Sweet dreams are made with the right bedside table: 10 stylist’s picks

Interior stylist Georgia Duncan uses her designer eye to curate a roundup of some very stylish bedside tables. From budget friendly, to higher end splurge, to Australian made, there’s something for everyone here.

Btd Gridwork Side Table $1,150.

The Gridwork Side table is Melbourne made, and has a wicked industrial edge. Using products traditionally found in industrial settings, the toughened, yet oh so design savvy fluted glass, paired with either stainless steel or a powder coated black frame, creates a very streamlined, minimalist, yet hardwearing option. Storage shelves create nooks for your favourite books, and any other special items.

Brosa Slim Bedside Table $319

Available in three colour ways, the Slim Bedside Table displays a great amount of form and function. The on-trend curved legs create an ‘ongoing’ effect, while the drawer is a perfect place to stash all those necessary, yet unsightly items.

Kristina Dam Studio Curve Side Table from Design Stuff $629

The Powder coated steel Curve side table, takes on the on trend circular legs, while the top is perfect size for your lamp and personal items. Below, there is space for some magazines, or to be left empty for that perfect minimalist look.

HAY Tray Table Small $350

Versatile throughout the house, but very useful in the bedroom, the modern classic tray table from HAY comes in many colours. It’s aesthetically light and you could always nice basket placed underneath if you needed extra storage.

Heimur Design Origins Side Table $825

With its on trend woven shelf, and functionality of a single drawer, the Origins side table is definitely another example of form and function. Made in Melbourne from Australian Messmate, there are also custom timber options available. This is a do not pass go option if you are looking for a small piece of storage and a great looking piece. 8-to-10 weeks lead time.

Ikea Nikkeby $79

The Nikkeby bedside drawers are perfect for a room needing something a bit more hardy to withhold the test of time. Coming in a classic olive green, these are sure to suit a range of bedrooms, and come in at the budget-friendly end of the scale.

Made Of Tomorrow FOLD bedside table NZ $99, plus $22 international shipping

For those who either want to save on space or have enough storage already, the Fold Bedside is literally the perfect option. Made in New Zealand from powder coated aluminium, they are even hardy enough to go in bathrooms or outdoors. Base models come in white and black, but there is a large range of custom colours too. With a shelf for your lamp and phone, and one for your book and hand cream, this really is a great option.

McMullin & Co Agatha Bedside Table $599

With its rattan finish, and teak frame, the Agatha Bedside is a space saving storage soloution like no other. Rather than a drawer, this bedside has a fold down door.

Sarah Ellison Pierré $975

A definite piece for the bedroom, the Pierré has a playful presence. Designed to make a statement, with a marble top, rattan shelf, steel structure and teak spherical feet.

West Elm Quinn Lacquer Nightstand $599

My master bedroom refresh with new Castlery bedside tables

Sponsored by Castlery

It’s been about 18 months since we gave our master bedroom a moody new look with deep navy walls and a luxe custom velvet bedhead. While I still love it and have zero regrets about going dark, I felt it was time for a little refresh.

Updating a space and giving it a new look and feel definitely doesn’t have to mean replacing everything and starting again (and it’s actually a bit like a hobby for me!). I can’t imagine painting over those navy walls (never say never!) but I wanted to lighten things up a little and go for a bit more of a casual vibe, and have done so with some new white and timber bedsides and lamps from Castlery.

A new design from the online brand, the Isla bedside tables are a generous 60cm wide and if you have the space, I fully recommend going as wide as possible with your bedsides. It means you can have bigger lamps too.

Our previous bedside tables were navy, and while they blended in perfectly with the dark walls, the white of these new ones lifts the room and I like it! It’s also the first introduction of timber to this room from the drawer fronts. Just the perfect amount if you ask me!

Similar to the previous ones, these also have brass handles and legs, in keeping with the many other gold elements in our home, like tapware, kitchen cabinet handles and the coffee table. But I love how the white is tying in with the plantation shutters and artwork and lighter bed linen makes it seem more fresh and relaxed.

The bedsides also have two drawers and I’m all about storage. Much as I love some of those fancy options with nothing more than a shelf, I just can’t do it. I need to be able to hide stuff away and lots of it: skincare, books, magazines, my laptop, headphones, and all the other things I can’t leave out because they’ll look messy and my toddler will walk off with or break them! I’m also loving the extra width of these for both the styling opportunities and because I can easily put a laptop (I watch too much Netflix in bed. So shoot me!) down next to my morning coffee, night cream and jewellery (as well as the stuff that’s just there to look pretty!). Never underestimate the importance of a well styled bedside table to elevate your bedroom!

And of course, it helps that I can swiftly sweep all the “stuff” on top of my husband’s into a drawer (did I just say that out loud?!) when it’s looking too messy!

I’m super impressed with the quality of these furniture pieces and they were really simple to assemble (basically, just attaching the legs). They have decent metal runners, the drawers have a soft-closing mechanism and they’re very substantial and heavy. Bedsides get a real workout and daily use so I do encourage spending a bit more on these otherwise they’ll quickly show their age or you’ll become annoyed with bad quality drawer runners and the like. The two-year warranty on these is good for peace of mind.

There’s also a matching dresser, sideboard and TV console in the Isla collection.

This isn’t my first experience with Castlery and many readers ask about our Adams sofas when I show them on Instagram. I’ve had these for over a year now so I feel I’m in a good position to give a thorough Castlery review! The honest truth is, they look exactly the same as they did when we got them. Yes, they’re the palest grey and I have two grubby boys, but the two can coexist!

The sofas’ saving grace is that they have removable, machine washable covers. All the seat cushions have been washed at least twice now and although it’s a workout getting them back on because they’re a snug fit (do not attempt this job alone!), it’s totally possible and they look like new. I give any stains a spray with Koh, wash them on a cold wash and then leave them to air dry (for fear of shrinkage in the dryer). While we are on the subject of Koh (and no this is not sponsored), I get the majority of Vegemite fingerprints and the like off using a spray of this, which is why the covers have only been washed twice!

The question I get asked the most about this sofa is whether it’s comfy and that’s a hard one to answer because it’s so subjective. Obviously I wouldn’t buy an uncomfortable couch, but it isn’t a big squashy, feather-filled one so it’s not that kind of comfy. We used to have one of those and while it was comfy on the face of it, it actually lacked support too, and we really like the height of the backs and arms on the Adams. And of course I love the gold legs (but you can also choose silver or black).

The Adams now also comes in a darker grey (but don’t feel you have to choose this for practical reasons!) or three different velvet colours including navy (hmmm…. navy velvet and brass legs… you’re speaking my language!).

The seat cushions are foam, which is why they don’t sag and they look the same as they did the day we got them. This is handy when your kids jump (and run) on the couch, no matter how many times you tell them not to! The back cushions are fibre-filled and squashier, but equally haven’t lost their shape over time. I haven’t had to wash any of those covers which is, frankly, a miracle!

Another great thing about the Adams is that it comes in a multitude of different combinations, pretty much as long as you’d like, with or without right/left chaise and there’s also a footstool/coffee table and an armchair.

You can’t physically try a Castlery sofa as they don’t have a showroom to keep costs down, and I know this scares some people, but you can order free fabric swatches and they do have a 14-day returns policy if you aren’t happy. You must keep the original packaging and receipt, the item must be undamaged and you have to pay for return delivery. Refunds are processed within seven days.

There are a lot of benefits to buying furniture online with Castlery’s model in my opinion. Their stock levels are up to date and they hold a lot of stock, so you’re unlikely to be waiting 12 weeks for your sofa! If they say it’s in stock, it is! If it’s not in stock, you’ll see a realistic timeframe for when the item could leave the warehouse. And the prices? Hard to beat for the quality. Our extended chaise sectional (comfortably seats five) is $2,169 and our two-seater (easily seats three people), $959. That’s a lot of seating for just over $3,000!

When moisturiser looks this good, it encourages you to use it!

Sponsored by Palmolive

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I won’t apologise for picking many of my bathroom and beauty products based on their packaging! Some (my husband) would call it me being anally retentive, but as well as having a genuine enthusiasm for great packaging design, if it doesn’t look good, I’m not leaving it out. Simple! Garish products have no place in my home, and luckily there are a lot of great options out there!

IMG_20160523_101134

Palmolive Oil Infusions is making its debut into the Australian moisturiser market today with its brand new body moisturisers and washes. The luxurious range is aimed at women who love to treat themselves with speciality skin care but often find it too expensive for everyday use. And it’s true that finding a body moisturiser that ticks all the boxes (hydrating yet non-greasy, affordable, great smelling and last but not least, in good looking packaging!) can be tough. The Oil Infusions Body Moisturisers (from RRP $5.99) are inspired by the growing essential oils trend and enriched with an infusion of essential oils and botanical extracts including avocado oil, jojoba oil, jasmine extract, macadamia oil, rose oils and citrus oils.

Without further ado, let’s look at the packaging. Does it pass the Interiors Addict bedside/bathroom test? The apothecary style brown pump bottle looks classy, expensive and almost rustic. It’s neutral enough to blend into your interior while still looking lovely, and leaving it out means you’re much more likely to actually use it than if you hid it away in a cabinet. I’ll admit I’m terrible at remembering to body moisturise. When it comes to moisturising my face and applying sunscreen, I’m religious about it, but from the neck down, I’m a little neglectful, despite the best intentions!

This one’s now staying firmly on my bedside so I can moisturise before bed. It feels like a little aromatherapy ritual and that’s something I could commit to every night, right?

IMG_20160523_100429

My other top tip for remembering is to keep a moisturiser close at hand on your desk, so you can at the very least use it on your arms and hands. Love a little multi-tasking moment, hydrating while tackling the old writer’s block!

Palmolive are inviting you to create your own #MoisturiserMoment. Use the hashtag to share via social media how you take a moment to give back to your body and mind with the new Palmolive Oil Infusions range. Available at Coles, Priceline pharmacies and independent supermarkets

7 common replicas and what the real deal will cost you

Replicas are absolutely everywhere, and when you’re under the impression that the real thing costs an arm and a leg… well I don’t exactly blame some of you for going with the cheap option. However, sometimes the real deal isn’t actually that exy and when they last a lifetime (versus a year or two) and support the actual mastermind who created the design, it may just be worth investing. Below we fill you in on how much seven commonly copied pieces of furniture actually cost. And some are less than you’d think!

At $220, the familiar Componibili 3 Round (front left in the image below) available through Space Furniture, is surprisingly affordable. Coming in many colours and configurations, the 30-year-old design from Kartell is flexible, functional and practical. Slotting into any home setting, be it the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen or living room, it is also displayed at The Museum of Modern Art in New York and at the George Pompidou Centre in Paris.

Componibili 3 Round

Originally designed for Carl Hansen & Son in 1949, the CH24 Wishbone Chair (Jen’s favourite) is a light, sculptural dining chair that is also suitable for relaxed sitting away from the table. The seat is hand-woven in paper cord (unbleached/natural or black) and the frame is available in a variety of hardwoods and coloured finishes. Prices start at $1,100 per chair, and can be purchased through Cult Design.

Not convinced it’s worth it? See how much work goes into one chair in this video and you may change your mind!

The Adnet Mirror by Gubi is the epitome of luxury. Designed in the ’50s, the distinctive, round leather mirror with equestrian-inspired detailing comes in three sizes and three strap colours (black, olive or brown). Available from Cult Design, prices start at $1,020.

Originally designed for exterior use in French bistros, the Tolix Stool 65cm is perfect for breakfast bars (though we’re a little sick of seeing replicas everywhere on account of how mass produced and cheap they’ve become). With a rigid stackable design, lending itself to a variety of applications, it comes in a large range of finishes and colours. Available through Thonet, prices start at $390. And the real deal is so much nicer and less disposable!

A classic piece of mid-century furniture, the Eames Moulded Plastic Side Chair with Eiffel Base DSR ($615) from Living Edge is as stylish and useful today as when it was designed in 1950. The organic shape and sophisticated lines of the chair, with the streamlined Eiffel Tower wire base, work anywhere in the home. The shell seat has a high, flexible back, a deep seat pocket and a waterfall front edge, so you can sit comfortably even for extended periods. A multitude of colour choices can be paired with a chrome, black or white base. Beware the cheap replicas whose screws fall out. Many are actually quite dangerous!

Widely considered one of the most significant designs of the 20th century, the Eames Classic Lounge & Ottoman also comes with a significant price tag, $7,990 to be exact! That said, this is a substantial piece of furniture. In continuous production since its introduction in 1956, this timeless design is constructed to last lifetimes. Entirely hand-assembled, the seat is balanced on a five-star, die-cast aluminum base with adjustable stainless steel glides for uneven floors. It is available in a range of finishes from Living Edge.

Noguchi himself described his Coffee Table as his best furniture design, no doubt because it is extremely reminiscent of his bronze and marble sculptures of the time. Designed for Vitra, it has a glass tabletop that rests on two identical wooden elements placed at right angles. Available in three finishes from Space Furniture, prices start at $3,470.

Interiors Addict’s 10 best bedsides

From retro and industrial to quirky and pretty, we have a bedside table for every style and every budget!

This Mid-Century Bedside Table ($399) from West Elm borrows its slim legs, angled face and understated retro details from iconic ’50s and ’60s furniture silhouettes. With antique bronze finish knobs for an unexpectedly luxe twist, it is made from FSC-certified wood and is available in three colourways.

I love, love, love the Componibili 3 Round bedside (front left in the image below) and you’ve probably seen it everywhere, with many stores having replicas! However, the original is still surprisingly affordable at $220. Coming in many colours and configurations, the 30-year-old design from Kartell is flexible, functional and practical.

Designed by two of our favourite Blockheads, twins Alisa and Lysandra, the Asta Bedside Table for Forty Winks is Australian made but Scandinavian inspired. Part of a four-piece bedroom suite, but available individually for $749, it combines the rawness of timber with eye-catching rose gold detailing.

Magazine rack-slash-bedside table, the unique Three Legged Magazine Stand features carefully shaped steel plates to create an angle to place magazines, while leaving a flat top surface with enough space for a drink. Available from Urban Couture and coming in both black and white, it retails for $349.

I’m not normally one for bedside tables that don’t have any drawers (I can’t be the only one who accumulates mess that needs to be hidden?!), but if space is at a premium, these Kerr Stools ($289) in rose pink and black are a gorgeous option. Available from Barnaby Lane, they are made from iron and timber.

The MUSKEN Bedside Table from IKEA is a total bargain, costing just $59. Sturdy, practical and working with most interiors, you can also purchase the matching wardrobe and drawers for the full look.

The Swing Table ($279.95) by 6ixty is one-of-a-kind cool, with both colour accents (ash with grey, white, red or yellow) and natural wood tones. Practical too, it features an angled handle for easy moving and two storage drawers. It is available from Zanui.

Made in Melbourne from Tasmanian Oak veneer and a powdercoated tube steel frame (in cloudy blue or soft white), the Oliver Side Table ($499) is minimal and versatile. Available from Hunting for George, there’s also a corresponding bed and bench if you want the whole set.

HFG-OLIVER-SIDE-TABLE-1

This shimmery number is sure to make a statement, in either a gorgeous coppery bronze or luxe clear and smoke colour tints. Fitted with three drawers and featuring a classic square front, the Optical Bedside Table from Domayne is a real show stopper. Price available in store or upon request.

Small spaces need great storage and the Rigby Sidetable ($400) from Milkcart delivers in spades. With a narrow footprint, but deep storage, it fits your iPad, magazines and remote with room to spare. Available in matte or gloss white laminate and sustainable timber with a Tassie Oak trim, you can also choose from a silver button, black knob, handmade leather pull or timber handle.
