Fresh styling: Patterned bedheads with printed bed linen

Proving that clashing prints can work a treat, the unique Sydney headboard brand NOD paired up with Melbourne boutique bedding label Miss Bettina recently to create two layered bedroom looks. A diamond print is styled back with floral motifs and a geometric print features alongside a check and while the looks strictly shouldn’t work, somehow they really do.

“I’ve shown my headboards previously with solid quilt covers which look lovely, but I thought it was time to show how great my bedheads can look with ornate bedding,” says NOD designer Lauren Esplin. Constructed out of eco-friendly wooden modular tiles (20cm x 20cm), the NOD range of bedheads are conveniently flat-packed for postage and stick easily and directly onto the wall. As an added bonus, they’re ideal for small spaces (as valuable floor space is maintained) and they are wipeable,  making them a great alternative to traditional bedheads.

Plain bed linen would seem like the obvious complement, but the recent shoot illustrates just how experimental you can get with bedding. “Combining my bedheads with the Miss Bettina bedding has created an entirely new look and shows how versatile my range is. I am also really passionate about my product and hope these bedrooms inspire people to reimagine their own rooms,” says Lauren.

“I love Miss Bettina’s new collection and think our ethos is well-aligned, we are both passionate about creating inspirational bedrooms that are creative and unique! I also really enjoy working with other creative companies who are making beautiful things for the home,” says Lauren who hand makes and hand paints all of her pieces to order from her Sydney studio.

We love the ‘border art’, which is printed specifically on the edges of the bedhead. It’s a great way to subtly add some spark. We’re also fans of the resin buttons, inspired by organic river stone shapes. They’re available in marbled and plain matte finishes.

For those feeling a bit overwhelmed by all this choice, Mexsii have collaborated with Mexsii Muses, designers who have each created an inspiration gallery in their unique style.

See stylist Jason Grant’s relaxed coastal feel in one gallery, while Blacklist have curated a minimalist grunge vibe and The Real Estate Stylists have inspiration for those after a classic contemporary look. Each Mexsii Muse design can be bought as is, or you can just steal inspiration for your own style!

Ever wondered how an upholstered bedhead is made?

If there’s one thing we love it’s a look behind the scenes! We also love upholstered bedheads and local craftmanship. So we wanted to share this video from Heatherly Design Bedheads, which are made by hand in Melbourne. Fascinating!

Heatherly launch new Australian wool bedhead

Heatherly Design Bedheads had its early days in a converted woolshed on a working farm north of Melbourne, and owner Goergie Leckey says it was always a given that they would one day do their bit in promoting wool as a finished product.

Their new Kasper bedhead is fully upholstered in a soft handled Australian wool and inspired by a more Scandinavian sensibility. “Teamed with Missoni cushions, Mark Douglass lighting and an Earl Pinto side table, oh and yes some RM boots to complete the Australian theme, we like to think we have captured a bedroom that sings  contemporary Australian style!”

Two Girls and a Container, bringing new homewares to Australia

When Nikki Freeman and Sam Bailey left on a whirlwind mini-break to Indonesia they didn’t realise they would come home with a new and exciting plan. What started out as a “frantic” four-day trip to Bali to source homewares and unique products for their own home renovations, ended as a business trip, and the idea for Two Girls and a Container was born.

Friends for 12 years, Nikki and Sam combined their interior design, art and home renovation experience and launched their online store early this year, with a focus on unique, interesting and eco-friendly products. Although the fateful trip was their first together, Nikki and Sam have been travelling to Indonesia for years to source products for their own homes.

Nikki says she had often thought about how she could bring unique materials and homewares back home for other Australians. “I’ve spent a lot of time over the years thinking of how to turn it into a business.”

Top and tail your bed in style!

Heatherly Design is known and loved for its custom-made, upholstered beds and bedheads, and boy did you go crazy for our custom bedhead competition earlier this month! I’m so impressed with their new product offering: matching foot stools and shoe boxes.

Who doesn’t need somewhere to put all that stuff at the end of their bed, and all the better if it looks fabulous too! My fiance’s shoes and belts would end up in there in a flash!

Even if you don’t have an upholstered bedhead to match (or contrast!), I think one of these would look great. In fact, I’m dreaming up a navy one for my own bedroom as I type… Wouldn’t it be a great place to store all those cushions that have to come off the bed so you can actually get in and sleep in it?!

Heatherly Design products are designed and made in Australia.
