cabinetry for appliances and storage
If you don’t have a dedicated laundry room at all, integrated cabinetry ensures appliances and products are all tucked out of the way and out of sight when you have people over.

Save space with a washer-dryer combo
If you don’t have room for a standalone dryer, consider a washer-dryer combo. It’s perfect for homes without a dedicated laundry room, doing the job of two appliances, while taking up the footprint of one.

Chinese restaurant interior wows at Queen Chow, Manly

Don’t get me wrong, there’s something I love about a traditional Chinese restaurant interior. The paper lanterns, the waving cats, all that red (which I usually HATE in interiors!). It’s familiar, nostalgic and, like the menu, you know what you’re getting. I also have a penchant for today’s trendy and aesthetically slick Asian eateries and Manly’s new Queen Chow, the latest restaurant on the increasingly impressive Northern Beaches hospitality scene in Sydney, is definitely an example of the latter. The food looks pretty good too…

Yes, Merivale have done it again!

The exciting Cantonese concept on Manly Wharf opened last week, headed up by the dynamic duo behind Queen Chow Enmore, Patrick Friesen and Eric Koh. Friesen’s vision for the menu is classic neighbourhood Cantonese that celebrates great Australian produce. Inspired by the way that Cantonese food is recreated around the globe and using the best of what our country has to offer, Friesen hopes to add to the ever-evolving mosaic of what it is today.

“We want to create a place that echoes the sentiment of neighbourhood Chinese restaurants of years past, where people come often and with the people they love the most. Your local Chinese, with all the favourites, cooked beautifully,” he says. Like Queen Chow Enmore, he has taken inspiration from the tastes and aromas of Hong Kong’s famous dai pai dongs, but this time served with a beachside sensibility and plenty of Australian seafood on the menu.

Guests can start with a variety of flavour-packed appetisers – oysters with native finger lime, handmade wonton soup and BBQ Peking duck pancakes with cucumber, leek and hoisin – then indulge in some of Australia’s finest mud crab, lobster and pippies, wok-fried with XO, or Singapore’s black pepper sauce. There are half shell scallops with XO vermicelli, garlic butter king prawns and black pepper Moreton Bay bugs – all best enjoyed with Queen Chow’s special fried rice and juicy Asian greens on the side.

Queen Chow Manly will also embrace the nostalgia of local Chinese restaurants that dot our landscape, evoking rich food memories of sticky honey king prawns, Mongolian lamb sang choi bao, and deep-fried ice cream with butterscotch sauce. Enmore’s signature BBQ platters of roast duck and honey glazed char siu pork will also make an appearance. Who else is drooling about now?!

The dim sum menu has been expertly crafted by Koh, highly regarded as one of the greatest dim sum masters in the world. Bringing with him 35 years’ experience including tenures at Mr. Wong and London’s Michelin-starred Hakkasan and Yauatcha, he has made the artistry of dim sum his life’s work. He will be feeding Manly’s hungry masses his famous steamed, baked and fried dumplings, including scallop and prawn siu mai, prawn har gau, jade seafood, wild mushroom, pork xiao long bao and egg custard tarts.

The drinks list takes inspiration from the flavour of Friesen’s food and uses fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices found in the kitchen. Curated by Franck Moreau and Adrian Filiuta, the wine list is relaxed and approachable, with a selection of over 200 classic, organic, biodynamic and premium wines from Australia and around the world. There is a natural focus on Riesling and lighter style reds to befit the waterside setting.

Elegant yet casual, and drenched in natural light and spectacular views of Sydney Harbour, the space itself bares the bones of the original Papi Chulo restaurant, while deep green timbers, dark woods and marble bring it into a new era. Three group tables are fitted with a much-loved throwback, the Lazy Susan. A zinc clad oyster bar takes pride of place next to the kitchen, while the live fish tank greets guests on arrival.

Bathroom trends: What’s new in tapware?

By Rob Sinclair

When it comes to predicting what’s hot in interiors, it usually pays to look to the northern hemisphere, two seasons ahead of us, for inspiration and what is set to hit Australian shores.

Image: Martina Gemmola for e&s

I saw these trends first-hand this season after attending the ISH bathroom fair in Frankfurt, with all the powerhouse brands from around the world under the one roof. Overall when it comes to the bathroom, we’re seeing people wanting to create luxurious spaces for relaxation and escapism. Bathrooms are becoming a spa and wellness retreat in their own right, with people investing in things like rain showers and tapware with beautiful finishes that are not only functional but create a sense of luxe in the bathroom.

A standout at ISH was the sheer amount of tapware in different colours, finishes and textures. And with tapware being an easy way to update your bathroom without necessarily undergoing a complete renovation, I thought I’d share some of the biggest trends to come out of ISH.

Colours

Tapware has come a long way in recent years, with so many options available when it comes to colours. Matte black is popular, and I can’t see that trend going anywhere, as well as copper, brass, rose gold and bronze. I think we are also going to see more of white tapware as it creates a crisp and fresh look.

Finishes

The trend is growing towards natural, matte finishes on fixtures and fittings offering a raw, industrial and old-world look. PVD, or physical vapour deposition, is a method of producing thin films and coatings for your tapware, guaranteed to provide durability and sustainability. Layers of colour are usually deposited onto stainless steel to replicate copper and brass looks. Gessi offered more than 20 different types of these finishes to choose from at ISH, and Hansgrohe had 16, which demonstrates this look will be here to stay.

Texture

We will see tapware – both the base and spouts – treated with a kind of three-dimensional effect or structure on its surface. Think dimples (like a golf ball), ‘pimples’ and other 3D shapes. Brodware is another one of my favourite tapware brands, and their new Yokato series has a knurled surface that adds to the vintage textured look.

The new metallic – brushed metals will be big for spring

From copper to brass and bronze, metallics will continue their reign into spring but with more of an aged, worn-in feel, says former Reno Rumble judge and E&S ambassador Romy Alwill. “Metallics can instantly brighten up a kitchen or living area that needs a much needed edge this season for a cost effective and quick renovation. As a build on the industrial trend we’ve seen in kitchens, we’re seeing a surge of interest around luxurious bathroom finishes, especially with aged metals such as antique bronzes and different types of brass,” says stylist Romy, who thinks the look will be popular for everything from doors and handles to cupboards and joinery.

And with dark cabinetry a strong look at present, metallic accents are the perfect complement. “Darker kitchens are definitely becoming more popular and people are looking to balance really good quality cabinetry with metallics on doors, handles and by putting small details on the front of the cupboards to customise the look and feel. Small updates, as we all know, can make such a difference and are very cost effective,” says Romy.

And it’s a look that isn’t limited to the kitchen, with the bathroom fair game too. “Ultimately, everyone is looking for something customisable that will make their bathroom or kitchen really stand out. Customisable elements such as organic looking tiles, or imperfect finishes are rising in popularity, as they deliver a really different look and metallics work in much the same way.”

The trend will also be seen in tapware with chrome and metallic mixers and taps very much on-trend. “A quality mixer in a bold colour can completely transform a kitchen or bathroom. In the kitchen, a pull-out mixer in an unusual tone or shape can become a talking point when entertaining guests. Installing a bold colour in the bathroom can also can inject much needed colour into this space,” says Romy.
