Win a $1000 makeover with Home Beautiful’s new homewares

Sponsored by MyHouse and HOUSE – Bed & Bath

Home Beautiful magazine has launched a beautiful range of homewares available exclusively at MyHouse and HOUSE – Bed & Bath. It follows their recent gorgeous collaboration with design expert Neale Whitaker and we love it!

Now you can bring a touch of Home Beautiful’s design and décor know-how to your home with a selection of sumptuously soft bedding, luxurious bath towels and stylish decor pieces, all at an affordable introductory price. And one lucky Interiors Addict reader can even win $1,000 worth of the Home Beautiful goodies to make over their bedroom and bathroom. There’ll probably be enough left over for some sofa cushions and a candle too!

“At Home Beautiful we’ve been celebrating and sharing inspiring interiors for many years. So it was a natural next step to launch our own homewares range,” says editor in chief Elle Lovelock. “The range is everything we love about homewares. It’s simplicity at its finest with designs that are elegantly understated and easy to style to create a beautiful sanctuary at home.”

We agree that the range will be so easy to incorporate into many different homes, lending itself to layering with existing pieces or others from within the range. Struggling to choose the perfect cushion combo for your bed (we know it’s really tricky!)? Why not replicate one of the above images?! It’s not cheating, it’s being stylist-inspired!

The range has pure cotton quilt cover sets in in so many different (but all beautifully subtle and easy to work with) designs, European pillowcases, coverlets (we love swapping our quilt for one of these in the warmer months), sheeting, cushions, throws, towels, candles and more.

Colours include calming hues of mist and petal, soft greys, crisp whites and uplifting blues, complemented by simple and elegant patterns and textures.

What’s more, everything’s at a serious discount of up to 50% off for a limited time so don’t wait too long to grab your favourites!

We’ll take one of everything!

Quilt cover sets & coordinating European pillowcases

These all start at $129.99 for a Queen quilt cover set and coordinating European pillowcases are $34.99 each, while introductory prices apply.

Yumi is my personal favourite of all the quilt covers

From interiors to fiction, Georgia Madden’s debut novel

Writing about interiors for the last 18 years, it had always been Georgia Madden’s dream to try her hand at fiction. So, a couple of years ago with her 40th birthday approaching, it felt like a now or never moment, and with a wine glass in hand(!) she started writing.

Georgie-Madden
Georgia

“I write decorating features everyday so I thought writing fiction would be a doddle,” explains Georgia. “It wasn’t! But it was certainly a lot of fun. I was shocked and delighted when Nero picked the book up.”

Seeing it as a chance to make peace with some of the more difficult times she went through as a new mother, Georgia’s debut novel, Confessions of A Once Fashionable Mum, is a tongue-in-cheek look at the joys and horrors of the first year of motherhood. With so many books out there about how wonderful and fulfilling motherhood can be – instant bonding, overwhelming love and the perfect family — Georgia wanted to write about the flip side — the mess, the exhaustion and the whole not remembering your own name thing! “While motherhood is certainly an amazing time I’ve never been great with change and adapting to life at home with a baby took me a while,” says Georgia. “It’s a crazy, heartbreaking, heartwarming time, but a lot of it is also pretty funny. That’s really what I was hoping to capture in Confessions.”

Confessions-COVER SHOT-1

Still reporting on interiors by day — Georgia writes for the likes of House & Garden, Inside Out and Home Beautiful — she found her knowledge of interiors to be imperative when writing her novel. “One of the best parts of my job is writing about people’s homes and I’ve been lucky enough to meet some fascinating people and seen some gorgeous homes along the way. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that at least a couple of the scenarios I encountered have found their way into Confessions.”

Now working on her next novel, which is again focused on women, friendship and family, Georgia is currently trying to find that sweet spot between balancing feature writing and fiction… oh, and looking after the kids, of course!

Confessions of a Once Fashionable Mum (Nero Books) is out now. Buy it online.

Stylist Juliet Love on the 7 ways to get the designer look for less

With a very impressive resume, stylist Juliet Love has worked for the likes of Christian Dior and Mirvac, written for Home Beautiful and News Limited, co-hosted and presented on The Morning Show and The Lifestyle Channel and is the wife of landscape designer Charlie Albone (one of our Reno Addict resident experts) and the mother of two beautiful little boys. My, I feel tired just listing it all! And now, Juliet has added another profession to her growing list of achievements: author.

TMXfePfAAdjp2FWuxEvgFUmlNgE9jKDvuAJAGt9mOTg

Her first book, Love Style, is all about showing readers how they can create a beautiful home without having to employ a professional designer. Featuring simple tips, readers will learn how to: find their own style and inspiration, create mood boards, stick to a budget, use the rules of balance, harmony and proportion, mix patterns and colours and more!

Believing if a home’s decor is executed in the right way it can “literally take your breath away,” Juliet’s aim is to help readers create a home that is striking, expresses their personality, and most of all makes them feel happy and inspired. One of the biggest tricks of the trade she shares is how to get the designer look for less, and I couldn’t resist asking her for one little teaser. Juliet, kindly shared seven!

1. Not everything has to match

8jOq5H2IhPCdU2gh9CE47u6icHRjDnkvmH9prPeXyRg

Some of the most stylish rooms in the world aren’t perfectly coordinated. In
fact, often it’s the opposite. An eclectic mix is much more exciting visually so be adventurous and try a few items that you wouldn’t naturally assume go together. Create a ‘story’ by placing items together that might be different styles, but have something about them that is similar – a touch of gold paint, or an interesting shade of fuchsia in the detail of separate items is enough to tie pieces together.

2. Think big

When you’re talking decor and accessories, big is generally better. It just says luxury. A few carefully selected large-scale items make a room seem more substantial. Lots of little items tend to look cluttered and get lost amongst the mess.

3. Wallpaper in unexpected places

Wallpaper looks brilliant in small spaces – in an entry foyer, hallway, at the back of open bookshelves or cupboards, and even on the ceiling. Don’t just stick to traditional patterned wallpaper either; modern textured wallpaper can look fabulous too.

If you can’t afford to wallpaper an entire room, use wallpaper on a panel of the wall, or use a covered canvas as an artwork. Lining the back of open shelving with wallpaper and even the exterior of closet doors, will inject some unexpected visual excitement into a room.

4. Have one or two showstoppers

O_osULuHfGTxySO2H6H0I47uQX-oeXQyfC-jgDuP9go

It’s true you don’t have to spend a lot of money on every piece in the room, but you should consider investing in one or two items. If everything is cheap, then quite frankly everything is going to look cheap. The showstopper doesn’t have to be a piece of furniture – it would be equally effective to have an upscale Italian light fitting in the middle of your room as a dramatic piece.

5. Decorative moldings and architectural hardware

Adding paneling to sections of a wall — usually the lower area — or adding crown moldings to ceilings or walls, will give your space a designer look. Paint them a contrasting colour for the most striking effect. You can get easy-to-apply moldings for mass-produced furniture from inexpensive chain stores. When painted they can be transformed into an unrecognisable design piece.

New knobs and handles on cupboards and drawers in kitchens, bathrooms and even on bedroom furniture can be just the update your existing items need. Go for glass or coloured knobs, or contemporary silver for a more modern look.

6. The detail – accessories and embellishments

One thing that most professionally designed homes will have is an attention to detail through embellishments such as piping, fringes, edging on upholstery and decorative accents thoughtfully placed around the room to tell a story and bring the room to life. Think about adding a contrasting edge to your lampshades or curtains, or a distinctive piped border to your sofa to get a stylish look.

7. Hang art

U4vmyb3kJF9fyINmODo69pc_0UaNDtf5M6JXiQJt9d0

A common feature of expensive homes is the art that decorates the walls. The art itself doesn’t have to be extravagant, the trick is to hang it like you would see in a gallery – in multiple matching frames, or have one oversized artwork on a main wall.

Post House Rules reveal chat with winners Candy and Ryan

With the first House Rules elimination occurring earlier this week, the pressure was well and truly on! In just four days, the five remaining teams were tasked with what seemed like an impossible challenge: transforming an entire Sydney unit each, in just four days.

NSW
Candy and Ryan

Last night’s episode saw the conclusion of the challenge, with NSW team Candy and Ryan taking home the win. They managed to score their first elusive 10 from judge and Home Beautiful editor Wendy Moore and a nine from fellow judge and architect, Joe Snell.

“I can’t even put into words how it felt to get that 10,” says Ryan. “Candy and I tried for so long, one thing we really wanted to achieve in the competition was a perfect 10 and to be the second team to do it was awesome. We pushed so hard and it felt like for so long as well and to get it for Monica’s apartment… we’re rapt.”

Assigned with the job of making over the home of single, insect-loving Monica, most of the house rules were easy to follow – bar the fact that she wanted an insect theme! “Candy and I got really lucky this week, the house rules Monica wanted were edgy and eclectic and that’s really similar to the style we like ourselves,” explains Ryan. “However, the insect component was the total opposite! We had no idea what direction we were going to go with that. We knew we had to get insects in somewhere and we thought the best way to introduce them was with some creative wallpaper which we think really looked good in the end.”

Used to spending a week on a renovation and just working on one zone, the change-up in the format was a lot of pressure. “It was crazy. We thought seven days was tough but then to do a whole apartment in four, we were just so under pressure,” says Candy. “I think you could really see how hard it was and how stressful it was, especially for me. When we finished I just broke down, I was so relived it was over. I was exhausted.”

However, because of both the time limit and the budget, the challenge was presented as a makeover challenge rather than a full-scale renovation. “Our budgets were so tight we couldn’t go crazy replacing everything,” explains Candy. “We spent most of our money on the bathroom and completely re-did that. Then the rest was more cosmetic, painting things, adding extra furniture, that type of thing.”

While the makeover was no doubt one of their toughest experiences thus far, Ryan believes it was all worth it for the chance to give back: “It definitely felt great to give something back, but then it was really challenging cause the last thing we wanted to do was to give Monica an apartment she wasn’t in love with. So we really threw ourselves into this week and I think you could tell.”

The unit makeover challenge saw Candy and Ryan come in first with a total score of 19; followed by Adam and Lisa with a score of 15; Carole and Russell with 14; Maddi and Lloyd with 12; and Bomber and Mel with eight. Luckily for Bomber and Mel, they were saved from the expected elimination and instead they, and all the other contestants scores, will be carried over into the next phase of the competition: the 24-hour fix-up challenge.

House Rules continues Sunday at 6.30pm with the 24-hour fix-up challenge, where the remaining teams must return to their renovated homes and choose one zone to change. The reveals will be on Monday at 7.30pm when another team will be eliminated.

Home Beautiful, March 2013

In a new regular feature, Jacqui Greig reviews the latest interiors magazines.

I know this is terrible, but with the sheer volume of magazines I purchase each month, I sometimes struggle to remember if I’ve bought Home Beautiful already – their covers tend to get a bit ‘same same’. Don’t get me wrong, obviously they’ve hit the nail on the head when it comes to branding… maybe it’s their use of colour? This month they’ve gone with a gorgeous blue teal on their masthead, and a charming rustic country outdoor setting.

Home Beautiful March 2013 cover

Highlights

1. The quirky cool home of Charlotte and Philippe in Odense, Denmark (story by Eckmann Studio and photography by Bjarni B Jacobsen). The bright pops of colour have me itching to pick up a paintbrush (the purple velour furniture is insanely fabulous), and the bathroom is brimming with character thanks to panels of ‘Paperback Stacks’ wallpaper by Tracy Kendall (available from The Collection). The house is actually a villa, called ‘the church house’ because of its distinctive architecture.
