Running from 3-5 June in Sydney’s Waterloo, Factory Design District is a three-day celebration of Australian designed and manufactured furniture, homewares and food and it’s a great chance to meet the makers too. From furniture to textiles, jewellery, food, wine and beer, the new event focusses on authentic, original, locally made, environmentally sustainable design and will feature exclusive talks, events, demos and dining from a broad range of exhibitors including Dinosaur Designs, Mud Australia, Bloodwood and ILANEL.

Dinosaur Designs

One of Australia’s biggest design success stories, Dinosaur Designs truly exemplifies this event. With every one of their pieces made by hand, and passing through many pairs in the process, each creation is slightly different and it’s just what makes their work so beautiful. This event is a great chance to get inside the designers’ heads and find out what is next for the brand.

ILANEL

ILANEL

ILANEL are a fabulous creator of bespoke lighting – come along to learn about their distinctive designs that furnish hotels, homes, offices, restaurants and clubs around the country. Another lighting design company, ISM Objects, will be exhibiting as part of the event too and with 75 per cent of its lighting manufactured in-house, it’s well worthy of a position on the bill.

Mud Australia

Renowned for their gorgeous porcelain creations that are made by hand in their Sydney factory, Mud Australia will be part of the event too. Visitors will learn about the handmade processes that result in their beautiful, minimalist-meets-artisan aesthetic.

Bloodwood

Bloodwood

With its industrial-themed interior, Newtown’s Bloodwood restaurant is a perfect pairing for the expo, and it’s one that will leave you feeling rather sated too. The restaurant will be showcasing its food and wine alongside Mecca Coffee, Continental Deli and many others. Continental Deli is a purveyor of delicious local goods –  their offering includes rare and delicious cheese and charcuterie but their great-looking tinned local produce is where they really shine. Yum!

Melbourne lighting designers illuminate the scene

As design scenes go, Melbourne is a rich and varied one and this certainly holds true for the latest crop of lighting designers to emerge from the city. From the minimal yet luxe creations of Ben-Tovim Design to Volker Haug’s colourful/industrial aesthetic and Studio Ilanel’s large scale commercial commissions, it seems Melbourne is the place to be if you’re into illumination.

Jonathan Ben-Tovim’s Rough Diamond range

Zimbabwean born, Adelaide raised, Jonathan Ben-Tovim combines minimal design principles with luxe finishes to great effect. We love both his ‘Rough Diamond’ range, which is made using 3D printing technology, and his new ‘Perf Pendant’ range for its perforated metal detailing.

After obtaining a master’s degree in design at the highly regarded Design Academy in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, Jonathan completed a stint working at a London industrial design studio which paved the way for setting up his own company.

Studio Ilanel’s Ripple pendants

Architect Ilan El graduated from RMIT’s Industrial Design Masters program in 2008, after which he became interested in lighting design. Whimsical and engaging, his work uses a large variety of materials and he creates bespoke lighting for high-end residential projects and large scale commercial installations too. We love his use of neon.

ilanel and Arthur G team up with bespoke lights for Saturday in Design

ilanel is putting the finishing touches to a bespoke series of its kahdu pendant lights, to be hung exclusively in the Arthur G showroom as part of Saturday in Design Melbourne this weekend.

“We’re so excited to be working with Arthur G, who really understand the importance of original design and support local designers,” said ilanel designer Ilan El. The kahdu pendants, hand made in Melbourne, add a bold sculptural statement to any modern space.

Hand woven from French ribbon and available in 20 colours, the collection is inspired by the 60s op art movement. The precise, mathematically based composition gives the viewer the illusion that the light is breathing or moving.

See the kahdu collection at the Arthur G showroom, 618 Church Street, Richmond, this coming Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 August.
