Before & Afters Design Interviews

Before & after: This reno was managed entirely online!

Gold Coast interior designer Mel Hoekstra, of MH Interior Design has worked on many projects but none entirely via email. That was until recently when a London couple sought her out to transform their Queensland home while they were still living in the UK. “My client Rosie discovered my web site via a Google search and felt connected with my approach and enthusiasm, so our design relationship developed from there,” says Mel.

“Our only form of communication was via email while Rosie was living in London, which was until just before handover in January. Often despite the time difference we would have running conversations discussing various aspects of the selections. It worked well for us as we are both thorough and prompt communicators,” says Mel.

Other pivotal tools used throughout the renovation were visual concept boards, floor plans, Pinterest and Dropbox. “Rosie and I worked remarkably well together despite the distance and it helped that she was a great communicator and had profound trust in my design skills,” says Mel.

“The most challenging areas were when I wanted to show samples and texture, particularly for the floor. We had decided the most cost-effective flooring option, to keep within budget, was to use a high-quality vinyl plank which would be installed straight over the top of the existing bamboo,” says Mel. And luckily, Rosie was able to visit a showroom in London to peruse Mel’s exact selection. “The new floor was one of the biggest decisions we had to make as the colour and tone really influenced the mood and feel of the space. Thankfully after they visited the showroom, I got a resounding, confident ‘yes!’”

And while there wasn’t anything hugely objectionable about the original home, Mel was charged with modernising it while imbuing it with a relaxed Australian coastal feel. “The home had great bones, it was a five-bedroom, three-bathroom home with a guest wing and was in need of an update with a basic renovation and cohesive styling. The owners mainly disliked the yellow colour of the bamboo floor in the lounge, dining and kitchen and it was a priority to turn the balcony off their son’s bedroom into a useable space for him to congregate with friends and be protected from the elements,” says Mel.

“Design wise I most love the lounge and dining areas – as soon as you walk through the front door you are greeted by a warm, fresh feeling, not to mention the stunning shell chandelier we installed above the dining table. Those rooms invite you to relax or move through to the beautiful outdoor space as it all flows and connects with ease,” says Mel.

And as for the final reveal, once the family had arrived in Australia, it went remarkably well. “Meeting them in person on the day of handover was wonderful, there was no nerves, and I already felt like we were friends and was confident they would love their new home. Needless to say the family was speechless and couldn’t wait to explore every room.”

Visualise paint colours with new digital render service

Paint colour selection can be one of the trickiest parts of building or renovating. Not only are many people unable to see pictures in their mind (ie. they literally don’t have a mind’s eye), but even those that can often struggle to decipher the differences between shades. And when you consider there are thousands of white variations alone, it’s easy to see why the whole process is rather fraught!

But this is where the entrepreneurial painter Gary Wilson of Imago comes in. Recently launched, Gary’s online offering includes colour consulting and a digital render service that enables people to realistically visualise their future colour schemes thereby avoiding costly mistakes. The service is available for interiors, exteriors and commercial premises too.

Queenslander renders

“With so many colour options out there, it can be daunting trying to choose the right colours. Again and again over the years, I’ve really noticed people are either unable to make a decision on what colours to select or are unsure if the colours they have chosen are right,” says Gary who is also the director of Brisbane’s Applied and Decorative Painting and has been a painter for 25 years.

“I often thought to myself there had to be a better way, to ultimately remove the guess work before people spend all that money painting their place,” says Gary, who offers digital renders illustrating up to three colour schemes from a seriously affordable $49.

“Digital imaging lets you realistically see how colour schemes will look before you spend all that money painting your home. I offer digital renders to all my clients now and they love them and I really believe everyone embarking on a painting project should inform themselves on how it will look in advance,” says Gary.

And renders aside, Imago also has a team of professional colour consultants that can step in if you’re really in a paint quandary. From just $125 per consultation, customers simply answer a quick questionnaire before uploading images of their property after which an online colour consultant delivers colour scheme recommendations within three business days.

Get online interior design advice for just $30!

Launched recently by interior designer Tarmaine Hales, ‘Ask for 30’ lets you ask an interior design question for just $30 a pop! Amazing value, the online concept arose after the designer did some market research before launching her Canberra based business Harlo Design Studio recently.

“Initially it started with me noticing a repeat pattern of friends and family getting in touch to ask me a ‘quick question.’ When I started thinking more seriously about starting up Harlo Design Studio I did a lot of research and asked a lot of questions. I found those that hadn’t engaged an interior designer hadn’t done so primarily for reasons of price and accessibility. Also, many of them felt they didn’t necessarily need a full consultation,” says Tarmaine.

“I felt there was a real gap in the industry to address those people that had done a lot of the ground work themselves, but just needed a little bit of professional help. Also, many people said they didn’t have the time to actually visit a designer,” says Tarmaine.

A straightforward system, clients simply ask a question online at a time and place that suits them before paying for the service upfront using Paypal. “It’s a very simple process. I ask a couple of questions about the client’s style and budget via an online questionnaire. I also provide visuals and an overview of various styles after which the client has the opportunity to upload their photos and submit their question,” says Tarmaine.

“When I started my business I wanted to make interior design accessible to people and price played a real part in this. The intention with the really reasonable price is to get people thinking about their space and investing in it,” says Tarmaine of the service that has been operating for a couple of weeks now. “In the two weeks that it’s been live, the response has been really positive.”

Maker’s Mrkt: Making it easy to shop ‘small’ online

Based in Melbourne, Maker’s Mrkt is the brainchild of New Zealand illustrator Kelly Thompson and its offering includes kitchenware, ceramics, original art, prints, fashion and accessories. If you like to shop small, Makers Mrkt is where it’s at.

Claire Ritchie's 'Perry' throw
Claire Ritchie’s ‘Perry’ throw, $300.

“I’ve worked as a freelance illustrator for 14 years and also a creative consultant for brands and agencies. I’m always someone who likes to shop small and local where possible and I guess I’m lucky to have a circle of friends and acquaintances in the creative industry, many selling great things which made it very easy for me to find beautiful products,” says Kelly who set up the business to make it easier for everyone to have the same access.

Gidon Bing's faceted vases
Gidon Bing’s faceted vase, $125.

“Last year I was looking for a few gifts online and it dawned on me that if you wanted to support local makers and shop small it would be really hard if you weren’t also a maker yourself. How do you find these people if you don’t know their individual websites or happen to stumble across them on the rare occasion that their work is in a physical store? That was the thought that sparked it. The idea was to bring all of these amazing talents onto one platform so people can shop a variety of products without trawling the internet forever!” says Kelly.

Wera Jane lamp
I love this Wera Jane modernist lamp, $650.

Run from Melbourne, the site features a range of products that are small run, ethically produced and often made by hand as well as a ‘Meet the Makers’ section where featured creatives reveal what drives and inspires them. “We like to educate our customers about why the products are so special, how they are made and who makes them. It’s a site that offers beautiful products with heart and we hope it will encourage people to shop from small companies who genuinely appreciate their patronage!” says Kelly.

'Rainbow' print by Rude
‘Rainbow’ print by Rude, $240.

For Kelly, the appeal of the handmade lies in its individuality. “For me personally, it’s that each item is individual and special just for me. I also really appreciate the fact that someone has touched it and considered it and put the time and heart into making it, It’s the love and time behind it that I really appreciate,” says Kelly.

Ghostwares teapot
Ghostwares teapot, $126.

As for Kelly’s favourite makers, she’s a big fan of Wera Jane’s modernist lampshades. “They are made using discarded thread from European fashion factories – the ultimate upcycling!” says Kelly. The New Zealand ceramicist Gidon Bing is another favourite as well as Melbourne based ceramicist Ghostwares. “Ghostwares makes such perfectly formed ceramics it’s amazing that they are made by hand!”

Velvet Spectrum print
Velvet Spectrum’s ‘Foundations of Futures Past’ photographic print, $75.

One of my favourite finds on the site is the ‘Fellows Mobiles’ who makes elegant mobiles that are just as much for adults are they are children. “Kerryn Levy is a sculptor making vases in very organic forms and we also have a range of photographers and illustrators selling prints so there are many to choose from, we love them all in different ways!”

Fellows Mobiles 'Totem' mobile

Friday furniture find: my picks from online retailer Brosa

Have you heard of online furniture store Brosa? Their model is based on doing everything in house, cutting price markups and making furniture available to you cheaper and quicker. What’s not to like?! Today, I’ve rounded up 10 of my favourites from their range. You may notice more than a few gold accents (I’m nothing if not predictable!).

There’s nothing more useful than an extendable dining table and I love the shape of the Romulus (available in black oak and natural oak). It starts as a neat 120cm diameter and extends to seat six comfortably. It’s made of engineered wood and is $1,499.

Extendable round dining tables are few and far between so this is standout for me and I love the leg shape.

We all know I’m in love with the gold accents and this McCoy chest of drawers is a winner. Relaxed luxury at its finest for $749. This would look great in my guest bedroom and is a real statement piece.

I love a sideboard; both practical storage and excellent styling opportunity! This fresh take on rattan (a trend that’s going nowhere soon) is made of solid mango wood. The Bruna sideboard is $1,199.

I love the elegant shape of the Dianna 3-seater lounge for $899, available in 16 colours. Speaking of colours, most of Brosa’s rage comes in more colours than you can shake a stick at. The hardest part is choosing which to go with!

The coffee table is one of the most important furniture choices in your home, if you ask me. The Baroque, in black marble and brass, would look great in a more formal, Hollywood Regency style interior. It looks much more expensive than its $599 price tag.

This large Artemis coffee table is so unique it warrants a mention too. It’s built using wood recycled from ancient Chinese doors and buildings. How cool is that?! This hexagonal find is sure to be a talking point and will set you back $599.

I have two of these Portobello stools/ottomans in grey at home and they are super useful extra seating when we have people over, plus they double as foot stools, and even side tables! They come in 19 colour options so there’s something to blend (or pop) in any room! $187. I love styling two ottomans opposite a lounge, on the other side of a coffee table.

This Gisele queen size gas lift bed has heaps of storage underneath the mattress and a modern, relaxed look. Well priced quality beds can be hard to come by and I think this is a snip at $1,148.

The sophisticated design of the Costa table and chairs looks more like it should be used indoors! Don’t be afraid of using some colour outdoors. In fact, I actively encourage it! This could work on a larger balcony, in a back yard or on a front verandah. $608.

If you’re short on space (but still need somewhere to rest your cuppa), the compact Clint side table makes the perfect bedside. I love the subtle gold accents on this clever and stylish design. It would also work just as well next to a sofa or armchair. $229.

What did you think of my picks? I’d love to know if you’ve bought anything from Brosa?

8 Picks from Castlery: quality furniture without the pricetag

Want quality designer furniture without breaking the bank? Who doesn’t, right? I want a sofa where I will have enough left over for all the cushions I’ll be drowning it in!

Well, Castlery is here to deliver. A newbie on Australian shores, these guys cut out all the middlemen, warehouses and shopfronts. The result? Quality furniture that comes with an honest price – no high markups, no unnecessary extra costs. It means you no longer have to choose between quality, design and price!

Here are some of my favourites from their latest offerings.

Aaron Bed

Fabric bedheads are all the rage right now, and the Aaron bed with its sleek asymmetrical stitched pattern is a perfect fit for any bedroom style. ($999)

Otis Dining Table

Step aside rectangular dining tables – the Otis dining table is here to add some soft industrial vibes with its solid oak top and black powdercoated metal stand. This table is perfect for making a statement at your next dinner party. ($1,499)

Albert Bookshelf, Low

Simple, modern and with heaps of storage space. What else do you want from a bookshelf? The shelves are made from solid rubber wood and feature a clever lip at the back to prevent any of your precious books or vignettes from falling overboard. ($449)

Seb Dining Bench

Add some casual dining vibes to your dinner table with the Seb dining bench. The curved corners soften the Scandi feel and the solid acacia wood with dark grey upholstered cushion create a warm and inviting seat for your tush. ($289)

Naomi Sofa

The curves on this sofa are alluring, the tapered birch wood legs beautifully feminine. This would be at home in an Art Deco living room. ($879)

Alfred TV Console

So industrial, so cool – the Alfred TV console is linear, clean and modern. It has plenty of storage space with its four soft closing drawers, so you can quickly throw in anything lying around before the guests show up. Oh, and the interior is a dramatic red – almost like a classy Louboutin in furniture form! ($829)

Hunter Coffee Table

This one will tug at your French Country heartstrings. Made from reclaimed pine that is salvaged from shipping containers and palettes, the honey coloured coffee table is both beautifully functional and environmentally friendly. ($549)

Roselyn Chair

What a brilliant pop of colour, just perfect for the warmer months. This chair features timeless cross stitching details which not only make it look elegant, but super comfy too! ($269)

Visit Castlery online and in store at Sydney’s Alexandria for their full range – they’re also offering free shipping for a limited time, so be quick.

We love the ‘border art’, which is printed specifically on the edges of the bedhead. It’s a great way to subtly add some spark. We’re also fans of the resin buttons, inspired by organic river stone shapes. They’re available in marbled and plain matte finishes.

For those feeling a bit overwhelmed by all this choice, Mexsii have collaborated with Mexsii Muses, designers who have each created an inspiration gallery in their unique style.

The Block

What do we do about Block spoilers?

It’s very rare I encounter criticism on the internet, which makes a me a lot luckier than many bloggers. But what does happen, and it winds me up a bit I must admit, is people complaining about seeing Block “spoilers” on our social media accounts.

Earlier this month, for example, we published an interview with last series’ Glasshouse winners Shannon and Simon Vos. It seemed nice timing with the new series about to start. What I hadn’t even considered, being that they won back in October, was that I would get a whole host of sad faces and “thanks for ruining it for me” comments on Instagram when I shared the interview. These were from our New Zealand readers who are, incredibly, still only part-way though The Block Glasshouse. Sigh.  Is it really reasonable for an Australian blog to be expected to be careful about revealing the winner of a show more than three months ago?

I totally get that it would be annoying to find out early, but the comments, the real despair, anger and sad faces which people articulate is a little over the top. It’s just a TV show!

But maybe I am being unreasonable? What do you think?

I cannot tell you quite how much our readers love the The Block and our traffic goes through the roof when it’s on (which is excellent news for us bloggers!). So we really want to bring the fans all the latest news, opinions, interviews and any exclusives we might get, as quickly as we can.

I’m really happy we have readers from NZ and all over the world, but I do think it’s a bit much to hold off for a quarter of a year to ever mention who won the episode while another country catches up? Seeing spoilers on social media is just part of life these days isn’t it? And if you really don’t want to know, it is probably wise to unfollow media outlets who write about TV shows relevant to their genre in real-time?

We get the same with those in different states who have to wait an hour or two to watch what we’re watching here in New South Wales and I have more sympathy for that. This is why we will always endeavour to bear all the Australian timezones in mind before posting about winners of room reveals or series. But again, if you really care about not finding out, just stay off Facebook for an hour or two? It’s what my husband does if (God forbid) he has to miss a Formula One race and wants to watch it later without already knowing what happened. Because I can’t promise the rest of the social media-using world will be as careful as we will. Why should they? If you don’t want to know, isn’t it your responsibility to avoid the place where everyone is likely to be talking about something?

Or maybe all our social shares of Block posts should carry a #SPOILERALERT? Would that help perhaps?

I did find this article on CNET which explains how you can avoid social media spoilers if you use Google Chrome. I haven’t tried it myself but it might be worth checking out.

I don’t really understand how people get their knickers in such a twist about TV shows anyway. The sheer venom I see posted by viewers (and directed towards contestants and judges) on The Block Facebook Page never fails to shock me. If you don’t like it, just change channel!

Like this guy, for example, who sent me a private message on Facebook last week:

Screen Shot 2015-01-29 at 3.05.43 PMUm, it’s not advertising (that’s paid for), it’s writing about what my readers are interested in and I can pretty much write about whatever I like, thanks very much!

Love to hear your views below but please, no sad faces?!

Isn’t it time you got all that artwork framed?

Decorate your home without the need of a hammer or drill and without damaging your walls with 3M Command Picture Hanging Strips, which hold up to 7kg. Visit go.3m.com/loveyourwalls/ for decorating inspiration and the chance to win some great prizes.

There are certain jobs we all struggle to get around to: sorting out the spare bedroom, organising the laundry cupboard and, in my case, getting artwork framed.

I finally framed this precious Megan Hess illustration of me as a bride to be

The cluster of cardboard tubes in the corner of my home office has been getting out of hand lately. And it struck me that it’s all kinds of wrong to purchase beautiful things for your walls and then leave them rolled up where you, and nobody else, can enjoy them. So I got tough with myself and promised myself I would get at least 3 things framed this month. This has at least made a dent in the collection (I swear those cardboard tubes are breeding!)

Loveshack by eb&ive

We had a dream of creating our own brand and 10 years later, here we are!” says Nicky Morgan, owner of eb&ive and the new homewares line under it, LOVESHACK.

loveshack nicky_press2

While starting a label is a dream many might have, Nicky and her friend Jules Mckie-Walker actually did it.

loveshack basket

While it’s just Nicky in the business these days, Jules having become a full-time mum, creating the brand was a joint effort between friends and was a “natural progression,” says Nicky. Having shared a love of all things fashion and homewares since they were young, and ending up in the fashion industry in sales and marketing roles, the desire to express their own style only grew. It was 2008 when they made it happen – beginning with a small handmade jewellery collection. A few years later, the label expanded into handbags, clutches, shoes, fashion and small leather goods and really took off. They haven’t looked back since, with LOVESHACK being the most recent addition.

The best Etsy finds from my wedding

I spent a LOT of time on Etsy prior to our wedding and I only really realised quite how much I bought for it via my favourite online shopping destination recently. This is because when people asked me where did I get this or that, the answer was, more often than not, Etsy! So, here’s what I bought and where you can get it. Enjoy…

Swarovski crystal earrings (worn by me). $58.96 from simplychic93. I really wanted them blue and a little different to the usual pearl bridal earrings but couldn’t afford real sapphires. It took two online purchases before I hit the nail on the head with these.
