Currently coveting: Sly’s terrazzo & suede homewares

Titled Tangence, the new collection from Sly hit our inbox this week and it’s too beautiful not to share. The title refers to the act of touching and the range certainly has a strong sense of tactility –  velvet, suede, terrazzo and brass are just some of its sumptuous finishes.

“This season I wanted to focus on simplicity and texture, stripping everything back to clean lines,” says Sly’s founder Lauren Finks. The brand-new offering also encompasses an interesting powder-coated shelf and a multi-functional hanging rail too.

“I love our Tuck shelf. Given living spaces are small these days, creating items that look great and are functional is exciting,” says Lauren of the versatile floating shelf that is made from powder-coated steel and Tasmanian oak.

The Tuck shelf is available in white and moss green and is perfect for maximising storage in small spaces.

The concession to small space living continues with the Axton rail. “This is a very different and ambitious piece for me which again focusses on function in small space-living. It’s also made locally in Melbourne with quality materials which is exciting,” says Lauren. The multifunctional steel piece is powder-coated in a soft matte clay hue and features a single Tasmanian oak rung – it’s storage possibilities are endless.

I love the Knox cushions – made in Australia from luxe perforated Italian suede (in buff, clay, navy and olive) they feature a chic brass zip.

I’m also crushing on the Omni Terrazzo trivet set. Comprised of four trivets, the set is housed in a moss green steel cuff and each trivet has a unique colour, pattern and chip size. Divine.

Founded in 2013, Sly has moved from a hobby business to a full-blown concern for Lauren. “It goes hand in hand with my design business. Not many people know that I am a graphic designer as well, so my skills in that area organically grew to products so I merged them together to form Sly,” says Lauren.

Sly’s Art Deco, laser cut bamboo trivets are certainly unique!

Featuring their signature geometric look, Sly’s first foray into tableware is unlike anything I’ve seen before. Inspired by the Art Deco era, their set of four small trivets (or coasters) and one large trivet, are precision cut from natural bamboo, a highly intricate process.

“They are laser cut which can be a timely process considering how intricate these designs are,” explains Sly founder Lauren Finks. “I also spent many month sampling, as I wanted to see how the lines translated into the bamboo and how they would hold cups and plates. I didn’t want to make them too gappy as I still wanted them to be functional.”

Choosing bamboo for its natural, lightweight and durable qualities (it’s used as scaffolding in Hong Kong!), Lauren then conditions the final products with raw linseed oil, to give the trivets a bit of waterproofing and a nice golden colour.

All produced in Australia, prices start at $50 for the set of four trivets. Pre-order now for late October delivery. Shop online.
