We’re coveting Zip’s fabulous new range of metallic taps!

As loyal readers will know, we’ve always had a soft spot for the Zip HydroTap. Australian made, the tap combines fabulous function with unprecedented form and the Platinum Design range has made it even more covetable. Comprised of nine fabulous new colours in on-trend metallics, the hardest part is choosing which one to take home!

From shiny and brushed gold and rose gold to platinum, gunmetal, nickel, brushed nickel and antique brass, we’re in love with all of them – the gold iterations in particular.  They’re just SO luxe and surprisingly versatile. We can imagine the antique brass one lighting up a more traditional kitchen while the brushed nickel would look right at home in a minimalist abode and the gunmetal would be the perfect finishing touch for an industrial interior scheme.

A leader in the water filtration market, Zip is an Australian success story that has operated for over 50 years and now exports to over 60 countries. The most user-friendly, convenient tap on the market, a single lever allows you to select filtered, boiling, chilled or sparkling water and uses the Zip patented 0.2 micron filtration system which removes dirt and contaminants that are as small as 1/5000th of a millimeter. The other amazing part about these taps is that the chlorine taste and odours are removed yet the fluoride remains.

And not only do these new taps look the business, they are even more sustainable and environmentally friendly than their predecessors too. Energy efficient, best-in-class cooling technology and an air-cooled ventilation system uses up to 53% less energy than the brand’s previous models. Priced from $2495, they certainly aren’t a budget choice but hot damn, they look good.

Why winter is the best time to start planning your pool

Planning the installation of your pool during the colder months is the perfect way to ensure you’re ready to dive in by the time summer rolls around. Below are five main factors to consider when preparing for your pool:

1. Create a look book

Gather design inspiration from a variety of sources including newspapers, magazines and even scenic shots taken on holiday, pay particular attention to the pool water colour and the finish/treatment, tile or otherwise that is helping to create it. Then get an expert in to advise on making your design vision a reality. A good landscape designer will then put your ideas into a cohesive plan that considers your property holistically as it is not just about the pool. A comprehensive landscape design will mean you are ready to construct a clear vision of what your pool oasis will look like come summer.

2. Find a credible team

After you’ve established your aesthetic vision the next step is to source the right team to execute the job. Ensure they are credible and well established; a great way of monitoring this is to check that they are a member of the right associations. Spasa for pool builders and the LNA Landscape Association NSW (for which I am the current president) for all of the other exterior construction builders; as this will mean that they are highly regarded, have earned the respect of the construction industry, government bodies and other associated professionals. Going with a LNA member will also offer protection should there be any issues during the design and construction phase, as all LNA members have the necessary insurances and proven track records.

3. Establish a budget

It’s likely that you will have an idea of what you’re willing to spend on your pool installation and materials. However, it’s also important to speak with your team to establish a more accurate idea of what the process will cost. Design experts will be able to collate more information and give you an estimate on what it will cost to make your pool come to life and integrate within your outdoor space.

4. Check your local building codes

It is important to know the rules before you embark on the pool installation process.  The NSW legislation states that pools must be registered with local councils or risk facing fines. To ensure compliance with the regulations, a ‘Development Application’ can be lodged through council, or if certain guidelines are met a ‘Complying Development’ can be carried out through a licensed private certifier. Both will need to meet the following requirements: that pool fences are 1.2m high (with no gaps of more than 100mm), all horizontal pales must be at least 900mm apart, latches must be 1.5m above ground and boundary fences must be 1.8m high.

5. Water features for a finishing touch

Once you’ve made the decision to dive into swimming pool ownership, why not add a stylish water feature. A water feature can be an eye-catching addition to any pool design and also adds to the ambience with the sound of running water. I recommend installing your water feature during the initial construction period as retrofitting can be difficult and costly.

Going back to my childhood with the new SodaStream Play

At the end of the day, the SodaStream does exactly what it did when we were kids, it just looks a lot better on your counter, is more practical and these days there are way more drinks flavours available. It’s so nostalgic for me. I remember the one we had as kids: it was white and yellow and the bottles were glass. I was pretty jealous of the boys next door with their snazzier, newer version with (wait for it) plastic bottles!

Lifestlye Play White-1

These days, the plastic (PET) bottles are a given. What I love about the latest fizz machine from SodaStream is its sleek design. The Play Drinks Maker, released last month, is minimal by design and ultra-simple to use. Allowing consumers to add a pop of personality to their home, it’s available in six vibrant colours including brand new yellow and grey. I was gifted the white and I’m happy with that. It sits there unobtrusively on the benchtop and it’s actually getting used a lot! I’m loving the instant ‘free’ sparkling water with a wedge of fresh lime while my (big kid) husband is loving adding the many syrup options to his fizzy water.

Speaking of syrups and flavours, SodaStream Caps are a new patent–pending flavouring method. This single–serve, disposable capsule system delivers a simple, fun and user–friendly experience. Simply choose your flavour, place the capsule onto a 1 litre carbonated PET bottle and press down lightly to start the flow of flavour. Within seconds, the sparkling drink is ready to enjoy. You can still buy bottles of your favourite syrups including some sugar-free versions sweetened with Stevia.

Play is the first home carbonation system to feature the new “auto-lift” slider, along with the popular “snap-lock” mechanism, making it quick, simple and easy to use. Myles Anceschi, managing director of SodaStream Australia, said: “We understand that people want a product that is fun, yet can fit easily into the aesthetic of their living space. With SodaStream Play, families can get creative in the kitchen and enjoy great tasting, better-for-you sparkling drinks in seconds.’’

The introduction of Play follows the launch of the award-winning SodaStream Source in 2012. Yaron Kopel, chief innovation & design officer at SodaStream, said: “After a successful collaboration with renowned global designer Yves Béhar on the Source Drinks Maker, we decided to partner with him once again to create Play – a machine which maintains the design language of the Source family, but still has a clear identity, is priced lower and appeals to more segments of the market.”

The SodaStream Play is available nationally at Myer, Target, David Jones, Harvey Norman, Good Guys and Spotlight stores with an RRP of $99. For a full list of stockists or to purchase online visit www.sodastream.com.au.

Brita 3 Way Water Filter Dispenser makes water smell waterier

There is a serious side to this post where we tell you that Brita has released some pretty handy new appliances. Unsurprisingly in the filtered water category. There’s also a fun side, but we will get to that later.

Firstly, the serious part. Brita has launched its 3 Way Water Filter Dispenser which you can attach to a range of four European designed bench top taps. Your options are Square Neck, Swan Neck, Brita 90 Degree and Brita 45 Degree. Prices start at $379 and top out at $499. It’s a DIY and pretty affordable option. If you buy a lot of bottled water this should pay for itself quite quickly.

The taps connect to the Brita filter below the sink and there is a separate lever for regular tap water and the Brita filtered water. The filter itself is apparently easy to install and requires no additional drill holes or anything messy like that.
