Parisian grit meets glamour in new Sydney hotel with rooftop bar

Bursting with character, Darlinghurst’s The Strand Hotel has completed the final phase of its multi-level restoration. The 99-year-old pub with the new rooftop bar and 17-bedroom hotel is now open. Creating a boutique refuge in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, The Strand offers sophistication with a mix of well curated French style.

The project was overseen by George Gorrow, co-founder of cult denim brand Ksubi, with principal architect Tom de Plater of Public Hospitality and Public Design Studio as creative director.

A contemporary blend of Parisian elegance and bohemian spirit, The Strand Rooftop is an idyllic open escape for both hotel guests and locals alike to soak up the afternoon sun underneath the kaleidoscope awning or watch the city at dusk, lit up with the glow of festoon lights. The rooftop offers a playful and vibrant mix of colourful textures, warm timber and lush verdant landscaping that encloses the intimate space.

“We’ve designed the rooftop to provide an unexpected and charming escape amongst the anonymity of William Street, with a deliberate strong contrast to the aesthetic experienced through the brooding texture and materials of the hotel rooms and bistro below” says Tom.

The bar serves its signature drinks, the French Ginger Mule and Thyme & Basil Daiquiri, alongside a menu of light dishes such as tuna tartare and fried shallot with sesame crackers, corn and gruyere croquettes, fried chicken with pickles and hot sauce and the Rooftop toastie with leg ham, mustard and pickles.

The rooftop will also host a series of live entertainment and weekly DJs each Friday and Saturday from 6pm to midnight and 4pm to 10pm on Sundays.

Describing The Strand Hotel as a drink, George wants the hotel to feel like a dirty martini; classic, with a twist. “The Strand has been designed with the intimacy and personal service of a boutique hotel, creating a community hub of likeminded people, that makes you want to return again and again. My purpose is for the character of the hotel to grow and continue to build over time, just as if you were building your own home.”

The Strand’s 17 boutique hotel rooms with refined, contemporary interiors feature crisp white linens, rattan bedheads, deep green finishings and contrasting dark floorboards. With five different guest rooms to choose from, starting at $199 a night for a king single through to $359 for a deluxe queen, each calm oasis is filled with considered essentials that will keep guests both pampered and plugged-in.

As guests enter from the bustling William Street, they will be welcomed through to a charismatic hotel house of Parisan sensibility where grit meets glamour and dark black surfaces paint a masculine edge to contrast the refined furnishings and warm cream textures of the walls, showcasing the history and character of the building.

The bistro

The architectural design has been born off the history of the site with a winding staircase taking guests up to a two-story labyrinth of winding halls, where George has hand selected Australian photographers such as Simon Lekius, Denniela Rache, Chris Searl and Domonic Rawl to adorn the walls.

Meanwhile on the ground floor, The Strand Bistro is bolstered by a playful sense of mischief, drawing cues from turn-of-the-century Paris, with a modern laidback interpretation of French cuisine. Spoons of beluga caviar sit proudly alongside humble steak frites and duck leg pie served with grilled broccolini, mash and gravy and baguettes with cultured butter. Culinary director Nick Mahlook has designed the Bistro menu to hero seasonal Australian produce while the extensive drinks list boasts an impressive line-up of French and Australian wines, aperitifs, cocktails and beers and a 49 strong whisky list.

The Strand Bistro, Hotel and Rooftop are now all open for bookings.

Sydney’s newest 5-star boutique hotel

Visiting 100 of the world’s most luxurious boutique hotels in 20 countries, it’s safe to say Lancemore Group CEO Julian Clark had a lot of inspiration. Taking the best bits from each, he has today opened Larmont Sydney, a 5-star boutique hotel in Potts Point.

The first CBD property for the family-owned company, the hotel seamlessly brings together European luxury with Scandinavian simplicity. Fancy a mini-bar stocked with Dom Perignon? What about a choice of luxe spa products to pamper yourself in-room? Or even a private balcony for your fur baby to sunbathe in solitude? Larmont Sydney has it all. “We wanted to create a hotel that draws on the best features of hotels around the world to bring together foodies, wellness enthusiasts and design conscious guests alike,” explains Julian. “Our ethos of true generosity is evidenced by integrated luxury, technology and genuine hospitality.”

Designed by global architecture firm HASSEL, the boutique hotel features 103 rooms and suites across seven floors, with harbour and city views. “Our guests have pretty great homes to live in when they’re not travelling,” says Julian. “So with every choice we asked ourselves ‘is this better than what I can get at home?’”

Luxury finishes include marble benchtops, leather bedheads, freestanding baths and separate rain showers; combined with must-have technology like Apple TV and Bose Sound Touch. When it comes to food, guests can order from local restaurants via Deliveroo and UberEats or dine in the adjoining restaurant, The Hyde. Best yet, they can enjoy happy hour with a complimentary first drink and canapés.

My stay at the Karl Lagerfeld designed Sofitel So Singapore

Right at the very end of our recent six-month trip, we were lucky enough to stay at the new Sofitel So Singapore to break our journey from London for a few nights. It is most famous for being designed, in part, by fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld.

Sofitel So Singapore - Standard room

Not only are the interiors very cool (despite the rather small size of the rooms) –a nice mix of classic and modern– there are all manner of great free inclusions like wi-fi, mini bar snacks and soft drinks and a golden (yes, you read right) rooftop pool! It’s very high-tech too with pretty much everything in the room controlled via Apple technology. I never got tired of opening the blinds from my bedside iPad!

Here’s the lobby bar, which was often full of cool young things! I loved the design.

Addict Abroad: it’s all white at the Boscolo Exedra, Nice

It’s been three weeks since we returned from our six-month trip and while I’m surrounded by boxes having moved house last week, and the reality of home and routine is kicking in (mostly in a good way!), it’s nice to reflect on some of our adventures from back in Australia. One of the most ‘designy’ hotels we stayed at in Europe was the five-star Boscolo Exedra in Nice, France. Have you been to Nice? Gosh, the water is so beautiful and blue. You see why they call it the Cote d’Azur because azure is the word for it!

6479_107_HT_960x960

The Boscolo was definitely a memorable hotel. You walk in and the first impression is pretty wow. It’s white, white and more white, with striking huge horse sculptures and more fresh flowers than you could shake a stick at. Oh, and an amazing cloud-like pendant light.

The white theme continued upstairs in our very nice room. It’s not for those who prefer a cosy vibe but on a summer’s day, it’s light, bright and breezy, and refreshingly different from other, more traditional European hotels.

Here are a few holiday snaps from our time in Nice and nearby Monaco…

Addict Abroad: The Thompson, Chicago

We’ve been back from our trip for two weeks now and it’s good to be home, and to have moved into our own place at the weekend. But I’m still dreaming about some of the amazing hotels we were lucky enough to stay in while we were away. One of my favourites was The Thompson in Chicago. This hotel’s comfortable, luxurious, stylish decor made us not want to leave!

CHI_Lobby_Overview_01

It’s gorgeous, don’t you agree?

CHI_Lobby_04

Nothing about it felt like that cookie cutter kind of hotel decor. While the lobby was amazing, our room didn’t disappoint at all, showing that the same care  had been taken with the guest rooms as the communal areas.

Addict Abroad: The College Hotel, Amsterdam

On our trip to Amsterdam last month, we stayed in a really cool coverted school called, not surpisingly, The College Hotel! But it was much more stylish and comfortable than the name might suggest!

college hotel amsterdam

I love a bit of hotel luxury but I’m more interested in boutique accommodation than the predictability of international hotel chains. The College ticked all my important boxes: interesting interiors, a very large and comfortable bed, friendly and attentive (but not over the top) staff, coffee-making facilities (don’t roll your eyes, caffeine is important!), free wifi and a full size tub!

Sadly, there was no snow on our visit but the sunshine was very welcome!

With just 40 rooms, the four-star hotel feels intimate and cosy. I can’t fault the location, 15 minutes door to door by tram from Centraal Station in the leafy, quiet and fashionable Zuid (south) area, and even closer to the museums.

Adelaide’s hotel and art gallery in one

If there’s a project that brings art and interiors together perfectly, the Minima Art Rooms is it. In the Hotel Minima, North Adelaide, large-scale murals and installations cover the walls of all 46 rooms.

KateGagliardi01

Curated by Matthew Stuckey of Be Friendly, the work of 43 emerging artists from across Adelaide and Australia really is a “moment-in-time snapshot of South Australia’s emerging artist scene.” One of Matt’s biggest projects so far and as far as he knows the biggest of its kind in Australia, the project is unique; it has literally turned a hotel into one huge work of art.

VansTheOmega01

It’s not your standard hotel interior by any means, and far from the minimal look the hotel had previously, so how did the project come about?

A sense of nostalgia at boutique Melbourne hotel The Hatton

Although I love a fancy pants 5-star chain hotel as much as the next person, I’m also a sucker for good quality, unique, boutique accommodation, and The Hatton, in Melbourne’s South Yarra, is just that. I had the pleasure of staying in this historic Italianate mansion when I visited for Life Instyle last week.

exterior the hatton

First impressions were fantastic with this grand exterior, tucked away in a quiet residential street full of beautiful old houses. There’s a cosy welcome at the front desk/breakfast/lounge room, where coffee and continental breakfast is served each morning and included in the room price. It doesn’t feel like a hotel, more a grand, but not intimidating, and very charming, old home.
