Josh and Charlotte’s top renovating tips

Stylist Kylie Tyrrell of Gold Chalk Interiors recently attended Josh and Charlotte from The Block’s guest talk at Coco Republic Design School in Sydney. Here she reports back on their top tips for renovating success:

1. Location is paramount, buy the best you can afford.

2. Try to minimise any structural changes: knocking out walls costs a lot of money.

3. Try to maximise all living spaces and make sure they all connect. If you can and have the space, add stools to the kitchen bench. The kitchen is now another living space!

4. Invest in kitchens and bathrooms.

5. Save money on laundries — especially if, like theirs on The Block, it’s hidden out of the way.

6. Don’t forget the outside! Landscaping is a huge factor — their green wall was a pivotal space, it could be seen from all rooms and connected them together.

7. Use quality furniture, where possible custom build pieces to fit spaces. This then gives the illusion of space and really finishes off a room.

8. Josh was really big on calling in professionals to help with the planning; don’t be scared to enlist a professional for help, they are full of knowledge and will probably save you money in the end.

9. When it comes to following trends, they have a strict rule: trends are used only in easy to change pieces like cushions and linen.

10. Their last bit of advice was to give renovating a go yourself; it’s the only way you learn. Don’t be afraid to try it yourself!

What I loved best about the night was that these two were very down to earth, they mixed with the crowd and let us take lots of photos. They wanted to share all their knowledge with us. I will be keen to see what they work on next. It was easy to see that Charlotte was a big fan of Coco Republic, their style seemed to suit her: classic and timeless. She also mentioned she had just graduated from the design school having done the Decorating Essentials 101 course, all of which she hopes to put to use in Josh’s business, J T Design and Construct.

Timothy Oulton new collection sees a softer side to the brand

Being a Brit myself (yes, Jen employed a fellow Pom!), I’m a bit of a sucker for anything with a Union Jack on it. So, when I got the chance to check out British furniture designer Timothy Oulton’s new collections and meet the man himself at Coco Republic in Sydney recently, I was a little excited.

Timothy Oulton

Inspired by antiques, the Timothy Oulton brand is known for its reinterpretation of classic designs through modern eyes. Made with only the best materials — anything from South American leather to century-old reclaimed wood — quality is always at the forefront of their designs. While their style is quite masculine, Timothy himself blames that on growing up around very few women! Two of the latest collections are showing a very different side though, with Age of Elegance being a little softer and Coastal Drift a little more summery.

Coastal Drift also has one of my all time favourite pieces of theirs (alongside the Union Jack sofa from a previous collection). Entitled the Cloud Sofa (and believe me, it’s aptly named), it’s made from super soft linen and when you sit down it feels as close to floating as is possible!

The other collections all have their own unique story as well. The Age of Elegance collection is reminiscent of old style glamour and the Roaring ‘20s, the Jet collection is strong and audacious in design (it’s inspired by daredevil Sir Donald Campbell) and the Adventurer collection celebrates fearless journeys and exploration with imaginative designs.

Mr Jason Grant on making your home FEEL good

I went to Mr Jason Grant’s design session at Coco Republic Design School last week and it was great. I’m lucky I get to hang out with MJG at industry events all the time but it isn’t really appropriate to pick someone’s brains about their job every time you see them so this way I got to sit back and make notes while everyone else asked the questions. Smart, huh?

For those who don’t know, Jason is a super famous magazine stylist who used to be style director at Real Living. His work can be found in all the major homes magazines, he has his own paint ranges for Murobond and, even more excitingly, he now has a book deal. Can’t wait for that one to come out.

Sunday Snippets: The best of the week in interiors

First, I must apologise for the lack of Sunday Snippets last week. As most of you will have heard by now, I had a crazy weekend: got engaged on Saturday and had my birthday on Sunday! Can’t complain!

Back to this week, here’s what been happening in my world and interiors…

  • I shared a new online find, I Love Linen, where you can pick up everything you need to recreate that hotel bed at home, but at a massive discount.
  • Hot on the heels of Real Living magazine, Country Style launches its own bed linen collection with Domayne this week.
  • The new belle magazine hit the news stands and I was delighted to find two photos of little ole me in there! Did you spot me?
  • I LOVE candles and I told you about a new Melbourne brand called Voyager that have a really clever ‘floating’ design.
  • Bay & Fyfe is one of Sydney’s hottest new lifestyle brands, currently producing some stunning scarves featuring art by Sneaky Sound System’s Daimon Downey. Founder Frith Hucks gave us an exclusive look inside her Sydney home, where many of the scarves decorate her walls as pieces of art.

A pretty big week all round! I hope you all have a fantastic new week ahead! Jen x

BOOK NOW! New Greg Natale sessions announced at Coco Republic Design School

Seriously, don’t hang around. BOOK NOW. These sessions sold out so fast last time around and the poor staff at the Design School were fielding numerous calls from people offering their first born child or right arm for a chance to even stand at the back of one of his sessions! I went to one of them myself so I can vouch for how good a presenter is. Read my write-up here. But before you do that, book now. Did I mention you shouldn’t hang around?! Ok, good.

Interiors porn with Greg Natale

I’m a huge fan of Greg Natale‘s work, you probably all know that by now. And I’ve interviewed Greg and know him well, but I was still keen to attend his session at Coco Republic Design School, especially when I heard he’d be sharing photos of never-before-seen projects. What a treat. And I wasn’t disappointed. Friday morning was, for me, three hours of interiors porn! Loved it! Greg shared photos of some of his most beautiful work, talked about his inspiration, where he sources things, how he runs his business and what’s important in creating interiors that work.

Starting at the very beginning, Greg told he us he was “one of those freaky kids” who knew what they wanted to be from a really early age. Dressing himself and having a very strong sense of personal style from the age of 10, he spent the summer of 1986 ripping down all his parents’ seventies wallpaper. Can you imagine mini Greg doing this? I so can!

Greg Natale to share a decade of work with design enthusiasts

I can’t wait for Greg Natale’s design sessions at Coco Republic Design School next month. Are you going to join me?

In the first half of each three-hour session he’ll share a retrospective of his last ten years in business (running his own practice, Greg Natale Design) with photos of his best residential work. What a treat! The second half of each session will be more workshop style with lots of practical tips to take home. Using case studies, he will guide participants on how to formulate a solid design concept and explain how he creates tailored and dramatic interiors through the use of pattern and colour. Key to Greg’s own personal style is choosing the right furniture and accessories to create a layered look.

Winner of Belle – Coco Republic Interior Designer of the Year, Greg’s unmistakeable design aesthetic has garnered a loyal following. He has been in the industry for 15 years, working across the full spectrum of corporate interiors through to high-end residential projects. In 2001, he started Greg Natale Design with the core purpose of creating cutting edge work through the integration of interior design, architecture and decoration, focusing on residential, retail and commercial design.

The sessions are on Wednesday 16 May from 6-9pm or Friday 18 May from 10am to 1pm and cost $95.

You can read my interview with Greg last year here. For more details or to book a spot on one of the sessions, visit the Design School’s website.

Styling: what’s on YOUR coffee table?

Styling. “It’s the icing on the cake. It’s pointless without the cake but the cake is pretty darn boring without the icing!,” said Darren Palmer at his Coco Republic Design School session on Wednesday.

Everyone can have a go at styling, not everyone gets it right. But it’s fun and non-committal and you can usually use things you already own, just displayed and arranged differently. I personally never get bored of styling up my home.

Darren’s suggested essentials for styling:

  • Tray (wooden/metal/rustic/contemporary)

  • Flowers and greenery

  • Assortment of vases

  • Options for blankets, linens and throws

  • Objets and sculptural items

  • Candles: an assortment of sizes

  • More cushions than you can use (Yes!)

  • Bowls, plates, decorative vases

  • Books! Great to complete the picture.

My own coffee table has a tray (to collect the messy remotes and annoying little things my boyfriend leaves around), a vase of fresh flowers, two piles of design books and a big old candle (Glasshouse) on it. What’s on yours?

Idea-driven design and planning

As promised yesterday, I’m sharing some more of the most useful things I picked up from Darren Palmer’s session at Coco Republic Design School on Wednesday. Today: the idea!

“Like the best advertising, idea-driven design has the most impact,” says Darren. “The idea helps you sort through finishes and schemes to achieve your look and represent your vision.” Your idea might be “fuss-free family home” or “stylish Hamptons”. He advises using interiors magazines, the internet (including blogs like this one, of course!) to search for inspiration and create a scrapbook or an online moodboard with Pinterest (Are you pinning yet? I knew it!).

Now an idea and a theme are two very different things. The way he explained it, a kids’ birthday party might have a theme, while a wedding, something altogether more classy, should be about an idea instead. And we all know people who make the mistake of going with a theme (in weddings and in homes) and taking it so far it becomes ridiculous. I’ll risk upsetting a lot of people here but French country? What’s that all about?! (I flirted with shabby chic myself a few years ago. Patchwork and roses EVERYWHERE. In hindsight? Terrible! But I loved it at the time).

Another boring but absolute necessity that Darren talked a lot about was planning, highlighting the importance of function and flow in a home. A scale floor plan enables you to see the space configuration and hopefully any major issues will jump out at you and you can look at solutions. He advises allocating some of your budget to fixing planning and layout issues (badly located doors, restriction of light etc). Pay attention to proportions, which can really have an impact on flow and liveability. Darren says priority number one (assuming you’re revamping your entire home) should be to improve the layout of poorly positioned rooms, particularly kitchens and bathrooms (“They sell houses!”). An accurate floor plan will also help you discover the best place for pieces of furniture.

“Don’t be afraid to block out a window or change a doorway here or there. These small, yet dirty changes, can yield transforming results,” he says.

Come back tomorrow to learn about styling. Everyone loves that bit, don’t they?
