Tour time! Step inside Bluebellgray’s gorgeous Scottish studio

Famed for her beautiful watercolour print textiles, Scotland’s Fi Douglas graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 2005 before launching her Bluebellgray brand to much success. A fixture inside the UK department store stalwart John Lewis, the range is now available at Myer, much to the delight of many Aussies. Our Jen, for one, is a massive fan!

“Bluebellgray is all about colourful, uplifting, design – it’s about doing florals in a modern way and thinking of textiles as artwork. The Australian aesthetic is exactly what I dream of when I’m designing the products, I love that so many Australians embrace colour as I always think that bright and fresh colours work so well in the beautiful light and sunshine,” says Fi, whose paintings run the gamut from traditional watercolour florals to more abstract designs.

“I always want my designs to have a fun edge to them, they are not too serious, they have a contemporary edge but can work in any era of home. I’d like to think they sit really well with the relaxed Australian lifestyle and the colours will sing in sunny Australian homes.”

Fi’s career path started at university before she worked in the interior textiles industry for a couple of years before setting up her own solo venture which is now stocked across the world. “I started the company with just six cushions, not a lot of confidence, a huge amount of energy and determination and a very understanding and supportive husband!” says Fi.

She credits her early success to a feature in Elle Decor and also the support of the aforementioned John Lewis. “I was featured by Elle Decor magazine in the very early days which was incredible, it really got my name out there and got me noticed by some amazing stockists. I’m always very grateful to them. John Lewis has also really been instrumental to growing the business – they took me under their wing in the early days as part of their ‘design collective’ and over the years I’ve grown with them to become a fully-fledged brand in my own right with my bedding stocked in all their UK stores along with a host of other products.” The brand also offers a full lifestyle collection including tableware, lampshades, wallpaper and artwork.

The designer’s inspirational journey now sees her employ a team of 12 who all work out of a stunning Scottish studio and showroom. “My studio is two floors of a beautiful old townhouse in the West End of Glasgow with huge, double-aspect windows and high ceilings. It’s flooded with natural light which is so important to me – I’m a real fan of light and space as I swear they help me be more creative.” The vibrant space features a large painting table in the middle. “It’s very colourful — there is always lots to see as we are working on new things all the time,” says Fi.

Jen’s lust list 31.01.17

I’m generally more of a plain linen girl but I could be persuaded to change for this Bluebellgray quilt set. The Scottish brand, which I’ve long been a fan of, is now available in Australia at Myer. Floral and colour fans, gets amongst it!

On the other end of the spectrum, the popular SMEG small appliances range (entry level SMEG as I like to call it!) are now available in white due to popular demand! I’m guessing that’s because people like me couldn’t decide which of the gorgeous pastel hues to commit to. Fret no more! From $179 for the 2-slice toaster, from all good department stores.

I discovered artist Annie Everingham on Instagram this week (don’t you love Insta for that?!) via those stylish folks at Fenton & Fenton (who stock her work). I fell for this limited edition print, An Abstraction of Patchwork Terrain ($699). Isn’t it gorgeous? Annie lives in Newcastle, NSW.

Pottery Barn Kids have some lovely new things in for kid’s rooms! How cute is this Ceramic Bunny Mirror ($129) which will give your little one a bunny nose whenever they stand in front of it?! Plus there are hooks to keep precious jewels and hairbands off the floor.

And I know Sebastian would love this Organic Mason Dino Friends Sheet Set, from $99 (not that he has a big boy bed for them yet). I’m a big fan of anything which is so cute that kids will like it, but not still erring on the muted side so mum will too. What do you mean their rooms should be all about them?!

I must be in a really colourful mood this week, eh?! How gorgeous is this trinket box ($55) from Marks & Spencer? Did you know they ship free to Australia for orders over $100? Yes, homewares as well as fashion! I have a thing for fancy boxes like this. How better to keep/hide all those little bits and pieces together? Plus, gold.

This new brass-look side table from Kmart is a snip at $29! They have a whole load of new furniture and homewares dropping at the end of this week which are bound to sell out fast.

Last but not least, I can always find something to add to my basket on Etsy! This magnolia wall hanging is great for so many reasons. It’s lightweight (great for renters who can’t knock holes in walls), you don’t need to pay for framing or worry about heavy frames falling off the wall (wouldn’t it be lovely in a little girl’s nursery?), it’s gorgeous, botanical and timeless. And who doesn’t love magnolias? $75 from My Bearded Pigeon via Etsy. There are other designs too, including cacti, which are definitely having a moment!

I’ll be back with more favourite finds next Tuesday!

Shop and raise money for charity without paying an extra cent

Sponsored by pink.org.au

It’s almost too good to be true, but it’s not. What if I were to tell you that you could shop online at major retailers where you’d usually make purchases anyway and in doing so, without it costing you a cent, a donation is made to life-changing breast cancer research? You can. And it gets better. You’ll also benefit from special deals and cashback on your purchases. Amazing!

This week, I’ve been checking out pink.org.au for myself and not only have I had my usual retail therapy fix, I’ve been raising money for a charity close to my heart (my aunt has breast cancer a few years ago and is happily now in the clear after treatment), the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). Talk about a win-win situation!

First, I hit up Marks & Spencer (12% cashback), the iconic department store in my motherland, England, that ships to Australia. It’s one of my favourite places to buy baby clothes for Sebastian and they have a most excellent range of dungarees (or overalls as you call them here!).

Still thinking like a mum (what happened to buying clothes for myself online?!) I headed to Appliances Online (up to 1.6% cashback), where I often shop too, and bought a food processor, because we are fast approaching the time for introducing solid food (can’t wait for that mess…).

Don’t worry though, this interiors addict wanted to know what was on offer in the home category and I wasn’t disappointed. I bought a nice white waffle quilt cover for our spare bed (a classic!) from Adairs (7.2% cashback). Incidentally, they also have their own NCBF range, so if you buy that via pink.org.au, you’re helping the charity not once but twice!

Then I spent far too long browsing the amazing range at Amara (up to 8% cashback), another UK-based site who ship here (free shipping on orders over $200 too), and sell luxury homewares. I didn’t previously know they shipped internationally so that was a great discovery. My haul included salt and pepper shakers, a gold stapler for my home office desk and an odds and ends trinket dish, all by Kate Spade New York. Divine! I also couldn’t resist a stunning Bluebellgray Eric cushion.

Before my purchases even arrived, I started getting emails about my cashback, letting me know how much had been credited to my Pink account. It really is brilliant! And all the more incentive to head back to the site to shop again and help raise more money.

It’s not just shopping you can do on pink.org.au though, you can also order takeout. We always use Menulog anyway, so from now on we’ll be using Menulog via Pink (2.4% cashback), knowing a bit of cash is going to charity too. Why wouldn’t you, frankly? Some of the other online stores we often frequent which we’ll now be browsing via pink.org.au are The Iconic, Bonds, Asos and Virgin Australia.

It’s very simple to use pink.org.au. Once you sign up, you simply access the various stores via the Pink site and complete the transaction as normal.

It doesn’t cost you anything and it’s quick and easy to sign up. Join for free now!
