The country’s 50 most jaw-dropping rooms

I have a confession: I am addicted to house porn… and don’t worry it’s not as X-rated as it sounds. Rather, it’s the act of checking out the most lust-worthy, jaw-dropping residences and dreaming of winning the lottery so you can call them home!

Designed by Adelaide Bragg

The 2017 House & Garden Top 50 Rooms is perfect for fellow addicts. Now in its 19th year, the competition celebrates the crème de la crème of Australian residential design. Whittled down from hundreds of entries, the rooms are as diverse as they are stunning with beautifully functional kitchens to ingenious living spaces and dreamy bedrooms.

Designed by Lisa Burdus

This year’s overall winner is a luxurious sunken living room, designed by Melbourne architect, Dina Malathounis of Junctions90. Blending a neutral palette with a spectacular open fire, it has oversized glass windows that lead to the backyard.

With an esteemed judging panel including Australian House & Garden‘s editor in chief Lisa Green, interior designer Dana Tomic-Hughes of Yellowtrace and colour expert Lucy Sutherland; the categories range from Best Kitchen to Best Use of Colour and Best Use of Materials.

Six states are represented in the Top 50, with a blind judging process guaranteeing an unbiased result. As Room of the Year designer, Dina receives a trip for two to Paris for the Maison & Objet fair in January 2018. We are jealous!

From interiors to fiction, Georgia Madden’s debut novel

Writing about interiors for the last 18 years, it had always been Georgia Madden’s dream to try her hand at fiction. So, a couple of years ago with her 40th birthday approaching, it felt like a now or never moment, and with a wine glass in hand(!) she started writing.

“I write decorating features everyday so I thought writing fiction would be a doddle,” explains Georgia. “It wasn’t! But it was certainly a lot of fun. I was shocked and delighted when Nero picked the book up.”

Seeing it as a chance to make peace with some of the more difficult times she went through as a new mother, Georgia’s debut novel, Confessions of A Once Fashionable Mum, is a tongue-in-cheek look at the joys and horrors of the first year of motherhood. With so many books out there about how wonderful and fulfilling motherhood can be – instant bonding, overwhelming love and the perfect family — Georgia wanted to write about the flip side — the mess, the exhaustion and the whole not remembering your own name thing! “While motherhood is certainly an amazing time I’ve never been great with change and adapting to life at home with a baby took me a while,” says Georgia. “It’s a crazy, heartbreaking, heartwarming time, but a lot of it is also pretty funny. That’s really what I was hoping to capture in Confessions.”

Confessions-COVER SHOT-1

Still reporting on interiors by day — Georgia writes for the likes of House & Garden, Inside Out and Home Beautiful — she found her knowledge of interiors to be imperative when writing her novel. “One of the best parts of my job is writing about people’s homes and I’ve been lucky enough to meet some fascinating people and seen some gorgeous homes along the way. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that at least a couple of the scenarios I encountered have found their way into Confessions.”

Now working on her next novel, which is again focused on women, friendship and family, Georgia is currently trying to find that sweet spot between balancing feature writing and fiction… oh, and looking after the kids, of course!

Confessions of a Once Fashionable Mum (Nero Books) is out now. Buy it online.

Home Beautiful, March 2013

In a new regular feature, Jacqui Greig reviews the latest interiors magazines.

I know this is terrible, but with the sheer volume of magazines I purchase each month, I sometimes struggle to remember if I’ve bought Home Beautiful already – their covers tend to get a bit ‘same same’. Don’t get me wrong, obviously they’ve hit the nail on the head when it comes to branding… maybe it’s their use of colour? This month they’ve gone with a gorgeous blue teal on their masthead, and a charming rustic country outdoor setting.

Highlights

1. The quirky cool home of Charlotte and Philippe in Odense, Denmark (story by Eckmann Studio and photography by Bjarni B Jacobsen). The bright pops of colour have me itching to pick up a paintbrush (the purple velour furniture is insanely fabulous), and the bathroom is brimming with character thanks to panels of ‘Paperback Stacks’ wallpaper by Tracy Kendall (available from The Collection). The house is actually a villa, called ‘the church house’ because of its distinctive architecture.

Meet stylist’s assistant Ashley!

Ashley Pratt is a super keen wannabe stylist with plenty of work experience under her belt, ready to get stuck into full-time work. But we all know getting a stylist’s assistant gig isn’t easy, so I thought I’d give her a helping hand.

She has a degree in media and law (but you probably don’t care about that) and (more importantly) she’s worked for House & Garden mag and POCO Designs, as well as in event styling for Marilyn Grace and Pret-a-Party. The 24 year old, who is looking for paid full-time work, loves everything interior design related and her own personal style is contemporary with bold colours and interesting patterns.

“I’m an extremely organised perfectionist which can be both a blessing and a curse,” she says. “I’m a big believer in small finishing touches and tiny details that make all the difference.”

As well as assisting with styling, Ashley is happy to carry out PA duties. If you can offer Ashley work, please contact Jen for more details.
