Young Designer: Connie Condylios, Greg Natale Design

Our Young Designer series aims to inspire those who are yet to get their first foot on the ladder in this fiercely competitive industry.

Many graduates would give their right arm to be where 25 year-old Connie Condylios is. The interior designer at Greg Natale Design impressed her well known boss with her initiative and good work ethic.

She completed her Advanced Diploma in Interior Design at the respected Design Centre, Enmore, where Greg also studied before her, and worked for interior designer Thomas Bucich throughout her studies.

She explained how showing initiative and not being afraid to ask, got her where she is today.

Coco Republic Design School goes beyond Sydney with online courses

Coco Republic Design School, in partnership with Design Centre Enmore (Sydney Institute TAFE) has launched a new way to study interior design. It offers students nationally accredited qualifications in Interior Decoration Essentials 101 or Colour for Interiors 401, in an online learning environment specifically designed to accommodate time-poor, interstate and international students.

Mum of two and self-confessed interiors addict Lisa Quinn-Schofield, from WA, is one of the first to enrol. “When I found out the Coco Republic Design School had moved online, I could not wait to get started,” she said.

“As a young mum balancing the daily demands of two little ones, plus a part-time job, the online course allows me to log in late at night or whenever I have a free moment.

Coco Republic Design School goes online for those outside of Sydney

It’s been in the works behind the scenes for a long time so it was good to hear Coco Republic Design School will launch its first online courses in January.

Want to study but cannot find the time or live too far away to make it to Coco’s Sydney studios? This initative by Coco Republic Design School and Design Centre Enmore, offers accredited learning online in a flexible and dynamic new learning environment.

Two of the school’s courses are currently available: Interior Decoration Essentials and Colour for Interiors. Interior Decoration Essentials will cost $1,750 ($1,000 less than attending the course in person) and if you book before 21 December, there’s an early bird rate of $1,575.00.

Feel good Sunday

I received the loveliest email this evening from interior design graduate Louise Reeves and it has made my weekend. Earlier this year, she asked for my help in breaking into the industry and, after seeing some photos of her impressive work, I was happy to give it a shot. I wrote this post, which was read by Lisa Wright, interior designer and owner of Peponi Home, who promptly gave her a job. Don’t you just love that?

Louise says: “Jen, thank you so much for profiling me on your site, otherwise I wouldn’t be in this fabulous job.” Aw! Sounds like Louise is off to a great start assisting Lisa. “I’m one of very few people who graduated from Enmore last year to be working in the industry. It’s obviously a tricky time and there aren’t too many job offers so a lot of my friends from TAFE have gone back to do more study. I feel so lucky to have gotten a job, especially one as fantastic as this and I have learnt so much about the industry and about design in such a short space of time. Lisa is a great mentor, she’s in a position I would definitely love to be in later in my career.”

Congratulations Louise and well done Lisa for giving this bright spark her first step on the interiors industry career ladder! I love how small the interiors world can be, especially online, and it’s great to be able to bring  like minded people together through my blog. I am going to bed happy to round off this week! Jen x

Can you give Louise her first foot in the door of the interiors industry?

Last week I met (well, virtually) design graduate and Interiors Addict fan Louise Reeves, who is desperately looking for her first break in the industry. Can you help?

Check out these pictures of a bachelor pad she decorated and styled for her friend. The girl has potential, right?!

The 23 year old, who graduated from the prestigious Design Centre Enmore in November, says: “My dream is to have my own business; a homewares and furniture store in Sydney that I could run my interior design service out of. I would also love to get into product design and design furniture. But right now I am looking for paid or unpaid work, anything to gain experience and get my foot in the door.

“I am more partial to the decoration side of interiors as opposed to construction so to work with likeminded people would be fantastic. I am really willing to do any kind of work in order to gain access to the industry and understand that I will have to work my way up from the bottom.”

Louise describes her style as eclectic, bold and modern. “I love to use a healthy dose of colour and pattern and believe that the best spaces can come about by taking risks and pushing boundaries. I am inspired by the elegance of Hollywood regency and vintage Art Deco decor and, in my travels to Sweden, by the beautiful simplicity of Scandinavian design.

“My favourite designers are Brendan Wong, Kelly Wearstler, Greg Natale, Thomas Hamel, Jonathan Adler, Burley Katon Halliday and Tom Dixon.”

She got off to a great start by winning a ticket to a seminar with Melinda Ashton Turner and Chelsea Hing at decoration + design later this week, in an Interiors Addict giveaway. If you can offer Louise any work experience, an internship, mentoring or assisting work, please email Jen at [email protected]
