The new Ginger & Smart flagship boutique is a stunner!

Housed inside the Pacific Fair shopping centre on the Gold Coast, the new Ginger & Smart flagship boutique is one of the more striking retail interiors we’ve seen in some time. It also happens to pair soft pink (one of our favourite hues) with petrol blue – a bold match made in interiors heaven!

“We’ve created a space that engages with the Ginger & Smart resort lifestyle and plays with contrasts by mixing traditional elements of masculinity and femininity to find an intersection of magic. It’s a space that is neutral and warm, yet bold and confident, with a generous gesture of deep petrol green to the rear of the space,” says Mark Robinson of Melbourne’s Flack Studio, the interior architecture firm responsible for the fit-out.

Given the Australian designer fashion brand is known for its vibrant use of colour, it’s fitting that the store reflects this. “The best part of the project was working with Alexandra and Genevieve from Ginger & Smart – because they really embraced the design process it was fun for all. I particularly loved their braveness in colour selection – sometimes retail can try and play is safe – but not Ginger & Smart!” says Mark.

With a ‘fresh and contemporary, polished and yet playful’ directive from the fashion design duo, Flack Studio combined a mix of luxurious colours and materials for a super-stylish, high-end result befitting of the brand. “I love the use of colour and the material mix-up – plush carpet, luxe curtains, leathered finished black granite and deep chunky marble that counteracts the softness of the coral terrazzo and black caviar American oak joinery,” says Mark.

The Fibonacci Stone coral terrazzo on the floor is a particular highlight – inspired by the colours of an ocean reef, the terrazzo features a mix of orange and pink pigments with accents of white, grey and shell.

“There is focus on our styling suites – a luxurious private space where customers and stylists engage. We also wanted the Ginger & Smart boutique to be one clients could navigate through with a sense of discovery – a series of high and low elements that takes the customer on a journey,” says Mark.

Online shopping fix: TRADE the MARK

A maker of one-of-a-kind homewares, Christina McLean’s new online boutique TRADE the MARK, combines her great love of hand-made techniques with textiles, ceramics and paper.

Her bespoke works encompass rich indigos, beautiful burnt oranges and imaginative details, inspired by organic textures and hand-sourced treasures from Christina’s global travels. Using the natural materials of clay, linen and rag paper, her patterns are hand dyed and painted, and her ceramics hand thrown.

Eschewing the modern trend of mass-production, Christina is committed to the slow, ancient tradition of hand craftsmanship, which inspires a love in the beauty of individual objects.

Being one of Australia’s leading textile designers — consulting with top fashion designers such as Sass & Bide and Ginger & Smart — as well as being the creative director of Chowk ceramics for 10 years; Christina has now returned to her roots, combining her great love of hand-made ceramics with her textile design skills and experience.

Stunning home styled by Dulux and Ginger & Smart

How absolutely stunning is this Melbourne home?! Styled by Dulux in partnership with fashion designers Alexandra and Genevieve Smart (of Ginger & Smart), the house was brought to life through the colours, textures and mood evoked by their Autumn Winter 2015 collection, Arcadia.

The living room features simple and soft-shaped furniture and accessories that juxtapose with the hard lines of built-in shelves painted in a commanding blue-black shade. The entry walls to the living room echos the Afterglow print in the Arcadia collection through a speckled paint pattern applied to the walls.

The styling of the home’s light-filled kitchen draws on a softer colour palette showcased in the Eclipse print from the collection. Accents of copper reference Ginger & Smart’s signature Rose Gold hardware and contribute to a feeling of luxury that is core to the brand’s nature and design aesthetic. An abstract interpretation of the palm frond found in the Eclipse print cuts through the walls of the kitchen at unexpected angles to accentuate the architectural design of the space as well as demonstrate a creative and easy method to create feature points using paint.

In the bedroom a deep and moody paint colour has been applied to the walls and ceiling, inspired by the collection’s namesake print; Arcadia. Large florals painted in luminous colours fall organically from ceiling to floor to lift the dark mood of the space and complement textural linens and furniture.

The styling project marks the first time Dulux and Ginger & Smart have collaborated. With their recently announced creative partnership set to see them join forces for further projects that blur the line between fashion and interior design.
