The supersized bedhead trend & Heatherly Design latest

Celebrating ten years next month, Heatherly Design is celebrating with a fabulous new collection. From a minimal mustard bedhead to a lovely Kate Spade upholstered one and a luxurious tan leather foot stool, it’s arguably their best yet!

The Lucia bed
The Lucia bed

“The Lucia is the sister to our best-selling Rupert with the added bespoke detail of toggles made of leather and timber in the body of the bedhead.  We really wanted to showcase something different in this bedhead and our upholstery team harked back to the duffle coat toggle from years gone by for that truly unique touch,” says owner and director Georgie Leckey.

The design also features the latest trend in beds – an oversized bedhead paired with a smaller base. “Bedheads wider than mattresses are a strong look. You can see this in our Lucia design using a king bedhead on a queen base, and the Lincoln too,” says Georgie.

The Armelle bedhead

With its low profile and mustard hue, the Armelle bedhead is a subtle yet sophisticated design that has feature piping. “It’s the perfect bedhead for those that don’t necessarily think they need a bedhead. It is low, sleek, incredibly comfortable and understated,” says Georgie.

“The Portobello is a black and white theme I have been longing to do for some time, so when this beautiful geometric weave came our way it was the perfect design for this scheme. We have chosen a king bedhead on a queen base and played around with scale,” says Georgie.

And straight to the top of my wish list is the new ‘Tate’ footstool with its buttoned buttery tan leather seat paired with a black wrought iron base. “The frame is made locally here in regional Victoria with our expert upholsterers completing the detailing of the seat,” says Georgie of the design that was inspired by the beautiful gallery stools and lounges you can find inside London’s Tate gallery.

Our small friends haven’t been overlooked either with the new range – the Stella is a gorgeous semicircle design that’s upholstered in fun polka dots. “The Stella children’s range is lots of fun and it’s finished in a stunning Kate Spade fabric. This circle patterned fabric called for a semicircle bedhead and what fun we had with this one personalising each bed with different colours!” says Georgie.

Currently coveting: Moody, oversized florals

Eschewing any nanna associations, florals have never looked as stylish as they do this season. And as with most things in design, it’s all about the execution. Large in scale and in moody hues, we’ll admit that we’re pretty smitten with this bold, romantic aesthetic.

Linen House Marselha quilt cover set: Channeling the paintings of the Dutch masters, this quilt cover features oversized blooms on one side and a plain grey reverse allowing you to mix it up. $199.95.

Flowers for Kate hydrangea linen cushion: We featured the botanical photographic work of the talented Katie Clulow recently and this glorious cushion forms part of her collection. $139.

Bonnie & Neil Banksia timber screen: Great for the demarcation of spaces (particularly in small apartments), this timber screen is even more beautiful in the flesh. $2400.

Heatherly Design Portobello bedhead in Bloom linen: Immerse yourself in a field of flowers before drifting off to sleep. From $850.

Urban Road Rosewater canvas print with black shadow box: Simple and stunning. From $215.

Ellie Cashman ‘Dark Floral II’ black desaturated wallpaper: Blooming beautiful, it’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of this Dutch artist’s work as that’s my bedroom below! From $125 plus shipping.

Art Club Concept ‘Into The Night’ framed print: Part of a collaboration with interior stylist Kerrie-Ann Jones, this affordable art print makes quite the statement. From $199.95.

Beautiful bedheads: Anna Spiro & Heatherly Design collaborate

Featuring interior designer Anna Spiro’s latest textile collection, these new bedheads from Heatherly Design are rather swoon-worthy. The designer’s signature love of pattern is very much on show in the Australian-made range. “My bedroom is my sanctuary. This new collection brings together some of my favourite new fabrics with Heatherly Designs’ loving care, bespoke craftsmanship and attention to detail,” says Anna.

“We are committed to supporting Australian industries and when Heatherly Design approached us about this exciting collaboration, we jumped on board without hesitation. The handcrafted nature of Heatherly’s bedroom furnishings sits perfectly with our artisanal hand screenprinted fabrics. The fact that the entire end product is crafted here in Australia makes us very proud,” says Anna.

Heatherly Designs creator and director Georgie Leckey is similarly chuffed with the collaboration. “I am so proud to introduce this collection, the first of my Art Series. The designs are truly unique and a true reflection of our combined taste and style, as well as a fresh take on our individual creative inspiration.” Georgie has long been a fan of Anna’s work and created these styled shots in collaboration with the designer.

My favourite from the range, the Clareville bedhead, features a deep blue Anna Spiro fabric Kahuna with contrast piping. “The bedhead is teamed with a Kaka Duck fabric Fenwick chair and Adele footstool at the end of the bed finished in the charming Paniola print. This bedroom was inspired by a recent visit to Clareville, a stunning little inlet north of Sydney, where the pace is slow, the boats are charming and the feeling is good! I am sure the end result has more than captured this emotion,” says Georgie.

Featuring plenty of texture and layering, the Luella bedhead looks fabulous finished in Anna’s Leilani fabric and the Genevieve single beds look gorgeous in the designer’s Kahuna Multi fabric too – perfect for a shared girls’ room. “We hope to encourage mums to be more confident in having a bit of fun with fabric selection and colours – Kahuna teamed with Kaka Duck cushions and other stunning accessories is a great way of expressing this,” says Georgie.

Our 10 best beds and bedheads

There’s no doubt about it: a great bed will not only give you a great night’s sleep but also (and we’re all about the looks) look fantastic too. Pick well and invest wisely we say, and buy something which will last you several years. Here are 10 of mine and Jen’s faves and they’re a varied bunch!

The rose gold Eden bed by Incy Interiors ($999 for queen size) is both classical and timeless. Expertly crafted from sturdy and strong metal we absolutely LOVE it. You will have seen this one in countless magazines!

eden_365__59594.1434506559.1280.1280

Another one from Incy Interiors (because we just can’t go past it), the clean simple lines of this new take on the Four-Poster bed (a design collaboration with stylist Megan Morton, from $1,299 for queen size) really make for something unique. Now you just have to pick your colour (custom available)!

I’ve seen the Bailey Bed from Green Cathedral in person, so I can attest it’s an absolute stunner! Constructed from American oak (in either natural oak, ebony or whitewash finish) and beautiful Shibori-dyed leather hides (available in a range of patterns or most Pantone colours), you really have the utmost flexibility when it comes to the design. Available in limited release, prices start fro, $3,099 for a queen. It’s not cheap but it’s not just any old mass-produced bed either.

Upholstered in a feather grey fabric, the Mod Upholstered Bed ($999 for queen size) from West Elm features a slim silhouette, angled solid wood legs and welted details along the corners.

WE AU Mod Bed

Of course, you can add a bedhead to your existing bed to make it a showstopper and while upholstered bedheads are now nothing new, we think the options at Heatherly Designs are stunning. Our latest favourite is the Lincoln, with the option of horizontal or vertical lines and your choice of fabric. Price dependent on size and fabric. They also sell upholstered bed bases.

Lincoln-1264x824

Another great bedhead option is the Maddison from BedNest. Glamorous, strong and more than a little bit sassy, the angled, tapered side wings are studded in either antique brass or silver. Stunning in plain velvet or a geometric pattern, there are a magnitude of fabric and size options available (price dependent on choice).

Maddison

While we’re talking bedheads, Mexsii’s are works of art and not for the faint hearted. The Nomadic Heart is my favourite. How cool is it?! Price on application. Custom options available.

Upholstered isn’t for everyone and some people love good old fashioned timber. Perhaps not surprisingly, you can find the traditional style Ashby Sleigh Bed at Pottery Barn, in rustic pine or rustic mahogany. From $1,974 for queen size.pb-ashby-bed_rusticpineThe Asta Bed by Blockheads Alisa and Lysandra beautifully combines the rawness of timber and the softness of fabric to create a contemporary and sophisticated look and feel. Available from Forty Winks in four colourways, the queen size retails for $2,199.

Australian online-only business Sonno, have a small but great value range of simple upholstered beds. Queen size from $499.

Ever wondered how an upholstered bedhead is made?

If there’s one thing we love it’s a look behind the scenes! We also love upholstered bedheads and local craftmanship. So we wanted to share this video from Heatherly Design Bedheads, which are made by hand in Melbourne. Fascinating!

Heatherly launch new Australian wool bedhead

Heatherly Design Bedheads had its early days in a converted woolshed on a working farm north of Melbourne, and owner Goergie Leckey says it was always a given that they would one day do their bit in promoting wool as a finished product.

heatherly design wool bedhead

Their new Kasper bedhead is fully upholstered in a soft handled Australian wool and inspired by a more Scandinavian sensibility. “Teamed with Missoni cushions, Mark Douglass lighting and an Earl Pinto side table, oh and yes some RM boots to complete the Australian theme, we like to think we have captured a bedroom that sings  contemporary Australian style!”

Top and tail your bed in style!

Heatherly Design is known and loved for its custom-made, upholstered beds and bedheads, and boy did you go crazy for our custom bedhead competition earlier this month! I’m so impressed with their new product offering: matching foot stools and shoe boxes.

Who doesn’t need somewhere to put all that stuff at the end of their bed, and all the better if it looks fabulous too! My fiance’s shoes and belts would end up in there in a flash!

Even if you don’t have an upholstered bedhead to match (or contrast!), I think one of these would look great. In fact, I’m dreaming up a navy one for my own bedroom as I type… Wouldn’t it be a great place to store all those cushions that have to come off the bed so you can actually get in and sleep in it?!

Heatherly Design products are designed and made in Australia.

The winner of the Heatherly Design bedhead is…

Sally Byrne!

I had so many great entries I couldn’t choose the winner! I get too emotionally involved! So I sent a shortlist to Georgie from Heatherly Design and she picked Sally Byrne. I have to admit, her entry was beyond innovative! Top marks for effort! See below her before and after, where she employed some positive visualisation techniques (as well as some blu-tack and string) and it worked!
