Real home: Perth family abode has boutique hotel vibe

Home to a dentist and his young family, this chic home in the well-heeled Perth suburb of Applecross features a dreamy palette of soft grey, stormy blue, white and gold paired statement designer pieces.

Lounge room

“The clients were looking for a chic and sophisticated interior with an international flavour. They wanted the home to feel like a boutique hotel that was also conducive to entertaining family, friends and colleagues,” says the project’s interior designer Nickolas Gurtler.

Nikolas Gürtler Applecross project

A new build, Nickolas came on board when the home was near completion. “The clients purchased the home almost completed, so we basically had an empty shell in which to work with,” says Nickolas of the sophisticated spaces.

Master suite
The master suite features Kelly Wearstler’s iconic Linden table lamps and custom silk wall panels

“One of our favourite spaces is the dining room, with a focus on mixing different geometric elements. We designed custom wall panelling for a modern take on formality, which references the lines in the rug. These clean lines are broken up with the chaos of the chandelier, and the soft lines of the dining table and chairs,” says Nickolas.

As for the part of the project that Nickolas feels was most successful, he is most taken with the master suite. “It feels so cosy when you walk inside but also incredibly plush and luxuriant. We achieved this by layering an Art Deco velvet bed in front of custom silk wall panels and surrounding the entire room in a soft grey grass cloth wallpaper,” says Nickolas.

“We also mixed organic shapes and patterns like the Memphis inspired table lamps and bed linen by Kelly Wearstler with geometric counterparts like custom wall cabinetry and a Platner table from Knoll. You can really feel the personality when you walk into the space,” says Nickolas.

The statement lamp: Why invest & our top five picks!

While we love a bargain, we’re also firm believers in splashing out on statement pieces too, should your budget allow. And while it’s not the first item that springs to mind when you think of a hero piece, the statement lamp holds an important place in modern interior design. But when a single lamp can cost up to five figures, is it worth the investment?

Tom Dixon Bell table lamp in copper
Tom Dixon Bell table lamp in copper, $1080

“I believe a statement lamp is definitely worth the investment. It adds extra character to a setting and is another element to assist in carrying through colours and finishes – brass accents for example. A cheap piece will only bring the rest of the setting down instead of adding life to a space,” says Andrew Algar, owner of Contents International Design.

Kelly Wearstler Linden table lamp, $2085

Chosen well (a neutral tone is usually a smart purchase), a good quality high-end lamp will give back many times over the years. “It is also a piece that, if invested in, can be utilised in other rooms down the line if you change your décor or move to a new house,” says Andrew.

And while there is amazing variety these days, as with any hero piece, you must make sure it doesn’t compete with the rest of the room. “If you were to keep the sofa, chairs, and table quite simple, a feature lamp will be the standout and lift the entire setting as well as providing much needed mood lighting too,” says Andrew.

Atollo lamp
Designed in 1977, Vico Magistrett’s Atollo lamp is a cult classic. From $1724

Like dark paint colour and bold prints, Andrew encourages you to dive right in when it comes to making the purchase. “Look for elements in a lamp that will accent something already in your room to help it carry through, and don’t be afraid to go over scale. If you’re investing in a feature piece you want it to be noticed!”

Current crush: Newly renovated Melbourne bar The Kilburn

Housed in a Victorian-era bank in the Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn, whisky bar The Kilburn received the makeover treatment recently at the deft hands of interior stylists Jacqui Moore and Kristel Griffiths Marshall. “I would describe the vibe as Mid-Century New York with a sprinkling of West Coast cool,” says Kristel, of the highly covetable space.

VIP area complete with Kelly Wearstler wallpaper and feature brass chandelier

“The Kilburn was already an established bar but the interior was sparse, masculine and not particularly comfortable. The space was also vast and the brief was to make it feel intimate, sexy, cool and luxurious on a tight budget,” says Jacqui, who certainly achieved that. With its gorgeous use of blue (from peacock to inkier tones), the space combines leather, velvet, brass and marble for a luxe, sexy vibe. It’s certainly a must-visit, the next time we’re in Melbourne!

We’re loving that moody peacock blue!

“We wanted this huge space to feel sophisticated and moody, so it was all about building layers of tone on tone and texture. Inky blues, peacock and minty greens form the base palette and we stained the floorboards and exposed timbers Japanese black. We used leather and velvet for the upholstery and for the final flourish we added highlights of brass and marble,” Jacqui adds.

The swoon-worthy brass tile bar

As for their favourite part of the project, the custom 10-metre brass tile and marble bar is a standout. “The bar features 1,100 stacked subway tiles, which are lit from above and give the place a massive injection of glamour. Our custom “Hustle” neon sign in the back bar was designed to add a youthful, playful element too,” says Kristel.

And one of the more interesting aspects of the renovation is that despite its expensive good looks, it was executed with a tight budget — paint was a key element. “The transformational qualities of paint are amazing. Before the makeover, the bar was full of exposed brown-stained timbers. By painting them inky blue and black we were immediately able to create a super-sexy space without breaking the bank,” says Jacqui.

VIP area

Jacqui’s favourite aspect, aside from the bar, is the enormous brass chandelier that hangs over the VIP platform and is complemented by Kelly Wearstler wallpaper and artwork by Sydney artist Dina Broadhurst. “It’s sculptural by day and at night it has this beautiful golden glow.”

Kelly Wearstler’s chocolate line is too pretty to eat

It’s an oft-heard phrase but Kelly Wearstler’s chocolate collaboration really is too good to eat. The American interior design doyenne has joined forces with the Californian chocolatier Compartés to create a range that is pretty spectacular, both outside and in. Designed by Kelly, the range takes inspiration from her interiors, luxe accessories, art designs, patterns and motifs and we want one of each!

Abstract art for the eating! Pain splattered dark chocolate.

“Dark Chocolate is my favourite indulgence. I have long been a fan of Compartés for their thoughtful approach to natural ingredients and beautiful packaging. The bars are distinctive and elevated, like little works of art handcrafted in Los Angeles,” says Kelly.

The range includes inventive flavours such as dark chocolate crystal salt and pistachio, paint splattered dark chocolate, white chocolate maple walnut and dark chocolate with chilli, mango and coconut.

“The spirit and luxury of California is so entrenched in my aesthetic and it felt like a perfectly fun and organic fit to collaborate with a fellow Los Angeles-based brand. We wanted to curate a vibe that felt special, spirited and cool. The flavours are inspired from my favourite spots in and around LA, from my morning espresso fix to the Malibu farmer’s market. Each bar is a little love letter to California style,” says Kelly who hand-selected the imaginative flavours.

Covet my coffee table: with interior designer Ioanna Lennox

Interior designer Ioanna Lennox knows how tricky styling coffee tables can be and she’s a professional! So today, we’re sharing what’s on hers as well as her tips on making yours beautiful.

ioanna lennox coffee table 1

“Coffee tables are one of those things that people struggle with. They need to be functional and practical and look good at the same time. Function over form or form over function? How do we combine both? Personally, I’m a big fan of ottomans as coffee tables. Large ottomans that can have one or two trays on them, piles of favourite books and personal artefacts that mean to something to us. Or even small ottomans that are striking and make a huge impact but prevent things from getting too messy or cluttered because of their compact size.

ioanna lennox coffee table 2

“In our home, I’ve opted for the latter. My husband hates coffee tables in formal living areas and believes less is more. So rather than going for a more traditional coffee table, we’ve compromised on having a small French-inspired ottoman serve as a coffee table. I had it upholstered in one of my favourite fabrics, Kelly Wearstler’s Flair Noir, and had its frame finished in an antique silver bronze that matches the Louis armchair sitting behind it. I decided to have the chair upholstered in a rich deep blue velvet so that the wild black and white chevron-inspired print of the ottoman stands out even more.”

Being a fairly small ottoman, Ioanna doesn’t have the luxury of having all her go-to interior design books on hand so she tends to rotate them. “For instance, I recently attended Greg Natale’s book launch and of course, had to get the book! So being the newest addition to my design books collection, it’s on the table right now. There’s also an Audrey Hepburn book that both my daughter and I love to look at which tends to reside there all the time.”

ioanna lennox coffee table 3

Flowers are another must-have staple. “The more I decorate with flowers, the more I appreciate the way they define spaces by adding layers of colours, texture and shape –you can really turn up the volume of how loud or soft you want a room to be simply through the flower selection or arrangement you choose. I tend to gravitate towards soft pastel shades of pink or white for the living room and display them in a matt ceramic sculptural vase from BoConcept. The vase goes beautifully with the Jonathan Adler Dora Muse candle, which is a great example of form and function blended into something beautiful and unique. Oh, and its scent is to die for!”

Ioanna loves to arrange everything on a black and gold tray and layer the vase and candle on top: the candle, the vase, some coasters to have on hand and a bronze whale tail that her son likes to wave around pretending it’s an aeroplane! “Good interior design is made up of layers – overt, subtle, visible and invisible. Layers tell stories about the people who live there are and build rooms.”

Display boxes are another favourite. She was recently given the black and white bone zig zag box as a present. “We also use it to dump keys and sunglasses when we come into the house then pop the lid on and it’s all tidy and out of sight! The only problem is when we forget the keys are there and go searching for them for 10 minutes!

“My absolute indulgence in the room is to come downstairs once the kids are finally in bed, glass of wine in hand, soft jazz music humming in the background, light the candles and curl up in the armchair surrounded by my favourite design books or collection of Belle magazines. I flick, I sip, I ponder. It’s in that space that I get inspired, dream and creations come alive. For me, that’s home.”

Covet my coffee table: Adore Home magazine’s Loni Parker

Loni Parker is the founder of Adore Home magazine who recently published her very own coffee table book, Adore. We asked her to share what’s on her coffee table. Turns out Loni has a penchant for coral and anything gold!

coffeetable3DSC_1877

“My coffee table is actually an upholstered ottoman — it’s great because it’s soft enough to put your feet up, but sturdy enough to sit a tray of my favourite decorator items on. On my coffee table you’ll find a black mirrored tray from Freedom, a gold vase from Highgate House (peonies are my favourite flowers, but when they’re not in season I can’t go past roses or snapdragons) and gold urchins from my trip to the US last year (one was purchased in Palm Springs and the other in San Francisco so every time I look at them it takes me back to those places!).

coffeetableDSC_1896

“I also have Kelly Wearstler’s book Modern Glamour on there, and like to rotate it up every now and then including my own book, Adore. Coral is a must for me — it’s one of those things I’m addicted to buying — when I walk into a store that has coral I go weak at the knees and have to have it! I think it must be my kryptonite!”

Loni also loves candles and has a pink Voluspa one sitting on her table. “I’m always buying new candles (another weakness of mine) so this usually gets changed up pretty regularly around here.”

What Belle’s Steve Cordony wants this Christmas

It’s no surprise that Belle’s interior design editor, the hugely talented Sydney stylist and friend of Interiors Addict Steve Cordony, has great taste. Here’s what he’s hoping for from Santa this year, and it’s all a bit monochrome…

I’m loving: Kelly Wearstler’s My Vibe My Life

Interior, and more recently fashion designer Kelly Wearstler is so cool that if I ever met her I think I would be a starstruck mess. She’s also super talented and a great sharer and her blog My Vibe My Life is one of my favourites.

In it you’ll find plenty of photos of her work, her vintage finds, street art and plenty of colour. It’s inspiration central. And there are also plenty of gratuitous photos of Kelly looking fabulous in killer heels and wonderful clothes. So for a serious dose of cool, you know where to go…

I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of her new book Rhapsody either!

Exclusive: Greg Natale meets Kelly Wearstler

What an interior designer dream! One of my favourite Australian designers Greg Natale, has just returned from a trip to LA where he met the legendary Kelly Wearstler, who I just happen to think is the coolest woman EVER.

It was a dream come true for Greg, who is a huge fan. He has been doing business with Kelly’s Melrose store for years and was keen to finally meet her in person. “She is beautiful, tiny and sweet,” he said. “She was exactly how I expected. Casual, cool, approachable and down to earth.”

Interiors porn with Greg Natale

I’m a huge fan of Greg Natale‘s work, you probably all know that by now. And I’ve interviewed Greg and know him well, but I was still keen to attend his session at Coco Republic Design School, especially when I heard he’d be sharing photos of never-before-seen projects. What a treat. And I wasn’t disappointed. Friday morning was, for me, three hours of interiors porn! Loved it! Greg shared photos of some of his most beautiful work, talked about his inspiration, where he sources things, how he runs his business and what’s important in creating interiors that work.

Starting at the very beginning, Greg told he us he was “one of those freaky kids” who knew what they wanted to be from a really early age. Dressing himself and having a very strong sense of personal style from the age of 10, he spent the summer of 1986 ripping down all his parents’ seventies wallpaper. Can you imagine mini Greg doing this? I so can!

Can you give Louise her first foot in the door of the interiors industry?

Last week I met (well, virtually) design graduate and Interiors Addict fan Louise Reeves, who is desperately looking for her first break in the industry. Can you help?

Check out these pictures of a bachelor pad she decorated and styled for her friend. The girl has potential, right?!

The 23 year old, who graduated from the prestigious Design Centre Enmore in November, says: “My dream is to have my own business; a homewares and furniture store in Sydney that I could run my interior design service out of. I would also love to get into product design and design furniture. But right now I am looking for paid or unpaid work, anything to gain experience and get my foot in the door.

“I am more partial to the decoration side of interiors as opposed to construction so to work with likeminded people would be fantastic. I am really willing to do any kind of work in order to gain access to the industry and understand that I will have to work my way up from the bottom.”

Louise describes her style as eclectic, bold and modern. “I love to use a healthy dose of colour and pattern and believe that the best spaces can come about by taking risks and pushing boundaries. I am inspired by the elegance of Hollywood regency and vintage Art Deco decor and, in my travels to Sweden, by the beautiful simplicity of Scandinavian design.

“My favourite designers are Brendan Wong, Kelly Wearstler, Greg Natale, Thomas Hamel, Jonathan Adler, Burley Katon Halliday and Tom Dixon.”

She got off to a great start by winning a ticket to a seminar with Melinda Ashton Turner and Chelsea Hing at decoration + design later this week, in an Interiors Addict giveaway. If you can offer Louise any work experience, an internship, mentoring or assisting work, please email Jen at [email protected]
